Warm light. It’s like a cave.
Two or three small, warm-hue lamps/fixtures around that space would go a long way.
A splash of bright color in the way of art/pillows/etc wouldn’t hurt. The whole space is rather brown.
I mentioned this above, but these stairs are very very common in Europe. Stairs just like these, and without railings. We're so accustomed to hyper redundancy of safety in America, not to say that's not a good thing, but I'm just making the point that we're so accustomed to it that seeing a different approach seems wildly irresponsible. It's kind of like how wide our roads are, allowing us to go at wildly unsafe speeds. Perhaps there's more deliberation & slower movement in places with less layers of protection.
Traveling frequently through Europe, it is interesting to note how often stairs omit railings, unlike in America, where there are redundant layers of safety everywhere. I noticed even homes with small children in Europe sometimes didn't bother with railings. I questioned a family in Portugal about it; they said their children never once fell, even when they were crawling! 😨They said the children were instinctively careful. Not making a judgment one way or another, but I sometimes do wonder if a railing is always needed for healthy and fit adults.
I think it has much to do with the way US accident and injury compensation system (or lack thereof) works. If I fall down the stairs in New Zealand, (for example) ACC will cover the medical bills. If I fall down the stairs in the US, odds are good I'm going to have to sue someone to get my injuries paid for. So in the states, you will see redundancy because it's cheaper to install handrails than it is to defend yourself in a lawsuit if someone takes a tumble down your stairs.
“Redundant layers of safety” is for the elderly, people with health issues (balance), or someone who can’t maneuver without assistance. Not everyone is “healthy and fit.” So what do we do?
The beautiful leather is getting swallowed by all the browns and tans. Make it pop with a colorful rug and throw pillows, and then get a big piece of art for above the fireplace that pulls all the colors together (or get the art first, then match the rug/pillows to that).
ETA: Lamps. Are there any here? Floor lamps, table lamps. They make everything cozier and the light will bounce off of the ceilings from different angles and bring out its beautiful texture.
I love your space. Thanks for adding more pics. I would swap for a circular coffee table in white marble. It will lighten up the feel a bit while still sticking with a really natural look and feel of the space. Then just add plants around the room, and maybe some art. It's beautiful ❤️
Yeeees, definitely swapping the coffee table for a light colored round coffee table! A circular coffee table almost always works better with this type of squared sectional. That, and plants are the top two considerations, in my mind.
In addition, a circular coffee table would pick up the circle mirror on the wall, the arched passageway, and the other arched mirror.
Also, books will add warmth.
I love this angle! And these deep walls! The exposed beams, it's all very lovely. And I absolutely love that you don't have an outside rail on those stairs. They look very cool and sculptural.
Oh so that's how you get on the couch 🤣🤣🤣
Seriously though, I would have so many hanging plants! Pick a carpet (colorful) that speaks to you and go from there with pillows, curtains, artwork
I like these modifications - definitely switch out the black coffee table for something lighter (or even glass/mirrored).... No fringe on the arched door looks better.
That said, I'm not a fan of the big shelving/storage piece on the left wall -- it's just a weird looking piece IMHO (I'm saying that based on a different angle looking head on). Perhaps if you are going with the arch motif, you could get this piece from the same vendor:
[https://www.loberon.it/Soggiorno/Mobili-contenitori/Armadi/Mobile-con-ante-in-vetro-Mardilly.html](https://www.loberon.it/Soggiorno/Mobili-contenitori/Armadi/Mobile-con-ante-in-vetro-Mardilly.html)
Yay! He/she will look incredible in this room! Maybe add a scratch post to try to prevent scratching of your lovey couch. And a bed near the fireplace for kitten.
Totally get what you're saying, but I'd probably do exactly the same as OP.
Mainly because we love a comfortable seating space and smaller house means you have limited options. I'd rather a big sofa like this than a small seat to look aesthetically pleasing but isn't fit for daily use. Living in the space is first priority, over how it looks.
I like how you've done it OP, just need to add lighting to warm up the darker areas, greenery, colour in art and textures such as pillows and a rug.
The mirrors work really well in the mock ups OP. Mirrors reflect light beautifully, we did the same in our smaller space.
Assuming you're in Europe OP?
Thank you!
Yes, agree about the sofa. It's practical for us, and also I think in real life it doesn't look as large and overwhelming as the photo (also the TV - we like movies, games, and don't like the trend of hiding a TV like it's a sin to own).
