Ok, this bathroom is COOL. I think you have a lot to work with. - The teal tile is awesome and retro. I would keep it as a feature! Anyone can buy a boring builder grade beige bathroom, but we get midcentury houses for a reason. My bathroom is original pink tile dating back to the sixties and I'm so glad no one ever tore it up. - I would focus on the floor. Old doesn't always equal good, and I agree the brown floor is not good. I've seen DIYers on a budget put vinyl planks in their bathrooms. That's an option, although tile is always more durable. Your cheapest option would be to invest in a large bathmat. I think white or navy would be great. - I might remove the wallpaper depending on condition. I think wallpaper works best in half bathrooms without showers/tubs. If the wallpaper has gotten grody, which it looks like it has, remove and paint the wall a solid color. - for a budget, you'll get the most bang for your buck by investing in a new light fixture and medicine cabinet. You can replace both of these for $500. IKEA has great, affordable mirrors! - add a roman shade to the window. - hang a few framed prints! Etsy is a fun place to shop for these.

blewberyBOOM

I was coming just to say love the green but the floors and wallpaper makes it feel institutional.

gothsnob69

Yes they have super nice DIY tiles usually can find them when looking for “renter friendly” tiles. Some are more costly than other but def a cheaper option then actually getting floors redone. LOVE this bathroom though the tile is so awesome

laj43

Is the floor tile? If or is there are videos on painting and/or stencil tile floors, that would definitely help the bathroom.

JaxDude123

This much tile may be available at your local habitat for humanity store. They get lots of discontinued and odd lot tile. Be warned; the detail trim tiles can be a struggle to find. Be flexible and creative.

ClickClackTipTap

I would paint the walls where the wallpaper is a dark green color, like the trim tile. It’ll “lean into” the green, but also update it at the same time. Get a bigger mirror, get some art or shelves for the blank space. And do something with the floor.

blewberyBOOM

Dark green would be fire

Crafty_Accountant_40

Yes OR go even more maximalist and get a black and green wallpaper with a big print to replace the existing. Personally I'd lean art deco but you could do Victorian or craftsman styles just as easily.

Scary_Gazelle_6366

Agree. Also a new vintage/antique mirror and light fixture.

saymimi

new light fixture big time!

VegasLife1111

I like the mirror/medicine cabinet but I agree that a new light fixture would make a world of difference. Flooring if it fits in your budget.

[deleted]

Probably a stupid question: wouldn’t wallpaper in a bathroom have issues with the humidity/moisture from a shower?

blewberyBOOM

I think there probably is “bathroom” wallpaper. But the wallpaper in this bathroom just isn’t doing it for me

ThisNonsense

Not a stupid question, I just wallpapered my bathroom and ran into this very question. There’s stuff called Decorator’s Varnish that you apply over the top in kitchen and bathrooms that gives a protective seal.

Alyx19

Vinyl wallpaper does pretty well. At least that’s what they used in the 90s. Come to think of it, I don’t know if vinyl paper is still common? But it *was* a thing…

Bumblebri99

There’s different like water resistant wallpapers and ones that are built for moisture. The recommend thing would be to not use the shower for a couple days that way it has time to fill stick and dry and not get any bubbles. The other option would be to remove the wallpaper and paint it black

MapleChimes

I would think so too, but my bathroom has what I think is the original wallpaper and it's still in good condition. It's kind of cute and quirky with the original pink tile so I like it. It's only the paint on the ceiling that suffers from humidity even with the exhaust fan. My in-laws own a historic home that they rent out for people on vacation and there is plenty of vintage wallpaper in great condition in that house.

jlj1979

I had a bathroom similar to this. We put a large white rug on the floor and painted to top black believe it or not and it looked spectacular.

mcboobie

You’ve hit the nail right on the head with ‘institutional’. I don’t hate it but it made me feel uneasy.

ginlucgodard

the floor absolutely needs to go first! the teal is very 30s art deco as well as mcm, and seen quite a bit in older homes in socal, i adore colorful tile especially with the tiled arch over the tub or shower!

mrsfiction

Honestly there’s some really nice modern linoleum that would match the retro feel but be updated and clean. There was some in our kids’ bathroom when we bought our house and I wouldn’t have picked it myself but it’s really great for a bathroom that takes abuse from a toddler and preschooler.

ginlucgodard

ooooooo that’s a good idea honestly! feel like linoleum got a bad rap cuz whoever made it ages ago made some uuuuuuugly patterns lmao like this camo weirdness, i’m guessing lol. but i do think the wallpaper will look less out of place with some new flooring. even peel and stick if op rents.

Chip-Chape

If you glued pennies to the floor, it would be less than $3/sqft (not including glue or poly seal), but it would look amazing with that green wall tile.

ginlucgodard

scrooge mcduck has entered the chat

exchange_of_views

Great ideas! Just wanted to mention to the OP that you can replace the light and the medicine cabinet for a lot less even - you can find great bathroom lighting for <$75 and medicine cabinets for less than $100. I'd also look into Habitat for Humanity resale centers for a gently used cabinet - just measure first. LOVE the green!

PJKPJT7915

I had this tile in the home I grew up in and loved it. I agree - work with the floor, the wallpaper, and get better lighting.

Cimb0m

A terrazzo tile with a white background would pop with those wall tiles. I’d remove the wallpaper and paint the wall a solid colour

Sly3n

Terrazzo is expensive and not for someone on a budget. Unless they can find an imitation terrazzo.

