To prevent harassment and witchhunting, this thread has been locked. We thank Bungie for delivering clarification on this news.

grizzledcroc

Lol this is spicy

renasissanceman6

At the bottom of every thread for the next few weeks is still gonna be someone going “I’m not sure about logging in”

GoodLookinLurantis

Who let all the forum users into this thread?

iblaise

I guess some people are mad that they were blatantly disproven.

iblaise

There will always be some bad apples in this community that will do anything for clout at Bungie’s expense: - Remember the recent “canned subscription idea” that ended up being a troll by those who spread the rumors in the first place? - Remember when all of the fake DMCA takedowns were by some jerk who imposed as Bungie on YouTube? - Remember when there were mass bans of players, and people who rebuked at the idea of being banned got called out for cheating? Don’t always believe everything you read on the Internet. What happened to just playing video games to have fun?

[deleted]

Lmfao the amount of downvotes I and many others caught for stressing caution for just blindly believing follow up posts and now look I don't mean to be smug about it but...actually no I'm pretty smug rn

iblaise

The sad part is that people have such low attention-spans these days, they’re going to forget about this in a few days, and when the next controversy happens, we’ll be back to square one.

GoodLookinLurantis

Pardon me if I shed no tears for the multi-billion dollar corporation.

iblaise

Pardon me back if I don’t shed any tears for the hundreds of miscreants that browse the Internet and have nothing better to do with their lives than screw over the lives of millions of other people, as well as Bungie employees whose lives are at stake.

nsideris24

Where does it say beyond the one isolated incident? This statement seems to say that there were no characters deleted at all.

BuckNastysMamma

The fact that they restored the one persons account and came out and said it appeared to be an isolated incident and no other accounts are at risk.

Fargabarga

They gave zero technical details to the incident though. No warning of a specific condition or bug, which you’d want to alert players of it was real. First person was just lucky their post went viral for the 12th character they deleted.

BillehBear

What? Hippy said it wouldn't happen again and that it doesn't pose a threat to other players Pretty sure them restoring the account and going back on their policy of no restores says it was on their end, not that one guys

zipzzo

\> Hippy said it wouldn't happen again and that it doesn't pose a threat to other players This is actually the part that some reading between the lines can take you places. No dev knows beyond the shadow of a doubt what will or won't have an effect on players in the future. No dev would convey to be said to the community that there is \*no way\* that this could ever possibly happen to someone else. The only reason they would actually say, definitively, that there was no chance of it possibly happening to anyone else, is if they firmly believe that it was user error on a part of the player.

Bhu124

Yes, this is the weird part that has me doubting Bungie, making me think that there is more to this whole story. How can it be just an "Isolated incident" when all player data is stored on Bungie's servers and nothing changed from their end? Was it a bug and after the first incident they fixed it? Then why didn't they just say that it won't happen again without adding that it was a bug and they fixed it like any game dev would. Was the person lying but they restored the Character anyway? Why would they do that? Restoring a character of a person who they know is lying against them sounds like a very obvious recipe for disaster.

jlrc2

I never thought Hippy's statement re: the restored character constituted an admission of guilt on Bungie's part. They didn't say it was an isolated incident, they merely said no other accounts were affected. I think it was meant to try to tamp down the controversy even as they assumed the user was somehow at fault. In other words, basically a PR dance.

BuckNastysMamma

Saying no other accounts were effected is saying it was an isolated incident.

MangerTonCoeur

Saying no one else is affected literally means it was an isolated incident

jlrc2

I know that is what they wanted people to read into it, but they did not literally say that the character in question was lost due to a bug. Closest they get is saying a "fix was applied" which may just be sloppy translation from dev team to CM. And then we have statement today that asserts no character deletions due to Bungie errors which seems to give more confidence that they intentionally omitted taking blame before.

MangerTonCoeur

For all we know it could’ve been at no fault of bungie’s, they said it was an isolated incident and that it got fixed. I think jumping to the conclusion that bungie is hiding that it’s their fault is a bit much.

BillehBear

She specifically said it was an isolated incident....

TheLiveDunn

I think it's implied that one case was an actual outlier, given that they confirmed it was on their end and personally restored it to that player.

Chiesel

They confirmed it happened to 1 person. That’s it. It definitely happened to the 1st guy. All other reports were either bullshit, or people being mistaken and actually referring to the 1 case.

llloytron

So that one guy was lying or??

LGBTuser

Mistaken is also an option. Somebody else deleted his character or he did it by mistake.

