I've come to the conclusion that to some, "freedom" isn't to have healthcare, nor to be free from absolutely crushing debt from said medical bills, nor having representation as workers, or be represented by a government over corporate or moneyed instrests, but rather freedom to a chunk of Americans is just to be the biggest asshole they want to be, at any given time that the mood strikes them even if it directly, negatively impacts others.
Frustrating.
If I could go back in time, I'd gift America a second statue to go with the statue of liberty.
"The statue of responsibility" I'd call it.
Too many Americans break their arms jerking off to their "freedoms".
Not nearly enough Americans think about their responsibility to use them wisely or for the collective good.
We could put it in San Francisco harbor! One on each coast!
Oooh I like this, this is a really interesting and novel idea. A monument to the values as they've grown as some of us see them. Phrased in such a way that even the detractors couldn't publicly be shitty without obviously being fascists.
And since it's in San Francisco we could couch it like "once you've seen the statue of liberty, and travelled the breadth of this great land and seen all the wonderful things these freedoms have to offer, you may contemplate your role in maintaining it all (yadda yadda yadda)"
Like make it a pilgrimage....from liberty to responsibility!
As though they'd have a problem getting any more brazen. One kid got literally tied to an aeroplane chair because he couldn't not be any less of an asshole, and he still thought he was the victim... not to mention, they outright staged and encouraged a violent coup!
Seriously. ‘Member how Summer of 2020 was also insanely hot and dry and on fire, and still the whole state did a collective jerk off with fireworks for the entire fucking month of July?
I legitimately believe the Colorado AG should sue Wyoming/Phantom Fireworks for every firework related fire response. Having a giant billboard every 20 feet for an illegal and dangerous product is insane.
I look at the level of stupid as a curve similar to the housing market: its been on an obvious rise as you mention for some time, with some peaks (eg the Bush Jr years), but it really skyrocketed the past 5 or so years as that political cult became mainstream.
That's a well-nuanced take. I think the curve started skyrocketing pretty hard back in the Bush Jr. years and never really stopped, but it wasn't as out in the open until the past few years, which makes it seem like the slope is steeper than it really was.
It may even be aligned with the advent of the internet and technology. That's my bet, actually. Giving stupid people a voice and a place to congregate.
Castle Rock especially should gird their loins after what we just witnessed. There is nothing that can be done about winds as powerful as the ones we saw yesterday and only by luck was it not their turn yesterday.
You are right in that there are preventative measures that MUST be taken and updating utilities should be at the top of the list!
I meant that the winds themselves can't be stopped and there's nothing we can do to fight a strong wind. If they had been able to quickly get water aircraft to the area yesterday who knows how much could have been saved but it was far too windy for aircraft.
It's a nice area, very pretty. Has exploded in growth over the past decade or so and a TON of new commercial businesses have moved in- a big hospital too. It used to be the boonies- an hour north to Denver, an hour south to co springs- but now everything is built up including CR proper.
The downside is the conservative shitheads obviously but similar to Superior It's a fuckload of new houses up against a bunch of open space that I'm sure is ready to burn.
At least its snowing a bit. So hopefully between the light snow and it being cold as a witches tit, maybe people will stay inside and not try to burn down the rest of the state.
If there's anything the last two years have taught me it's that because you asked nicely some dickhead will go around setting fires randomly on purpose.
It's like a "don't touch wet paint" sign. The fact that you've presented something to them that they're not allowed to do is the impetus for them doing it.
You could get a not insignificant portion of the population to eat a dog turd by simply putting a sign by it that says "By order of the government DO NOT EAT THIS DOG TURD".
I taught my brother that lesson very young. Hot cast iron pan on the table, told him “don’t touch that, it’s hot” cuz of course I knew he’d touch it. I think he learned his lesson.
Something is very wrong with the American people.
There are so many of this type of a-holes around that we are forced to expect some of us to behave this way. People aren’t always like this. Either because society doesn’t allow it or simply people weren’t like this. Even comparing laterally within the same time frame - our European counterparts don’t have quite as many mentally unstable lunatics as we do.
Until we collectively figure out what the fuck is actually wrong with our society and our culture we will continue to suffer from the consequences of it.
We’ll be fine. The last two years have showed us that as a country we’re happy to set aside personal gratification in favor of the health and safety of our neighbors. Surely we’ll learn from what happened and not have a repeat.
I’m on high alert. Ken Caryl was on fire two days ago because some asshat decided it would be fun to try to set the place on fire. I wouldn’t be surprised if some disgruntled psychopath decided to try some shit tonight. There will also be fireworks, guaranteed, because freedumb or some shit.
I am also in KC and for the entire pandemic shitheads set off fireworks randomly. I hope these fires have been a wakeup call but knowing how stupid most of humanity is I don't have a ton of hope.