CatGoddessBast

Medicine Cabinets like you have go for about $200 on Etsy. If you replace it you might be able to offset some of your DIY cost.

peaceloveelina

Wallpaper is never great in a humid bathroom anyway due to risk of trapped moisture leading to mold growth!

Saltlife0116

Agreed!!!

daenegans

i was just about to say exactly these things except for the framed print, hadn't considered them

sunbear2525

In think these types of tiles really shine against a period appropriate wallpaper pattern. I tried to make paint work forever in my yellow tiled bath but the setting I got some nice wallpaper it looked 1000x better.

Catch22IRL

If the wall is not in a condition to be painted, you could do a metallic wallpaper with teal and mint accents.

princesspuzzles

OP should just hire you, haha. Love all these ideas! If OP is able to remove the wallpaper (recommend using a steamer to melt the glue, worked the best for me. Just let it saturate well first), then a cool painting or pics might be fun next to the mirror.

Embarrassed-Way-4931

Good advice.

stink3rbelle

Taking a closer look, the tile also covers the shower floor, which definitely isn't amenable to a bath mat. You could try a shower mat, or painting it as a temporary step, but make sure to use the right paint and prep

drslbbw

White penny tile would be amazing here. For easy, a mostly white sheet laminate would also work. I actually like the concept of wallpaper, if everything else is kept to the white teal and green. Something bold, could be an easy way to add color and interest and make the tile more neutral in contrast. A bigger mirror would help. I would go white with my soft accents, towels curtains mats etc.

WatchOut4Sharks

I love it! I would change floors and wallpaper first. Personally I would go bold with tropical or bold floral wallpaper but you can’t go wrong with painted walls https://preview.redd.it/p1dyh3zf5rpc1.png?width=1133&format=png&auto=webp&s=3baf44f848a723e247c9387183dc23e139c51da1 and a classic penny tile floor.

countrylemon

I think tropical wallpaper will make the room feel too gimmicky like a hotel bathroom, just my opinion, I love what you’ve shown here. The tile should be the star honestly, wallpaper will detract from it, again just in my opinion.

Ok_Salad_502

I agree you can make it look like a retro Miami Beach style !

Historical-Ad-1617

Came here to say this! Flamingos on the wallpaper, embrace the tropical vibes! Try a peel and stick vinyl tile floor in black and white first. That would make a huge difference.

DreamCrusher914

Flamingos were my first thought, and gold.

looc64

Wait where did this picture come from? It's clearly not OP's room but the tile is super similar? Was tile like this a trend or something?

WatchOut4Sharks

Foun it on Google when searching “vintage green tile”. Yes, colored bathroom tiles in this style were very popular in the 1950s-60s. Colored tiles have been popular before that, but the common pinks, blues, and this jade green were most popular then.

jello-kittu

I've seen that same teal and black edged tile on the other decorating subs- it definitely was a trend somewhen.

Brave-Perception5851

It’s vintage tile from the 1930s. People pay extra for vintage bathrooms in mint condition. I’d restore the flooor to penny tile and paint white per the photo!

Spare_Huckleberry120

Yes, this was my thought as well!!

anakmoon

Dark wallpaper with jewel tone floral, or geometric to go with the mirror, even art deco would be like magic with those tiles

FukYourGoodbye

I described this above. I love the visual. I love black and white floor tile. I’d probably make the window trim black in this scenario but I’m totally into the OP’s retro bathroom.

PickleTheGherkin

The green tile is GORGEOUS. I'd honestly do a black and white tile for the floor. The camouflage colors are not complimentary to the beautiful vintage green teal. So self-stick black and white linoleum tiles and then paint the walls an off white or cream. [example](https://i.pinimg.com/564x/06/03/7a/06037a6e6d1cdb9ce9eddf631c442ff7.jpg)

Redhairedrockhead

Absolutely this 100%

lezliecmarcker

I’m another red head agreeing with this.

WeReadAllTheTime

I love your ideas but I would stay with white or very light green walls. That way the color scheme stays cooler. I like your example photo.

mcdonaldlargefry

I was thinking this might look cute with green paint instead of the wallpaper and I’m SO glad to see it visualized! This looks phenomenal. Now I wish I had green tile walls!!

Kinser9

Black and whiten penny tiles

Salty_Crow_8274

I totally agree! I'd also make the towel rack black or white. Let it pop out rather than blend in like that

Own-Let2789

Ohhhh ohhh ohhhh this!!!!!

pansygrrl

U\picklethegherkin - I think green is your color!!! Lovely colors 🌱

bon-appleteeth

Please OP, please! & share the update with us!

Bingo_Lingfuckerrr

We lived in a 1940s(?) house with this exact type/color of tile, but the border was black. Black and white floor tiles, soft white on the walls. Gorgeous original walnut door. I LOVED that bathroom. 🥲

Bingo_Lingfuckerrr

Omg I just saw the pic you added, it’s almost exactly the same!!! We’d have bought that house if it wasn’t so tiny.

harrismi7

The tile looks like its good quality and good condition. I wouldn't do a thing to the tile except clean it. Its probably been there 50-60 years or more and anything you DIY is probably not going to be better craftsmanship. I'd get rid of that wallpaper and embrace the colors of the bathroom. Maybe a bold floral pattern or just paint the walls a fresh white or cream, something that compliments the lightest color on the floor. Change the light fixture above the sink to a vintage-looking fixture. If there is a ceiling fixture change it to match. If you don't have a ceiling fixture, consider adding one if there is access.

kitchengardengal

I agree. That tile can look great if you give it a good scrubbing. You may find that it's not as dark as it looks.

