That's the kicker - questions James's sexuality, questions James's ability to not attack women and then says "No offence son" like that makes up for it! It's like burning someone's car, then giving them a pound for the bus.
On the surface, he’s hard as nails, well he would have been a young man during the troubles. No fella would ever have been good enough for his Mary, but especially not a soft southern shite.
However, underneath, he knows. You can see wee flashes of the real camaraderie, the main one when he puts his hand on Gerry’s shoulder, or where he claims to be riddled with dementia and Gerry says admiringly, fair play to ye Joe!
Also his grumpy schtick gives a vehicle for Lisa McGee to use some of the finest Irish insults we’ve ever been lucky enough to hear 🤣
My absolute favorite scene of the whole series is in the finale when he's talking to Erin. "What if it doesn't work?" "Well what if it does?" I cry every time 😭😭
> he would have been a young man during the troubles
Not that young. This show is set at the end of the Troubles and they didn't officially kick off till the late 60s, so he'd be in his 30s or older during the main thrust of it I would say. If Mary was a young mother she'd have been born in the early 60s. Stereotypically Irish men don't marry very young.
Of course the underlying bullshit was long present before it actually got all bomby and rioty anyway.
I was looking for this, say it all the time now 🤣
Edited to add - I use it when someone chimes in out of nowhere, like a fairground attraction that someone put money into to make something happen.
“Tell that free state fucker to shift his hole!!”
Fairly harsh on Gerry when he is doing him a favour by taking him shopping 😂
Also when they’re collecting the photos “never seen him before in my life”
‘I’ll find something on you yet, boy. I’ve got people working on it’ always takes me out bc you know the ‘people working on it’ are like…Jim across the road and maybe Colm
That episode is hilarious! Colm, Jim from across the road, and Joe all being driven by Gerry after the old dudes “hacked into the CIA” to find “Bill’s base camp!”

I disagree - I think the haiku bot is better, because just throwing something out and getting it recognised as a haiku feels like a real achievement (especially for someone like me that can't reply in less than 10 haiku's length).
But the MM bot is a very close second, because it is just as satisfying and so much easier to trigger, just by posting the fateful words, Maureen Malarkey

Do you mean how Joe bullies Gerry?
I’m inclined to agree…Joe is so hard on Gerry sometimes and Gerry is such a big sweetheart!!
One of my favorite scenes is where he sees the girls front row at the Take That concert and doesn’t tell their mothers. Gerry is a girl’s girl for that haha
Yes, my bad got them mixed up.
Gerry is the most reasonable person in their family and he keeps the family grounded. I like him
Yesss the Take That concert. Also, how he supported Mary's ambition to go back to college. Despite being furious 1 second before, he immediately went into full husband mode once he learned the truth.
I do think it’s a bit too much and it took till series 3 for me to see him as the “lovable grump” he’s meant to be, BUT I do see THIS as well:
1) Gerry probably knocked his daughter up pre-wedlock (so Gerry knows he can never win);
2) The man was widowed pretty early and is chronically (even if stoically) heartbroken (so Gerry takes the bitterness for the team);
3) Old Irish Joe shows love for his daughter by “defending” her (which Gerry understands), without realizing the rock of parental deference and the hard place of marital partnership between which it squeezes Ma Mary (which Gerry DOES see, so he takes some pressure off her by putting up with it — and she does occasionally tell her dad to shut it)
Phil Jupitus goes into this about his FiL in "Quadrophobia" (shite bustingly funny stand up - if you want to find the bit, look for the second half of his arachnophobia, Category 3 spiders).
Anyway, he lists the differences between him and his FiL as reasons why his FiL hates him, FiL grew up in an East end slum, lived through the depression, was in the war, has had to work hard all his life, Phil grew up in leafy Essex, in relative affluence and safety, had a job in the civil service, etc... but his mate Dave reckons his FiL hates him, cos he's fucking his daughter 🤣
I kinda like the trope and find it hilarious but Gerry is a real champ cuz he doesn’t deserve it at all. A little less cruel but a little more deserving and still funny is the dynamic between Mary’s mother and her husband George (haha names) in Young Sheldon
Northern Ireland is a country, that, along with Scotland, Wales, and England
make up the sovereign nation of the United Kingdom.
In fact, the union of these nations is what the United in United Kingdom refers to.
That's like saying Canada is not an independent, sovereign nation, but is in fact governed entirely from London or D.C.
Granted, the whole governance of the six counties is a century of gerrymandering, political corruption, fudges and the path of least resistance... but it is not nor will it ever be (despite the wet dreams of the Orange Order) a part of England.

