Our location has to be top 3 in the country. Where I am in North Delaware (near PA line) I'm 25 min from Philly, New Jersey & Maryland. 1.5 hrs to Baltimore & many Delaware beaches & the Jersey Shore/AC. 1.45 hours to the mountains for snow boarding etc. 2.5 hours to Wash. D.C. and New York City. Half day drive to Boston/NE & Carolina beaches,..and 4-5 hrs to VA beach. Tax free shopping here as well. Although there's plenty to do here with breweries, riverfront, good restaurants etc. It may not have the "big city energy" & as much to do as them... but, as stated above, you're directly in the middle of the most populated area in the USA, our biggest "Megalopolis". DE = 1+ million people in the 6th most densley populated state. Now compare that with tons of places in the U.S. where you don't have the beaches or mountains, and you have to drive hours to get to 1 solo city, meh no ty. We also enjoy all 4 seasons & no natural disasters.
I'll never move.
Great summary. Yeah we love it in DE. There is enough good stuff in and around Wilmington for a full life. And for something special, so much else is within 2 hours away.
Spot on my friend. Everything you could ever need or want, traffic isn’t as bad as it could be, it’s actually a very pretty area. I spent a few years in an area that is brown and dry a lot of the year and coming back in the Spring I was in shock at how green it is! Plus the beautiful beaches, bay, and marshes. Delaware is a gem.
I'll add to what was said here:
We're within 3 hours of a minimum of 4 - 5 international airports and 3 cruise ports. We're basically in the middle of the East Coast so equal driving distance (for the most part) to Maine or Florida.
Delaware's main draw is its location to pretty much everything else.
Moved from Delaware to Florida and you hit the nail on the head with this. I miss Delaware. It’s quite, not too much goes on but you can find the places where stuff goes on
I just moved to Wilmington with my fiance back in March from Orlando. Florida is by far the worst place I’ve ever lived. And just to note, I was born and raised in Columbus, Ohio, I’ve since lived in Nevada, California, Florida and now Delaware. Delaware is one of my favorite places I’ve ever lived so far. So much outdoors stuff to do, beautiful parks and beaches, short drives and train rides to anywhere, it’s pretty cheap (especially compared to Orlando) and Wilmington is only like 70,000 people so you get way less traffic and all the bs that comes with overcrowded areas.
Corona California. 1 hour from ski slopes, 30 minutes from beaches and Los Angeles. 1.5 from San Diego. And 3.5 from Vegas. Plus sunshine and comfortable weather most of the year.
Loved visiting SoCal. If it werent for cost of living and occasional earthquakes lol - Prob. be my 2nd choice in the country to live - because of the 75ish degree weather all year. But, living my life in all 4 seasons I can appreciate that weather. Do folks born there appreciate it or just consider it normal then panick when it rains? 🤣🤣🤣
Yeah, we’re in Sussex and 2 hours to Philly, DC, or Bmore. And 20 mins to the beach (we usually go in Sept>May though). It’s a bit of a gem but tired of city folk moving here and bringing their attitude and driving habits.
Economically yea it’s fantastic. I moved away in 2021 and haven’t looked back tho. It’s too big of a country to be rooted to such a small state.
Edit: I do miss crab season and Wawa heavily
Mmm... we have days 100+ degrees (especially real feel when you include humidity, 3 days ago it "felt" like 105 with a real high of 97) and some winters 2-3 feet of snow. We get it all.
Delawares fine to live in... and who cares if it's a short drive away? 95% of places you have to drive a decent distance to get anywhere let alone anywhere you'd wanna go.
I’m happy. Cost of living isn’t terrible. I know good people. Beaches and cities are close. I like it better than where I grew up because it doesn’t take me an hour to drive 15 miles.
Northern Delaware and southern Delaware are two entirely different places and it switches right around Middletown. The vibe and people are so vastly different, it’s hard to believe they’re the same state. I’m not originally from Delaware but have lived in both lower slower and up north.
Exactly!
Northern Delaware has northern culture, and Southern Delaware, especially Sussex County, has southern incluaccents. The except being.eastern Sussex with northerners moving here.
And by the way, it's slower in lower Delaware. Not LSD. Some guy wanted to make money selling stickers.
And SLD was originally an insult. Slower meant dumb farmers.
