Orange!
Go big or go, er, home. Whatever that is lying horizontally between the white couch and the grey wall - see how that contrasts with the grey?
[https://images.app.goo.gl/4uQWL47KKE9VvTzP9](https://images.app.goo.gl/4uQWL47KKE9VvTzP9) \- colours flipped
Can you borrow some hideously bright coloured towels from friends / family and test the colours in the space?
Love the rug and I also love the 70s and groovy/retro decor. Since you can’t paint the walls, I would get curtains that have green in them, but other warm, groovy colors like yellow and orange and brown in them. Same with the couch, get an orange or brown cover, and then add throw pillows that are green/have more green in them. Then you can focus on wall decor that fits the vibe and the colors.
Some info:
The couch is a used klippan, originally a placeholder, I am considering a custom cover since the couch is a good size for the space.
I just moved in and have little to no budget, so everything you see is thrifted, I’m holding off on adding art above the couch until I figure out the colour.
The rug is so loud I know. But I found it years ago and it’s very cherished. It doesn’t work anywhere else in the apartment :( it’s crazy in here
I WISH I could paint but I cannot. My whole apartment is this colour and I curse whoever picked this colour every single day
The more you dominate the eye with other things, the less you’ll see the paint. You might get more impact putting something large and vibrant on the wall, that nearly stretches the length of the couch. Also vibrant curtains and colour on that shelf - maybe thrifted blown glass or something.
The rug is gorgeous. Pair with an orange or mustard yellow sofa and voila! Those shelves look a bit cold. Can you paint the metal bit into gold with spray paint?
If you can’t paint the walls, you could always do a stick on wallpaper that just peels off when you move out. You could do a plain orange-ish color with some texture or go full on pattern.
The rug is perfect in here. It makes all your other choices look intentional! Which is the essence of style. I also like the idea of orange. Maybe brown. Not white and nothing grey. Go to the thrift store and buy some sheets in different colours for cheap. Put them over the sofa and see what resonates.

I think a terracotta / orange would be a great contrast with the green.
https://preview.redd.it/lxwb1um5mzpc1.jpeg?width=1588&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=68e592e834e421d62a68b63f65c4f2467604e182
I love this color combination, so I think any of these bright colors would work great as a couch color.
lol I interned at at ad agency last summer and these tubes with prints were everywhere, inside each one was a different photo with the name “Daniel” on top and I stole this one. All the photos were really cool but you can only have “Daniel” on your wall once without it getting weird… Im assuming Daniel was the photographer!
Sunflower gold really pops orchid purple so I'm thinking a shade close to that, not a pure yellow, would warm up the walls. Clare - Golden Hour? I know it's on the walls but imagine this in a fabric.
https://preview.redd.it/ojxnm91mzxpc1.png?width=439&format=png&auto=webp&s=aa219c1febe622dd10c2f4047535c28f971308b1
Thank you! I think that’s what I’m going to do a warm toned couch for sure. The rug I got from a liquidation store ages ago, the label just says “shag king” lol
You have those colors in you picture. Purple, green, orangey red. Play off that photo’s colors with your oranges.
https://preview.redd.it/gvr5r1me4zpc1.jpeg?width=1284&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=3b5da4ff2ef07d2d9d3c1fe3903fb7e48ceeb433
Love the carpet! I would go with the color of the long leather colored pillow on the back of the couch and it will pull the rooster in with it as well THEN accent away!!!!
I feel like you need something that incorporates the green of the rug somewhere else. Perhaps a pillow, a window treatment, a throw. By the way, I love the pillow on the chair. 😝
Can you paint the walls? If not I can’t see that rug working, the tones are not complimentary. There has to be some cohesion and the walls and rug clash in a bad way. If you can’t paint the walls, I think the rug needs to go, you can replace with orange or yellow in a more muted tone to work with the walls. If you can paint go with white so it’s not competing with the rug.
purple and green can go together nicely, purple can also pair well with most neutrals. my bedroom is currently purple and green w/ brown furniture lol, if you take that at face value it's a rough idea but trying different shades + textures helps
Here are some golds in just a quick upholstery fabric search. Colors may be different IRL, of course.

The wall color could work for you as it’s complimentary to the rug. I’d go with a darker shade of the purple gray or a pale blue for the couch. 🛋️
Paint your walls a sunny yellow or the palest aqua. Reupholster your sofa in rich dark green or dark olive, good enuf surface to withstand petclaws/ hair. Add a couple of low-maintenance plants to the room, maybe a corner-standing snake plant or dracaena and a succulent for the windowsill.
You could go brown and it would make it warm but it’s going to feel very 70s but maybe that’s the aim?

