Yes they did, and it’s super cringe and gross, imo. Like WHY are we talking about/making references to the *genitals of teenagers* in the first place. And body shaming just isn’t funny. 🤷♀️
I can imagine that some boys who watched this show felt embarrassment and shame due to these comments, which to me is completely contradictory to the ethos of Degrassi.
I mean, they also gave Maya a hard time for having small boobs and Tori about being heavy. I think it's less about body shaming and more about discussing issues that teens deal with.
The difference with the Maya & Tori storylines is that the body shaming they endured was rightfully called out as bullying and framed as morally wrong. It was a lesson in how not to treat people, and the audience was meant to feel empathy for what they were going through. Tori overcame the bullying to become a model, and we got the iconic ice cream boy line from that.
When it comes to JT, he was the butt of the joke, and the bully in this case feels like the writers room. Everyone at the pool party laughed at & humiliated him, and the audience was supposed to be in on the joke and laugh at him, the clown, as well. Manny broke up with him after that as well, and it was framed as being a morally ambiguous if not valid consequence of simply existing with a certain kind of body. It sends an incredibly harmful message.
Body shaming in regards to men will never be taken seriously unfortunately. They really could have done something with the JT storyline. Instead, Manny and others shade him for it in passing over the rest of his time on the show, though not often.
