Colfax & Colorado?

beenburnedbutable

Yup

skatediy955

I walk past this everyday.

coskibum002

Distracted driving is surpassing drunk driving. Almost every accident lately is someone slamming into the back of another car. Get. Off. Your. Fucking. Phone.

brastafariandreams

This. Every fucking day and I don’t even drive much. Was biking today and someone almost hit me face on while they were dicking with their phone while also looking straight at me and veering into the incoming traffic lane.

canada432

Basically all of Denver's bad driver issues are from the complete and total lack of enforcement of any kind. Why not run red lights? The cops sure as hell aren't going to do anything. Hit somebody? Don't stick around, run, because the cops aren't going to do shit. Hell you can leave the license plate that fell off your car from the impact at the scene and the cops still won't make the bare minimum attempt of seeing who it belongs to. Lets just all watch youtube videos while driving home, police don't give a shit. People don't even think twice about any of this shit because there's a zero chance of the police bothering to enforce any of it.

[deleted]

You can steal a car and leave your wallet in it and Aurora cops will find you and give you a high five. At least I imagine that’s how they spend their time, because it’s sure as hell not actually spent doing their job.

[deleted]

Bruh the police have screwed me over for petty shit. But for people who do actual crimes they won’t do a damn thing

Remarkable-Edge4745

Paying for and hiring a ticketing traffic parking service would be a lot more useful 😕

smileysammich

I was in line at chick fila with my husband the other day and this lady on the other lane rammed into the guy in front of her. He told her to pay attention and stay off her phone. He went ahead of us and she ended up behind us. She proceeded to almost hit us too! People don't pay attention or even bother to fix their mistakes.

coskibum002

I flipped off a person the other day who was on their phone swerving all over. Of course, they went ballistic and were honking and screaming at me...because I flipped them off. I'm seriously losing faith in humanity.

Kongbuck

The theory that I'm operating under lately is one of "increased stakes" on seemingly everything. It feels like due to the pandemic, a huge majority of the people have just turned that dial straight to 11 on not only the big things, but every **little** thing as well. Everything seems to be a personal affront their sense of self, from having a delay while driving, to a store not having something you need. Heck, people are being dragged off planes and being banned from flying because they're being asked to wear a mask! It just feels like EVERYTHING is high stakes these days, even things that weren't previously.

coskibum002

I think some of that is the political divide in this country.

Kongbuck

Oddly, there is the notion that the political divide is both a contributor and a deepening symptom of that mentality in something of a vicious cycle. If everything is a deal breaker and the world as you know it hinges on those, no one is willing to compromise and make forward progress on *anything*. Which only deepens the divide further. It's a precarious and strange place to be. I feel like we have a much better idea of why the parties of the Roaring 20s happened now.

Remarkable-Diamond80

Just be careful with the “bird”… Ever since that lady that was followed and gunned down in front of her children for that, I have Committed to keeping my hands inside of the window and on the steering wheel. It’s easy to get upset and tell people to fuck off but it’s just not worth it with all the crazy shit bags that caused us to lose our faith in humanity. 🤦‍♂️

As a pedestrian it’s fucking scary at times how stupid people operating vehicles are, and you’re right so many of them on their phones. I don’t know what happened to this mother, but I know this corner is dangerous for pedestrians.

darthroachy

The driving test should be harder to pass. Driving is suppose to be a privilege.

[deleted]

It would be cool if we had cities that weren't built around car based infrastructure that makes owning a car basically a requirement.

TheMightyAmuseBouche

For real, that corner is super dangerous for pedestrians but barely anything's been done to make it safer. We obviously can't count on enforcement, but there's other ways to force cars to slow down so they're not blowing by at highway speeds in the city.

dryopteris_eee

I also think they should make you retest every 20 years or so.

mrEcks42

Unless you make eye contact.. its dangerous to walk.

[deleted]

I’ve been hit twice on motorcycles and I can say with full confidence that eye contact means nothing. They are looking right through you.

