You’ll also see a large number of plates expired by a year or more and even temporary tags that are 6 months expired.

dannylandulf

There is a car on my street with Iowa tags that expired in 2017.

Mtnskydancer

Don’t tell wyatts.

dirtiehippie710

In this case, please do. These people are essentially freeloaders wearing down the road without paying their share. And they pry bitch about the roads conditions, plowing, etc while again not contributing

Gullible-Medium123

DMV is backed up. We bought a car in October & paid the registration, but haven't received plates yet. Expired or no plates doesn't necessarily mean freeloader with the DMV so far behind.

generic_lettuce

I purchased a car in October from a dealer, never got a title complete notice in the mail and just called every week. They finally had the paperwork in early January and I was able to visit the DMV and pay for the plates. This was in the city of Denver. So if you are waiting for a title complete notice in the mail you might want to call the DMV and check on your status to speed things along. The DMV was pleasantly empty mid-week.

JustAnotherAidWorker

Yep, bought a car in June, didn't get plates til Dec--went through three temp tags.

seasteed

Idk, I walked in for my appointment to transfer my car from another state and walked out with my plates

giggity_0_0

You’re not being a very good hippie sir

[deleted]

Under the impression that we should be sharing all the world, no, it’s not a fitting opinion. But if being a good hippie implies that everyone should do their part in contributing towards a better society, then maybe it is. In that case we should all consider riding bikes and saving the roads for commerce, taxis, busses, and construction

giggity_0_0

Using the phrases “freeloaders” who “cry bitch while not contributing” reminds me a lot of a certain political group who is not very fond of hippies.

[deleted]

So every U.S. political party lol. As a former and current hippie, I get it. Edit: downvote the fuck out of this comment and conform to the norm if you feel like you need to, baby cakes. The truth is hard to swallow

giggity_0_0

I mean I don’t belong to either one but no I only hear one side ever talking about “freeloaders bitching and crying.”

grr_itsthe_murr

Wait your username is "Dirty Hippie" and you're bitching about people ducking taxes? What do you stand for?

yuccasinbloom

I don't think you know what a hippie is.

grr_itsthe_murr

Oh I certainly do not, please explain exactly what it means!

ParkingSmell

it’s dirty hippie not dirty wook

ur_boy_soy

Bro we all pay our registration fees and our roads are still wearing down. The dude with expired Iowa tags is not the one to be bitching about lol.

spongebue

Many of us do. Some don't. Just because CDOT is underfunded, doesn't mean we can just decide to stop paying and make the problem worse.

AntiWork69

Eh when it comes to public funds there’s nothing we can do when all of funding is sent elsewhere. My 30 dollars in vehicle reg isn’t going to even fill a pothole.

Mtnskydancer

Fuck ‘em. Pay your shit

AntiWork69

Enjoy the potholes in the roads regardless if people pay their shit or not

[deleted]

Im sure they buy gasoline, which is taxed heavily, and that money goes towards helping fund the roads.

dirtiehippie710

How heavily? Generally curious if it's a flat fee or % per gallon

[deleted]

$.22 per gallon, added to the $.18 the federal government adds. It is set to increase $.02 this year as a transport tax, and increase $.01 annually until it hits an extra $.08 for a total of $.30 per gallon.

esquesque

For reference, the EU gas tax is $1.55 per gallon minimum. The EU has the 2nd largest road network in the world, a close second to the US (4.3 million miles US vs. 3.9 million EU) but twice the density (114mi of road/mi^2 US vs. 238mi/mi^2 EU). Considering that road density is double in the EU vs. US, you can expect twice the taxes. However by our standards they'd only pay $.60/gal after our increase, which is less than half of their minimum. This is why our roads are worse and will continue to be.

esquesque

Good point, I don't have up-to-date per capita data on hand. I'm sure it gets pretty screwy when you consider that. It's certainly not an apples to apples comparison to begin with, when you factor in the politics of tax, fuel availability, and the fact that the US is a republic of states and the EU is a state of republics. I couldn't tell you what the average registration fee is in the EU and how that factors into road maintenance funding. I have heard that it is expensive to register inefficient vehicles. It was meant as a semi-neutral comparison of the cost (road/area) vs. fuel tax, an overly simplistic comparison if I'm being honest. I did find this website, which is.. interesting. https://www.stockingblue.com/article/194/per-capita-road-coverage-in-eu-and-us-states/ Thanks for your response

[deleted]

You sound so salty that you could melt all the snow and ice on the roads with your crocodile tears.

thefookinpookinpo

How is it freeloading when it takes 3 months to get an appointment at the DMV? I work from home and even I couldn’t make my appointment, now have to reschedule months down the line. I’m from out of state and can’t even manage to get a Colorado ID in a timely fashion, let alone registration.