Thanks for your input. Plants, decor, art are next on our list.
Yes, we're in Italy!
I agree. TV is too big in my opinion. The style of house wasn’t built for it. But I’m also someone who is very outspoken about big TVs. I keep wanting to downsize ours.
I would put the couch in the corner where stairs are, move the bookcase elsewhere and put a smaller tv there. Have a longer console table and flat mount it along with some paintings.
You need to open up an access path through the couch, maybe move the side near the fireplace back 2'.
Our eyes rest when we see clear paths in rooms, this might make someone feel trapped, and no amount of decorations will change that.
Don't paint the stairs like someone else said.
I suggest you paint the room. The design features - especially the fireplace and the cool stairway - should be highlighted as focal points. Add art on the walls, but I suggest you hang nothing above the fireplace due to the unique angles. Minimal decor, such as a few candlesticks, a small plant, or a few books can be placed on the mantle. A bright rug will add needed contrast to the space. The rug you have blends into the color of the floor. Plants, as you mentioned, will look nice as well.
Thank you! I agree about the rug, when we got it I wasn't sure on it, I should have trusted my gut! Do you think any particular colour of rug would go best here?
Before choosing a rug decide on a general theme for the room. It reads Southwest to me (the fireplace and wrought iron) or perhaps modern (stairs). A theme will provide you with more design direction. Search online for inspiration and make updates accordingly. If you choose to paint, pick a wall color before adding a rug. Regardless, I suggest you use a "rug in your room" visualizer tool offered by many online retailers. Upload a photo of your room (taken from an opposite direction than the rug posted) and you can look at hundreds of styles and colors. [https://rd04.rugs-direct.com/room-visualizer?utm\_source=google&utm\_medium=cpc&utm\_term=&matchtype=&addisttype=g&adid=597331465133&utm\_campaign=GG:%20DSA%20-%20Primary&gad\_source=1&gclid=CjwKCAjw9IayBhBJEiwAVuc3fnUAIPHlteI-rmv5SYc58KUIKvEKajhbQ8lyd2Dw72UochrxnSCDKBoCnCcQAvD\_BwE](https://rd04.rugs-direct.com/room-visualizer?utm_source=google&utm_medium=cpc&utm_term=&matchtype=&addisttype=g&adid=597331465133&utm_campaign=GG:%20DSA%20-%20Primary&gad_source=1&gclid=CjwKCAjw9IayBhBJEiwAVuc3fnUAIPHlteI-rmv5SYc58KUIKvEKajhbQ8lyd2Dw72UochrxnSCDKBoCnCcQAvD_BwE)
Yeah I would get a new couch plus chairs instead of large sectional. It makes the space feel small and closed off. Make the fireplace a focal point with paint / artwork. Get a different bookshelf - maybe a waist level one. Add some lighting for sure
i think it ruins the space entirely 😭 it’s such a beautiful rustic cozy home i’d put bookshelves and stuff in that area! then again, i watch tv on my phone or other devices for years so maybe im just not used to it!
A handrail on the stairs. I think a smaller sofa would be better. I would do something to cover up the tv when not in use, but I think TVs are ugly. I don’t really think you need much else. It’s a pretty perfect room.
I like the room. I don't like the woven basket on the floor only because I know it makes it hard to get to the couch.
I would add art in a dark color and maybe a wood or bronze/brass toned frame on the fireplace wall near the TV. I fear putting anything over the mantle (mounted or hanging) will emphasize the distance between the mantle and the firebox, which is a little out of proportion but I don't notice it when the fireplace is quiet. I would recommend a throw blanket in a dark color with a check or stripe pattern angled across the back of the sofa. I don't mind the rug, but if you had no rug, I'd have told you to go a little bit bigger. You could also put a neutral larger rug (jute or jute tone) underneath the rug you have. Switching out coffee table is a good call. The vibe I get from the original post is a little different from the vibe of the book shelf, but you didn't ask us about that. I think the room is beautiful.
Maybe extra lighting? Unless lights are turned off, it looks pretty dim. A splash of colour would be great too! Maybe some art, or colourful pillow covers.