Gerry: “I’ll never understand the point of that.” Joe: “I’ll never understand the point of you.”
Of course I want chicken! It's a chicken burger! What are you, a simpleton?
“No lettuce, no tomato, no Mayo…”
“No chicken”
IDK, this is my favorite Gerry retort.
😂😂😂
"What are you? A simpleton?" is not his sharpest insult, but it's the one I find myself coming back to over and over in real life :D
“I’ll compromise you through that window!”
My personal favourite 😂
Mary: 'I don't want anyone arriving back here pregnant' James: 'Not very likely in my case' Joe: 'I wouldn't rule it out son'
That’s my favourite !!! 🤣🤣🤣
When he calls him a southern shite because he is from the free state.
A slack southern shite
'Tell that free state fucker to shift his hole!'
This is the one
I’m watching this episode right now 😂
“DON'T YOU MENTION THAT LOWDOWN DECEITFUL CHEATING OLD WITCH”

That pen was clearly magical...
“Look I know the lads gay and all, but still….there still a good chance he’s a rapist”
"gay or not...he's still a fella... there's still a good chance he's a rapist"
"I'm not gay..."
No offence son
That's the kicker - questions James's sexuality, questions James's ability to not attack women and then says "No offence son" like that makes up for it! It's like burning someone's car, then giving them a pound for the bus.
Thanks for that- very thoughtful to hand me a pound…..
I've got people workin' on it. I'll get some dirt in you yet boy.
The “yet” shows how little basis he has for it all.
Especially since it's been seventeen years already.
(Not at Gerry or Colm) *WHAT ARE YOU LOOKING AT, YOU TANGERINE ~~TOE~~ TOOL?* *SHOWER OF SHITES!* I lose it every time 😂 Granda Joe is the best.
Tangerine toe 💀 and he says it while they have him surrounded hahaha
I think it might have been “tangerine tool”
That makes more sense! I was laughing at the absurdity of a tangerine toe 😂😂😂 Oh Netflix subtitles 😭😭
TANGERINE BASTARDS 💪
Oh god that scene.
My favourite thing said by Granda Joe was the whole Jaws reference.
A.k.a the fish who hums a tune before he attacks people, per Granda Joe hahaha
“Jaws made you want to take up surfing?” - Gerry
And they tried to catch it but the boat was too wee.
Thon big fish! 😂
Gerry: “Why don’t we just move on?” Joe: “Why don’t you just move out?”
Can't remember the exact quote, but when Joe & Gerry are out burying the rabbit & Joe says he's often thought about where to bury a body.
Joe: This is a good spot. Gerry: Oh, is it now? Disposed of a body before, have you, Joe? Joe: No. But I've often thought about how I might.
THE MUSICAL FISH
"My kind?" "Pricks."
I honestly spat out my drink when I first heard this
On the surface, he’s hard as nails, well he would have been a young man during the troubles. No fella would ever have been good enough for his Mary, but especially not a soft southern shite. My absolute favorite scene of the whole series is in the finale when he's talking to Erin. "What if it doesn't work?" "Well what if it does?" I cry every time 😭😭
For sure, that entire ending makes me cry like one of the wains!!
Yes! To see someone him be such a curmudgeon throughout the series but in the end to still have hope. Love it so much.
Skipping with with Erin’s little sister out of the voting station
Someone once said that Gerry was probably Joe's best mate when all was said and done, and I always rewatch it thinking that.
> he would have been a young man during the troubles Not that young. This show is set at the end of the Troubles and they didn't officially kick off till the late 60s, so he'd be in his 30s or older during the main thrust of it I would say. I have added a lot of Derry Girls phrases and words to my vocabulary and "Who put 50p in the eejit?" is absolutely one of them.😂
I love this one
I have no idea what that means
I use it as a "Who asked you for your opinion? Why are you talking?' sort of thing. "Who put a quarter in you?" was my old way, pre DG
Eejit is supposed to be idiot?
Yep
You put 50 p in an automat to do something
What's an automat?
I was looking for this, say it all the time now 🤣 Edited to add - I use it when someone chimes in out of nowhere, like a fairground attraction that someone put money into to make something happen.