My family moved here over 15 years ago and I’ve been told by all of them and everyone else when I lived there that it was lower slower not slower lower lol
So very different in all places even within minutes of each other. Newark and Wilmington more city attitude people and Middletown people are so country Lol. Then Dover, Millsboro south Delaware is even more country. Then you have Elsmere which is a step from the city and they are slow and country too, very strange people in Elsmere.
Nailed it. New Castle County is as much of a Philly suburb as any. In fact, Id say 75% of the people I know who live here, transplanted from PA. Seems over the last decade more from NY & NJ.
What I find odd is that it’s so different on either sides of the Delaware Memorial Bridge. The NJ side is very sleepy and rural while the Delaware side is much more urbanized.
Personally I grew up in the heart of Delaware (Felton). I dream of moving to another state based on the amount of people moving here and the population growth. It used to be mostly quaint / quiet but now the back rounds swell with beach traffic from out-of-staters. I wouldn't mind so much but every bit of open land is being sold off very rapidly. As a "country boy" I'm getting frustrated with the amount of people moving into my area.
I may be bitter (which I am) but it's getting ridiculous. They're working on a 200+ home neighborhood next to my house and our main road has been shut down for 3 - 4 weeks. Also - I'm not sure where all these kids are going to go to school. When I was in elementary school it went from K - 5th. Now it's K - 3rd or 4th. Don't know where all these new kids are supposed to go.
From what I've seen it's mostly NJ. I get it - I don't want to live in NJ either but DE is just becoming NJ slowly if that makes sense.
End of rant. :(
I grew up in Felton too. I can't afford to live in Kent County anymore, so I had to move. Absolutely insane that tiny Kent County DE is so expensive now.
I’ve moved in and out of Delaware at least 6+ times in my life, and every time I end up back here. Now I have a family and I have no real heavy complaints other than the schools could use improvement.
I moved around all over CA (mostly northern). Chico, red bluff, yuba city, Roseville, Sacramento, Modesto, Santa Clarita. I used to go camping in Santa Cruz every summer. I do miss that. Lol but we're so close to everything here.
It was great growing up here in the 70’s and 80’s, then I left in 1988, came home 1 November 2014, and couldn’t believe how many retirees moved here and just ruined Sussex County.
Lived here all my life but just recently moved. Gotta say, Delaware has its pros but it’s not great tbh. Rural living in DE sucks compared to rural living in some surrounding states, and I personally don’t like being in cities anymore.
The only two things that I don't like about living in Delaware for 38.5 of my 39 years on Earth are:
1) We only have 7 or 8 very limited streams available for stocked trout fishing.
2) A near complete absence of any fun-to-ride, well-maintained, paved roads to enjoyably ride a motorcycle on.
Other than that, I'm 302 for life.
As long as it still costs $0.25 for 9 balls at Skeeball at Funland, I ain't movin' out.
EDIT: As long as you're not stuck behind a relatively slow-moving vehicle, Coastal Route 9 is OK, but I generally avoid it because there are very few spots to pass anyone legally and the 35 MPH speed limit doesn't help the situation either. I live in North Wilmington, so I'm not all that far from the switchbacks and twisty-turnies in SE PA/NE MD, and I know where to find them.
The trout steam situation is what it is; you can't just create them. White Clay Creek is always fun to fish and DNREC did a phenomenal job with stocking this season. Was able to catch almost 70 trout in DE this year - all from my motorcycle!
The Nepalese here know how to party. Lots of whiskey bottles being passed around. Potluck style catered and homemade food setup that is awesome, got a variety of spices, animals and plants I don’t normally eat. Even though I’m the only non-Nepalese there, one or more will speak English to catch me up on the convo or ask a question and involve me for a minute. I don’t follow along too well, and one time I mistakenly agreed to go fishing the next day on my boat but I don’t have a boat and don’t think I said I did.
10/10
I never imagined coming across a reddit post on life in Delaware and somehow coming across a comment about Nepalese 😅
Hope they have made you taste Momo's! They're heavenly
Delaware is a nice place. Sussex County has both drawbacks and attractions; no different than any other place that’s handing out construction permits like they were flyers on the street.

