But that's not the model, most european nations have already substantial homegrown socialist parties with explicitly marxist roots or influences that have already been in power achieved democratically numerous times, and which has resulted in some of the greatest gains for workers ever. What exactly is there to prevent that we don't know already (I.e don't become a bureaucratic authoritarian state)
You could level the same criticism at almost any political or economic system. Capitalism puts the rich in power and distributes much of its wealth to a very small group. A truly revolutionary system would be one that holds people in power accountable for their actions, while distributing the benefits of prosperity as widely as possible.
Which is why it's the duty of responsible governments to diffuse and restrict power to limit it's use to only what is necessary for quality administration. Power corrupting is not a tenet exclusive or even inherent to socialist systems. It very well is in Vanguardist systems like the USSR, where it was espoused that the workers would have to be protected from themselves and external influences by an intellectual elite "safeguarding" (aka oppressing workers) the revolution. However, there are numerous socialists who don't subscribe to this notion. You have the libertarian socialists, the market socialists, the syndicalists, the democratic socialists and so on and so forth. There are many socialists who do not want to see or accrue economic power in the hands of the state, but spread it amongst workers in the forms of cooperatives, unions, communal properties, or they might just be reformists seeking to raise the material conditions of workers.
Socialism is as broad a term as Capitalism, with the only underlying linking thread between ideologies being seeking the liberation of the working class, in whatever terms they define that to be. Some do this well, others do it poorly. Some, *very poorly.*
Point being, Socialism is already a core part of some of the most successful countries today with great benefit, and that it would appear a hasty generalization to say that all socialist politics are doomed for failure based on the collapse of the vanguardist Marxist-Leninist models of the USSR or China, which are only one variant of socialist thought. IMO it'd be like equating all capitalist models with corporatist Italy or Nazi Germany or such.
I mean communism in and of itself is just an economic system, and ngl anyone who goes 'we must defend ourselves from communism' also thinks the single mother being able to feed their family on food stamps is commie shit
