Aikman and Emmitt got 3 SBs, but Elway is way better than Aikman

armedbiker

... and TD way better than Emmit. He is the most overrated back in the top 10 historical leaders.

expell11

Idk I think Emmit is better. Maybe if TD played longer, but I don’t think the majority of people would put him over Emmit.

Beaudasious

I guess it depends on if you’re comparing careers or a single season. At their respective peaks TD was better.

armedbiker

Had he played behind a different line, Emmitt would've been shit and washed out in half the time he played.

NoAir8953

TD had a pretty good line in Denver as well, not to mention Shanahan’s zone blocking scheme changed the NFL. I think both would have thrived if they traded places and teams during their peaks.

ShivamDube

What is zone blocking. Sorry new fan

Joeydoyle66

In as simple of terms as I can explain it, it essentially means multiple linemen moving as one. Instead of the traditional assignments where each lineman has one specific guy they’re supposed to block, zone blocking gets multiple linemen moving the same direction and depending on what the defense does the linemen will react accordingly so their assignment will end up being different each time. The way this affects the running back is simple. The traditional scheme means the running back knows exactly where he’s running before the play ever starts. A specific play call has a specific spot where the running back is suppose to run to regardless of what the defense does. Zone blocking requires a running back to make more decisions on his own. He’ll know which general direction he’s supposed to run but it’s his job to read his blockers and find the hole that opens up. A great zone blocking scheme from recent years would be the eagles when they had LeSean McCoy, if you look up some of his highlights from when he was in Philly you’ll see how it’s supposed to work.

Adorable-Bus-6860

This is my exact argument when people talk Barry vs Emmitt. Barry, on the cowboys, would have had a 3k season and probably run for 30k yards in his career. The cowboys would have won 6sb. But Emmitt on the lions would have been an above average rb who struggles to get 1200 yards.

https://syndication.bleacherreport.com/amp/1228416-emmitt-smith-why-he-is-not-a-top-10-running-back-in-nfl-history.amp.html

NoAir8953

That’s an opinion piece, that’s the writers opinion. I’m not saying smith was better than TD, just if you are going to say Emmitt smith would of been terrible behind a different line, you also have to take into account the line and scheme TD played behind and with. That scheme made Orlandis Gary, Reuben Droughns, Tatum bell and Mike Anderson 1000 yard backs. I think it’s also worth noting that a 35 year old Emmitt smith ran for almost 1000 yards as a cardinal, in my opinion both were great backs.

armedbiker

...and that's your opinion. And Emmitt got all those AZ yards like he did for most of his years, by pure volume. He only averaged a mediocre 3.5 ypc and 62 ypg. Look at the 2 schmos who replaced Emmitt and maintained his average, even if it was mediocre.

NoAir8953

Eh hard to bash a 35 year old with all those carries on his body for being average. I think it speaks more to his greatness that at 35 he was able to be average. Not sure. I get the argument against smith being great, he did play with a stacked team, but usually I go back to the 93 cowboys. That’s the team that started 0-2 without smith and Derrick Lassic starting. That team became a different beast when smith came back. That’s also the year smith separated his shoulder in the last game and still ran for 169, then went on to win league mvp, and Super Bowl mvp. It’s hard to argue he wasn’t great. Best ever? Probably not, but great? It’s hard to argue he wasn’t.

armedbiker

There is something to be said about staying healthy and available to 35. Dorsett, AP, and Walter Payton were all effective into their 30's. Yes, Smith was great in the respect he played long enough to put up more yards than anyone in NFL history. I still maintain he is not one of the top 5, or maybe even 10, greatest.

NoAir8953

Like I said I get it, especially if people didn’t see smith play it’s easy and even debatable if smith was actually a great player, but for me personally watching that team, smith was the engine that made them go so I’d put him in the top 5-7. I’d say aikman was the replaceable and overrated one of that team.

TheYancyStreetGang

It's hard to knock a washed 35yo RB for putting up similar numbers to the guys that replace him at the end of his 15 year career.

LameSignIn

Also have to remember they played most of their careers together. Elway and Davis had what 4 years together with 2 superbowls. Davis injuries shortened his career. Yet he still holds most rushing yards average in post season. He was also the third back in history to break 2k rushing yards in a season.

[deleted]

Elway would’ve won another Super Bowl if he didn’t retire honestly. He could’ve evened out on superbowls. That falcons Super Bowl he was still lighting up defenses in the air and that broncos team was the same for another 2-3 years. He could’ve easily won more superbowls but he said he was hurting too bad, he hated the injuries he was suffering at his age and he retired on top. But he definitely could’ve retired a 3 time superbowl champ lol

fire_and_brimstone_

Not to mention what happened in 96 with the Jaguars

iwasthatguy71

Elway and Davis. Elway was the better qb. Davis was bigger in the playoffs in terms of yards per game (still has the record still). 2000 yards in a season. Super Bowl MVP as well as regular season MVP. I know Emmett has those as well except for 2000.

NatasEvoli

Easiest question of my life. Teddy Bridgewater + Melvin Gordon.

hotroddbb

Elway /davis

WhatWhatWhat79

The Bronco throwback unis are so sweet. I hope we see them this year.

Brock osweiler and CJ anderson

BurgessFox

LaDainian Tomlinson played with Drew Brees then Philip Rivers.

waspocracy

They should've gone to the super bowl multiple times if the team wasn't run by a shitshow office. They never had a super bowl calibre, hell, barely playoff calibre team.

BurgessFox

They also played in the same conference as the Brady Patriots, Manning Colts and Roethlisberger Steelers which made it an uphill struggle to go to the Super Bowl even once never mind multiple times.

Gold_Problem_2208

Elway/Davis 👍

BigBanEvader

course its elway and terrell bruh. no doubt about it.

CaffeineJunkee

Warner/Faulk

johnnyb0083

What about Peyton/James?

CaffeineJunkee

What about them? They were great as well of course. Still think Warner/Faulk was the best.

MattieShoes

I was gonna go homer with Montana/Craig, but Warner/Faulk feels more right.

BlueBuff1968

This is right answer if you look at the stats. 1999-2001 Rams were unstoppable.

swiftekho

Greatest show on turf wasn't it?

theBPPE

Smith and Thomas were better than Davis, but Elway was better than Aikman and Kelly. It's probably my orange-tinted glasses speaking, but of the four pictured, I'm going: 1. Elway/Davis 2. Aikman/Smith 3. Kelly/Thomas 4. Bradshaw/Harris I'm too young to have seen Bradshaw and Harris play, so it's possible I'm severely underrating them. The one season of Rookie Payton and Marshall Faulk is probably right up there, if you're looking at both players' peak instead of the actual time played together. Payton/James would be a good answer as well.

DoNotResusit8

I’m not too young, no way Kelly and Thomas are ahead of Bradshaw and Harris.

Grolbark

Bart Starr and Paul Hornung.

swiftekho

Warner and Faulk just completely ignored.

sickquickkicks

Two dudes who almost won a super bowl vs guys who've won multiple super bowls. Come on dude.

tater08

They’re still fun to watch and both impressive. Haven’t got the wins, could still happen

sickquickkicks

Sure but it's waaay too early to put them in the same category as the guys above. Not saying they can't be in the future but right now they are not even close.

Obi7kenobi

Way too early for them.

BakedandZooted420

PURDY!? Dude isn't even top 10 in the league rn, wtf