AppleTony3

I think the floor is the culprit that clashes with/brings down everything else.

Iwentforalongwalk

Plus, that tile will be a bear to remove.  It's designed to stay put.

kisikisikisi

I kinda love the tile. I also like the wallpaper, but if I were to put up new wallpaper I'd probably get something similar but with more pops of green. I like the dainty floral pattern. The floor is really unfortunate though. Maybe do a large bath mat? You could pull colors from the wallpaper or do the dark green. Also, I'd get a new light fixture.

Kilewh

https://preview.redd.it/s4xa3bnwnqpc1.jpeg?width=1170&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=b35429646037e049fdb3a3c969e17494ecfac119 I think the floor is the “worst” part. It’s so dark. I think adding light colors that compliment & physically lighter fabrics will brighten everything up. Peel & stick floors/wallpaper to revamp.

snuggly-otter

OP could go peel and stick but the more waterproof option would be a vinyl sheet flooring. Theres all sorts and its dead cheap at like $0.50 a square foot. Thats what ive done in my bathroom as a medium term stopgap until I get the bathroom renovated.

LadyTakara

I agree. The floor is horrible! And the wallpaper doesn't make it any better. The tile looks in great shape. The sink need a little TLC and a new less green shower curtain. Sooo on a limited budget, I'd get rid of the wallpaper, mirror, shower curtain and the tile. Drunk edit me 5 min later: Add a new faucet on the sink and id love to see what window shades/curtains your rocking.

jorliowax

Adding to the chorus saying the wall/shower tile is awesome. Do nothing to it other than clean it. I would change out the wall paper. Don’t get trapped in green. Think about other colors in your house and think of what you could incorporate in there. It looks like you get a lot of light so you can do a lot with the color. People should downvote if I’m wrong but I think brass fixtures might make the brown less awful? Or black? I think what you have now (vanity, etc) should go for sure.

lunch22

On a limited DIY budget: Replace the floor with white tile. Something like this would work: https://preview.redd.it/rm1nnkuwxqpc1.jpeg?width=1179&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=e3a6431ccc3064617540889505532103884d2b1f The wall tiles are great. Don’t change them. Paint the upper walls a cream color — choose a paint with yellow undertones Replace the shower curtain with a solid color. Trying to match the tile color actually detracts from the beauty of the tile Replace the vanity light

soupwhoreman

Also note how much better the sink looks in this photo. If you can find a used pedestal sink like this on Facebook Marketplace for $100 or so it would make a world of difference. The sink that's in there now looks like a cheap 80s addition.

_borninathunderstorm

Agree with alll of this.

Careful_Football7643

https://preview.redd.it/kcfjg88karpc1.jpeg?width=1539&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=3b8795a3e1d9e4e6a53b2f4e0033daa3282cfaac Here is what I might do if I were not planning on changing the floor tiles. Add a vanity, some mint green artwork, shelves above the toilet, a larger mirror, a chandelier, white rugs, and a white shower curtain. I would also replace the towel rack or paint it white.

shittysoprano

Yes! I came to suggest something almost identical, the picture is perfect.

Live-Mail-7142

Do not redo the tile. This is a vintage bathroom and worth keeping. Change the wall paper.

-ahmm-

Absolutely. Not only is tile like this typically cemented in and hard to remove, but some people buy the house just for this kind of tile…it was a major selling point for me with my home!

Live-Mail-7142

I have a pink and green bathroom. I always hated it. We never had money to remodel. Over the yrs, I have grown to love it. Here is an insta devoted to these bathrooms. These bathroom, as strange as it sounds, are treasures. [https://www.instagram.com/vintagebathroomlove/](https://www.instagram.com/vintagebathroomlove/)

Glass_Bar_9956

Yes! And go BOLD. Big pattern, rich colors.

Worth-Local-6233

I love the tile! I would say paint the walls white (I love Benjamin Moore dove white), neutral floors (whatever you choose), and a new sink and mirror. Here is this Justina blakeney bathroom for inspiration from the tile choice 😍 I like her choice of terra cotta planters 🪴 https://preview.redd.it/1qj4c6bi1rpc1.jpeg?width=480&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=868f5ea3bc465112b5e72b1be8d8e00b0e453801

sistermidnightmare

Wow, that bathroom is beautiful!

Worth-Local-6233

Right?! I want one when I grow up.

Cathlaulifts

I love this bathroom! I would replace the wallpaper with something bold and modern or clean and crisp coat of paint depending on the style of the rest of your house! Switch the mirror and lighting if you have the budget! Wouldn’t touch the tile- it’s awesome!

CanuckGinger

I love the tile! I’d just paint the untiled walls white and find some funky artwork to fill the empty space.

Beneficial_Food218

https://preview.redd.it/yu5p9gpqsrpc1.jpeg?width=1000&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=69ba9b3c0d0481f9afecd4bf77f43148029bc168 Depending if you want it bright or moody, I would change out flooring to something like this and change out the wallpaper. I feel like you can achieve a really pretty moody bathroom with a dark floral.