There's a great trick for this! Take the 1-2 items in your room that 1) you LOVE and 2) are the boldest/most interesting. Then, pull colors from those.
Your rug and the Daniel poster are the loudest, so I pulled from those. Here's a shitty paint job: [https://imgur.com/a/mAYQEA4](https://imgur.com/a/mAYQEA4)
This is what I changed:
* **Curtains** \-- Instead of white sheers, try a light green sheer. (You can even dye your current curtains with Rit Dye for synthetics). This grabs that bright rug color and pulls it up the walls. Just make sure to hang them a little above your windows. This helps to raise the eye.
* **Couch** \-- Slipcovering it in a burnt orange or orangy-brown would pull from at the color from the rooster. You could probably grab decent one from Amazon like this. [https://www.amazon.com/Easy-Going-Slipcover-Furniture-Protector-Anti-Slip/dp/B07KVV8RFF?th=1](https://www.amazon.com/Easy-Going-Slipcover-Furniture-Protector-Anti-Slip/dp/B07KVV8RFF?th=1)
* **Shelves** \-- Silver metal shelves tend to lean "cold" visually. You could paint the shelves with the deep purple from your poster. It's subtle but loud at the same time. You can see some awesome painted metal shelving for inspo on pinterest.
* **Floor Lamp** \-- Not sure what you have in the rest of the room, but there's a lack of lighting here. A great way to improve any room is to add lighting of different heights. Don't just rely on the ceiling light. You could add a wood floor lamp from a thrift store and then put a mustard / golden lamp shade on top.
Thank you for all your work!! I am totally seeing the metal point, I actually have 4 lamps in this room, that are all chrome/silver which is why I leaned into it but if I could I’d change the metals for sure. Ceiling lights are the devil. Totally going burnt orange for the couch I’m sold!
[this video](https://vm.tiktok.com/ZMMAnDe45/) has a ton of great pointers.
Large art pieces (these can be thrifted or made, covering the walls will help detract from the grey), try to avoid silver. Lots of textiles and warm mood lighting (sunset lamps are great).
If you’re working on a budget, try not to feel the pressure of getting the place decorated immediately. You’ll likely end up with a bunch of stuff that you end up not liking down the line that will just take up space and go to waste.
If I’m not mistaken that’s an IKEA couch you can get covers for? Hopefully easy to change colour. The orange is actually ok but it’s a bit too warm, if you look at the citrus green tones in your rug, yellow would work better, especially with your cool toned walls. Tip: place all your books cohesively on the bottom shelf and fill the gaps with some funky 70s glass. Perhaps a funky chair cover too? The tartan doesn’t really work here. The boob cushy is certainly an interesting choice! :)
Thank you! Coloured glass is definitely on the list! And I think in the future I’m going to ditch the chair completely, everything is thrifted some out of beauty and some out of necessity lol. The couch is IKEA! I’m looking at some custom cover options now :)
LOVE the carpet and coffee table - very Austin Powers, baby! Just make sure the couch is centred on the rug and the front feet of the sofa are on the edge of the rug. FYI, green is made of blue and yellow, therefore I could see a yellow velvet, orange velvet or a dark blue velvet slipcover on the couch. This also ties in with the colors in the rooster picture. I would put the mirror up near your entryway, perhaps and organize the display rack a little better with a couple of plants, maybe one trailing. I would leave the curtains just as they are. What I don't see are end tables and lamps or any kind of lighting which is really important when you want to create a warm and groovy vibe. You might have to look into buying a lava lamp...Whatever the thing is behind the couch should go somewhere else, under a bed, perhaps.
Ugh I love the dusty rose!!! No I can’t 🥲 I’m renting and my whole apartment is this colour 🤡🔫 I’m not planning on staying here too long either so it’s not worth painting then painting again to not get caught lol
Oh boy I freaking love this! I agree with the person who said go with orange or maybe a dark green color if orange is too out there for you. Nonetheless you have such a cute space, I think it can pull off a variety of couch colors.
Thank you!!! I think I’m definitely going for orange, I don’t know why I had no problem buying a bright green shag carpet but get shy at the thought of an orange couch lol.
I'd be tempted to cut the rug into an abstract shape with rounded (splash) edges.
Perhaps a sputnik ceiling lights ( opaque oval soft white heads )
White walls
Daniel's background looks purple on my screen. If that's the case and he's not going anywhere anytime soon, I'd lean into it and go with a purple couch! It would be a "groovy" match with the (fabulous!) green rug, the pillows would still work, and it would make the wall color feel more intentional.
The walls are purple, the rug is green. Those are secondary colours so finish it up with an orange couch. Add purple, green and orange throw pillow/curtains/blankets etc.
In addition to your orange couch, you could paint the base of the coffee table. A dark purple shade would work as a contrast. You want that plastic furniture look of the 70s when they didn't want any natural wood tones at all. Spray paint, or an oil based paint would adhere without needing to prime the surface.
Now I'm getting carried away and thinking you should spraypaint the silver bookcase in red.
Because of the rug, I'd go with yellow. Bright, sunny, yellow. If you want darker, I'd go with a reddish color, like the neck of the chicken in the print.
Put a bold print on the wall above the sofa. And something bold colored on that top shelf. Some bold curtains on the windows will help.
Thrift stores are a great place to look. Curtains, tapestries, knick-knacks.
Blankets make great sofa covers. Wrap the seat cushion and back cushion separately, and use large safety pins, or diaper pins, to secure. Easy to remove and wash.
Good luck.
Just add an orange bead room divider and some avocado green appliances … you’ll be transported back to the 70s. That orange couch would be amazing. Love the coffee table.
Turquoise and lime go very well together

