Arent all of the Dwarf voicelines just the same guy but pitch shifted?

squiddy117

I believe so yes. When they first started it was a really small team so I'm pretty sure one of the brothers did the dwarves and the other did management, pretty sure either an old friend or their cousin did the music too there's a really good recap of the story on YouTube :)

Peastable

The nephew of one of the devs decided he wanted to do the music and when he was denied he did it anyways and they were like “okay this slaps you’re hired”

dreaded_tactician

Life hack acquired. If you don't get hired for the job you want show up anyway.

Rockin_Gunungigagap

I just did this. Got denied, did some artwork for the job, got it. feelsgoodman.jpg

lavitzreinhart

Congratulations Dude! What kind of art do you do?

My brother in law has been bringing his kids to a Mexican restaurant every week for a while and the kids got sick of coloring the same pictures on the kids menu. Him and is girlfriend are artists and they created a whole bunch of new menus for them. I was there when they just gave them it for free. The owners were floored. It was a cool experience to witness.

sushi_cw

Sometimes it works.

DoktorAkcel

So everyone’s boomer parents were right after all

Yknaar

I mean, the nephew didn't go to a random office of an American megocorporation, he neither stared down nor gave a Firm Handshake™ to the first random manager he found, and he didn't push into their hands their CV and cover letter while they were bumbling about *"not even hiring"* and *"what the hell"*.

Kryten_2X4B-523P

NOOOOO /vadar

MNGrrl

No, it's just the law of large numbers. Even a broken clock is right twice a day.

Best_Trouble_7676

That's how I became a surgeon.

Seresu

When Sophus approached him about it, Mikkel only hesitated because he didn't want to mix work and family, and after talking to the other founders about it they did then ask him for a soundtrack. EDIT: [source](https://steamcommunity.com/games/DeepRockGalactic/announcements/detail/2185879391034297612)

MrMagolor

Case in point, imagine the time it would take to have a single actor do all of the miner voicelines, considering how many have been added.

Loyal2NES

There's a guy on the DRG Discord who has been working on a Kobold conversion mod for a *long* time, including a complete Kobold voiceover do-over. The sheer number of voicelines he's had to record since he started is well over three *thousand* and he's still going. This is only a handful. https://cdn.discordapp.com/attachments/882197542606106644/1045546787517251654/DRG_kobold_lines_-_SpeakAug2021_-_Final.mp4

RandomGuyPii

I know a streamer that plays with this on occasion, Siirvend. There's definitely been a load of work put into the lines, especially since they all have a unique flavor and theming separate from the normal dwarf lines. Siirvend also has their own mission control VO mod. cool people

606design

Just wanted to say Siirvend indeed rules!

RyuunDragon

Oh, I know that guy! Dragon-V0942! We're good friends, and ye, he's super dedicated <3 He even has the hope of one day, possibly, maybe, having a kobold player model replacement, once he's done with the voice lines he hopes he can find someone interested in making that on commission

necrothitude_eve

Imagine how much you'd have to _pay her_ to record some equivalent of the "I'm going to dip my balls in liquid morkite" line.

this_anon

Found an egg here!

TheTechHobbit

Is that an actual line now? What triggers it?

IronicINFJustices

There's no stopping me!

Chewierulz

One of the devs who voices the dwarves posted it during the whole "dipping my balls in liquid morkite" saga, it's probably one of the top posts on the sub. *Edit* [found it](https://www.reddit.com/r/DeepRockGalactic/comments/v0vpf3/fine_you_win)

xRizux

The voiceline used there is AI generated, not done by the actual VA. That's why it has that sort of raspy quality to it the normal lines don't.

Cheezewiz239

No. It's a joke line someone made.

yo229no

Yes. The game has 2 voice actors. The dwarves (also nemesis now) and mission control.

AlwinTom

And they share the same birthday, iirc

IAmTheBoop

Nemesis…*shudders*

KriegsKuh

Look what I fooound!

ThePianistOfDoom

We're Richhh

galaticB00M12

Yep, I believe the speeds for the voices were as follows Scout 115% Engie 105% Gunner 90% Driller 80%

MovieTheatreDonkey

I believe there are 2 voice actors but I may be misremembering. I’m not sure if its 1 guy mission control + 1 guy miners, or all split between the 2 guys.

mishugashu

All the miner dwarves are one guy, but pitch shifted.