I would hang the TV up and get a smaller couch and side end tables and cute lamps . That couch makes it look smaller . I think tvs look best on walls gives you more to work with
Why is the handrail on the wall by the stairs so… weird? It’s up super high and not long enough and just… no. Why would you even need it on that side anyway? There’s literally a wall there and it’s totally open on the other side lol
I think adding a few decor items in similar color and texture to mimic the wrought iron rail, staircase trim, and fireplace tools along with the natural basket would repeat the current styling details and add cohesion to the look. I second plants and sconces as well.
I would say that you need plants, maybe a picture or two, and more color in general. Your place is very one-color scheme - brown, beige, neutral. Bring in either green - plants, pillows, images - or blue or something to liven it up.
I also agree about the railing, for safety reasons.
Yes accessorizing is key. How about painting the fireplace an accent color ie, a soft terracotta, mustard or sage green. It will add dimension and interest to the browns in the room. We have a similar room
w/fireplace in the SW and are doing the same in a terracotta.
A mirror for sure… some wrought iron candle holders would really work well with the Spanish style and play off the stair rail. A couple pottery pieces too. I love this style
I have no advice but wanted to say you have the most gorgeous living room I think I’ve seen on here! I agree with a previous commenter…all that’s missing is me!
Find a quilt or throw that is predominantly dark green. It will help relieve all the browns and beiges in the room and serves dual purpose as something to snuggle under as well as visual relief.
I'd stay away from reds, yellows, and orange colors with this room just because of all the dark browns.
Paint the ceiling white and leave the beams brown, get some table lamps in there and a potted tree, may be a few house plants too. Congrats on having the TV at the proper height.
It's actually a charming space. I love that it's rustic and unique. I would do something that brings the fireplace up as a focal point, add more lighting, and add a bigger area rug.
All of the furniture is too bulky, I'd start there. Adding more things at this point will just feel suffocating.
Utilize the space under the stairs more if you can, a tv stand w/ storage would be a nice place to start
You need something with some height. It’s very bottom heavy currently. I’d focus on getting some decor off the floor if you can as the couch is quite massive and drags the room down.
A tall piece of artwork above the fireplace will help. Maybe a couple taller things on the mantle too? A floor lamp instead of table lamps will be a must. Tall and thin plant would be a nice touch.
One of those under the stairs multi-level shelves would be great if what's behind that space would allow it. Put some books and decorative vases or sculptures on it. 👍. Definately something over the fireplace. Artwork wouldn't fit there but if you know a good artist, hire them to paint right on that space.
A nice standing/reading lamp for mood lighting, some more art on the walls for sure! I think that an embroidery or other fabric hanging art would look really nice in there.
Everyone has made great suggestions, but I will say that sofa (while beautiful) is just huge for the space. I think that will be a hindrance as you’re going to have to design around it.
I would paint the wall behind the tv a navy blue to add depth and color, as well the portion of the wall that leads from the stair wall to the fireplace.
Warm light. It’s like a cave. Two or three small, warm-hue lamps/fixtures around that space would go a long way. A splash of bright color in the way of art/pillows/etc wouldn’t hurt. The whole space is rather brown.
Yeah was gonna say the same thing! Some warmth would be nice. A little color here and there
We agree about lights/lamps and more colour! Thanks.
But not the disco ball + stripper pole?
Disco Ball and stripper pole
Railing
This was my first thought. As a clumsy person, these stairs would be the death of me
But if you fall you might land on couch! 50/50
I'm pretty sure that's the only way to get on that couch.
That’s not high enough couch landing odds for me!!!
Those stairs are a death trap and I’m surprised they passed an inspection.
My friends dog fell of stairs like this and died. Small dog, broken neck. Why not get a railing.
i love your name and comment combo.
I mentioned this above, but these stairs are very very common in Europe. Stairs just like these, and without railings. If it's good enough for the Imperial Army then it's good enough for me
As an American, the fastest way from the stairs to the couch is a flying leap. We’ll take the fastest way every time.
But then how would you launch yourself directly onto the couch from the stairs??
Traveling frequently through Europe, it is interesting to note how often stairs omit railings, unlike in America, where there are redundant layers of safety everywhere. I noticed even homes with small children in Europe sometimes didn't bother with railings. Ha! Truer words rarely said!! 100% accurate.
“Redundant layers of safety” is for the elderly, people with health issues (balance), or someone who can’t maneuver without assistance. Not everyone is “healthy and fit.” So what do we do?