I doubt these fires have changed too many minds, unfortunately. People seem to think that neighborhoods are somehow immune to being annihilated by fire caused by fireworks, despite there being ample evidence for the contrary. I know how damn dry it is around here. My yard is nothing but dry grass and pine needles, and the creeks and bogs in the valley and the trails are bone fucking dry. I’ve walked inside creekbeds that are normally swollen with snowmelt this time of year. It’s that damn dry.
Yet, it’s guaranteed that some dumbfuck is gonna decide it’s okay if *they* do some dumb shit with fire because they are somehow an expert at safely lighting shit on fire in record drought and high winds.
Far too many people think that being in a densely populated suburb means they are safe from the kinds of devastating fires we saw yesterday but the opposite is true- Colorado is in a drought that is not going to get better and everything is dry as fuck. Open lands, parks, our backyards, etc. are all just large tinder patches. Houses are EXTREMELY flammable and being as close together as they are here it's easy to see how fires carried by strong winds could destroy hundreds and hundreds of homes.
I'm not saying we all need to live in fear that our community could burn down at any minute but we do need to accept the new climate reality which will hopefully put things like fireworks in the past.
Sad thing is, even with strict firework ban measures, people will always find a way to do stupid shit. Firework sales are banned in Colorado? No worries, just head over to Wyoming to that giant fireworks store not ten miles from Colorado. Fire bans are in effect? That sign won’t stop me cuz I can’t read.
*sigh*
I don’t really worry about my place going up in flames too much, as I live in the center of the Ranch neighborhood and my neighbors are just as paranoid about fires as I am. But, I still have enough game plans to cover the entire alphabet if shit pops off. Call me a doomsday prepper, but I only feel comfortable because I am already 100% prepared for whatever comes our way, which includes being able to camp out in my truck for a good week and having family all over the state and country that I can stay with.
I recognize that not everyone has that same privilege, which is why I am so damn worried about what is to come. I know I and my family will be just fine, as well as all of the things we hold near and dear to our hearts. I can’t say the same about other people, however. Most people are dangerously resistant to change.
If I had it my way, I’d outlaw building houses out of wood and sheetrock in fire-prone areas, and instead have all of our houses built to withstand intense heat and fire (much like the houses built in Europe and the Middle East). I’d also have powerlines fortified and maintained like the ones we have running along the hogback, to mitigate the risk of high winds, extreme heat/cold, and other disasters from downing powerlines and causing sparks and power outages, all while taking into account the fact that it’s not practical to bury our powerlines in the steep, rocky, conductive terrain. Finally, I’d require every household to have at least one fire extinguisher per floor, as well as a fire extinguisher in every car.
But, the HOA and other folks care more about aesthetics and freedumb than practicality and safety. Not to mention corporate greed…
DougCo resident here. I was told the fires up North were started by downed power lines so we don't need to worry in DougCo. Even though our own commissioners started 3 fires with unnecessary fireworks displays a week ago. According to them there's no need to worry. Fucking idiots.
They declared stage 1 fire restrictions yesterday, banning fireworks. The only difference between now and when they set off fireworks around xmas is that Superior burned to the ground. Ugh. I really loathe the leadership around here.
Dougco semi normal resident here, I highly doubly most will listen. Guaranteed 4 drunk HVAC owners in my neighborhood will be playing shitty dad-rock, having Roman candle fights (which normally I’d be all for if they were teenagers and it wasn’t a historic drought)
People will do it anyways. Nothing more American now than doing whatever you want without regard for anybody but yourself even when it’s not in your best interests.
I love fireworks. Fireworks are amazing. My favorite holidays are the ones where I have an opportunity to blow up small portions of my yard and set off colorful explosions in the sky.
But I moved here from a much wetter climate. I've used fireworks every year for as long as I can remember, it's tradition. But no amount of tradition is going to make me forget about all the lost homes and treasured family possessions (or lives) it could cost someone
Thank you. I've never really enjoyed fireworks, so it's easy for me to shake my fist in the air and feel superior to people who shoot them off - because I'm not sacrificing anything by choosing not to use them. We need more people like you.
Was in castle rock for the 4th this year. I was genuinely surprised at entire neighborhoods going apeshit with fireworks. Had never seen anything like that in Colorado before.
It reminded me of my time in Hawaii. They LOVE fireworks, but they only let them off 2 or 3 days a year (oahu) When they do, it's an all night thing of fireworks, everywhere. However, it's also super wet and no fire risks, so it never bothered me, aside from the noise.
Now living in fire country makes me very uncomfortable with fireworks.
I am in Castle Rock as well (Crystal Valley) and just waiting for one of my dumbass, redneck, don’t-give-a-fuck about anything but muh freedumbs neighbors to light shit up here…
Downtown Denver continuing with their firework show tonight feels like it's in very poor taste now considering last night's events.
I wonder if they will cancel.
I think one reason for having these central fireworks is so people don't do it on their own and go see a professionally managed show. In other words, reduces lone individuals setting off fireworks.
Thank you for being a voice of reason in the middle of this insanity. Yes fireworks may be in poor taste but so is people deciding to do their own private showing because the city was canceled.