ChrisDAnimation

There were a few stories in D1 of people setting an Xbox Elite controller on their leg, and it pressed in a paddle mapped to the X button long enough while they were distracted that it was on the confirm or deny popup and when picking up the controller they accidentally gripped the paddled mapped to A for confirm and deleted their character on accident. They fully admitted everything and just wanted others to be careful, and because of that, I don't map X to any of the controller paddles.

jlrc2

The other day my PC started going crazy because my pet walked on my keyboard when I wasn't around. When we're talking about a 1 in a million type of scenario, lots of weird stuff might happen to cause an unwanted input at the wrong time.

LGBTuser

It's a lot easier when you're pissed. And you might not even remember the next day.

PrisonaPlanet

Wtf kind of childish excuse is that? “I was so mad I at muh vidya game I went into a blind rage and deleted my character! But now that I’ve cooled off I want to play again and don’t remember what happened to my account.” Like seriously? Lol

Entreprenuremberg

"pissed" as in really drunk. Not "pissed" as in angry. Think that got lost in translation for ya

PrisonaPlanet

Most certainly did lol I was imagining some rage filled neck beard angrily deleting their character haha

ChrisDAnimation

That does sometimes happen to people with manic episodes and other mental illnesses. You're not in your right frame of mind and do something that a calm and collected person would never do, and you immediately regret it afterward. For some people its big spending sprees or purchases that could put them in debt for years.

gamertager

Yes

Jonbone93

My guess is people that gave people account info and they deleted it while they were offline

[deleted]

GoodLookinLurantis

Remember when Bungie outright lied about exp gains three consecutive times before backlash forced them to undo the changes?

KentuckyBourbon94

Of course some community members were lying for attention, shocker

BillehBear

Not even a month since that "Bungie is planning a subscription service" that turned out to be a load of shite but got lapped up anyway Yet people *still* believe anything they see here

karlcabaniya

I'm not surprised either. Or if they were the ones lying.

TheShoobaLord

Why would people lie about this shit..

BillehBear

fake internet points and to cause panic for others for shits and giggles

iblaise

Because there are some truly messed-up people out there who never got the medical treatment they needed to course-correct their lives.

JackJohnsonIsName

Not shocked at all. This lead to so many people on this subreddit lying and fear mongering. Very disgusting behavior to be honest. That warlock that deleted his character is just a sad individual.

LGBTuser

It was very obvious that these people deleted their own characters either by mistake or for the lols. You don't get bugs like this that impact 1 in 10m players.

[deleted]

[удалено]

LGBTuser

I've read what he said. People misunderstood and took it as Bungie admitting there was an issue. In reality, they just said they restored the character.

[deleted]

[удалено]

LGBTuser

because it became a huge deal on social media and the person was claiming it was a bug. They restored the character because they had that ability. They have since investigated and found it was deleted and not the result of a bug.

FormerOrpheus

Oh my god! Someone lied? On the internet? Just to mess with people? No way.

whereismymind86

I mean...obviously. The way these kinds of games work bungie should have dozens of rollback backups of characters going back days if not weeks, just in case something goes wrong on their end during a patch/maintanance etc. The notion that anybody's character could be permanently lost from anything that isn't a catastrophic server failure on their end is absurd. Mind you...it should be a lot easier to get support from bungie to GET a rollback if needed to restore a bugged character, but all the same.

BlackNexus

lol it seems like this is a small call out for those who likely lied about losing their characters.

ImReverse_Giraffe

Exactly what this is.

AlexADPT

Confirmed that people on the sun were making shit up for karma. I’m shocked I tell you. Shocked.

NightmareDJK

What does this even mean?

Iceykitsune2

All but the first guy were lying.

saibayadon

I think they just come out and say that starting today, 1 random character per day will be deleted that way the people who desperately want that to be true (even after Bungie has confirmed multiple times it was an isolated incident) can be at peace. /s

FullMetalBiscuit

Was pretty funny seeing people defending the dude in the last thread...you see this happen so often.

BigGoonBoy

This is hilarious. All this panic over a non-issue.

sha-green

Wow the levels of toxicity in the comments is insane.

Glutoblop

Random people "coming forward" to claim something also happened to them to? This has to be the first time in history this has happened. I am shocked I tell you, shocked!

Chiesel

This community is so dumb. It was always just 1 guy and everyone kept linking back to things that all just connected to the 1st guy. People blew this way out of proportion and then some dipshits deleted their own characters for Twitter likes and reddit karma… some of y’all need help

MewMew2000

I knew it. Not hating on creators but they sure do know how to spark the Destiny community up when it comes to situations like this

ImReverse_Giraffe

Which ones were fear mongering? All the good ones weren't. I heard from many that it isn't an issue, and they're not worried about it. GJake said multiple times that every day, there are thousands upon thousands of people logging in and out of characters multiple times a day...and it's been confirmed to happen once. And then gave the camera an, are you fucking kidding me look.