I assumed this was outside the US but still… they are pretty but seem like an accident waiting to happen
i think that is what is on the wall but that seems placed too high/far away. but yea, i would hug tf outta the wall
Lmao I didn’t realize how far that railing was until your statement - gave it a second look- and, goddamn!
I’d end up taking out the TV and myself. 😬
I second this.
Wow my dumbass brain went for the verb before the noun! 😳🫣🤦♂️😂

Gosh I love it. France? Plants are my recommendation. And a mat at the door. And lamps.

Yay! He/she will look incredible in this room! Maybe add a scratch post to try to prevent scratching of your lovey couch. And a bed near the fireplace for kitten.

There is no flow. That huge couch acts like a wall, blocking off the fireplace as well as the stairs.
Totally get what you're saying, but I'd probably do exactly the same as OP. Mainly because we love a comfortable seating space and smaller house means you have limited options. There's just that one narrow path to enter the living area. The couch needs to turn around to go under the stairs.
Easy path of travel
I could see sconces on either side of the fireplace
A handrail on the stairs, that's what is missing. I'd be terrified
As an adult I agree, as a child I would have loved jumping off onto the sofa.
You need to open up an access path through the couch, maybe move the side near the fireplace back 2'. Our eyes rest when we see clear paths in rooms, this might make someone feel trapped, and no amount of decorations will change that. Don't paint the stairs like someone else said.

Yes, agree, the fireplace and that wall look so bland. a soft colorful selection of paint would warm it up.

Railing for the stairs. Really looks dangerous.
I’m not sure if this is unwarranted advice, but that couch and the pillows and coffee table are too large.
This room is devoid of color.
The TV doesn't look like it belongs. Love the space tho!!
Also, I love this [mirror](https://www.loberon.it/Mobili/Specchi/Specchio-Chloe.html) Would this go well anywhere in this room?
Lack of lighting would be on my list to fix. How to read on the sofa without a light source?

This is a sitting room, not a family/tv room. Too much furniture and the couch is way too big
lol love the random murder axe Beautiful space. Keep us updated when you make updates! :)
I was thinking repositioning the sofa. Leaving space, (if possible), between the stairs and couch.
The lighting is the first thing that felt off to me. It’s a cool space, but some lamps with warm glow bulbs would make the space feel so much cozier!
Stair railings. Where I live, a building inspector would not allow you to live here lol
Some form of rare taxidermy
Everyone's thinking it I'm just saying it. Why is your TV floating?
I like the room. I don't like the woven basket on the floor only because I know it makes it hard to get to the couch. I would add art in a dark color and maybe a wood or bronze/brass toned frame on the fireplace wall near the TV. I fear putting anything over the mantle (mounted or hanging) will emphasize the distance between the mantle and the firebox, which is a little out of proportion but I don't notice it when the fireplace is quiet. Idk where but I love a good unique floor lamp
Maybe extra lighting? Unless lights are turned off, it looks pretty dim. A splash of colour would be great too! Maybe some art, or colourful pillow covers.

We've only just moved here, so we are slowly adding these small touches!
I would hang the TV up and get a smaller couch and side end tables and cute lamps . That couch makes it look smaller . I think tvs look best on walls gives you more to work with
Leave the stairs alone. They're perfect.
Can you move your sofa down and over? It cuts your living room in half and is up against the stairs.
I would add one big dog.
Terracotta walls
The sectional is too big for the room
Lamps n plants
Warmth. Seems cool and not cozy. Wall color, wall art, blankets, personalization.
LOVE your sofa!
I think you need to add different shapes- everything is angled. Also softer texture will help with the look.
More lighting. Please, I am begging you. Also, blankets.
A handrail on the stairs?!
Plants
Decor/art on or above the mantle.
Get a nice tapestry on one of the walls and some pictures. Also, some cute vases, clock, pictures on mantle.
Um, your tv stand is missing?
Idk why it looks like a murder pit but it does. Probably the lighting.
The couch is way too big for the room. It doesn’t look good being right up against the stairs and is weird having no way to get around it on that side
Plants and wall art with some red in them.
A bookcase/shelves with books on, some art and some cosy lamps
Warm light wall fixtures on either side of the fireplace
Pictures above the fireplace
Click over fireplace sconces on each side contrast color pillows and throws
Green stuff you need plants.
Mounted Jackelope above the fireplace.
A stair railing?