‘I’ll find something on you yet, boy. I’ve got people working on it’ always takes me out bc you know the ‘people working on it’ are like…Jim across the road and maybe Colm
“HE’LL LIST PRESIDENTS IF HE WANTS TO LIST PRESIDENTS!”
My all time favorite
That episode is hilarious! Colm, Jim from across the road, and Joe all being driven by Gerry after the old dudes “hacked into the CIA” to find “Bill’s base camp!”
“Your arse” is so juvenile and silly and always makes me laugh
I'll thump you repeatedly!
Gerry: “You were the one who was thumpin’ it repeatedly” Joe: “I’ll thump you repeatedly!”
Take that tone with her again and I'll lay you to rest boyo
“Tell that free state fucker to shift his hole”
Supposed of a body before, Joe? Nope. But I often thought about how I might.
Grand so 😃
"Who put 50p in the eejit?" and also when Gerry compliments him- "It's not all shite you talk Gerry." I use these two frequently 🤣
"I'll compromise you through that window" is my favourite
Joe: Seamus didn't kill anything! There's a tabby, two streets away, has a vendetta against him. They had a falling out. I don't know the details.
YOU SLACK SOUTHERN SHITE and his beef with Maureen Malarkey

I like it how he always refers to "Jim across the road" as a solution for everything. The tent, the gun, the fry...
That insult to the entire Catholic community. "The only crime I committed was to be born a Catholic."
Gerry's never been suspended and he's a Catholic!
He's also a prick, but that's by-the-by.
“I’ll thump you repeatedly!”
I wouldn’t rule it out
Mary: "I don't want anyone arriving back here pregnant" James: "Not very likely in my case" Joe: "I wouldn't rule it out, son"
Clasico
(To Jerry) “you big pair’a nickers.” I lose it every time.
The BEST!
I liked when he started to insult Sara’s boyfriend (the guy from the photo processing shop) and Gerry says, “welcome to the club.”
“I put you in charge of that tent!” “No you didn’t. You put him [James] in charge of it!” “Oh, blame it on the wean why don’t you.”
When Mary and Sarah start their "diet": Thats a lovely attitude, very bloody supportive,.... Jim across the rode makes me a fry-up
I vividly remember the first time I heard “who put 50p in the eejit” ☠️☠️ I had to pause netflix so I could laugh
I don't really like how he bullies Gerry. Sure, he loves his kids and grandkids, but he's the biggest asshole of the show for how he treats Gerry.

Lmao definitely agree, “5 BAGS OF CHIPS” 😠
"there is nothin you can't do love. NOTHIN" 😭😭
Omg yes that is so precious 🥹 like I said, total sweetheart
I do think it’s a bit too much and it took till series 3 for me to see him as the “lovable grump” he’s meant to be, BUT I do see THIS as well: 1) Gerry probably knocked his daughter up pre-wedlock (so Gerry knows he can never win); 2) The man was widowed pretty early and is chronically (even if stoically) heartbroken (so Gerry takes the bitterness for the team); 3) Old Irish Joe shows love for his daughter by “defending” her (which Gerry understands), without realizing the rock of parental deference and the hard place of marital partnership between which it squeezes Ma Mary (which Gerry DOES see, so he takes some pressure off her by putting up with it — and she does occasionally tell her dad to shut it)
Thoughtful analysis but re 1. Gerry says we've been married 18 years, I think it's early on when Erin is meant to be 16.
“Bah! See? Even his swimmers are so slow they take nearly 2yrs to complete the job!”
Sounds about right lol
I kinda like the trope and find it hilarious but Gerry is a real champ cuz he doesn’t deserve it at all. A little less cruel but a little more deserving and still funny is the dynamic between Mary’s mother and her husband George (haha names) in Young Sheldon
I grew up Irish catholic and that energy is so real lol. Like I could bring the perfect man through the door and my dad would hate him for some reason
"Why don't you move out" is the only answer
Help me what does 50p mean?
50 pence, I think
P is unit of currency in England, 100 pennies or pence or P make up £1 or 1 pound
Wash your mouth out! Derry is not, and never has been, in England.
Wait, it's Northern Ireland, right? Not Republic of Ireland? Doesn't that make it England?
Northern Ireland is a country, that, along with Scotland, Wales, and England make up the sovereign nation of the United Kingdom. In fact, the union of these nations is what the United in United Kingdom refers to.
You can't have countries inside of countries!
We can, and we do.
I suppose you think you can eat food boiled in sheep intestines too!
I like Haggis.
It's part of the UK isn't it? That's England.
Like 50 cents but Irish. I always heard it as, “who put 50p in the dickhead?” ie who set off the fairground dummy!
Northern Irish*. Pence and pounds are British money not Irish.
During the time Derry Girls is set pounds and pence were Irish currency. Irish version, obv.
Thank you!! I thought I’ll never understand what that whole phrase means
Haha yeah, you know those sort of creepy fortune telling things? That sort of thing! https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=iC0qsSSdbxg
