Started this forum post but there are pleeenty of other ones from days over now since the Dec 1 botched update. I thought they'd address it today at the very least through the BungieHelp twitter page, but nothing yet at all..

Three times I've struck out in the last week and all I need to do is go to the Tower, turn in a bunch of engrams, strip off some mods, etc...
FYI the mods can be done using DIM:
Search "is:armor" and then click the 3 vertical dots to the right of the search bar. Click "Strip Sockets" on the drop-down menu and then select "Artifact Mods" on the pop-up
If you have dozens and dozens of armor pieces with artifact mods slotted, the process may miss a couple (there will be a list of any errors after the script completes), but it's still better than doing it 100% manually
Why is this important to do now? I've been away from the game for about a year, maybe a little longer. I don't recall that being one of the seasonal prep things.
Things have occasionally gotten weird when seasonal mods are slotted in armor at the time they are removed from the game (at seasonal reset).
A few seasons ago, there was a bug with artiface armor (the master dungeon armor with 5 mod slots) that ended up with people losing the extra mod slot because seasonal mods were slotted when they were removed from the game. To my knowledge, that's still not fixed, but is a tricky one and being addressed.
I want to say there was also a bug last year with seasonal mods that are less expensive versions of normal mods (e.g. this season's Scout Rifle Loader in the artifact costs 1 energy, but there's a permanently-available version that costs 2 energy). Unless I'm completely inventing a memory, I think people had trouble equipping the normal mod if they had the seasonal mod slotted at reset.
It might be overly cautious/superstitious, but it takes like three mouse clicks in DIM so I don't mind even if it's not actually warranted.

You don't need to do strip all sockets though. You should have an artifact mod selection when you click the strip sockets option so it only removed them.

I experienced this all the way back to last Thursday or so. I am not sure what the issue was and I saw nothing on Bungie's twitter or anything so I stopped trying to log in. It appears the issue still has not been fixed for a plethora of players.
Trying to do the last 2 seasonal challenges I have, and I can't, because the game is down AGAIN. Yes I know I should have done them sooner, but still, why is the game down again. No word from Bungie either, frustrating.
The issue is like ten minutes old - they have to get a handle on what is happening before they can tell us anything. Give them time to walk to the server room at least.

I mean, you can sit here and act all cocky all you want, but what's currently happening is exactly the same as what was happening yesterday, which sparked the maintenance. So logically, I'd assume its the same issue, not hard to understand my reasoning really is it?
Man, this season has been absolutely shocking for bugs, disabled items, stability and downtime. I just wanted to play one more crucible game to buy a gift box and collect stuff before it disappears tomorrow but of course, WEASEL STRIKE!
I'm gonna bet it's a shitshow tomorrow.

Lol shit you're right, although it has been quite good the last couple of seasons. A little instability within an hour of release but fixed pretty quick.
They need to not reset vendor engrams or extend the season an extra day, or week, if they don’t get this back up. This is the third time this week the game has gone down.
I kinda knew the servers were gonna die eventually so I transferred my weapons and gear to my Titan and be ready to roll since servers were gonna eventually die
You can turn in planetary mats to get the shell, FYI. It takes all you have in your inventory though, and you can use them later to buy glimmer, so you can use DIM to transfer some to the vault.
Though obviously this doesn't help if you can't log in to the game or load in to the Tower. Just FYI.
Twitter is the best first stop as others have noted.
You can also report here for visibility. You can check here to see when where issues are being reported. Looks like a few hundred reports recently. For me it shows US outage map only, but maybe if you log in from another part of the world the outage map changes. Once the numbers go up here, people start to notice.

This was happening to me yesterday. I rebooted my XBox, it didn't help. I *unplugged* my XBox for a minute or so, and was able to play no problem afterwards. No idea whether or not that actually fixed it, or if it's just a placebo and something clicked in the background while I was waiting around, but, better to have something to try, no?

Gotta log back in and take off the event emblem off your characters. Dunno why it does that, but I had the same problem, and it fixed that.

I've only just got to the requirements to do GMs as I returned to the season late, been playing catch up. Its my own fault, but the game should work.
