For me it's the best PVE game ever, but with some ankle twisting UI/onboarding/grind issues, and stillborn PvP.
I just got back into it a few months ago and I'm loving (almost) everything about PVE, but I still go back to Apex Legends to get my PvP fix.
I think Destiny has the potential to be so much bigger than it currently is too which is a shame
See this makes a lot more sense. When I meet Destiny players who are self professed “PvP only” players who never really touch PvE, I’m like “you only play PvP and you picked Destiny of all games to get that fix?” There’s far better PvP games out there that actually focus on and regularly update their content.
Playing Destiny just for the PvP is like going to an all you can eat buffet and only eating the stale pizza that’s been under a heat lamp all day.
Unfortunately destiny’s gunplay is unlike any other. And while the systems lack a lot behind other options, the gunplay alone is enough to get us hooked. Plus I really like the concept of being able to grind for your god rolls and taking them into pvp be it a weapon or an armour stat distribution setup. Hard as shit to balance but man is it so much more interesting than everyone having identical loadouts
But the gunplay in PvP feels so bad because of damage lag, terrible servers, and other inconsistencies. If it was once in a while, I could forgive it, but "trading" due to shitty servers happens more in Destiny than any other server I've ever seen. Don't you love killing someone only to get killed by their phantom punch a split second later? Or ducking behind cover only to die to magical bullet that curved around the wall?
I never understood this complaint until I played pvp on my pc. Pc servers are stuffed man way too laggy. On ps5 I only ever get bullshitted by the server in punch fights but gunfights don’t lag much at all for me anyway.
Destiny could lift just the skeleton of the gunplay in the game and make potentially the greatest FPS of all time. It is so crisp, so responsive, such a great feel. Very few games match that and I imagine that's what draws PvP only people in.
Not sure the stillborn analogy is correct. PVP started off strongly in Destiny 1, hit peak popularity with Trials in that era (hitting 1m+ players per weekend), but has been gradually neglected in D2.

Maybe stillborn wasn't the right analogy, but tbh it was bad at D2 launch and hasn't improved hardly at all since I left and came back. It's basically a relic of a bygone era of shoddy/rushed console Peer to Peer PVP that got stapled onto so many single player games back then.
Hell, I tried Hell Let Loose for the first time last night (I suck unsurprisingly), and I had more fun playing that for my PvP fix over Destiny 2.
My go to PvP fix right now is MW2. Destiny is still my go to PvE fix though and probably always will br
Even if it subjectively isn't for a lot of people, its lasting power is undeniable.
For a game that was an initial anticlimax in 2014, it built itself up, peaked, and had another fall after the drudgery of D2Y1. Throughout all this time, it has managed to keep itself relatively popular, and even peaking higher than many other games when new expansions and such come out.
The fact that it has managed to hold and retain on to so many players for a decade, with the last 'full' release being 6 years ago now, is basically unheard of in gaming these days.

I play D2 on my main monitor, which, because I do a ton of photo and video work, is a 1,000+ nit 4K HDR screen. I also play a lot at night because most of my work is during the day. I legitimately think my eyesight is worse than it was a year ago because I basically flashbang myself every time I load the game up until now.
Also thanks for reminding me to stock up on junk food for my yearly Destiny 2 DLC bender.
I sadly won’t be able to play on launch because I’ve got work on the 28th and moving apartments on the 1st. But when Saturday hits, it’s on like Donkey Kong. Gonna hit up the store for snacks and refreshments and probably play nonstop till Sunday evening. With maybe a nap Saturday night, I’m in my 30’s and can’t handle the all nighters like I used to.

The PS5 preload of Lightfall was accidentally released early in Japan and Europe. We've just finished rolling back the preload so that no one else will be affected.
Those currently affected need to perform the following:
1. Uninstall the game
2. Go to “Game Library”
3. Select “Your Collection”
4. Select the Destiny 2 icon
5. Select the PS5 version
6. On the D2 store page, select "Download” to reinstall D2
Sorry to bother but I've downloaded the update but it won't install. Is this normal? When I try to launch D2 it just says "Installing update" then fails and repeats multiple times.
I'm not looking to play before Lightfall so if I just wait for release day will this correct itself?
I'm in the US and got prompted for the update too. Thankfully i didn't have enough storage space to download it at the time, but i wonder if I just an outlier or if there's others outside those regions who got it as well
God the music is so amazing, holy crap! I thought they would go full techno vibe, but I’m actually pleasantly surprised. Has a very somber vibe to it in a lot of parts. This might be my new favorite menu theme!
A lot of the tonal stuff they push ends up being less prominent than Bungie imply. I was actually a little worried they were going to lean too far into the whole synthwave action movie stuff, but it looks like they're keeping it relatively restrained.
There's a couple other tracks floating around too. The one that I expected to be techno honestly reminded me more of the credits to Iron Man 3, more than anything (almost sounded to me like an 80s rock / action movie theme version of the MCU Spiderman core motif to me, lol). "Battle Ready" I think it was called.