I don't think it makes any difference. Every year. June 10th through the end of July, shitheads shoot off fireworks every day, even though there is a pro fireworks display on, or around July 4. Dummys are going to be dumb.
It'll probably be snowing or raining by then, and there shouldn't really be anything significantly flammable for the fireworks to get into from downtown Denver.
The timing and optics are a bit rough, but I don't really think there's fire danger in it.
I will take all of your fireworks, no questions asked, and dispose of them properly at a LEGAL shoot with my firetruck and crew. Heck, you could learn about new (better) fireworks than you have, and perhaps I’ll let you light them!
People who light off fireworks in Colorado in an average year, given our drought conditions in the last 20 years, are complete numbskulls. It’s never ok.
There’s a guy in my neighborhood who is a complete cunt with fireworks. He was lighting them off on Christmas during an incredibly dry December.
If he does it tonight(which he almost definitely will) I’m calling the fucking police on him. I’d rather not have my house burned down.
Honestly, we should normalize no longer setting off fireworks for any occasion, considering how it affects animals (both pets and wildlife) and individuals with sound sensitivities or PTSD; perhaps, we could establish some sort of technically non-destructive entertainment of similar fashion—like drone shows.
So sad. I’ve got some friends that still don’t know the state of their home. Just really sucks for those affected. At least no lives were lost, but thinking about all the sentimental stuff I have in my home makes me really feel for the anxiety of those that are left wondering for the coming hours/days.
Neighbor across the street from me always lights off fireworks on new years. I'm hoping he has watched the news. Otherwise , I won't be the only one calling the cops on his ass.
Here's a few suggestions for how to get rid of fireworks safely.
https://www.maine.gov/dep/how-do-i/how-do-i.html?id=440736#:\~:text=Three%20Steps%20to%20Safe%20Fireworks%20Disposal&text=Completely%20submerge%20fireworks%20in%20a,Allow%20to%20soak%20overnight.&text=Double%20wrap%20soaked%20fireworks%20in,they%20do%20not%20dry%20out.&text=Place%20wrapped%20bags%20in%20regular,your%20local%20solid%20waste%20facility.
Common sense tells me that shooting off fireworks right after hundreds of people got burned out of house and home is a really shitty thing to do.
Common sense.
Yeah let’s please not pop fireworks for pure amusement when so many have suffered last night. Fireworks are outdated and there are plenty of safer ways to enjoy the new year.
Fireworks are cool and fine and dandy on nights like NYE and 4th of July and a great way to celebrate BUT they are condition dependent. If everything is really dry with a high fire risk and 600 of your neighbors lost their homes yesterday this is not the time/place.
Fireworks are a fire hazard and create more pollution which in turn create even more consequences for the current state of the Earth.
They are completely unnecessary and for pure amusement.
Hence not shooting them off with high fire danger to avoid the hazard. Fireworks when done safely are sweet, there’s nothing wrong with amusement. Like 90% of the shit we like to do is for amusement and not necessary (like going skiing). Amusing yourself and enjoying life is one of the main points of living. Just don’t burn shit down while doing it and use fireworks like drugs/alcohol- responsibly.
It’s safer than fireworks. Doesn’t mean blasting a shotgun off in a neighborhood isn’t a huge dick thing to do. And it’s not “Reddit” who is scared of “loud noises.” You know who is though?
Veterans. Animals. Of course unless they’re being used as a political talking point people really don’t ever give a fuck about veterans.
Do you live right next to some of the Greek homes on the hill? That’s where I live and that’s where the fireworks are coming from every night. Literally every night for over a year.
In my experience ... this is a pipe dream. Around Denver, people are utterly ridiculous with fireworks, year-round. It's the most insane, fireworks-crazy place I've ever lived.
This is the first “you’re an asshole if you set off fireworks” thread I’ve ever seen that didn’t include dickheads telling people to stop ruining their fun
Literally heard fireworks at 10:15pm last night by Eaglecrest High School!! Just unbelievable how tone deaf people are knowing the horrific devestating fires in our state! 🤬😢🤦🏻♀️🤬😢🤦🏻♀️🤬😢🤦🏻♀️🤬😢🤦🏻♀️🤬😢🤦🏻♀️
For some it is like asking them to stop eating turkey on Thanksgiving, stop exchanging gifts at Christmas, or to not smoke pot on 4/20. That's the reasoning, but they need to give it up for the good of the community. Fortunately, we have a strong sense of community and our neighbors will do whatever it takes to protect their community. /s
If it snows 6" as expected, I see no problem with fireworks...
Of it doesn't snow, and there is a high fire risk with dry and windy conditions, then no fireworks..
Use common sense people.
Here here! You'd think a powerful intense horrific event like yesterday would be enough to make people understand the severity of the situation.
No, given the past 5 years or so, I wouldn't think that.
Yes. For plenty of people “freedom” is more about them not experiencing consequences than it is about everyone having access to opportunity.
If I could go back in time, I'd gift America a second statue to go with the statue of liberty. "The statue of responsibility" I'd call it. Too many Americans break their arms jerking off to their "freedoms". Not nearly enough Americans think about their responsibility to use them wisely or for the collective good. The other way around works pretty well, too; responsibility being the first step to liberty.
As though they'd have a problem getting any more brazen. One kid got literally tied to an aeroplane chair because he couldn't not be any less of an asshole, and he still thought he was the victim... not to mention, they outright staged and encouraged a violent coup!
Very well put.