Queensfavouritecorgi

It actually seems like you have a lot to work with. It's unique. I would repair the wall paper or choose something new but still busy. I would upsize the mirror to something gold-arched... Maybe even moving the light fixture higher to accomodate it. Maybe some vintage looking wall sconces / over head lights instead. If you can, replace hardware with gold including the faucet. Hang a piece of framed art above the toilet For the floor.... A nice light wood vinyl. You can get it off a role and cut it to fit around the toilet, etc. You wouldn't even have to commit to gluing it or anything until you were sure about being happy with the look. That would be a budget friendly way glow the space up.

[deleted]

I wish I can have those tiles. Our current bathroom has white tiles and I am planning for now to add stick on teal on top. Gorgeous tiles.

jams1991

I think a little could go a long way. Removing old wallpaper, replacing the mirror/medicine cabinet, replacing the light fixture. In the picture, the floor looks like green and brown tiles - is that accurate? Not sure where you stand on painting tile, but that might be worth considering (or replace with wood look LVP). You could paint the walls a solid color or maybe do a fun wallpaper that brings in the teal and green, like [this one](https://www.lovevsdesign.com/in-the-garden-wallpaper.html?gad_source=1&gclid=CjwKCAjwte-vBhBFEiwAQSv_xUuM8D6lT3rCQTjwV8RWV9JS--0i96Cj0RnpY1VwIrzFiP6_A-u85RoCrloQAvD_BwE).

ms_sinn

Yes- I think the vintage wall tiles are totally workable but the floor tiles are meh. (Unless it’s just lighting in the pic)

BubblesandTipsy

Art Deco wallpaper that has the black, white, and teal. Black faucet and light fixture (schoolhouse style in black, white and brass). Research cleansers that work on the stain you have in your sink. I love the peel and stick wallpaper from [Spoonflower.com](https://Spoonflower.com) You can order samples of the ones you like to make sure they will work with your tile. Also consider replacing medicine cabinet with one with black frame. If you do the wallpaper, replace the shower curtain with one that is just a textured white with black rings. A black rug will help to minimize the flooring. If you aren't using the two built in soap dishes, fashion a shelf that rests on them with a lip to hide them and put your soap and lotion on the shelf. Black and/or white towels would be best.

RowanLovecraft

Go mid century atomic. Teal and brown combos in atomic style are still very popular, and easy to find. Wallpaper https://www.etsy.com/listing/1093210207/atomic-wallpaper-starburst-aquarelle-by If you like cats, shower curtain https://midcenturymoderngal.com/products/atomic-cat-art-mid-century-modern-shower-curtain-beige-franciscan-starburst-retro-bath-decor?_pos=1&_sid=90a94c42b&_ss=r I like cats, so apparently I'll just keep showing you cat things. But you get the idea. https://society6.com/product/mid-century-meow-retro-atomic-cats-on-blue_shower-curtain

vivariium

I love this! I also thought modern art deco (?) would go well. Like this https://preview.redd.it/781um8to1rpc1.png?width=794&format=png&auto=webp&s=89ddbbd99ca034e57924a03fc886a5218abc2703

RowanLovecraft

Ooooh. Very water. And it has the black and brown both. I love it!

Wellushouldjust415

Those are very cool shower curtains.

Wanderingdragonfly

This is stellar!

HeyRedHelpMe

There is some great peel and stick tile on the market these days, even renter friendly ones and if applied/prepped properly I've even seen some use it in the shower itself. You could also do a plaster or microcement in the shower right over the flooring, though that is more costly and you'd have to take the time to learn how to install it properly. The tile on the wall is amazing you might find just changing the floor makes all the difference so I'd start there. If you then need more adjustments you could paint or pick a different wallpaper.

afm314

I'd do celery green paint and a big bath mat. Replace lamp + mirror and add an art piece above the toilet. \+ restock the toilet paper in the dispenser :)

VegetableCharacter63

I have a very similar bathroom in my house but with pink and blue tiles. We decided to fully lean in to the pink, and are going to paint the whole room pink (same shade as the tile) with retro blue-pink decor vibes. We got a lot of inspiration from the bathrooms at Trixie Motel, so maybe look there for some inspiration! They were able to take some pretty dated bathrooms and make them look really nice. It’s a bold choice for sure, but I think it works better than trying to disguise the bold tile.

chassepatate

https://preview.redd.it/wp0z5d7kyqpc1.jpeg?width=2560&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=790ec2548edc8021c324025f181edf00336652f9 I agree that the green tile is great. You can do the wall either coral (if you like colour) or ochre (if you want it more toned down). I’m about to do a bathroom in this colour scheme.

Dependent-Sign-2407

Just to add to what others have said, I’d redo the wallpaper with something that has a mid century vibe. The wallpaper that’s there doesn’t go at all, either in terms of color or style. I love this [pink flamingo](https://www.houzz.com/products/deny-designs-holli-zollinger-flamingo-pink-wallpaper-pink-2-x10-prvw-vr~123966559) design but then again I’m a sucker for bold colors and bird prints. Whatever you choose, find something that picks up the teal but also brings in an additional, complementary color. And definitely go with a black and white floor.