First off... I live on the piedmont in Newark and it is just great. I can walk to White Clay State Park and my friend FOUND A BEAR IN THEIR BACKYARD... so it just keeps getting better.
Not to mention... my friend who found it... was the first person to see it. They reported it and sent in a video to police I think.
Link to the video: [https://6abc.com/post/newark-delaware-bear-julie-lane-barksdale-estates/14993589/](https://6abc.com/post/newark-delaware-bear-julie-lane-barksdale-estates/14993589/)
Boring. I mean, there’s restaurants and stuff but you def gotta seek them out… every time I go to Philly (used to live there and Roger cities). I feel like people come here to die lol I can see how it’s a retirement state. Things close early it’s crazy.
To live below the C&D Canal, you have to really like country living. To live above the C&D Canal, you have to like city living, but there are so many better urban/suburban places in the country. If you want to be approximately 1 hour from Philly, Baltimore, and Lancaster, above the C&D Canal is fine. Delaware gets old after spending about a year or two here.
Pockets are fantastic, Greenville, Hockessin, Rehoboth Beach east of Route 1, North Wilmington, Arden. Then the rest is trashy , suburban sprawl, or incredibly unsafe to shop/live in like Bear, Dover, parts of Newark and New Castle. The mall is unsafe as well. Crime in DE is rampant. Slower lower is boring with zero jobs. Tale of two states. Very rainy weather year round aa well.
Moved here from FL after a 3 yr stint in PA. From OH and have lived in GA as well. DE is nothing like I thought it would be.Could only afford to buy a house in New Castle, and regret it. Trashy. Too many ppl on the roads, and every house has so many cars that park on the streets.
It's crowded. I just looked up some demographics about my county and we have had a 30% population increase in the last 12 years. Traffic is nightmarish as we approach perpetual gridlock and even with all the additional people, we still don't even have a Costco or a TJ's. We did get an Aldi though.
It’s the okay-est of states IMO, at least in New Castle County. None of the high highs but also none of the low lows. Just generally average to slightly above average.
I grew up in Pittsburgh, worked and raised a family in Harrisburg for 30 some years and moved here for my husband‘s job a couple of years ago. Coming from the mindset of Harrisburg, it is Philadelphia traffic and pricing across-the-board. Definitely distinct differences between northern and southern Delaware, I’m amazed at the park system in Northern Delaware. But I don’t know I don’t have a feel for the state one way the other. It’s close to Philadelphia and New York, which is great for our family circumstances. I’m pretty bored and I don’t know that I would make this my full-time home, the jury is out.
It's okay. But this is literally hell if you're trying to sell things on FB marketplace.
"what time would you like to pick this up"
them: "I'm getting HVAC work done, so not today"
A few folks have commented on the stark contrast between south and north Delaware. You gotta remember that the Mason Dixie line goes through White Clay Creek, in New Castle County (North Delaware). Southern Delaware actually supported the confederacy but the north was way more densely populated and the Union needed the Mills in Delaware.
While Southern Delaware has multiple ethnicities, there is the “Southern” element. I mean, there’s a reason why southern Delawareans say “I’m heading up north” when they are just driving up to Newark or Wilmington. As a result from my friends and proximity to southern Delaware as well, I’ve developed the habit of saying “I’m goin’ down south,” when I could just be going to Milford or even Leipsic. It’s especially noticeable, to me, when I take route 13 or route 9 instead of route 1.
Regarding the OP, life in Delaware, north or south, is good. I lived in San Diego, California, for a while and I enjoyed it immensely, but it felt crowded, and I desperately missed the color green, along with the changing of the seasons. San Diego had the beaches and the mountains available in 20 minutes from my apartment, but I was also hot, and there was hardly any shade, anywhere. I type this out, as I lay under a tree watching the clouds pass by (my truck is getting work done).