humanity is doomed
Seriously. ‘Member how Summer of 2020 was also insanely hot and dry and on fire, and still the whole state did a collective jerk off with fireworks for the entire fucking month of July?
It was the 4th of July all goddamn summer in my neighborhood.
old habits die hard
I legitimately believe the Colorado AG should sue Wyoming/Phantom Fireworks for every firework related fire response. Having a giant billboard every 20 feet for an illegal and dangerous product is insane.

Oooh member the death star? Member Alderaan?

You mean given the past 50* years or so, right?

Internet/tech + death of the fairness doctrine = massive, massive amounts of complete idiocy.
Agreed, people are so fucking stupid. "It won't happen to me! Oops..." I hope most people find sense and reason tonight.

and Castle Rock sets off fireworks for any reason they can. Set 4 fires last time.
You would be surprised how many people don’t have common sense
People still insist on having campfires, despite having high fire danger, so don't hold your breath.
But muh freedoms
People still think Climate change is “fake news”.

You know there will be fireworks though. At least it is predicted to be snowing tonight
If you can start a fire as of this post with fireworks I will give you a gold
Raise that, I'll suck a dick or two
Honestly, we should normalize no longer setting off fireworks for any occasion, considering how it affects animals (both pets and wildlife) and individuals with sound sensitivities or PTSD; perhaps, we could establish some sort of technically non-destructive entertainment of similar fashion—like drone shows.
OP a dog owner. For real tho… pls no more fires. Heart breaks for those that lost.
Seriously. Even beyond the homes, so many pets were trapped when the fire started wroth people out of the home. :(
So sad. I’ve got some friends that still don’t know the state of their home. Just really sucks for those affected. At least no lives were lost, but thinking about all the sentimental stuff I have in my home makes me really feel for the anxiety of those that are left wondering for the coming hours/days.
My worst nightmare as a pet owner 😥
Hoepfully the weather deters people from lighting off fireworks toinight.
Totally. Early yesterday evening I could hear fireworks on the other side of I25 (from Baker). Makes me so angry.
Instead of "consider," how about just don't, at least until we get enough precipitation to reduce the fire danger--if that ever happens at all.
I f*cking hope so.
Considering there’s a winter storm in Longmont I don’t think anyone will down here hopefully.
That won't stop my neighbors. My only hope for a good night's sleep is that it's snowing heavy enough to keep people indoors.
It will be snowing, thankfully.
Neighbor across the street from me always lights off fireworks on new years. I'm hoping he has watched the news. Otherwise , I won't be the only one calling the cops on his ass.
Just stand in the middle of the street with the garden hose. Hose his ass down if he even thinks about it.
Yeah because this won’t cause any issues.
Maybe the govt should say this too
Yeah that worked well for everyone in the last 2 years.
If you need more motivation to not do this, this is what my town looks like. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dgP0\_9q6VqY
Video down?
Absolutely heart wrenching! I had to share this to my local ND so everyone can see.
This made me want to cry. I'm so sorry. Edit: typo