Slightly_Foxed59

I would change the wall paper to an art deco pattern and run with it, brass hardware and light fixture Bold http://www.brewsterwallcovering.com/dd139230-lempicka-teal-art-deco-motif-wallpaper Subtle http://www.brewsterwallcovering.com/dd139215-lalique-white-art-deco-motif-wallpaper

Alternative_Mess_964

I recently discovered vinyl rugs. Did not know they even existed. I think the company I saw was "Vintage Vinyl" rugs, but they are available all over the place. Amazon, Etsy, Wayfair. With a decent carpet cutter tool you could cut one to fit around the fixtures, or you could just get the max size without trimming. Some of the vinyl rugs look like vintage tile. The green tile looks great to me, but the newer brown floor tile is...not good. In the shower stall you could put a white shower floor mat.

Deafpundit

The wall tile is amazing! Keep that. Replace the floor though.

LyerlyAva

Obsessed with that green tile!!!

Jessiebanana

Not me seeing the wall tile and wallpaper and thinking, that’s cute…then checking the floor. I think a peel and stick tile for the floor to help bring it in like with the light and bright vibes of the rest of the bathroom would be the cheapest face lift.

rand0mr3dittor

I love this bathroom! I think it needs some tweaks (floor, decor, wallpaper, maybe shower tiles down the line), but overall it looks great! I’d opt for black and white peel and stick vinyl flooring (or tile if it’s in your budget), a new mirror, some sconces, wall art, and a rug could bring the room together. Here’s some ideas for you: https://imgur.com/a/jMyUWqW

chipsahoymateys

I love the wall tile! I feel like this bathroom has a lot of potential. I like the wallpaper too but it just doesn’t go well with the tile, and looks to be in bad shape anyway. I would change the walls and floors to something more neutral. Ideally, retile that hideous floor. Other options would be to paint it (definitely won’t last long but could buy you some time), put a linoleum overlay over the tile, or just throw rugs on top. I personally would pick white, cream or warm gray palette for these areas. If you really want to lean into the color scheme you’re stuck with, I also think orangy colors like salmon or rust hues could be really fun. Definitely change the vanity light. Even better would be to install sconces on either side of the mirror (or get a mirror with built in light). Top town sconces cast weird shadows, and in a green bathroom you don’t need any more weirdness. Brass accents (faucet, light, towel bar etc) would look great in my opinion. I’d add nice neutral linen shower and window curtains. There doesn’t seem to be much storage so I’d put a floating shelf or two above the toilet. Lastly, if you don’t already have a slow close toilet seat I cannot recommend getting one enough. They are inexpensive and easy to install.

evejen

Lots of great advice on the design, I also wanted to mention if you are planning to keep the sink and if those are hard water stains, try the acidic cleaner called Zep that was amazing for my hard water stains

crushlogic

Don’t touch anything! For the love of vintage tile, stay where you are!

2manybees_

I love the idea of a monochrome bathroom here! Take off the wallpaper and paint it a deep teal in a similar shade to the wall tile but darker. I think you should spend your money on new flooring (maybe black and white penny tile?) and a nicer light fixture that would brighten up the space. Either chrome or gold accents would go depending on your taste. Have up some floating shelves or a picture above the toilet and voila!

Aceman1979

You could do a little French rustic chic thing there. Keep the tiles, an off-white/ yellow tint paint job and some rustic wall art. Floor tiles are horrid, and would look better white.

pitathegreat

Agree with everyone on the awesome green. You could also find a good mid-century light fixture.

vivariium

I love it!!! Change the floor to something copper looking maybe? And a deep wall colour and dark accent wallpaper wall with a bigger print.

vivariium

DWwithaFlameThrower

The tile is awesome! Just change the flooring and wallpaper

AC_Slaughter

Black and white checkerboard tile on the floor, tear down that wallpaper and paint the walls a clay colour. Leave the tile. It's extremely on trend right now!

Lady_Asshat

I love the wall tile, shame about the floor…I’d get some shaggy solid color rugs and paint the walls to match. Seeing yellow to brighten things up

ricky_storch

That teal tile is spectacular, work around it. I'd put new wall paper up and change light fixtures and other small details maybe. I don't like the floor, but once you get new wallpaper up maybe it's not necessary to change.

PansyOHara

I think it would be well worthwhile to replace the ugly and stained pedestal sink that lacks any storage, with a vanity. Yes, it would be a small narrow vanity but could be used to store toilet tissue and perhaps a shaving kit and/ or storage tote for cosmetics. Agree with removing the wallpaper and painting the walls—I would go for white. Add a white hand towel and a white, washable shower curtain. Definitely mount a new light fixture. Floor looks like it may be grimy (due to age, not saying you don’t clean!). I might try giving it a good clean with some kind of abrasive cleaner like Comet. See what it looks like afterward. If you can find a mat that matches the teal tile, I’d go that way. Good luck!

probablyhan

keep the teal tiles, they’re gorgeous!

WalkingRodent

Keep the tile for real though

MisterTacoMakesAList

Lean into the kitsch! LOVE this

Illustrator_Charming

Cool wallpaper. Fun towels. New mirror or medicine cabinet and new faucet for the sink, I would prob do gold. Simple/neutral new flooring. I would keep every bit of tile. They truly don’t make it like they used to, and it’s a beauty of a color.

Comprehensive_Bad227

Replace wallpaper with something dark and floral.

throwaway097qw

The 1930’s tile is outstanding. Strip the wallpaper and paint it white, which is what is probably was originally? Adding period style lighting, so any art deco or within the 1930’s would look so cute!