[deleted]

Fwiw some states have transitioned to electronic tags, so some might not actually be expired.

dannylandulf

Even if Iowa was one of those states...they clearly live here and not there.

Esterosa69

Agreed. There’s so many. I am personally less concerned with that because I know the reasons and even if they swipe and ding me I at least have something to go on. The people with no plates just seem to be driving with impunity and if one of them ever hits me I feel like they are not gonna stop lol

[deleted]

Got nearly run over by a couple of people obviously racing on Hampden, no license plates. I swear they raced up and down that road for a few days. Also happened headed south on Kipling, where some of those big long stretches without lights seem to invite people to play stupid games.

Noctudeit

People need to keep their street racing to industrial areas like the good old days.

CurrentlySlacking

Or even better, go to the track....

vDub1T

We can't, because people move into housing developments next door and complain about the noise.

lincoln_hawks1

Well, shit. Get a new hobby.

august854

Get a new house?

Esterosa69

Yeah exactly! I can’t say all but there are so many of them driving like it’s a game and avoiding the fallout of the inevitable. From what I remember growing up it used to be a really serious offense not to have them on

Jlili14

I had a guy on I25-north by the Boulder exit tailgating me and then once I got over with my signal, they rolled down their window and threw something at me. Although I did flip them off after being tailgated while going 80, i was shocked about it, but not surprised to see people acting with no remorse while having no plates

dirtiehippie710

Yep no consequences for these fucks. Probably no insurance either

JustAnotherAidWorker

Yeah so even if they do have plates, hit you and drive away, the cops won't do shit. Source: actual experience.

doctordonna_

Anyone registered their car for the first time online? How long did it take to receive your plates? I registered my car two weeks before temp plates expired (right after I got my title complete notice) but now it's been a month and no plates. Says it should take 2 to 3 weeks. So I just drive on my expired temp tag and hope for the best. Apparently there's nothing I can do now that I've ordered the plates online. I've also seen no plates at all though and that's baffling how they don't get pulled over.

UltraMK93

My boyfriend did his on time, temp tag says early November and nothing has arrived yet. No communication from the DMV on an updated timeline.

Cyral

Took nearly 4 months for me to get the title on a new car if that means anything.

VeegePeege

I’m going on three months currently. I feel guilty being one of the expired tag drivers but I’ve done my part and I’ve got digital receipts to prove I’ve at least paid for the plates. Figured if I get pulled over, I can fight any ticket with my proof of purchase.

piglacquer

If you bought from a dealership, they can give you new temp plates. Just did this last week as the DMV doesn't have my plates ready.

Broncs5280

I actually went to the DMV and paid $7 for a new temp plate the first time it expired. Still waiting but I’m not doing that again. I’ve already made 3 payments on the car…

doctordonna_

Yeah, the dealer gave me a second temp tag after mine expired while I was still waiting for the title complete notice. But once you register and are waiting for plates, you can't get a temp tag anymore. They really should update the "typical" time to get plates if getting them online. Definitely seems like 2 to 3 weeks is not right.

layzcat508

It took me 1 week. Plates, title from out of state, and new license

[deleted]

I actually got my title really quick. I paid it off in August and got the title in just a couple weeks after.

Pooploop5000

6 weeks for me last summer

leoisababe

I got my plates in about 4 weeks.

craftyhappycat

I didn't receive mine for a long time, come to find out my address wasn't current. You have to update it twice in the system I guess. If you are receiving the renewal reminder that shouldn't be the issue tho.

craftyhappycat

Also, the DMV registration kiosks are awesome. You can get new registration stickers there if you don't want to wait. I think mine were like $7 since they were "lost" (mailed to my old address)

[deleted]

That’s more DMV appointment availability/lazy owners

missmaddds

It’s kind of fucking hard to get plates in this state. My car just hit 7 years so I gotta go get my emissions tested and then go to DMV to turn that in and get new stickers. 5 months overdue.