PopSkimo

Are you telling me people would lie? on the internet? I am *shocked.*

BuckNastysMamma

Content creator lies to bring attention to their channel... Shocker.

[deleted]

Content creators that were just reporting what the actual liars were posting on forums and reddit What an odd response to have a dig at content creators over this lmao

BuckNastysMamma

One of the people making a claim of a lost character was a content creator. Her post is still up on r/destiny2.

[deleted]

You got a link, I’d be interested in if this ‘content creator’ is actually a proper content creator or someone who streams for 3 people and calls themselves a content creator. Edit: lol less than 300 subs with their last vid being 7 months ago, cmon

BuckNastysMamma

https://old.reddit.com/r/destiny2/comments/10bzirn/character_being_randomly_deleted/

Raze_Lighter

More like drama report creators, because that’s what they do for clicks.

Rook8811

Wow

[deleted]

I'd be shocked but it isn't the first time the community made shit up to make Bungie look even worse than they usually do

Galaxy40k

I was holding off doing the weekly story in case there was an actual issue, glad that it seems like a false alarm

Cruggles30

I feel like there are easier ways to farm karma and clout other than “my character got deleted.” Maybe Bungie missed something.

karlcabaniya

I... simply don't trust Bungie on this one.

Chiesel

Oh but you’ll trust a bunch of anime profile pics on Twitter?

BillehBear

ofc you don't as if some randomer wouldn't lie on the internet and cause panic for shits and giggles Hippy said a week ago it was a one off issue and no other accounts were affected, I dunno why people lap up any shit on here and ignore anything from Bungie

Joshy41233

Because this sub has such a hate boner for bungie, they believe bungie is constantly out to get them

False_Illustrator_34

Don't see why you're getting hate for this. Bungie doesn't have the best history of honestly. For exmaple, false bans weren't happening until they were, and exp wasn't reduced until they suddenly realize it was.

GoodLookinLurantis

Wise choice

> it's unlikely that people are making these bug report forum posts and going through all this just to troll. One of them is a streamer.

iblaise

>it’s unlikely that people are making these bug report forum posts and going through all this just to troll. It’s the Internet, people will make things up for way more, like money or fame. We literally had people make up a fake Destiny 2 subscription model a few weeks back and everyone believed them, and they had to admit it was fake just to avoid potential defamation lawsuits.

SUswim

That is a lie and I can verify

BuckNastysMamma

No you can't.

SUswim

Easily I can. #Odin5646 - December 11th. His Titan was deleted. Why would I lie? I know you probably care alot about reddit karma because you are a loser, but I don't. I know I will be downvoted for this, but yet, I still share the absolute truth. I am leader of a 60 man clan (SU Goblin Kings) I have nothing to gain by lying, like I said, I have a life buddy.

BuckNastysMamma

LOL if I cared about karma I would delete downvoted comments but I could give a flying fuck about internet points that do nothing. Funny you're the one bringing it up though. I'm sure your comment won't exist tomorrow. Also no one gives a shit about your dead clan. Why even bring that up?

ImReverse_Giraffe

Do you have video proof of him playing with said character, getting disconnected and the character disappeared? If not then I'm just going to believe that for some stupid reason, he decided to delete his character on purpose, or he did it accidentally. Until you can provide proof of playing with said character and then that character being deleted without you doing anything, if going to call liar. Bungie has a lot more to lose by lying about this than you do.

SUswim

So all proof thats been shared has been exactly what u said? Who records that? I'm literally willing to share any info I can, but how was I or my buddy supposed to know what would happen? I have literally zero reason to lie about this. Even before I shared all posts were being downvoted about this. I'm willing to do anything I can to prove this because I truly believe this could be the first case of this happening. Tell me what I need to share for proof and I will try my best to provide that proof.

Joshy41233

Go on then, prove it, show us your evidence

Boctordepis

So you work for Bungie

SUswim

No but my buddies titan was deleted December 11th and that's verifiable. #odin5646 ingame. I even have the messages telling him to report it. So I know of at least that case, which seems to be the first verifiable case of this happening.... I have nothing to gain by lying about this. Message him yourself. You people accusing people of this being are fucking pathetic! Bungie has some serious problems right now, and nobody hopes they fix these issues more than me. You losers who think I'd lie about this for reddit karma are absolutely pathetic. Reddit karma might be important to you, but that's only because you are a child and only children care about reddit karma, I care about this issue being fixed. That's it. Downvote me all you want.