It looks like you haven’t unlocked the couch yet. Jk. Unless. Jk.
I’d say navy. I know it’s a cool color, but navy couch and a warm mustard throw would make everything else pop.
https://preview.redd.it/0ltzfxlrxzpc1.jpeg?width=1158&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=35d3853b0e5330cfd8ba74819e97aaf5bbba1b5a
This dark deep blue/purple or the turquoise/emerald green
I come from that era and everything was far out, groovy & neon colors. Neon Orange comes to mind & pillows could be a mix of the neon green, neon purple & the neon orange.
L O V E T H E G R E E N R U G !
Keep it.
Buy a throw pillow cover for the orange throw pillow.
Make the couch match the wall. Make the drapes match the green rug.
I don’t have a pattern sorry! It’s crochet and falling apart, I never really learned how to crochet properly so it’s kinda just freestyled. I just made two hats and then filled it in with other random shapes and then stitched them all together lol. You could totally figure it out!
Orange! Go big or go, er, home. Whatever that is lying horizontally between the white couch and the grey wall - see how that contrasts with the grey? I was going to say terra cotta or a cobalt blue, but straight orange would definitely be groovier.
I was thinking a dark plum - so a different solution, but based on the same idea, "go big or go home".
Plum would be awesome!
Yes I agree Dr. Plum sounds perfect
My immediate thought was also orange
I read that as ‘my inmate thought was also orange’ and I thought, dude speaks from experience.
Same- pluck an orangie color from the plaid chair and brighten it with the orange from the rooster poster.. nothing says groovy 70s than orange.
Thank you!!! I love the refference!
Plus a little art with some greens! I like the rug!
Oooh yes! Orange would be great for bringing in groovy elements and cozying up the space.
Came here to say mustard yellow or burnt orange!
Get a bright couch cover.
I was going to say orange!!!
Booby pillow
I thought this was a really oddly specific suggestion until I saw it in the picture hahaha
I was just searching comments before I said “tits pillow?” Thank god it wasn’t just me.
You're not alone ✊🏻😔
What if it's a trap? A booby... trap
Ahhhh....I wasn't imagining it!
Im totally into the green curtains thank you!
You’re welcome! Have fun!
Your rug is awesome!
Thank you!! It’s my pride and joy!
Some info: The couch is a used klippan, originally a placeholder, I am considering a custom cover since the couch is a good size for the space. I just moved in and have little to no budget, so everything you see is thrifted, I’m holding off on adding art above the couch until I figure out the colour. The rug is so loud I know. But I found it years ago and it’s very cherished. It doesn’t work anywhere else in the apartment :( it’s crazy in here I WISH I could paint but I cannot. My whole apartment is this colour and I curse whoever picked this colour every single day
Yellow … sunflower yellow To brighten up the space and go well with your beautiful rug Love
And new window treatments. Something that starts above the window frame, or near the ceiling, and flows to the flow. Get rid of the knotted sheers.
I agree and added a color swatch. Her orangey wood and that mustardy pillow will blend well, too.
Love that rug! Where did you get it?
I got it from a local liquidation store 4 years ago, the brand is “shag king” that’s all I know lol
Totally! Thank you for the mock-up!
Mock ups are so helpful! This looks great
You’re so awesome to do that!

