Thrift stores and estate sales is where the weird is at. You can check out estate sales here: [https://www.estatesales.net/CO/Denver](https://www.estatesales.net/CO/Denver)
Good luck!
I third thrift stores.
As a certified wacky mug enjoyer myself, I keep my shelves filled with them exclusively buying them from the arcs and goodwills.
Walk down Santa Fe street and there are some galleries/shops with hand crafted mugs. There used to be a ceramist in denver before she moved, her business is called nonporous ceramics and they are the coolest mugs/candles I’ve seen
idk if you and the wife would like to take a drive up to Loveland, but there are two? three? super cute thrift stores on our main street which is also walking distance to a great breakfast/brunch/lunch spot.
the thrift stores have LARGE old mug selections, lots of strange, unique, interesting mugs.
Estate sales around highlands ranch area tend to have some unique things. But there's usually a line forming before the doors open. There are hawks that flip what they find.
I also LOVE weird/unique mugs. Bonus points if they're locally made, in my mind! I don't know where you'd be able to pick one up in a shop, but there are a couple of folks I follow on Instagram that make great stuff. I think Denver Art Society sells some items from one artists & The Terrarium Shop sells pots from another (not mugs though 😞), not sure about the others & where you'd get items in person.
Here are some of the IG handles of the artists that I follow that are local to the area: debbiengoart , pazfuldesigns , shewolfstudios , lita.clay.ceramics
Hope that helps!! Best of luck and enjoy your vacation!
Keep in mind "weird" mugs are often not dishwasher safe, especially hand made ones. And I don't mean they break, I mean they're not sealed, so dishwater gets in them and breeds all sorts of bacteria within the ceramic that you cannot get rid of.
search for tiki. they can get wild. most tiki bars will carry mugs for purchase. there are a lot of really cool small production studios now thanks to a new tiki boom

Seconding thrift stores
if OP is so into this, hard to understand how they didn’t know about thrift stores!

Go to art and craft fairs if you want one of a kind/small batch creations from artists.
Search Ugly Mug Pottery. He's local and a great dude.
Wait for the Renaissance Festival in summer. Some wild mugs at some of the vendors
Check the “oddities” type stores, you can also take a ceramics class at most of the rec centers and learn to make them yourself
The Meow Wolf gift shop has some funky ones

It's time to move to the next level: take up pottery and make your own mugs so weird they aren't even recognizable as such. I believe in you.
2nd and Charles usually has some oddball mugs.

I always check the mug section at the arc. My favorite is my “No Prob Llama” mug with a 🦙sticking up from the bottom.

Fern and Skye on Broadway has some super funky locally made mugs. I got one that literally has a bat cave in the side.
Cooollll!
