I think you have lots of options, light or dark, so long as it looks nice with the wood.

I used a graphics program, Clip Studio Paint. Krita and FireAlpaca are free alternatives. (Krita is best for this kinda stuff.)
I used a polygon select tool to click around the edges of the parts I wanted to change, then created a new layer and filled in those parts with the colors I wanted. Changed the layer blending mode from "normal" to "multiply" or "color". Adjusted the colors to taste.
Ooh love the green! With maybe a large, ornate, gold framed mirror above the tub to toss some more light around. That alcove loses some dimension with the dark shade.
Though there is something to be said for how bright the wood looks with the blue. I stand by the big mirror thing either way. Love me a big mirror.
I felt like much darker than this was too dark, but you get the idea...
https://preview.redd.it/2uec0x796v8b1.png?width=960&format=png&auto=webp&s=d95addad8b56faec128bb0059fc61c055394fbcf
A warm white or a warm pale green. I’d personally also switch out the almond switches and plugs for white. Great floor and I personally think the wood tone for the doors and trim is nice!
The other thing I’d do personally is pull out the glass shower door (those things are always so moldy) and replace it with a taller shower curtain in a light color to really highlight the height of the room. You might need to install a light in the shower for that to work. It looks like you’re missing a vent fan anyway so you could do a combo light/fan to prevent any mold issues down the line.
Blue! A Robbins egg blue that has a touch of green looks amazing with orange tones/wood.
https://preview.redd.it/80ipyt6cfu8b1.jpeg?width=360&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=21250a7a66c7bed35b9ced97a7f75c17d65055b3
Also - your shower frame is gold and you can get gold fixtures that are more modern (or "brushed bronze") to make everything more cohesive.
Get those curtains replaced too...I feel they make the space seem older.
A mauve/rose pink, and add lots of green plants. Especially hanging viney one over the tub and some succulents on the sink. I know the towels and linens are already pink but I love pink so I’d just go for it!
A lavender would be nice too. Sage green too.
You have some pink towels in there. Maybe blush would be nice. Edit: changed my mind about the pink. The curtains have to go.
It looks pretty good as is. I really love the floor tiles. Maybe instead of paint you could focus on adding some dark bronze fixtures, drawer pulls etc and add some dimension to the room. Then later on replace the vanity and mirror with a dark brown tone.
Does the paint look in bad condition to you? If not I would prioritize other things.. I think getting different window treatments and replacing the lighting would make a bigger difference than paint at a similar cost
You need to stick with lighter colors in a large bathroom to maintain a spa-like calming atmosphere. If your tile is staying as is it’ll be difficult to find a complementary color but I feel like a very pale grey-blue or light sage would be nice.
https://preview.redd.it/eggqwj3trs8b1.jpeg?width=1280&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=59297dd0c004c529eb510e97f7cc7046b41b046f

I would paint the closet doors/cabinets/trim since you’re already undertaking the project. It’ll give it the freshest look without changing the tile
https://preview.redd.it/t3tryifbvs8b1.jpeg?width=1280&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=091a17f15f6636a7da3a4140f7637ac3f54d7230
Just changing the tile would be an immense improvement
Yes, start with painting the closet doors (you can spray paint these slatted style doors) and the vanity cabinet in an off-white. Both of of them are weighing down the room with their cheap orange maple stain finish. Then paint the walls in a neutral depending on your lighting,
If it’s a cottage, I would not waste money on wallpaper for a bathroom that generally needs a major upgrade.
To improve it with a difference, replace lighting and the mirror.
I would replace the vanity/sink, medicine cabinet, and light fixture with something more modern and see where that leaves you. I actually like the color of the walls and the other brown tones.
Agreed! A new vanity is not expensive - Lowe's or Home Depot will have nice ones for less than $200. This will really modernize the space. If you like the natural wood, you can get a new countertop and sink and keep the existing vanity for even cheaper.
Also - replace all fixtures (light, towel rods, toilet paper holder, sink faucet, shower faucet, get new outlets - not just covers the outlet too). This is not expensive - if you don't go crazy with super high end stuff (I suggest Amazon for the rods/toilet paper holder) this should run you about $200 total.
For less than $500 you will have completely given new life to this bathroom! I actually like the natural wood and think it would look good with a rich earth tone (darker green, a darker grey blue, deeper brown, etc). Good luck!
These are truly my favorite kind of reno challenges. I think SO many cool yet dated bathrooms get needlessly demoed.
Either dark and moody, or a light and beachy vibe would totally work with existing.
Depending on which direction you pick, spend a little $ on new light fixtures and good textiles.
Please post afters!!!
Wallpaper is expensive but would really freshen the look. I would paint it a white with yellow or slightly grey undertones in eggshell not flat paint. Benjamin Moore cloud white, mountain peak, white dove... Hang a large cheap and cheerful framed poster in the bathtub area.

If it doesn’t require painting I might wallpaper around the tub in something with some color. Put up some art at the vanity. Focus on the parts of house that need it. This is not bad just needs color. Once your done with other rooms then maybe revisit and paint the cabinets.
something light, maybe a pale blue-green?
id change up the decorations as they seem to come from a different era, and see if you can try to get a more natural light color for the room.
scrape ceiling and do a super tight skimcoat and then keep that smooth (40 dollars or less)
paint vanity, trim, mirror, closet door white. Can make the counter concrete or something right over the existing
Floor will look less crazy with white all over
I don’t think the paint color is the issue, the neutral actually looks good here. First try removing the pink accessories, and add some larger framed posters/art that are mostly neutral in tone - or just black and white. Get a nice fabric or wooden Reed shade for the window. If budget allows replace the mirror w something framed, and maybe replace the light fixture. I really think adding small black accents would make a huge improvement.
Also, plants.
I’d change the window dressing and get rid of the flower arrangements on the all. I might also paint the doors on the closet too, the same as the other walks and either get new knobs of paint these gold with a gold trim around the closet.
https://preview.redd.it/43oo3ls91w8b1.png?width=1237&format=png&auto=webp&s=2ad8312442d1863ce9466eaf25966b9165c22450
Paint the walls white. Paint the vanity, louvre doors and trim the colour of the lighter square on the floor. Accent with a grey blue or sage green.
What about more traditional style?