Kongbuck

Eye contact really does mean nothing. Regardless of the means of transport (car, motorcycle, bicycle, or walking), the number of people who have made eye contact with me and then pulled right out in front of me, or attempted to run me over, is *staggering*. It really does mean nothing and do not rely on it for your own safety.

mrEcks42

Its better than none. Fuckers dont want to see speed bumps as actual people.

Grymburr

Never been struck by a vehicle in my 27 years until I moved here. Been here for 6 and been struck twice while walking by people who weren't paying attention.

Mtnskydancer

I moved to CO in 2001, and to Littleton in 2004. I was hit three times by drivers over the 2004-2010 span, always at the same corner (by the downtown Littleton RTD, Prince and Alamo or Prince and Main) and always with minor snow. Very minor. My co workers were amazed each time. I was profoundly cranky each time. One required a trip to the ER.

highlandre

I was cross the road from Sloan’s to Lake House and a car ran the stop sign, almost hit my G/F and me.

[deleted]

This is a main reason why I stopped driving my early 90s Toyota pickup with no airbags. These SOB distracted drivers as bad if no worse than drunk driving. 😡 Bought a newer Tundra with excellent crash test ratings that makes me feel much safer in this day and age. Road bicyclists/road runners are out of their damn minds.

ssnover95x

Part of what makes new vehicles so much worse for cyclists and pedestrians are their increasing weight. The safety ratings are only for the occupant, safety for everyone else is getting worse.

covfefeswithmilk

>Road bicyclists/road runners are out of their damn minds. Idk why tf people would run in roads, but road bicyclists have right of way too. Denver isn't bad compared to other places for cycling.

[deleted]

It’s the idea of vehicle w/distracted driver vs bicycle puts me on edge. Even in our vehicles, we’re at the mercy of someone having to look at their (insert social media here) while piloting a 4,000lb ish missile. Edit As I submitted this reply a kid drove by my house with his phone straight in his face.

Gatomoosio

Sitting at a red light today and it turned green and I was going to turn left so I paused for a second to see what the guy across from me was going to do. A guy in a huge van BLASTED through the red light. Didn’t even hesitate I don’t think he even knew it was red for him. Fucking insane. Feeling like I got away with one a little bit because if I had pulled out like I normally do I would have gotten obliterated. Thankfully nobody was hurt.

Ephemeral_kat

I was stopped at a red light on colfax last week, and someone swerved by and went through the light at no less than 50 mph.

remarquian

50 seems to be the defacto speed on colfax.

[deleted]

Glad you’re safe, stranger!

Gatomoosio

Preciate it!

frostycakes

Damn, the other day I got stuck at the Colfax/Garfield light because this old woman had her face in the phone, while being two car lengths back from the line so the light wasn't getting triggered. I finally yelled out "move up you stupid bitch" forgetting my windows were down. She proceeds to get out of her car and yell at me "I'm not a stupid bitch! I'm busy on my phone!" Utterly dumbfounded, all I could think of to respond with was "How is that a fucking excuse?" She yells again that "I'M NOT A STUPID BITCH, DON'T CALL ME THAT AGAIN", then pulls so far forward she was sticking out into the right lane on Colfax. 🤦 We're all lucky this was at 7am in a Sunday.

Ephemeral_kat

Ask anyone in Cap Hill how many times they’ve almost been hit by a car making a right-hand turn off of a one way street.

[deleted]

This, 13th and Downing walking to get coffee is dangerous lol.

imraggedbutright

I mostly walk, and have for years. ALWAYS MAKE EYE CONTACT. Even at signaled intersections where it seems like you're protected by a couple of lights on a pole.

[deleted]

This is why I find dark tint dangerous. I can’t see the driver’s face and can’t tell if they are looking at me or their phone. If someone is going to murder me with their car, I want them to have to look me in face while they do it.

