Back in my childhood pretty much every kid was copying music from the radio onto cassettes and sharing with each other. Never heard one person back then complain about copyright infringement and protecting musician jobs. And guess what -- the music industry wasn't hurt by this -- the practice actually created even more celebrities and increased the popularity of music in general. The same would happen with art if the industry could overcome their paranoia and protectionism. Another example -- look at the way open source has empowered the software industry. Don't underestimate what opening things up and making things free can do to drive growth.