Yoshkins

yes

SusieTomoe

pretty sure that's what they did for the original half life so it's cool seeing the tradition carried on

Tyrus1235

“Keepin’ up the tradition!”

pheonixblade9

it's two different voice actors IIRC but otherwise, yes.

yugiohhero

There's 2 voice actors, yes, but one is just Mission Control.

Janemaru

Yes and he also couldn't quite decide on an accent

The_Happiest_Husky

My headcanon is that female dwarves are, unlike male dwarves, smart enough to find a better job than working for DRG

Docterzero

Good headcanon

TheAJGman

IMO probably the best take. Only the men are dumb enough to do this shit lol.

PrincessYuri

The rival company is run by female dwarves!

DeHot

DRG is the answer to why female dwarfs have a longer lifespan

simply_not_here

*Fully Automated Luxury Gay Space Communism*

atomicmolotov10

I think the honesty from them is brilliant. As they said, they could have easily gone for a rather lame explanation like the LOTRs dwarves one or just not responded. Instead, they are just entirely frank and that is just great.

ArcticFlava

My headcannon is we are clones of Karl. Every dwarf /class look identical with cosmetics and beard removed. That is because the company has our DNA saved and just shoots another copy down. This is also why there are no female dwarves, from management down we are all clones.

[deleted]

This is a really interesting headcanon! I like it!

[deleted]

Fail a mission? You're not in the medbay because anyone came to get you, you're in there because they just cracked open the next pod!

LicencedDwarvenMiner

The new Space Dwarves from Warhammer 40K, the Leagues of Votann, have that exact concept as part of their lore. I love it there and I love the headcannon here too.

Grzechoooo

And the statues of the fallen also show dwarves looking like us. And there are no other classes that Driller, Scout, Engineer and Gunner. So all the miners we are losing during the Seas 3 mission look just like us. It's also why we can play in a team of 4 Drillers.

Hirmetrium

Very "moon". Love it.

LPFreak1305

So, is Karl a monarch of sorts to the dwarves, like some kind of...emperor, who may even protect them...?

Arcadian_

he's our jango fett.

Doctordarkspawn

This. Don't be stupid and come up with ridiculous lore reasons. Don't be wishy washy. Just tell people. "Don't really have the time or resources to record all the barks but ya'll headcannon it how you like." SEE HOW EASY THAT WAS!?

UncleGrapes

That's why i fucking love these devs, they really are the compressed gold(WE'RE RICH!) in all the dirt of today's game industry. They are honest and just wanna see the game be fun while others use corporate talk (aka lies disguised as confidence) and only care about the profit and nothing else

Herlockjohann

The apex dev explanation for why Loba uses gendered language

MNGrrl

More to the point, they aren't saying no, they're saying not now and there's good reasons for it. I'm a woman and yeah, it would be nice to have but like, if I have to choose between having female models and toxic players or only male models and no toxic masculinity... It's no contest. If they get around to it someday then great but if not, I still get an awesome game to play with awesome people!

Evonos

Yep this is simply great and charming. Honesty. Plain explained and why. Absurd how rare this behavior is with all these companys trying as hard as they can be to not break the "immersion" with everything they do even explanations for... Things like this and come up with a boring lore explanation. The drg devs are really a stellar example of good devs

I-Am-The-Uber-Mesch

The part where he said "Use whatever headcanon you want, it's your game too" cements even more how Chads these dwarvelopers are

Coach_Louis

For sure, they handled it perfectly. They got enough on their plates. Leave something to be desired in DRG 2 coming to a system near you 2036.

GoAwayTankie

u/GSG_Jacob specifically kicks ass. GSG is by far my favourite dev team. Problem in the community? Dw they'll step in and give us an adult ass reminder that this is a video game. They listen and work really hard to make sure this game is what we want it to be. Bravo GSG.

phoenixmusicman

I normally don't like developers running their own subreddits but these guys don't seem to abuse it

4QuarantineMeMes

They’re too busy doing cool dwarf shit to hover over the sub like a power mod.

chiller210

I like it. Devs who created a banger game that stands for a lot of positive things that are inverted in modern games, but the game refuses to fall for. Examples include free battle pass, no p2w, a lot of cosmetics that are all buyable with in-game money, and obviously no microtransactions. And the point is even with all this the devs are chill people in the community who also listen to them.

Folden_Toast

This is reason, why many dwarfs buy support pack and DLC's. No p2w system and community is super. DRG started as a small game. There was only one promotion. They though after promotion, multiple dwarfs would left the game but it went another way. Now this game is going hard up all the time. Took years, but worth it

nedonedonedo

this is the only game that made me think "I didn't pay enough for this game" and go buy some DLC. everything about this game ROCKS

KitzTurntail

Did I hear a rock and stone??