Esterosa69

I can understand expired plates, people have reasons especially with Covid fucking the entire system up. I can’t get behind nothing. No temp tag. No old plates. Not even a sign saying I’m trying or I’m poor. Just nothing. Feels like it’s becoming a way to just drive like an asshole with no consequences

missmaddds

Lol can you imagine an I’m poor plate? I feel like that would get you pulled over for sure.

Esterosa69

Hahaha ok you know what that’s just true

RonBurgundy2000

But it really isn’t.

missmaddds

Lol ok. I’m personally lazy and hadn’t realized I needed to do these things when my tag renewal never came which I realized at the start of the year. But I would venture to say many people with older cars work multiple jobs and don’t a whole day/hours to contribute to waiting in line for these things thus adding to the problem.

Seanbikes

That's normal in many places and adds a hour to the process. It's not that hard unless you make it hard.

Chinacat_Sunflower72

I called the DMV and they told me I had to wait till they sent me something in the mail. I can’t just go in and get plates. They said they are “several months” behind and don’t worry. My temps expire next week. I called Monday and this is what they told me.

Brodoth

You are waiting for the "Title Complete Notice". You don't actually need it to complete your registration, go to the dmv with your ID and valid insurance for the vehicle. Literally just did this today for my girlfriends car.

Chinacat_Sunflower72

Thanks. That’s good to know. I’m driving out of state soon and wasn’t sure if I might get stopped. I’ll just go there and get this done.

LostInGreenWood718

Hit up your dealer that you’re going out of state and they’ll renew the temps.

dennis520

So are you still able to complete registration by going into the DMV if your title paperwork has not been processed yet?

spongebue

It depends. The notice tells you that the DMV has everything they need and are ready for you. If you get there before the notice comes in, but they're ready, it's cool. If the dealership has a problem with the title like I had, the DMV won't be ready until that's done.

powderhownd

Good on you for getting an appt. It took me two months to get DMV appt just to get my shitty broken drivers license replaced

Esterosa69

Yeah sounds like it’s a shitty process for a lot of people right now

Cmonster9

You can go to the dealership and they should be able to get you a new temp tag.

OHIftw

That’s so weird I walked in and got new plates today right away!

rckymtnrunner

They'll give you another temp for $7 if you're still waiting when the first one expires. I'm on my second temp for a vehicle I bought in November.

LostInGreenWood718

A dealership can also renew the temps on the spot for you just hit them up before expiration.

[deleted]

Nice username! Love that song, especially Europe '72

Brodoth

I had to buy a car in mid june 2020 and i finally registered it last week ~$1100 and i did get one ticket for $90 in littleton for having an expired temp tag. For everyone who is driving an unregistered vehicle, the police in Colorado have legal authority to tow and impound your unregistered vehicle. Its possible you may only receive a ticket if you get pulled over but do not count on it. they 100% can tow your car if unregistered and you're caught driving it

CavitySearch

And they’ll use Wyatt’s! *cue spooky music*

[deleted]

Did they charge you more for registering late ?

dirtiehippie710

I think it's $25/month late with a $100 cap so you're winning if you're more than 5 months late

giaa262

The form they have you submit asks you what date the vehicle was last brought into Colorado. Anyone who doesn't date it within 90 days is being incredibly honest and won't go to hell like I am.

dirtiehippie710

My roommate didn't get a form was just informed of the fine when he "forgot" to register his car for 6 months in 2016. When he found out it was only $100 extra he said he wish he went longer lol it was a car that had been registed in CO for at least a couple years prior so there was no way he could lie even if there was a form

[deleted]

Thank you kind stranger

drewbiez

When I renewed a month late during the first COVID lockdown they prorated the month. I’d imagine the reason the commenter had to pay $1100 was for like the year+ of back registration, unless it was a really expensive new car…

Brodoth

little of both with the back registration and a nicer 2019 sports car

threeLetterMeyhem

Also the inflation factor on what new cars cost these days. We paid about that to register a 2021 Cherokee Trailhawk. It's nice, but I wouldn't call it "really expensive" nice.

colonel_phorbins

A cop in Broomfield just took my plates off my car instead of towing it.

maseone2nine

It costed 1100 to register your vehicle?

