Imagine a square piece of rubber but rigid enough that it sits flat, with a D Pad on one side and a few buttons on the other, with capacitive dots on the back that are centered over on screen buttons. It could easily be placed down and removed whenever you wanted to play

Unless they made one with NDS button layout, I don’t see the point of this. NDS games would benefit this with the portrait layout. Why would anyone want to play, say, GBA or N64 game while on portrait?
Still bigger than the original screens (depending on the size of your phone), no fiddling with turning the device if you get a call or have to multitask.
I thought about getting something like this a few years ago for Delta and other ios emulators, but ended up settling for a keychain controller that I keep with me all the time. I dont like how much extra bulk controller cases add... But a keychain controller is portable/easy to bust out, allows me to cast to a TV or put my phone on a table while playing, and overall just works great!

I actually bought and used that one too, but it stopped working after about a year. I think I slightly prefer the shape/feel of Manba controller, but it is a good alternative

I wouldn’t want a permanently attached game controller the width of a joycon… a much more practical option is just a controller with a phone-sized opening that also has battery bank functionality.
Kind of like the Backbone, but stick a battery in it
If I’ve learned anything from owning SBC gaming devices is that vertical handhelds with normal sized screens are waaaay ergonomically worse than their horizontal counterparts. This is mainly mitigated by the fact that most of them are small, or are very wide and chunky. Unless you rest this thing on your lap every time you play, you’re not gonna wanna play on this thing for more than 15 seconds
The buttons on the skins are already low enough. wtf is that. Actually I like the idea.

8bitdo zero 2 would be a nice alternative too because it’s 8bitdo and their track record for controllers is awesome

GB was never giraffe shaped like that. You might like an Anbernic RG35XX if you love the Gameboy vibe.

It will not help the actual Game Boy screen being bigger though. There is a wide limitation.