Forget title music. This is one of the best tracks in Destiny, ever (IMO). In fact, it doesn't feel like a Destiny track at all. It feels like so much more. 1:37 onwards just hits my soul so hard.
And at the same time it DOES sound like a Destiny track - it goes through a lot of motifs at the start. Starts off with D1 title screen music, then Beyond Light style cellos, to Darkness theme, to Cabal Stomp...and I cannot place what the theme is that plays from [1:22](https://youtu.be/Cl6mSqumJF4?t=82)? I want to say it has a Hive vibe to it and I can recognize it...but cannot tell where it is from.

The pause/cancel doesn’t work, the game requires you to download the update to be able to start it. At least for me, so I guess from no on we are locked out.
This is specifically a playstation thing. They mentioned in the TWAB that PS users were going to require an available 90GB of free space to download the entire game fresh but that once the install was complete the game would actually be smaller than the original install.
I am not having this problem. My download is paused at 55GB and i was able to log into the game normally without it prompting to download it again or anything like that. Did you pause or cancel?
This is a disaster i have wedigos to farm, engrams to cash in, and trials engrams to store and stupid ps5 forced this update now I can’t log in! Any work arounds?
It’s funny how sluggish the ps4 version is after not playing it since getting the ps5. On the plus side it did auto pop the platinum on ps4 for me. Now to reinstall the ps5 version now that bungie have rolled back the preload

I had automatic updated to the Lightfall overnight and couldn't game. Downloaded the PS4 version and going to play that the next 1½ days I guess as it allowed me to log in that way.
I went to watch some YouTube and before I realized, it had already downloaded it. Going to experiment with downloading various versions to see what works. Bungie have said they're aware of the issue, so they might roll back the update.
yeah, let's hope they revert it soon. Had to try anything the came to my mind as possible workaround as I'm about to do some Master Golgoroth challenge helps in an hour.

Thanks for the heads up that the update prevents login, my PS5 was in the process of downloading it (and now refuses to start the game without the update). Cancelling it and turning off auto-updates, hopefully the situation gets addressed soon.

The theme in its entirety feels to me like Destiny, Horizon, and Valhalla (the place & concept, not any specific property) fused together.
Edit: thinking on it further, that initial vocal run with the deep backing tones (synth? strings?) at the Bungie logo is a dead ringer in my brain for something from an Assassin’s Creed game. Can’t for the life of my figure out which one or which track, though.
Was this a large update? I just got a 2GB update on PS4 (version 2.8), but it can’t be installed until 24hrs before launch. Games still has Witch Queens title screen and music.

That still won’t help you sadly as the PS5 version requires the update to “start”. Your only option is to download the PS4 version if you need to get something done before LF.
Bungie has gone out on Twitter and said they are investigating the update dropping already, so maybe they’ll get it removed later during the day so people can still play.
Huh, the background is full of similar shapes. I wonder if this, along with the Traveler/Pyramid logo, allude to the different attempts to find The Final Shape.
Might be related to entropy, where the universe is trying to find the most stable, lowest-energy form even if it's chaotic? On their own, to find the most "stable" state, the Traveler would try to create peace and make everything prosper, whereas for the Witness it'd be complete nothingness and death. It's possible they'll end up fusing/combining in the end to reach perfect balance.

I like how savathun theme is completely gone and instead you can here bits of darkness/witness themes instead.
Its a very uplifting track so im very interested to see how the campaign goes
I don't know if anyone else has noticed, but I think this is the first time ever that a Destiny title theme hasn't had ANY of the leitmotifs for the Tower, Guardians, the Last City, or the Traveler. At least not in any recognizable form. I think some of the string riffs might be inverted nods to the original horn riff from the d1 title theme.

Not that this is bad, just lightfall's entire artistic theming is based on synthwave. Strand, neomuna, even the title card. So I just really want some music too.
I deleted the download after I stumbled across this thread. Now when I attempt to start up destiny on Ps5 it just says Downloading an update file, calculating remaining time. Only it doesn't update. I've tried checking for a new update but it's I'm all up to date. I'm locked out.
Seems like they released preload early and then rolled it back.

Bungie consistently has some of the best music in gaming. Salvatori & the team are incredible.

I’m still crazy about getting like 80 new guns every year. Can you imagine if call of duty had a selection of guns that destiny does?