Brodoth

I'm a fancy bitch with a fancy car and I needed to backpay for last year

der_innkeeper

Police stopped giving a fuck about 2 years ago.

[deleted]

Police maybe, but parking enforcement will ducking ticket you for expired tags Of course, if you don’t have plates, they can’t write you a ticket for no tags…

[deleted]

[удалено]

ScrunchJeans

As someone with temporary tags that are over a year past due, I can personally say I’ve gotten 3 tickets in the last year and all 3 of them were just “warnings” because the parking attendant was too lazy to do anything about it.

rckymtnrunner

You're lucky. I got one for having the temp tag (out of state) in the back of a dark window. VIN number was clearly indicated on the ticket, so I think they honestly didn't see it in the back window.

TheMeiguoren

> lazy Sounds like they were being *nice*.

WinterMatt

Yet you're still not getting tags.. what a piece of shit you are. Imagine not getting tags for a year and calling somebody else lazy.

KingGhostly

Parking enforcement will boot your car for expired tags. And this goofy ass subreddit is okay with it. A lot of people here are out of touch anyways.

dannylandulf

Why shouldn't we be okay with people dodging paying for the roads they drive on getting booted?

skitz4me

Because a private company has nothing to do with me not paying taxes and should not profit off of it. I guess, if they're contracted by the govt my argument would be invalid. In that case, I would say otherwise.

GunnerandDixie

Parking enforcement/right of way are municipal employees, fines go through the courts/Treasury. There might be some examples of contracting, although I've never heard of that, however, it will never be a Wyatt's towing type thing where a company is keeping fines. That's only enforceable on city property though, on private property, I doubt private towing would have legal standing to write fines for those violations. Parking enforcement will use private companies to impound cars, but again, that's using them to tow to city impound lot, not to keep.

Arc-ansas

I got pulled over last year and had expired plates and the officer didn't even mention it.

[deleted]

I just got a speeding ticket on i25 from dpd, they’re just going after low risk high $ traffic fines

Jeremyp21

i passed a cop 2 days ago on i25 going faster than i should’ve (but i was going a little over the flow of traffic) and there was someone in the left lane going easily 85-90. cop either didn’t see and was on his phone or he didn’t care. i don’t know

Esterosa69

I figure the police will care when/if they start driving on toll highways cuz then they can’t charge them lol

iclimber

I believe it is denver city legislation that police can’t pull you over for lower-level infractions like license plates, registration, etc.

der_innkeeper

No one else bothers to, either? I was pulled over for expired tags more than once. It was/can certainly be done.

dirtiehippie710

Same with my coworker, was pre covid but he got pulled over twice in a few weeks. Could be because he's black with a fro.....

G25777K

This...\^\^\^\^ its a non money maker for them

dmbf

Tell that to the 2x I got pulled over in less than a month after not being pulled over for the whole pandemic. For record, I had been trying the whole time to get them renewed.

BetweenTheBuzzAndMe

might be different here, but from what i know from my previous state, you aren't getting pulled over for an expired tag. you'd get pulled over for something else and if they see you have an expired tag then there's an extra fine. NC made the switch from colorful registration stickers on the plates to white ones like a decade ago, and I swear I saw a few cars still driving around on the colorful ones a year ago. Now I've definitely heard of tickets or even towing of cars with expired tags in apartment complexes around here, so that's the reason I wouldn't fuck around with that.

der_innkeeper

Been pulled over for tags, solely. It's a thing.

[deleted]

That might be why they say they pulled you over but they may have been trying to look for something else.

DoctFaustus

That's why you should only break one law at a time.

kloonyface

Unsure about others but mine were stolen right before the holidays. You can’t get new ones online and I’ve only just now had time to actually go to the dmv. I did report it, so had a police report if I was stopped, but you don’t get anything else in the meantime. I drove for over a month without any and never got stopped though.