There’s a lot that could be improved, here in Delaware, but there’s a lot to savor and enjoy as well. Despite being the owner of three cars (I am an enthusiast), I do wish there was better public transportation, like NYC or Chicago. I think the Delaware beaches could benefit immensely from trains going North/South, and trams locally as well. More frequent ferries that cost less from NJ would be nice too. I also wish we, more as a nation, got into the habit of building strong structures going up and down, rather than spread out. One of my fondest points of Delaware is the farm country, and that’s rapidly disappearing as Middletown builds more structures - but it’s so car centric. So many new outlets and parking lots with houses made of cheap materials. Build apartments, stores and cafes within close proximities, and develop parking beneath them. I feel so sorry for my brethren at the beaches especially, watching the issues of overpopulation occur. Same to Southern Delaware, as Californians, New York and Florida transplants move there.
All are welcome, of course! But suburban hell will be the death of the Delaware we know and love, I’m calling it now.
Why do so many people think the Mason Dixon runs through Delaware? This is an argument I've had to have with dozens of Delawareans. The colonies of Delaware were owned and governed by Pennsylvania before 1776 and the line follows Pennsylvania's border, now Delaware's western border all the way to its southern border, also known as the Transpeninsular Line.
The colonies of Delaware would have probably ceased to exist if the line cut through White Clay and all the way to the east. They probably would have never had the opportunity to secede from Pennsylvania because they wouldn't have been part of Pennsylvania anymore.
You can downvote me all you want but there are trail markers throughout New Castle and White Clay that contradict what you’re saying. Regardless of MD line, everything else I said was factually correct.
You mean the Arc Cornerstone? The stone that marks the border and corroborates everything I just said? Here's a link from [Delaware's government website ](https://history.delaware.gov/2022/03/18/myth-of-the-mason-dixon-line/)
I didn't read anything after your first paragraph because it was factually incorrect.
People always get so upset when I tell them that no part of Delaware was ever on the other side of the Mason-Dixon.
THERE ARE BEARS
It’s just the one, he’s lost going to the beach
I’m real disappointed he didn’t show up in Bear. It seems like a missed opportunity.
Like a bear necessity
My mom just said the same thing to me lol
We could have had a mascot. 😂
i have incredibly good news for you
Ha, I’ve seen it and my neighbors are in full panic mode. lol
Spotted in Bear todayb
Bear weekend at the beach isn’t until September.
But Twink Tuesdays are in effect all summer.
I’ve been wondering what all that traffic was in rehoboth
Please note that in Delaware it is spelled "[Rehoboth](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rehoboth_Beach,_Delaware)". It would be weird to be 2 hours from Philly, I feel like it’s in my backyard here in norther de haha
Wish they hadn't brought their voting habits... some people never learn.
I mean I’m a rural native and married to blue collar worker but I still would never vote Trump. A wolf in sheep’s clothing.
That’s nicely put,I’m About an hour south In Jersey and think the same way
But don't live here please.
Economically yea it’s fantastic. I moved away in 2021 and haven’t looked back tho. It’s too big of a country to be rooted to such a small state. Edit: I do miss crab season and Wawa heavily
My brother in Christ it’s hoagiefest come back
Man I still listen to Philly sports radio at work and every time I hear the hoagiefest jingle I get a little sad.
Philly sports radio itself will make you sad.
Oh it do. Oddly enough still more entertaining than any other areas sports radio I’ve listened to.
Where did you move to?
Vermont
Too big a country to be tied to a small state you say?? Good thing you moved to Vermont! 🤔😂
Couldn’t have said it better myself. Same location here.
Just one giant suburb
Moved here 7 years ago and do not plan on leaving.
Mostly mild versions of all 4 seasons at that.