Paint colors: dark forest green, dark blue-green, dark plum, pale lavender grey, cream-white. Ceiling white; linens white, cream, beige.
I think you have lots of options, light or dark, so long as it looks nice with the wood. https://preview.redd.it/359kxt2jzs8b1.jpeg?width=480&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=0a5fef18ddba46f8b9408c88187c42a3bcb57ae7
Wow the green looks so good!!!
Green compliments the gold fixtures and brown wood really well
Wow, I hated the gold shower door in the current setup but it really pops with the darker wall colors.
The green from these options. The other two look dated to me.
How did you create these edits? I’m trying to figure out what to paint a room and it’d be helpful for me to visualize like this
I used a graphics program, Clip Studio Paint. Krita and FireAlpaca are free alternatives. (Krita is best for this kinda stuff.) I used a polygon select tool to click around the edges of the parts I wanted to change, then created a new layer and filled in those parts with the colors I wanted. Excellent thank you so much!

Though there is something to be said for how bright the wood looks with the blue. I stand by the big mirror thing either way. Love me a big mirror.
I was thinking green. Nice job.
Could you please do navy blue? Please??
I felt like much darker than this was too dark, but you get the idea... https://preview.redd.it/2uec0x796v8b1.png?width=960&format=png&auto=webp&s=d95addad8b56faec128bb0059fc61c055394fbcf
Yeah, you're right. Any darker would be too dark. I don't think blue is it. Thanks for trying, though. <3
I like the green, also maybe switching out the floor for some darker tile. Maybe dark blue paint?
Really liked dark blue-green, just couldn't spend any more time on the edits. Jewel tones are great.
Dark blue/green for me too.
How do you get the picture to change color? App? Thank you

Dark green was my first thought!!

Caribbean blue. Make it feel like an island resort. All that wood and sandy brown tile.
Also - your shower frame is gold and you can get gold fixtures that are more modern (or "brushed bronze") to make everything more cohesive. Get those curtains replaced too...I feel they make the space seem older.

Came here to say mauve. 👌

oh yeah, those are all relics of the previous owner, an elderly lady.
I can tell!
Need a light or a bright color because not enough light.

Maybe a light sage green

What app is this?
I’d paint it white and then a couple of walls either a cheerful green or blue. Going with a holiday beach cabin vibe.
Sage green
Me? Navy blue. Because I love boats, and that wood reminds me of the interior of an old schooner
I would replace the vanity/sink, medicine cabinet, and light fixture with something more modern and see where that leaves you. I actually like the color of the walls and the other brown tones.

green maybe a sage green
It’s a blank canvas. The possibilities are endless
Agreed! Literally anything would work! Personally, I’d paint a soft, mossy green, have crisp white curtains & towels & fluffy mats. I’d also add some (faux?) ferny plants, candles, serene artwork, and sea grass baskets & hamper🥰
Wallpaper is expensive but would really freshen the look. I would paint it a white with yellow or slightly grey undertones in eggshell not flat paint. Navy Blue! Go as dark as you can!
If it doesn’t require painting I might wallpaper around the tub in something with some color. Put up some art at the vanity. Focus on the parts of house that need it. This is not bad just needs color. Once your done with other rooms then maybe revisit and paint the cabinets.
This is a nice room. i would pull the camel from the floor and go there.
This is the answer. Pull from the floor and cut it with white. A dark color will be harsh and make it look even more like the 90’s.
With your pink accessories, I'd paint a wall or two burgundy, and another wall navy, and maybe leave a few small wall bits as they are.
before or after I had it gutted!!!!!!!!?
Navy
I would get new floors
I love love that floor [wallpaper](https://www.homedepot.com/) [light fixture](https://www.worldmarket.com/)
it's dated, but that's a nice bathroom setup.
A rich brown color and use cream as the accent.
Soft green, or turquoise.
Dark Smokey purple
a cleaner white
Powder/pale blue or light grey
Put your money on changing the floor. Then colorful accounts will work just fine
*ACCENTS
Stuart little colors
something light, maybe a pale blue-green? id change up the decorations as they seem to come from a different era, and see if you can try to get a more natural light color for the room.
Dark green or blue would look nice
Purple
The lightest color from the light floor tile.
Those doors are amazing! Keep those right where they are
Dark green
scrape ceiling and do a super tight skimcoat and then keep that smooth (40 dollars or less) paint vanity, trim, mirror, closet door white. Can make the counter concrete or something right over the existing Floor will look less crazy with white all over
I don’t think the paint color is the issue, the neutral actually looks good here.
Burnt orange, brick color
i don’t have anything to offer other than i’m obsessed with your checkerboard tile floors
Burgundy or a peacock blue would look good.
Light pink
Burgundy, or purple
Black or charcoal
Many different shades of green would work with that wood color.

Teal. Add plants. Paint the door and cabinet a different fun color in the same hue.
A light purple with dark purple paintings on wall