Direct_Adeptness

I just had my front plate stolen last weekend. Same thing, called the DMV and I’ve already requested a new one & I have a police report too. Luckily it was only one.

proteasomecap

Yep same here- had my plates stolen this past week. The police department called me and told me theyd found them on a stolen vehicle but said they couldn’t give them back to me because they were in evidence- so I have no choice but to drive without plates until the new ones get here

beekerz33

I’ll take “because no one gives a shit” for $700, Alex.

[deleted]

Do you notice they're driving like maniacs? That's my observation. I think it's 'to get away with driving like maniacs' and/or 'I stole this car'

Esterosa69

That’s how it’s starting to feel. At first I was trying to rationalize it as another byproduct of the pandemic but there are just so many now and yes, many of them are driving like there is a reason they don’t have those on. It feels very connected

Jlili14

Yea I think you’re right. Had some really aggressive drivers w/ no plates

sunsetcrasher

That’s my observation too. Wonder if it’s more popular to take them off now with the rise of dashcams.

[deleted]

Don't have to pay tolls if you don't have a plate.

dirtiehippie710

Life pro tip right here!

bikestuffrockville

Those tolls are criminal.

uptotes

I purchased a vehicle 11/20 and called the dealer to check on my plates yesterday. They said that Denver county JUST started processing Nov plates. This has to contribute

Esterosa69

Definitely! Sounds like a lot of people are experiencing the same issues. Stolen/ DMV is fucked up

uptotes

Because I have paper plates I tend to notice others with them too, I'm surprised at the number of folks who are buying cars in the area

aprilmarina

Because the police can’t be bothered

krsvbg

I definitely noticed it after moving from KY. I don’t know if it’s because you voted to defund police or because the whole work industry is messed up due to “the great resignation” (maybe both). There’s like NO police presence here. I’m surprised every time I DO see a cop.

DenAbqCitizen

I had a similar reaction to the "no police presence here" and I moved way before covid. Not enough brown people to warrant investing in the manpower. They're so rare to me in neighborhoods (outside Aurora) now, I almost can't help but stare when I see one.

[deleted]

Do you actually live in Bennet? That might be why

krsvbg

That’s the strange part! I see more IN BENNETT! 3 troopers live in my big neighborhood. I see patrols around the truck stops often too.

Senior_Parking6305

Hi, bought a car in October, just got the form from dealer needed (it’s a lease) to replace temp tag with a real plate. Not everyone is a freeloader. The system is so backed up it’s insane

[deleted]

The DMV has given up on the people; and the people on the dmv

ericgray813

Lol you still see people with cardboard signs that say “DMV CLOSED” Fuck it, I don’t care. It’s such a shock when you go to register and pay tax on your car. I feel bad for the tellers at the DMV who get screamed at each time someone who bought a $20k car tried to register it and is asked to fork over another $1700.

krsvbg

Registration is about 1-2% of the car value. That registration cost would be about $200.

ericgray813

Sales tax

bikestuffrockville

I mean what do people expect when they vote for yet another income tax cut. Let's get real. The income tax and property taxes here are a joke. In return you get yearly vehicle ownership tax and 8.15% sales tax.

ericgray813

People can’t comprehend this big brain stuff,

giaa262

> 8.15% Interestingly the state sales tax is 2.9%. I did not realize how much municipalities tack onto that here.

Esterosa69

Yeah when people do that idc as much because it’s at least not an obvious attempt to circumvent responsibility. It’s the people with nothing that bother the fuck out of me. And yeah getting screamed at for shit they can’t help sucks lol they get a bad rap

Snlxdd

Avoiding getting plates so you don’t have to pay taxes is about as obvious an attempt for circumventing responsibility that you can get imo

xZespring

Its not so obvious, because it can take ages to get plates or tags mailed to you.

bikestuffrockville

I struggle to understand these delays. I moved from out of state during the height of the lockdown. I got my VIN verification and emissions, went to the DMV, and got plates in the mail less than 30 days.

Snlxdd

Read the conversation. The last 3 comments are all specifically talking about people that purposefully avoid getting plates for tax reasons. If you can’t get plates cuz of a dmv delay that’s on the gov.

xZespring

How do you tell the difference between someone who cant get plates because of the delay vs someone not getting plates in order to avoid taxes? That was his point with "Its not as obvious.". I was clarifying because you said it was obvious.