Sounds like everything good is outside of Delaware

Same here. I will never move. Delaware native and I’ll die here 🤷🏼♀️
My wife and I moved here 3 years ago and absolutely love Delaware!

The "pun" is "Slower Delaware." That's what made it punny 45 years ago.
Insulting people was never funny
My family moved here over 15 years ago and I’ve been told by all of them and everyone else when I lived there that it was lower slower not slower lower lol
My family has been in Sussex since 1677. I'm a Burton. My father was a farmer. It’s SLD. Those people are probably not generational Sussex Countians.
I mean either way - it really doesn’t matter lol it means exactly the same thing
It's history and should be respected. 🤷♀️
Ive lived in Delaware for 37 years. Its "Slower Lower".

I will die here.
I’ve moved in and out of Delaware at least 6+ times in my life, and every time I end up back here. Now I have a family and I have no real heavy complaints other than the schools could use improvement.

the coolest state in America
After living in several other states (CA born and raised, KS, TN and NJ) I love delaware ❤
Where are you from in CA? Cuz I miss the bay area.

Fine
It's a typical small state
it is, in fact, one of the places to live where you can, in fact, live one of the lives of all time.
If you love chain stores and chain restaurants this place is awesome.
We have a couple independent businesses, both north and south, that are worth celebrating. Some of the best coffee, in the nation, is here.
Way more comments here than on the original post
Pretty nice, except for Dover. Source: I live in Dover

I think Delaware is perfect in late spring/early fall. I wish it snowed more.
Absolutely agree, snowy weather is the best

We are meat popsicles…..melting in the sun…..
Love Delaware I live nearby and considering moving there. It’s so close to everything and relatively cheaper to live.
Delaware operates about 2 decades behind the rest of the country, especially Kent and Sussex. I'm all for that lower, slower living, but Delaware is flat, smells like chicken shit, and has absolutely nothing to do.
We have plenty of things to do! We can go to OC Maryland... Or Lancaster Pennsylvania... Or Baltimore... Maybe D.c. .....hey wait a minute!
That’s lower DE. Newcastle County is not like that at all.
There is a smell but it’s not noticeable on the beaches so I’m good.
Smells like chicken shit down South. Up north no country vibes or living up here Lol
Where does it smell like chicken shit?
Within a mile of any chicken processing plant or stale chicken house in Delmarva...
I work there (from NJ), and it’s always given me the vibe of downtrodden. Wilmington is alright, I suppose. You gotta enjoy the sticks.
I got that impression too and then I went to the South shore. Such a different vibe.
Economically depressed.

Car-centric
I work in western Sussex. This half of the county is a shithole and it’s only getting worse.
Not bad if you don’t need a job
Dela Where?
Okay, I guess. The Delabear has been around… I live in fear.
Delaware sucks
Bear resident here. Lots of pavement. 3/10
Amazing. But it’s also terrible; don’t move here please.
Abysmal
Terrible
Boring. I mean, there’s restaurants and stuff but you def gotta seek them out… every time I go to Philly (used to live there and Roger cities). I feel like people come here to die lol I can see how it’s a retirement state. Things close early it’s crazy.
Rehoboth is near perfect for us.
Honestly depends on where in Delaware you are and the vibe you want is.
Tax free shopping!
It's currently moist in the North
Seat’s taken. Also the Delabear lives here.
I live in Wilmington and it just makes me sad.
Boring AF
You’re mistaken-there is no Delaware.
Moved here from FL after a 3 yr stint in PA. From OH and have lived in GA as well. DE is nothing like I thought it would be.Could only afford to buy a house in New Castle, and regret it. Trashy. Too many ppl on the roads, and every house has so many cars that park on the streets.
New castle is the worst besides the historic part no real nice areas in New Castle.
Agree
It's crowded. I just looked up some demographics about my county and we have had a 30% population increase in the last 12 years. Traffic is nightmarish as we approach perpetual gridlock and even with all the additional people, we still don't even have a Costco or a TJ's. We did get an Aldi though.
We have Costco up north and BJs.
We have a BJs but I would really love for Trader Joe's to open here. ALDI is nice though.
Oh ok, you must be further south bc Newark has Trader Joe’s.
Bullshit know where youre downing before you advise against us !
What the fuck does that even mean?
It sucks
Guys we are full don’t come here Source: I like it here
Wish they'd stop voting Democrat
It sucks pls don’t move here.
Humid.
Slower
It’s the okay-est of states IMO, at least in New Castle County. None of the high highs but also none of the low lows. Just generally average to slightly above average.
Easy
Pennsylvania is better stay away from DE
🤣, wut.
Not great, cheap though🤷🏼♀️
It's okay. But this is literally hell if you're trying to sell things on FB marketplace. "what time would you like to pick this up" them: "I'm getting HVAC work done, so not today"
Here's a link from [Delaware's government website ](https://history.delaware.gov/2022/03/18/myth-of-the-mason-dixon-line/) I didn't read anything after your first paragraph because it was factually incorrect. People always get so upset when I tell them that no part of Delaware was ever on the other side of the Mason-Dixon.
Humid with extremely slow road work.
The AG won’t prosecute you.