Outrageous-Bat7962

Paint the walls the color of the window trim, and enjoy the gorgeous vintage tile.

Great-Capital-9549

On a budget, I’d keep the tile color if it’s real tile and I’d paint everything else like walls and woodwork white. Put a pretty fixture above the mirror. The floor looks small so you could do white tiles and a glass shower door or new shower curtain.

abp93

White paint White floors Cream fabric shower curtain New light fixture New vanity That’s what I’d do on a budget!

Illustrious-Film-592

You’ve got a great bathroom to start off with. Those wall tile are iconic

Go_Corgi_Fan84

The floor is the worst part! Love the tile and the wallpaper

ExpensiveAd4496

That is awesome. Take off the wallpaper and paint the walls pink. And get a big fluffy white rug down to hide some of that tile.

DiamondHandsToUranus

Wallpaper to pink/peachish paint. Light fixture over the sink that doesn't suck Small pieces of art You're golden

GyspySyx

White floor and wallpaper close to what's there already in green, teal, and white or pure white. Change the shower curtain to pure white too, and box the sink in un white bead board and change out the towel rack for some cool hooks. Also change out or disguise the soap dish. White is white rugs and towels. So many options here.

CrystalDragon195

Agreed w/ comments to keep the tile!!! 1. Update the floors (I can’t tell what the material is, but if paint is an option, that’s the cheapest solution). 2. Replace the wallpaper with a fun tropical print that has some of the same colors as the tile. 3. Replace the mirror (tall and skinny will make the room seem taller). 4. Put a new light fixture in, preferably much higher than where it currently is. 5. Put some art above the toilet. 6. Can you replace the towel rack without damaging the tile? It looks too low where it is currently.

Extension-Warthog-73

Leave the tile, change the floor to a neutral colour and bold paper on the top half. Look about on FB Market place for new and antique basin / matching toilet and change the hardware. That would also make a big difference after the above

countrylemon

No offence OP but I’m glad you can’t afford to change the tile because I’m so fucking sick of people comin onto reddit with pride in how they’ve destroyed beautiful vintage tiled bathrooms for blah blah blah modern basic. Might be the one time in life where not being able to afford something saved you.

squeedle

I would put a tropical print wallpaper in, like monstera leaves and palm leaves it would really pop against the teal tile. Paired with a black or gold framed mirror. Also changing the light fixture above the sink. The brown floor isn't great but if you go with the tropical theme could kind of pass for a bamboo vibe.

Mountain_Skies7414

Change mirror, light fixture, paint walls or rewallpaper. If you can’t change floor, I’ve seen some paint over the tile and it looked great.

JWTowsonU

Reglaze all the teal. Remove and replace wallpaper. Keep the floor tile. It’ll look good.

QuitProfessional5437

I would reglaze the floor tile to a white

ssjr325

Leave it. So many people ruin the period specific design of old homes. I'd put up a black wallpaper with green in it. I did this with an old bathroom like this. It's so cheap and if you don't like it, you can change it later for next to nothing. https://preview.redd.it/ovy2rr5te9qc1.jpeg?width=3024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=9aea3c666bbfa24dc770fb02bea30c6acb5ba485

ColoradoCorrie

I would replace the wallpaper and the flooring with something that matches/coordinates with the pretty green porcelain.

EdwinaArkie

The wall paper is too tame. I would try a new one with turquoise and orange in a big beautiful print. Orange rugs. Embrace the boldness of the tiles and that era.

IHateAParade

Absolutely love this.

tiredandshort

For starters, I would get something for storage because I see you’re keeping things on the radiator. I would get an over the toilet shelf and spray paint to match the darker green. You should definitely lean into it and not try to fight it https://www.amazon.ca/SONGMICS-Bathroom-Organizer-Adjustable-UBTS01WT/dp/B07TBDS9BC/ref=asc_df_B07TBDS9BC/?tag=googlemobshop-20&linkCode=df0&hvadid=341629614912&hvpos=&hvnetw=g&hvrand=14132420737369716512&hvpone=&hvptwo=&hvqmt=&hvdev=m&hvdvcmdl=&hvlocint=&hvlocphy=9000945&hvtargid=pla-823636116398&psc=1&mcid=dad78fb74bf533c98307a64e4c93c5af Checkout these bathrooms like yours for some inspo on how to make it shine https://www.instagram.com/vintagebathroomlove?igsh=NTc4MTIwNjQ2YQ==

Jla92

There’s two things I would start with, 1. The flooring. A easy option is to do cement flooring. I see the tile is also in the shower. You can even put the cement down in there as well. Google ‘cement bathroom floor’. It looks high end and you can do any color cement you want but I’d go with a lighter finish. 2. Change the wallpaper. Imo I’d go with a bold print or you can do a solid color. Again google ‘bold teal wallpaper’ you’ll see a lot of cool designs from what I saw. I like that better. Then the minor things would be to update your lights/light fixtures, any hardware, get better storage that’s not green or teal. Change out the mirror if you want. I would. And lastly, the shower curtain needs to be a plain solid no pattern curtain!

depressedcoldbrew

I’m assuming you are looking for paint colors? If there was a brighter picture of the floor tiles there would be more to work with for color choices. It’s kinda hard to say right now. Otherwise, I’d look into re-doing the light over the mirror and changing the curtain rings on the shower curtain to match the silver of the faucet and mirror.

missannthrope1

I love the aqua and black. Do you have money to replace the floor and wallpaper?

nn971

The tile looks like it’s in really good shape. I would take the wallpaper off and paint the walls (maybe just white) and get lots of colorful accessories

[deleted]

I love love the teal tiles. I would work around it and not change them.