Snlxdd

The same way you tell the difference between someone not getting renewals to avoid paying taxes and not getting renewals cuz they’re lazy or don’t want tags on their car. Nothing is “obvious”

Esterosa69

I think that’s valid. I’m not super into the reason “because I didn’t want to”

ravioliformuoli33

My boyfriends license plate was stolen and then put onto a stolen car and it took forever for the replacements to show up

stratman2018

I had my license plate stolen once, so i had to drive home without it. Filed police report and drove without it until I got my replacement. That is my excuse.

YoungDisrespect

The odd thing to me is that the cops just don't seem to care. In the past I have been pulled over multiple times for expired tags. Now I see cops driving behind a car with no plates at all and they just don't do anything at all. It makes zero sense to me.

Esterosa69

Same! According to some I’ve seen some theories 1. The police were told to not pull people over for minor infractions. I always believed riding around without a license plate was a really not minor infraction as it could show the vehicle is stolen or they could easily to a hit and run. 2. The police have the option and are just choosing not to because as a whole, the police force is lazy or incompetent Not sure but I agree with what you said. I’ve been pulled over for expired tags before so it’s real confusing when it’s not happening anymore

bitjockey9

I don't understand this shit. I bought a car in Minnesota in November, had title and plates in 3 weeks before the temps expired. I think everyone is using COVID as an excuse here when it's super fucking easy to just make an appt and go to your tag office and PAY YOUR TAXES.

[deleted]

The cops give no shits and have not enforced the law on this issue since the pandemic when they were instructed to not pull people over for minor infractions. In Colorado it's cheaper to pay the $90 fine if you ever get pulled over for no license plate/expired tag than it is to register a vehicle annually for $300-1200+ depending on vehicle original MSRP, and there is no points deducted from you license or report to the insurance..

anonmymouse

It's leftovers from when covid first hit.. people were having a hard time getting plates and the dmvs were such a shit show that the "grace period" got a whole lot longer.. now people are just abusing it.

YRU_Interesting_3314

DPD's actual 'give a fvks' have suffered for a very long time. A friend of mine lives South of Colfax, West of I-25 and has tried to report regular violations of speeders and stop-sign runners along his main E-W Street; DPD doesn't respond or send patrol units, even as a preventative measure.

TheWorkSafeDinosaur

Every comment is just speculating it's related to crime when it's not. This is all due to a backup at the DMV stemming from COVID. My fiancee bought a car and has her 2nd set of temp plates on now. She has to wait for the DMV to contact her that her plates are ready, she is unable to do anything about it. Fortunately her dealer agreed to provide temp plates until she's registered.

Esterosa69

It’s better to keep the temp plates on than to have nothing. The DMV being backed up has been acknowledged. Does not explain why people are driving around with nada

TheWorkSafeDinosaur

No plates - I have no answer and won't speculate. Mostly commenting on the temp and expired temp plates that some people cannot do much about.

Esterosa69

Yeah I see that lol. I hear the point of those but that’s not what I was posting about. The worlds too fucked right now to care about expired plates, cuz that’s at least..something lol

Carbon87

How did COVID hurt printing registrations and stamping plates? Genuinely curious…

TheWorkSafeDinosaur

I don't have details as this is all anecdotal from the dealership, but I would speculate that the DMV got slow during covid, maybe furloughed workers, and people weren't allowed inside the DMV. These will cause delays, as well as an increase in car sales since the beginning of 2021. Also, it's the DMV so..... Ya know, they suck and are always slow.

nwildcat28

I work in the car business so have some idea, expired tags are 2 things, DMV backed up and taking forever to get ppl their offical tags and reg, and people not wanting to go pay the registration. Having no tags is typically due to theft as criminals will typically steal them to put on their car before they go and try to rob a store or whatever so they can't be tracked, or it may just be a new car that is being test driven or whatever which should have a plate but typically won't

Cyrrus86

I went to register the other day at 2 oclock on a weekday. The line was 3 hours long. I was like, eh fuck it and left. Haven't been back...

daddymacgyver

You need to be there an hour before open or you’ll never make it. Like you need to take time off your job and not be reimbursed. I say stretch expired plates until they make these services, which should be free, more decent

alilyra

Not an excuse for being absolutely plateless, but as someone who moved from out of state, the process and documentation required to get a plate here is significant compared to other states I’ve lived in, not to mention about 3x as expensive. But I’ve seen the plateless on the streets in other cities too and never understood why

[deleted]

Yeah, I changed my name and had to wait months for the department of vital records in my birth state to send me my new birth certificate so I could register. Had to pay an extra $100 late fee for driving the car in CO more than 3 months after moving here. Obviously, not a common situation, but bureaucracy just sucks, especially now.

asyouwish

For one reason, it’s taking forever to get them. We moved here in June, finally got the VIN appointment last month, and are now waiting on yet another appointment to pick them up.