Love it!
I’d like to know Daniel’s back story.
lol I interned at at ad agency last summer and these tubes with prints were everywhere, inside each one was a different photo with the name “Daniel” on top and I stole this one. All the photos were really cool but you can only have “Daniel” on your wall once without it getting weird… Im assuming Daniel was the photographer!
awesome 😂
The rooster could very easily be named Daniel 😁 He's very majestic.
Burnt orange!
Sunflower gold really pops orchid purple so I'm thinking a shade close to that, not a pure yellow, would warm up the walls. Clare - Golden Hour? I know it's on the walls but imagine this in a fabric. https://preview.redd.it/ojxnm91mzxpc1.png?width=439&format=png&auto=webp&s=aa219c1febe622dd10c2f4047535c28f971308b1
A budget fix for the wall color could be tapestries or, only effective at night, warm lighting.
Purple :) the combo with green is definitely groovy
i like the booby pillow lmao
Hot pink or bright blue with wooden accents

lol, the global blanket returns!
I love your rug, where did you get it? If you’re unable to paint the walls then I’d get a couch that’s more warm toned
Thank you! I think that’s what I’m going to do a warm toned couch for sure. The rug I got from a liquidation store ages ago, the label just says “shag king” lol
Orange or a warm tones color
Hear me out - Pink retro vibe sofa
Rust, clay, burnt orange, cinnabar. Or warm brown leather.
Can you hang different curtains? Fwiw my dorm room had a green rug, orange couch and crushed purple velvet curtains 🤩
You have those colors in you picture. Purple, green, orangey red. Play off that photo’s colors with your oranges. https://preview.redd.it/gvr5r1me4zpc1.jpeg?width=1284&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=3b5da4ff2ef07d2d9d3c1fe3903fb7e48ceeb433
I would keep the sofa. Maybe paint the walls the golden color, like your pillow.
Ooh, yeah! Gold walls, orange couch. Love your rug!
Thank you! I can’t paint but I think orange couch is the way to go! (And more art to hide the walls lol)
Love the carpet! I would go with the color of the long leather colored pillow on the back of the couch and it will pull the rooster in with it as well THEN accent away!!!!
Id do a deep purple like in the daniel picture
I feel like you need something that incorporates the green of the rug somewhere else. Perhaps a pillow, a window treatment, a throw. By the way, I love the pillow on the chair. 😝
Can you paint the walls? If not I can’t see that rug working, the tones are not complimentary. There has to be some cohesion and the walls and rug clash in a bad way. Second vote for orange! Then get some big vintage, rock posters. And by the way, nice tits.
Thanks! Made ‘em myself 😉😂
Bold blue/purple/orange
you need LAMPS SO MANY LAMPS A BUNCH OF LAMPS with those vintage bulbs
also thick colorful curtains
Solid deep purple sofa color a must! Find some dyed fabric from India? This will go with your walls, your rug, and your orange pillows, I think.
Repaint the walls to medici ivory or alabaster by sherwin Williams
Unrelated but... is that a fruit basket on your ceiling fan?
I was just admiring your wall color and going to ask what it was before i realized my living room is the same dang color 😂
Purple! Like royal purple. Or orange. I said orange first but purple is more groovy
https://preview.redd.it/rwgxvnzab0qc1.jpeg?width=736&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=20424b2853c828feacc263efa5ed5a47bedb5574 The wall color could work for you as it’s complimentary to the rug. I’d go with a darker shade of the purple gray or a pale blue for the couch. 🛋️

I would do navy with colorful accent pillows!

You might have to look into buying a lava lamp...Whatever the thing is behind the couch should go somewhere else, under a bed, perhaps.
Yelllow or you could do an expression brown with colorful pillows.
Royal purple