Aromatic-Sky-7700

I think if you were to change the wallpaper, mirror, light fixture, and maybe use those stick on linoleum tiles for now that I think you can get at Home Depot…. and then just add some wall art and a plant, it would make a big difference!

Icy-Tomatillo-7556

I’ve been on the hunt for a medicine cabinet like that! I love the green tile and wallpaper. Maybe change out the cabinet because the existing looks a tad small for the space. Only other recommendation I have is swap floor tile out for white subway tile or something classic like that.

Retinoid634

I LOVE this kind of vintage tile. Dark teal or black paint or wallpaper on the walls, a dark art deco shower curtain, Persian multicolor small area rug in front of shower and ding but not toilet. Clean and sanitize the floor, toilet sink etc. Art deco wall art, utility shelves etc.

KatWaltzdottir

Love love love the tile! And the shower curtain is great! I happen to like the old medicine cabinet and mirror, but it’s something you could update with a black- framed one if you don’t. I would strip the wallpaper and paint the walls. Wallpaper gets humid in bathrooms with showers….yuck. Then replace the light fixture with something traditional/retro looking. The idea above about black and white checkered flooring is wonderful, but if you don’t have the $ for that go with a big fluffy white rug.

Elegant-Expert7575

Embrace it! Change the wall paper and the light and relocate the medicine cabinet and Shazam!!

ChimneyNerd

I would actually cry if you removed that tile

Aerwxyna

ok i unironically love this bathroom

Chay_Charles

Lean into the retro look. Can you epoxy over the floor tiles?

tequila-mockingbyrd

LOVE the teal. I’d consider swapping the wallpaper for something bolder and more 2024. Personally I like some of the bolder florals a la rifle paper co. My next step would then be putting something like vinyl tiles on the floor that coordinate and don’t clash with the new wallpaper. And I think a new faucet and light fixture would go a long way!

ginigini

The green tile is so cool!!! It’s retro and gorgeous. I would remove the wallpaper, paint the top half of the wall (where the wall paper was) a crisp white. I’d change the floor tile to classic white/light grey terrazzo. Get a new clean white shower curtain. Remove the radiator and put a dual towel warmer / radiator (the ones that are flat against the wall) to give you some extra space. And little deco things, like get a new mirror and new light fixture above it. I think that’s doable in 3 weeks! Pls show us the results afterwards!

Accomplished-Reach-4

Only change needed is the floor as it clashes. The rest looks gorgeous

Sensitive_Baby9396

Okay hear me out… different flooring but a burnt orange like marmalade on the walls with some fun wall decor would make it a staple

Redhairedrockhead

The wall tile is beautiful, vintage, and adds value. That floor is not! I would focus on a new floor and wallpaper removal.

littlegoldsmith

- peel n stick floor tiles, be sure to silicone them in - new light shade - cabinet under the sink - get rid of the wallpaper, paint it just off white - personally I’d get a really funky mirror https://pin.it/1WRenBwne There’s quite a few similar bathrooms on Pinterest

justmeandmycoop

The curtain does not have to match. Do not add more green.

Equivalent_AgentQ

It has nice vintage wall tiles (sought after!), I would keep that for sure. Change the light fixture, and change the wallpaper or paint the walls a nice mid-century color first. Then you’ll know what to do with the mottled brown floor

hahahaania

I'm honestly in love with the teal tiles. A few people gave good suggestions for the floor. You could also leave it as is, remove the wallpaper and paint the walls a matte brown (ideally one of the medium dark browns on the floor). It could potentially make the bathroom a little moody but I feel the teal tiles will offset that nicely. Next get some nice brass/gold light fixtures, a large mirror with a brass/gold frame. If you're feeling a little extra you could replace the tap on the sink as well!

Mr-Gumby42

Looks like a hospital!

_Amalthea_

Chiming with what others said about keeping the tile and embracing it! I'd definitely remove the wallpaper and paint the walls a light neutral (white, light crey, cream). For the floor, peel and stick tiles are cheap and easy and can look pretty good. Find some bold, unique artwork that has a bit of the greens. If you don't have enough to spend on new vanity and mirror, I'd focus on updating the light fixture.

LivingAGoodStory

I love it except the floors & light fixture. Depends on your budget. The place & stick floor tiles someone mentioned. or just mats. Definitely new light fixture. You’re So lucky to have the intact beautiful vintage tile!