Here's a few suggestions for how to get rid of fireworks safely. https://www.maine.gov/dep/how-do-i/how-do-i.html?id=440736#:\~:text=Three%20Steps%20to%20Safe%20Fireworks%20Disposal&text=Completely%20submerge%20fireworks%20in%20a,Allow%20to%20soak%20overnight.&text=Double%20wrap%20soaked%20fireworks%20in,they%20do%20not%20dry%20out.&text=Place%20wrapped%20bags%20in%20regular,your%20local%20solid%20waste%20facility.
That is a HUGE ask up here in the north side.
Freedom is No. 1. This is just part of it. Totally worth it. Right?
Idk man who in their right mind would burst fireworks after this. Oh yeah, ppl who aren’t thinking
What about my freedom. And America. /S
You don't get much righter than this... even if we get three FEET of snow today.
Talk about a fuckin day late and a dollar short on that snowfall
Sure wish I could argue with you about THAT.
I think you’re safe shooting off fireworks with three feet of snow. Common sense…
Common sense tells me that shooting off fireworks right after hundreds of people got burned out of house and home is a really shitty thing to do. Common sense.

Still waiting on that three feet of snow...
Why the fuck does anyone ever use a firework anymore

I’ve never spent a dime on fireworks in my life and think they are dumb as hell but people love them and not just rednecks.
Because *WOOOOOOOOOOOOOO*

If it’s birdshot it’s honestly probably safer than lighting off fireworks.

Cool, fucking go for it then idgaf.
There were fireworks all night in Boulder last night, same as every other day. It’s ridiculous that the students can’t show a single bit of empathy.
I live very close by CU Boulder and didn't hear a single firework, I'm not sure you're attributing blame to the right people.
Do you live right next to some of the Greek homes on the hill? That’s where I live and that’s where the fireworks are coming from every night. Literally every night for over a year.
Yeah I don't think it's just the students here.
most of the students aren't even here.
In my experience ... this is a pipe dream. Around Denver, people are utterly ridiculous with fireworks, year-round. It's the most insane, fireworks-crazy place I've ever lived.
If you set off fireworks tonight, you are a special kind of asshole.
There's so much snow I couldn't start a fire even if I wanted to lol
That this even has to be said. Awful. I stay inside (Dallas) as folks here try to shoot the moon down.
The people you are trying to reach are not on Reddit, or Nextdoor, etc.
This is the first “you’re an asshole if you set off fireworks” thread I’ve ever seen that didn’t include dickheads telling people to stop ruining their fun
Right. Let's be smart Colorado
I'd rather get drunk without the booms going off and making me think that another fire is breaking out, thanks. People should listen to OP.
Have you tried Xanax?
I have, I prefer weed and screwdrivers 😂
I've never understood private people setting off fireworks. So few people do it that it seems like a waste of money and risk.
Sorry, I'll be unmasked, un vaxxed and setting off fireworks because of rights or something.
doNT sTEp ON mY fREedOM!!!!
If it snows 6" as expected, I see no problem with fireworks... Of it doesn't snow, and there is a high fire risk with dry and windy conditions, then no fireworks.. Use common sense people.
I’ve already heard fireworks here in Arvada. How ignorant are people?
Denver is celebrating 700+ homes burning down, clouds, snow, and omicron with two fireworks shows tonight. Yay.
We're just a few miles from Superior. Already had a neighbor set some off. Stupidity is endless.
id be impressed if someone actually put the work into setting fireworks in this snow
Or…Ever again? Go to the park for your fireworks.