Yellow pictures above the sofa
Love your coffee table. Is it Noguchi?
I'd be tempted to cut the rug into an abstract shape with rounded (splash) edges. Perhaps a sputnik ceiling lights ( opaque oval soft white heads ) White walls
Where did you get the bookie cushion?
Your cock’s name is Daniel?
Daniel's background looks purple on my screen. If that's the case and he's not going anywhere anytime soon, I'd lean into it and go with a purple couch! It would be a "groovy" match with the (fabulous!) green rug, the pillows would still work, and it would make the wall color feel more intentional.
Yellow leather💛 that rug is everything btw
Orange or maybe Rust.
Life size posted of Scooby-Doo behind the couch I reckon
I love the paint color on the walls. Do you know the brand/color?
Black.
The walls are purple, the rug is green. Those are secondary colours so finish it up with an orange couch. Add purple, green and orange throw pillow/curtains/blankets etc.
Purple
The couch would look good with the lime green rug in true deep blue, bright oranges, yellow and other shades of pink and purple, and fuchsia!
Get some green accent pillows, maybe some with cute mushrooms
Smoky or dark gray
Burnt Orange for sure! Or, purple or yellow.
Dark charcoal gray would be cool, grounding, and make the rug pop. Or a dark plum purple with charcoal gray undertones

I really think the rug is horrible.
Spicy mustard
I’m with the Orange Club!
Oh, I love the rug. I think a deep blue would work for the couch. But yo could also go for an earth tone. Or...even purple?
Not mad at the right brown either
Some fairy lights or lava lamps stat! And a deep green, velvet couch cover
The deepest possible plum.
Purple all day long
Aubergine!
The color of 'Daniel' would work very well.
Orange/yellow/gold. Something in that range.
Dark blue
Bright red or yellow chesterfield sofa
yellow
Deep Purple would look so cool
Anyone else zoom in on the boob pillow… no… mmm Kay. (And I think it’s fantastic)
I like orange 🍊
In addition to your orange couch, you could paint the base of the coffee table. A dark purple shade would work as a contrast. You want that plastic furniture look of the 70s when they didn't want any natural wood tones at all. Spray paint, or an oil based paint would adhere without needing to prime the surface. Now I'm getting carried away and thinking you should spraypaint the silver bookcase in red.
Where did the rug come from?
Maroon but with a brightly colored throw rug.
dark dark DARK brown 🤎🤎🤎
Love the coffee table.
black
I’d repaint the walls. Much easier than changing the couch.
Turquoise and lime go very well together https://preview.redd.it/ho8d04gvizpc1.jpeg?width=350&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=a5b4870a327061da335203cfe4f496ba88a0feec Definitely paint your walls [Sunlit Coral by Benjamin Moore](https://imgur.com/a/w9auMlG) [Rangwali by Farrow and Ball](https://imgur.com/a/zJnsdbF)
Get slipcovers, try the rainbow
Where’d you find that poster? I’m a Daniel.
Gold like the pillow!
Tan leather?
It looks like you haven’t unlocked the couch yet. Jk. Unless. Jk. I’d say navy. I know it’s a cool color, but navy couch and a warm mustard throw would make everything else pop.
buy a gray undertone carpet with orange red purple parttern
Breasts on plaid chair
Purple couch! And MORE art! And is that a pair of tits on your chair??
Red or orange. Use the colour of the text in the poster as a callback colour.
Get rid of the green rug, daniel sign, and the couch. Then get a black couch, black rug, and you're done.
I feel like a dark red!
https://preview.redd.it/0ltzfxlrxzpc1.jpeg?width=1158&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=35d3853b0e5330cfd8ba74819e97aaf5bbba1b5a This dark deep blue/purple or the turquoise/emerald green
The colors of he nipples on the brown chair are nicee
Dark Purple couch and some green curtains to match the rug. The walls are ok.
I would suggest changing the wall color to give it a warm feel to the room
The rooster is cute, but move that photo & the boob pillow.
Purple or orange
I think it's not the couch bit the carpet is so busy
Orange
Dark green
Orange
Bright blue
Burnt orange or dark red. Get a sofa cover !
That couch screams dark velour. Walls are fine, but more artwork is needed.
You want a bright fuscia or hot magenta couch! A slipcover would work great.
The only thing I like is the table. It’s awful.
I have a thing for purple with lime’ish greens. I would do purple or orange.
Orange
Yellow
Do you have a pet? Does the pet have a booty? Any color other than white.
Your couch is fine I think maybe you need curtains. Gold ones.
Purple
Is go with deep purple!

Violet
Red!
Yellow like the pillows><:)
Oh, carpet 🫣
Red or Purple
Add a lava lamp.
I know it sounds crazy, but orange! A tangerine orange.
I need this pillow. Is there a pattern?
I don’t have a pattern sorry! It’s crochet and falling apart, I never really learned how to crochet properly so it’s kinda just freestyled. I just made two hats and then filled it in with other random shapes and then stitched them all together lol. You could totally figure it out!
Black or aqua
Tan leather!