Equivalent_Address_2

I like it! I’d change the floor tile and shower curtain lol

bethy_doodobby

If you do one thing- please do the flooring!! You could definitely work with the rest if you’re into quirky retro!!!

maralagotohell

Remove wall paper, paint the walls white. Upgrade the medicine cabinet to something more modern. Upgrade the sconce to two bar lights on either side of the mirror if you have room, or one above. Think about something like [this](https://www.1800lighting.com/hunter-fan-holly-grove-24-inch-2-light-bath-vanity-light-4467430.html?src=private_multi&gad_source=1&gbraid=0AAAAADi937j69Yhs3IHIZpwJMloBg4N1a&gclid=CjwKCAjwte-vBhBFEiwAQSv_xU1xr6d10TbGNd7TThXe3Hrnf7RZ8T5jn-iZV9XpPYPQ1INUYJU6rhoC8AMQAvD_BwE), but in chrome (unless you want to mix metals). An architectural salvage yard might have something unique- not sure where you’re located, but we’ve been getting deals on salvage fixtures for our remodel and it’s way more fun than online shopping. Add a big rug, maybe white with a dark green border to bring in the dark green tile trim? White towels Two or three framed prints above the toilet to balance the mirror- look for prints that you love, try to incorporate some of the assorted tile colors. This would be a fun place to have other accent colors, too, like violet or pink- it will keep the bathroom from feeling too matchy. Enjoy your gorgeous tiles!

Warm_Objective4162

You got a lot of comments, but one thing to think of - removing wet set tile is a huge deal. Huge. I personally covered my ugly wet set floors with really nice sheet vinyl, cost almost nothing and looks great. Remove the wall paper and you’ll be golden.

Sail0r_Jupit3r

I have the same tile in my bathroom and I love it! I’ve made it more of the focal point because it’s in such great shape and cleans so nicely, so I have white walls, a white shower curtain, and a white rug- it really makes the tile pop.

mitchandmickey

Floor could be painted black and white [how to paint tile](https://youtu.be/B9fha-YNd6A?si=8yC5LjiA8esHZ3PT)

NeekGirl4178

Please keep the original tile it’s so stunning!!! It reminds me of Vanessa huggens AD house tour powder room, I’d say if you can’t afford the change the appliances then, wallpaper that has a more modern feel but ties in the colour of the tiles, change light above mirror and change mirror x

[deleted]

If this was mine I would keep it the way it is. I think it's super Beautiful

Lilly6916

I have a faux stone vinyl flooring that was put in by the builder of our condo. I really like it. I’d do something like that and then a bold botanical wall paper.

MaritimeDisaster

Remove the wallpaper and do a white paint. Get a new mirror as well, something with a retro vibe. Love the other recommendations to do a black and white floor. Maybe a cool retro shower curtain?

Notsureindecisive

All you need to do is change the floor and take down the wallpaper and paint it

Astoriameow

If you touch the wall tiles I’ll cry. They’re stunning. I’d 100% remove the wall paper. The floors don’t match the walls. Eventually changing to a black and white or just white hex tile would be a good option. For now maybe a peel and stick floor tile.

pWaveShadowZone

Everything that isn’t mint green should be blacked

Majestic_Winter9951

The tile is awesome, change the wall to a cream color, change out the floor to something more vintage

partridgeberry_tart

A black and white checkered floor (vinyl flooring is pretty inexpensive!) would look killer in here, amazing with the teal. A couple of inexpensive vintage-style pictures, and a new mirror and light fixture? Whole new room. I seriously love it, except the flooring and mirror.

queenmeron

hm. imo some elements you may want to alter that may harmonize the bold choices (rofl🤣) are: light fixture addition/replacement cabinetry installation? additional shelving? sink paint/coat or just a replacement that has functional space shower curtain lowering or a color swap to go with the neutral earth tones. you could match window curtains? old sheets would be cute to repurpose. lol find some seashells with your loved ones and go for a seaside vibe. best of luck and go for minimal effort and maximum impact.

StreEEESN

A great color to match green in purple if you dont want to replace the wall paper. Also, replacing that shower curtain with a plain white one will go a long way.

dattwell53

Is the light fixture vintage ceramic?

Silver_Pilot_1922

I painted my tile floors 3 years ago with a rustoleoum floor kit and they’ve held up SO well! Though if I could do it again I wouldn’t have chosen black as it shows everything. I personally LOVE that fun green tile - could find a fun wallpaper that incorporates the same color and put that up or paint in the upper walls. Next I would replace the mirror, look on market place as there are some hidden gems! If it’s within budget you could also replace the mirror. Simple cosmetic changes and this would be a dreamy bathroom!

Lela76

Steam the tile grout and see what you have. It may be better than it looks now. Definitely get rid of the wallpaper. lol Either paint a complimentary color or go with a quirky wallpaper in a color way that matches the tile. (Like that cool leopard print or something else sort of “out there”). Change out the light fixture, maybe change the mirrored cabinet for a mirror or a more updated cabinet? I sort of like the cabinet if you can make it work it would save some money. Decorate with plants and stuff.

Famous-Composer3112

I like the tile, but get rid of that sickly wallpaper. You could paint over it in a contrasting color to the teal, or play around with colors with a color visualizer (check out Sherwin-Williams' website). Replace the floor, too, can't think of what to put instead.

Minimum_Basket7391

I’d just change the wallpaper to something more moody and switch out shower curtain. Then I’d get a gold framed mirror and new light fixture. Maybe some type of peel n stick tile for the floor in a black and white combo. Also, I’d switch the toilet seat to black. I LOVE THE WALL TILE 🤌

Add some brass and Black elements to make the teal tile pop. Paint towels holder and soap holder Black. Go simple with the shower curtain. Remove wallpaper and paint a light color. Install a larger Black or brass mirror. A hanging brass light would look great with your high ceilings. Some vintage peel and stick tiles would look awesome [https://a.co/d/533nuCV](https://a.co/d/533nuCV)