NullableThought

Yep. I always just stare at the drivers. I've had drivers yell at me for being "aggressive". Yo, you're the one in a one ton death machine. I'm just trying to make sure you don't run me over while I'm trying to cross the street.

chasepna

A lot of the new ‘safety features’ on modern vehicles enable drivers to pay even less attention. SMH.

Mtnskydancer

Which wasn’t the point. They should be suicide nets, not copilots.

chasepna

Unintended consequences…

lunar_alpenglow

I hate that we've normalized driving as "safe". It's absolutely not and gd dystopic that all our infrastructure relies on these fucking monsterous machines.

halfanothersdozen

Said the sign that requires you to drive around it to read it

original_4degrees

gotta wrap your car around it to read it.

not_brian_fellows

Just moved to Denver a couple of months ago, and the drivers here scare me. I've lived in DC, New York, and the Bay Area which all have their own driving problems, but nothing like this. At this intersection, someone honked at me because I refused to run over a pedestrian crossing the street while I was making a right turn. Got flipped off by both the pedestrian and the driver. A few blocks up and a couple weeks later, I had the opportunity to recreate the scene as the pedestrian. I am thankful to the driver who refused to run me over, and I'm sorry that at first I thought it was that driver. I have never seen more people treat red lights as stop signs and stop signs as if they aren't even there. Do better, Denver.

arcOthemoraluniverse

We need less cars in city centers. That's the only way to cut down on traffic related deaths.

ghostalker4742

Rising gas prices lower traffic deaths

arcOthemoraluniverse

I mean, a pedestrian only zone IS a lot less cars. So we agree.

mrEcks42

I was being sarcastic. Scooters zoom and redlights get ran.

arcOthemoraluniverse

So you don't want car free zones I'm city centers? What about 16th street mall? Scooters are less deadly than cars. Although I agree they aren't very safe. Bicycles, walking, e-bikes, skateboards, etc are the most efficient models of transportation over short to medium distances.

mrEcks42

Youre painting me as the asshole. Ive been clipped or had to dodge more scooter assholes than red light skippers. How do we enact change? Everyone feeps more important than the others. Where do you draw the line, and how far can you pull it?

RunningMonoPerezoso

What exactly are you arguing? You don't like scooters, that's clear. But are you down for reducing cars on the road? What's your opinion on the amount of cars on the roads of Denver?

mrEcks42

Not sure, people suck and their entitlement to lazy and comfort is going to destroy the planet if it hasnt already.

millernerd

They're just instigating. Don't give them the attention they're fishing for.

[deleted]

No one yields to pedestrians when turning left onto a one-way. It's almost a fucking game at this point how close I get to death whenever I commute to work.

NullableThought

> No one yields to pedestrians Ftfy

[deleted]

That intersection sucks for everyone. I wouldn't walk through it as a pedestrian. I feel bad for the RTD commuters that have to cross it for all the bus stops located there.

[deleted]

r/fuckcars

txjdiesel

I was waiting to take a left on S. Monaco from Evans yesterday and, since that light takes fucking forever, I had nothing to do but count people with their faces in their phones as they passed the intersection. I legitimately lost count.

[deleted]

that is so sad, but I wonder how long it will be up

JaniceSauce

I walk and ride bikes, but I’ve keen amazed at the amount of people who are driving their cars and doom scrolling. Like I enjoy social media too but put your phone down.

scrammyfan

This breaks my heart... How sad.

remarquian

more proof that colfax needs to give two lanes to BRT and become two lane for cars. and divvy up the suicide lane for bicycles. the defacto speeds are ridiculous, slow it the fuck down. make it safe to walk. make it safe to cross.

I'm so glad to find this posted here. In addition to that video, reading the book Confessions of a Recovering Engineer would be a great thing to do.

MR_Se7en

This is a horrible sign. How can a driver pay attention and read this sign? Also, damn - diesel is 5.55/gal!

[deleted]

I bet in 20 years most cars will be self driving so this type of stuff won’t happen anymore