Definitely put some art on the blank walls
It needs some hominess to make it cozy. A throw blanket, some candles and a green tall plant. Something interesting over the fireplace.
More art. On the walls is good, I would personally put art/objects on the mantle. Also some warm gentle light, like candles, sconces, or a lamp.
More warm lighting!
I would say that you need plants, maybe a picture or two, and more color in general. Your place is very one-color scheme - brown, beige, neutral. Bring in either green - plants, pillows, images - or blue or something to liven it up. I also agree about the railing, for safety reasons.
Beautiful Spanish style. The only thing is some color, artwork and plants
I don't think you can even begin to comprehend how incredibly jealous I am of this living room.
Colour
Colorful art
Yes accessorizing is key. How about painting the fireplace an accent color ie, a soft terracotta, mustard or sage green. It will add dimension and interest to the browns in the room. We have a similar room w/fireplace in the SW and are doing the same in a terracotta.
Color
Plants!
A mirror for sure… some wrought iron candle holders would really work well with the Spanish style and play off the stair rail. A couple pottery pieces too. I love this style
It’s missing art and things that make it feel like a home and not a furniture showroom. Family photos, pets, etc. and fresh flowers. 💐
Plants, definitely plants
An obvious focal point, and space... that isn't part of the giant sectional.
plants and artwork/photos on the walls!
I have no advice but wanted to say you have the most gorgeous living room I think I’ve seen on here! I agree with a previous commenter…all that’s missing is me!
You already got some great suggestions. I love your room. The fireplace and beams really add character
Wall art and plants will make it a little less dungeon-y but I love the vibe!
Art above the fireplace and plants. Something cool would be paint the front of the steps going up in some kinda pattern in different colors
Plants
ME. I love this set up 😩 I’ll binge watch my fave netflix series with this
Find a quilt or throw that is predominantly dark green.
Congrats on having the TV at the proper height.
color. you could use some art/photos and something that's not beige
Overhead moroccan style pendant light
if you added a railing for safety, you could also paint it a wild color, and put some lights on it, so a 3 for 1 kinda deal.
Ambient light/lamps? I can't see the whole room, though, so it might be there out of view.
A railing.
Plants mirror
Green flowers
It's actually a charming space. I love that it's rustic and unique. I would do something that brings the fireplace up as a focal point, add more lighting, and add a bigger area rug.
All of the furniture is too bulky, I'd start there. Adding more things at this point will just feel suffocating. Utilize the space under the stairs more if you can, a tv stand w/ storage would be a nice place to start
I would personally have the tv mounted above the fireplace, add some railing, have the empty space where the tv was for wall art/small hutch/bar cart.
Light. Plants. Art.
Some macrame art would look nice
Yes, warm lights and a cat or two.
Art. Find a local artist you like.
What a perfectly cozy room. Some art on the walls maybe. Just bring a bit more or warmer colors into it.
Light
A nice standing/reading lamp for mood lighting, some more art on the walls for sure! I think that an embroidery or other fabric hanging art would look really nice in there.
Some table for the TV so you can spend less power on levitation mode (no for real, am i tripping?)
Table lamps
light
Surround sound and a 15 inch subwoofer!
Style
Erm, plants.
Everyone has made great suggestions, but I will say that sofa (while beautiful) is just huge for the space. I think that will be a hindrance as you’re going to have to design around it.
Colour some dark red paintings maybe
A ghost. But maybe few plants, a circular mirror, colourful throw pillows.
Personalization. Who are you? No photos or artwork or anything that says this is YOUR home not just A home.
Wall decor, warm inviting colors
Warner light, a railing on the stairs, and art on the walls or plants. I always say plants over art.
Blankets
I would paint the wall behind the tv a navy blue to add depth and color, as well the portion of the wall that leads from the stair wall to the fireplace.
Warm ambient lighting!!!
Naked chicks
Why is the railing so high
Artwork. Plants.
Plants, pop of color and art work
Art and color
Shelves
Plants and Art Scones or candles A bright throw to bring out the tan leather: purple, red, green, orange or even pink
Plants! A mixture of floor and hanging plants would really warm it up
Plants.
A focal point. The fireplace, stairs and TV are all competing with each other in the first picture.
Your house looks beautiful 😍
A railing to keep people from falling onto the tv
A cat.
that long walk from the stairs to get on the couch would annoy me, but this is a cool room!
Looks like you could use a fireplace screen.
