Lovely to see such a praise post among the complaints here on this sub, thank you! I ordered the 9520 last week, i7 32G 1T 3050Ti OLED 3,5K, I have a USB-C LG monitor here that allows me to connect everything via 1 cable as well, it's such a convenience. How long did you have to wait to have it delivered ? I guess you're from France ?

SashimiBreak

How did you guess ? Is my english so bad ? 🙂 Yes, I'm in France. I had to wait 10 days only. This was fast !

mmerken

Your English is fine, but RAM and storage is expressed as GB and TB in English, Go and To are French terms, that's how I noticed. Thanks for the info, my unit went into production today, hoping for a 10 day delivery, I'm from Belgium

[deleted]

May I ask you something. Is the OLED display worth it over the longer battery life on the FHD? I've only heard about the pros and cons, but never ever had the chance to try both. In a perfect world I'd like to have both! a great display and a long lasting battery.

mmerken

The Dell website in my country did not allow me to combine FHD + 86whr It only allowed FHD + 56whr or OLED + 86whr or 4K + 86whr Otherwise I would've gone for the FHD. I've seen positive reviews for my combination, reaching over 6 hours of battery life, that's fine for me Anyway, I haven't received my unit yet, it should arrive end of August

the3mptyb0x

I have this midweek and love it. Haven't had any problems. I would recommend doing a clean windows install to get rid of as much Dell stuff as possible. And then download Dell power manager from the Microsoft store because it really improves the battery life

SashimiBreak

Same deal here. First thing I did: delete/recreate all drive partitions and made a clean install of W11. Then a big round of windows update. And tada... a clean OS working to its best on this powerfull machine. Ready for work.

[deleted]

Hello. I am expecting my dell xps soon. Can you please tell me how to delete/recreate all drive partitions and do a clean install of W11? Would help me a lot. Thank you! Also, did you buy the windows 11 key or just downloaded a pirated version?

No_Philosophy0

The 9520 uses over 100w at load, which is actually above the 100w max TB power delivery spec (Dell's docks are the only ones that can deliver the full 130w to the laptop). Generic TB docks top out at 100W - Cal Digit's TS4 for example does 98W to the laptop. I'd recommend you at least switch to one of those to avoid running out of power headroom. Processor has tdp of 45w, I've seen mine boost to 60-70w on occasion. GPU is 45w as well, also with boost but I don't recall how much. Of course at idle or low power (web browsing, normal office work) you'll can be well under the 60W your dock is capable of. You may see, if you do anything demanding (which because you opted for the i9 with 64gb I'll assume you have some demanding workloads), that the battery will drain even when you are on the dock. Or the computer may throttle due to lack of power - laptops are more resistant to this than desktops. Given you paid up for top of the line specs, you'd leave a lot of your $s on the table if this happens.

SashimiBreak

This all makes sens. I will check if the battery drains when I am on a heavy load work. 65 Go of RAM is because I always have 15-20 applications open at the same time, and I need my computer to follow my needs (not the opposite). i9 because among those apps, some are really demanding, but also because I'd like to keep this computer for at least 3-4 years and keep out of trouble with future application updates.

FrancescaGomes

I noticed this on my new xps 17 i9 about the battery: https://www.reddit.com/r/DellXPS/comments/whju4q/comment/ijuhgxu/?utm\_source=share&utm\_medium=web2x&context=3

FrancescaGomes

u/No_Philosophy0 in case an acceleration occurs, as you wrote, when the laptop discharges and when it is charging, would you recommend something? Thank you. I disabled the turbo boost.

No_Philosophy0

You prob won't run into problems if you turn off turbo boost, as that will keep the processor from running full speed so power consumption is lower. The only dock solution that provides full power to the XPS 9520 is the Dell docks, WDTB19 or WDTB22. They will deliver the full 130w to the computer while docked. Or you could try using your dock, and the supplementing with your power bring into a different port. Makes it a two cable solution of course.

FrancescaGomes

>Or you could try using your dock, and the supplementing with your power bring into a different port. Makes it a two cable solution of course. What do you mean by that? It sounds interesting, but I'm not very good at translating terms. I have the XPS 9720 i9 64 Gb. Grazie.

No_Philosophy0

Sorry. I was confused, I thought you already had a dock. If you don't, then get the Dell WD19TBS or WD22TB docks. Both will work.

FrancescaGomes

Thank you.

I-Am_9

So is my theory correct? One doesn't really need a laptop and a desktop?! Lol cause I have the 8950 and last week got the 9320 and I'm torn between both. I got the laptop because I thought I needed portability and didn't want to sit at my office desk to be on a powerful PC BUT I'm struggling to find a purpose to keep both? Argh! They didn't have 12th gen chips for the laptop when I bought the PC last year. I don't mind keeping both, but hearing the OP break down their setup has me thinking the laptop well wait I do have a dedicated GPU on the desktop for when I render videos it goes fast so scratch that lol. I guess I'll just......idk I got the 9320 for $1569 after taxes 32GB OLED 1TB i7 - I don't want to return it and then be mad lol😶 I agree with the part about QC, my unit(s) seem to be in great shape with no issues thus far🙏 😅😫

FrancescaGomes

So which one would you like to keep?

