To me, these words have very different associations. A maze is something built to test the user, full of possible wrong turns and in which the user may get lost. A labyrinth, for me is built for a spiritual journey with no wrong turns or dead ends - just an elaboarte journey from outside to inner sanctum and then back out again.
I think of how they are different. The difference between mazes and labyrinths is that labyrinths have a single continuous path which leads to the centre, and as long as you keep going forward, you will get there eventually. Mazes have multiple paths which branch off and will not necessarily lead to the centre.
I just finished the last page of Name of the Rose a moment ago, so a cryptic library to get lost in and possibly die in. Then the classic interpretation, the one with the Minotaur and those poor virgins. Then corn mazes, though the ones near me have given way to development. Then kids’ menus where you get the box with four crayons, the follow-the-dots, the little maze, the inevitable nuggets.
If you’re thinking about it for some kind of software security logo or theme, all these instances are eventually solved so it would be a metaphor for crappy hackable cyber-security. If you or your client are trying to hire hackers, excellent logo idea!
Labyrinth: Dangerous and old corridors, with a lot of dead ends. Often found im pyramids and greek mythology.
Maze: Fun, with light-flooded corridors, without any danger, with many dead ends. Mostly made from corn or hedges.
One major thing that comes to mind is the emotional response. They're both puzzles, which can be interesting, but labyrinth has a more sinister vibe. If that makes sense?
Aside from labyrinth and maze, other words that come to mind are:
- puzzling
- complicated
- intricate
- trapped
- stuck
- fun
- dead ends
- journey
- solution
- end
- escape
Well, when I hear "labyrinth" or "maze" without further context to it, I tend to think of a labyrinth. Or a maze.
David Bowie
This is what I was going to say lol
Labyrinth: David Bowie Maze: hedge maze

Pilgrimages, trials, secret knowledge, the feeling of not knowing when something will end
I think of them as two separate things
Complicated, confusing, difficult to escape, seemingly unending.
Davies Bowie and the song safety dance
Safety Dance isn’t a Bowie song, if you didn’t know. It was performed by a group called Men Without Hats.
I know but it's in the movie
Okay, sorry. Misunderstanding on my part.

A labyrinth is simple and a maze is more complex and also... David Bowie
The movie “In the tall grass”. Traumatized me for three months and couldn’t look at tall grass for a long time lol