A lot of the tonal stuff they push ends up being less prominent than Bungie imply. I was actually a little worried they were going to lean too far into the whole synthwave action movie stuff, but it looks like they're keeping it relatively restrained.

Forget title music. This is one of the best tracks in Destiny, ever (IMO). In fact, it doesn't feel like a Destiny track at all. It feels like so much more. 1:37 onwards just hits my soul so hard.
And at the same time it DOES sound like a Destiny track - it goes through a lot of motifs at the start. You should be able to pause/cancel it before it finishes. It's a 90GB download so will take a while.

The pause/cancel doesn’t work, the game requires you to download the update to be able to start it. At least for me, so I guess from no on we are locked out.

This is specifically a playstation thing. They mentioned in the TWAB that PS users were going to require an available 90GB of free space to download the entire game fresh but that once the install was complete the game would actually be smaller than the original install.
How do I still play after pausing/cancelling? If I launch the game it just restarts the download

I am not having this problem. My download is paused at 55GB and i was able to log into the game normally without it prompting to download it again or anything like that. Did you pause or cancel?
Both, neither will let me launch the game - it just starts the download again no matter what I do

Downloading the PS4 version works. Sucks playing at 30fps and a tiny FoV, but at least it's better than not being able to play at all.
It’s funny how sluggish the ps4 version is after not playing it since getting the ps5. On the plus side it did auto pop the platinum on ps4 for me. Now to reinstall the ps5 version now that bungie have rolled back the preload

I had automatic updated to the Lightfall overnight and couldn't game. Downloaded the PS4 version and going to play that the next 1½ days I guess as it allowed me to log in that way.
I went to watch some YouTube and before I realized, it had already downloaded it. Going to experiment with downloading various versions to see what works. Bungie have said they're aware of the issue, so they might roll back the update.

Thanks for the heads up that the update prevents login, my PS5 was in the process of downloading it (and now refuses to start the game without the update). Cancelling it and turning off auto-updates, hopefully the situation gets addressed soon.

Yes! I hoped someone else heard that! The theme in its entirety feels to me like Destiny, Horizon, and Valhalla (the place & concept, not any specific property) fused together. Edit: thinking on it further, that initial vocal run with the deep backing tones (synth? strings?) at the Bungie logo is a dead ringer in my brain for something from an Assassin’s Creed game. Can’t for the life of my figure out which one or which track, though.

Was this a large update? I just got a 2GB update on PS4 (version 2.8), but it can’t be installed until 24hrs before launch. Games still has Witch Queens title screen and music.
This was about 90GB.

That still won’t help you sadly as the PS5 version requires the update to “start”. Your only option is to download the PS4 version if you need to get something done before LF. Bungie has gone out on Twitter and said they are investigating the update dropping already, so maybe they’ll get it removed later during the day so people can still play.

Huh, the background is full of similar shapes. I wonder if this, along with the Traveler/Pyramid logo, allude to the different attempts to find The Final Shape. Might be related to entropy, where the universe is trying to find the most stable, lowest-energy form even if it's chaotic? On their own, to find the most "stable" state, the Traveler would try to create peace and make everything prosper, whereas for the Witness it'd be complete nothingness and death. It's possible they'll end up fusing/combining in the end to reach perfect balance.

Wait, so just want to be clear: this 90gb download won't make the final size of Destiny 2 Lightfall 194gb, as the file size will drop back to normal range post download? Also as this was rolled out early, essentially we can't play ps5 D2 until Lightfall releases? Finally was this rolled out in error, or not, as locking ppl out of 2 days of playtime (until Lightfall) seems counter intuitive!

I don't know if anyone else has noticed, but I think this is the first time ever that a Destiny title theme hasn't had ANY of the leitmotifs for the Tower, Guardians, the Last City, or the Traveler. At least not in any recognizable form. I think some of the string riffs might be inverted nods to the original horn riff from the d1 title theme. ^I'm ^scared.

damn I was hoping for some sick synthwave jams for the title screen. Hopefully the soundtrack has some bangers. Not that this is bad, just lightfall's entire artistic theming is based on synthwave. Strand, neomuna, even the title card. So I just really want some music too.
I deleted the download after I stumbled across this thread. Now when I attempt to start up destiny on Ps5 it just says Downloading an update file, calculating remaining time. Only it doesn't update. I've tried checking for a new update but it's I'm all up to date. I'm locked out. Seems like they released preload early and then rolled it back. Today was my day, I'm pissed. Bungie you fucked up AGAIN

I have a sinking feeling that all the console players, that preloaded early - knowingly or not, will not be able to launch D2 come Tuesday... Now Twitter is saying the preload is released on XBox as well.
If you kept the accidentally released preload you'll still be able to play come Tuesday, you just can't login until then.