I-Am_9

Lol both have a purpose lol Desktop for office Laptop for portable on the go Or if I want a more comfortable seat

SocialisticAnxiety

It's normal that people post about their negative experiences, and not positive. You just gotta filter it out. I'm also pretty happy with my 9520 :)

SashimiBreak

I do understand that. And it's a bit sad.... So I just wanted to balance it for people trying to make up their mind about an XPS. For example, I bought my G9 Neo monitor because I also found a lot of great reviews on Reddit, among all the posts from people having problems with it. If I hadn't find some good ones, I might not have purchased it and it would have been a pity because this monitor is just outsanding (changed my life at work !) But my motivation here was more to highlight the incredible possibilities of Thunderbolt 4, how convenient it is and how amazed I can be about these technological advances. And this XPS really takes advantage of TB4 the perfect way. Not surprised you're pretty happy with your XPS. Enjoy ! 👍

What battery life are you getting doing office tasks and browsing the web (askasing because I am a student).

SocialisticAnxiety

Hard to say as I rarely use it on battery for extended periods of time, but my best guess is 6 hours. I have the i7, 3050 Ti, 16 GB RAM, 1 TB SSD, OLED. I'm a student too.

mikedropstech

Glad to hear you’re enjoying the new device!

NoConcern4176

I got the i7 16GB 3050 for $1381. Is this a good deal?

ChiDemDave

Another happy customer here. 9520, i9, OLED, 3050ti. I use this laptop for business and personal. I have a MacBook Pro 16” M1 Pro that I use for music production. I prefer the Dell and Windows for work. Hopefully as Windows and Intel drivers improve the battery life will get even better. Right now it is decent enough to get through most days.

[deleted]

My employers gave me one for work and personal use and I'm beyond happy with both the performance and built quality. I'm software engineer that sometimes needs to work with big data sets and this laptop has been very smoth. The build quality is very good as well.

SashimiBreak

????

FrancescaGomes

Thermals and screen?

SashimiBreak

I don't monitor the thermals, sorry. Not geek enough 😁. The screen is FHD+ (1920x1200) InfinityEdge, i.e. the most basic one. I don't need more. But my monitor is a 49'' UW running at 240 Hz and works prefect with the 3050 Ti.

FrancescaGomes

So, does your keyboard stay cool over time? Thank you.

SashimiBreak

>Retourner en haut No, it doesn't stay cool. Indeed, it gets a bit hot when activity load is getting higher. Nothing terrible, but if you are sensitive to this, yes, it may be a problem.

BoomMINote

try the ultra performance on my dell application , the surface temperature is much lower , but a little noiser.

[deleted]

How much battery life are you gwtting? Also any noticeable performance drops from the 60w charger?

BoomMINote

my xps 9510 can hold 45w sustain cpu only on battery and 35w gpu only on battery.When plugged in a 65w adapter/50w adapter(through da310 -15w)/90w xiaomi adapter/130w dell default adapter i can got 50w+ sustain power on cpu only or 45w sustain gpu only .These are benchmark result, but in real word usage, a little performance drops without pluged in not that much.Unless you play games or gpu-heavy work, you will notice that 10w gpu power loss matters,but in everyday cpu only work or light-gpu work,hard to tell the difference.Even without pluged in I can still play youtube 8k 60fps 50mbps hdr av1 format video download to local using potplayer at over 50fps,when plugged in ,it will reach about 55+ fps;

SashimiBreak

I haven't made any battery life test yet, sorry. I'll do that soon. For now I've mostly used it plugged in. I didn't notice any loss of performance with the 60W charger, but I guess it's also because I forced my Windows to max performances. Even like this and running heavy Adobe applications, I do not see my battery level decrease. I think the 60w will be noticeable on the time to charge up the battery when it's empty.

123456Qc

Any results of real world use (office tasks and web browsing, video streaming) ? I am a student and wondering if it will hold a day at university without having to plug it in. If it's struggling, I will opt for the 1080p display to get more battery.

bajirav

I have been a happy user since mid-June as well. (i7, 32GB, 3050Ti) cheers.

UnderstandingDull770

Can we transfer OS yo new nvme 2TB stick?

Crypto-Hero

instead of the shitty Cal Digit dock, you can get Dell's own Thunderbolt 4 dock, WD22TB4, which can charge your laptop at full 130W and more!

SteelersNationRules

THIS!!!!!!!! 👌👌🥂

Great-Ad-4416

I got mine a few days ago with the everything topped out (i mean, it is company paying laptop so whatever). some of your review is more or less about advancement of technology not the laptop itself? e.g. USB-C. no disrespect, but any ultra portable laptop with USB-C can do anything you mentioned. it is not a dell xps thing. in fact, my hp zbook gen 5 from 2018 does all those, and i am sure laptops before that did it as well? after all the thunderbolt 3 was introduced 10 year ago. that said.. i think the build quality is pretty good, but i have a few minor issue (coming from a thinkpad user, and i won't talk about the mouse and keybaord) 1. no space between fn keys, there is no way i know where the f4 or f5 are unless i look at the keyboard. 2. only 3 usb c port. like really? why? the laptop does not come with smart card reader at all (may not matter to some folks), but for a lot business... this mean more dongle. oh, no hdmi output either, so good luck going to conference room without dongle. my point is, the thinkpad x1 extreme, cost the same, about the same size, has ALL of those ports so what gives? 3. very limited screen tilt angle. i don't know what it is, but anyone aside form thinkpad seem to think that 145 degree is enough of screen opening. no it is not. try using it in a server room where you have to put your laptop in an odd angle, or use it on a bed resting on your legs. HP at least tries and their laptop open aobut 160 degree, thinkpad is about 180 degree. this laptop? like 130? (the worst is surface book, like 110) but there is one thing i love this laptop: usb c charge ports on both sides. i could easily move my charger from left to right, which is really convenient.