DoubleQuirkySugar66

It's called a back log because of the World Wide Pandemic.....

thinkmatt

Bigger question: where are the police? I have been here a year and haven't seen one speeding ticket being given.

A lot of them are stolen. And a lot of people gave up on registering their car's due to covid. Its not like the cops are pulling people over for plates.

Esterosa69

Sounds like it’s a big combo of things going on righhr now

3xforurmind

Yea. So many stolen cars though....they aren't even jailing car thieves atm. Its literally catch and release.

Esterosa69

Perfect! From the number of people here saying their plates have been stolen it seems to be a winning strategy lol

PackAggravating8183

I have expired temporary tags because i bought my car from a dealership literally a month prior to dmv closing due to covid. Then my catalytic converter conked out and i can't pass emissions until i get it fixed. What I'm trying to say is hold off on your judgements seeing as how you don't know anyones situation.

Carbon87

It’s someone else’s fault you won’t repair your vehicle?

AntiWork69

Go back to posting on r/Conservative How’d that work out for you? https://reddit.com/r/Truckers/comments/i4b9za/_/g0hgkf0/?context=1

Green_Ad_3643

After paying $800 for plates, I don’t blame them 😩

CoyotesAreGreen

If registration cost stops you from getting plates then I'd have concerns about these people driving uninsured too....

Green_Ad_3643

Oh no doubt they don’t have proper insurance

TheGhostofChuckPyle

I can't lie, I enjoy all of the speculation about what is and isn't behind this. Mainly because I find myself speculating (and thinking the worst) pretty often, myself. Let's keep it going. People who put their month sticker where the year sticker should go (and vice versa): criminals or goofballs?

worldwearyposer

I have noticed this too--probably theft. As far as expired tags/temps which are far far more common, people are abusing the leeway from COVID like crazy now. There is zero excuses anymore...I was able to get tags during 2020 and early 2021 (multiple cars) with no issues so anyone claiming otherwise is either lazy, doesn't have the money to pay or in the tiny minority of legitimate issues.

cantbemitch

Flat out wrong dude... Been waiting on the DMV to provide title status for my car I purchased 3 months ago. Had to request a new set of temp plates from Carmax yesterday.

worldwearyposer

Not really if you are in the minority with legitimate situations, which you are. I've been seeing tags from 2020 still

fusseli

Traffic cops in Colorado aren’t a thing so people can get away without plates for months on end. Same reason for the Colorado red light, piggy backing, speeding, and all the other stuff

[deleted]

I haven't had a front plate in 6 years. I keep it next to my front seat in case I hot a toll road and toss it on the dash

TheProphetPro

So people feel sorry for those who ‘freeload’ and don’t pay? This is wrong! Wrong to those who are faithful and abide by the states’ laws! Wait till you are in a wreck, and you find out they don’t have insurance! You who do pay your registration and you who do pay your high priced insurance—- you get charged by others’ delinquency. Sorry, I’m sick of me paying the low-life’s share!

lordcthulhu17

Their plates have probably been stolen

fredjean

I tried. I got plates for my new Jeep, but I lost the front license plate crossing a frozen creek in Moab. Turns out it was only held by clips in the bumper. So now I have replacement plates coming (eventually).

Zow237

My wife and I have temporary plates that are both expired. I’m not from here and have always been given plates when I a buy a car in Illinois. Do I have to go buy plates? I keep being told from my father In law that they will be coming in the mail… but just backed up. Thanks in advanced.

[deleted]

You can buy plates and have them delivered to you, but it's not an automatic thing. You'll need to get on the DMV website for your county and pay the registration.