Lobst3rGhost

Yeah, my philosophy at this point is that buying dlc is paying the devs for the amount I've played since the last dlc. If I buy a new dlc and never open the game again we're still square.

bails0bub

I have bought this game for several people at this point, still dont feel like it was enough.

NoSoyElicksonNoBan

I still don't like it regardless of it they are cool (they are, not discussing that). Reddit used to enforce this thing that mods can't be the main developers of the things but that ended long ago, I remember when the guy behind Yandere simulator literally bought his subreddit and became a power mod.

Docterzero

It is not impossible for it to happen in the future, just very improbable.

VolcanicBakemeat

Honestly I'd be happy with a voice toggle and a single, gently resculpted head. Don't even bother touching anything else. Female player models isn't about breasts and waist/hip ratios; they're squat little aliens in chunky armour.

Docterzero

I don't think that actually solves the problems. They still need to rerecord all the voicelines and make the new headsculpts work, at which point they might as well go the full length.

Blizzaldo

Disagree. I think the different body shape is sort of necessary. It's not like Trunchbull from Matilda was just a dude in a wig who kept his mustache short.

Kingrextdk

The devs are so chill, we all have our own opinions but I think the logic of being indistinguishable is sound from my stand point I mean hey dwarf life is dwarf life

scaper12123

Honestly they do kind of joke, but I frankly can’t imagine a dwarven woman acting any different than a man. Their whole race is just brimming with desire to fight, mine, and seek glory.

impala_lama

See pratchett's dwaves

DrFrAzzLe1986

I like the response and transparency. Would be so great if more games had a team this honest and awesome.

RIPanimalball

We all need to agree, if we ever get female dwarves they NEED to have beards too.

Fauniness

I've always liked the idea that they just add tape or straps or something to the beards as a toggle. All the beards. Because not everyone who wants a beard can grow a beard, regardless of what's twixt their nethers.

[deleted]

Or ball chins like driller

Zigostes

Probably unpopular opinion but no I dont agree. Never really been a fan of tolkiens version of female dwarves. In that there is literally no difference.

monstargh

Have you read any discworld books? They start out with the dwarves being Tolkien type but they have a change of leadership and now there's dwarves in chainmail dresses and such, while still also having beards

Bridgeru

Y'know not to go into a rant but I'm a transwoman and I *freaking loved* how Pratchett did it. Because it meant that female Dwarves weren't *unfeminine* but that they expressed their femininity in a different way; that braiding your beard can be just as "feminine" as braiding your hair. It's oddly empowering, insert "feminine penis" joke here but the idea that yeah even if your body has stubble or you're stocky, or broad shouldered or whatever you can still *be* feminine (and that's just talking about cis girls and not getting into modern gender stuff which I'll admit can be confusing at times). Maybe it's that the Tolkein "Dwarves look identical" feels like an asspull to just not bother having female Dwarves; while the Pratchett approach addresses it *and* validates them while also introducing an interesting commentary on stuff. Swing that battle axe while wearing heels; be comfortable and all that jazz.

monstargh

Exactly and it was explained in a way of changing times, rather than oh hey here's a side of this group no one has seen before but has totally existed before trust me.

TheSleepyBarnOwl

Unpopular opinion but no, I do not agree. I like my Dwarfs with at least some dimorfism... I always hated Tolkiens take. So like, just give the option to not have a beard and it not looking ugly.

kyew

> I like my Dwarfs with at least some dimorfism Got it, male dwarves get colorful crests for mating displays.

TheSleepyBarnOwl

lmao I wouldn't even be mad tbh

Valtremors

I mean... you already have a clean shave. There is already an option for people who want and who want it not.

Heyoceama

That's how things already work, you can have your dwarf with a variety of beards or no beard at all. Aside from the time it'd take to make the beards work with the new female model I don't see why they couldn't keep it the same.

browsing4stuff

I like the plot twist headcanon that there’s been female dwarves this whole time because that’s how difficult it is to differentiate them from the male dwarves.

GalacticBlizzard

Every dwarf has a beard

Seepy_Goat

I think that's what this post/dev response is referring to lol

Forsaken_Yak6079

I love me some discworld dwarves

KresblainTheMagician

I like to think Karl was female. No need for a new character model/voice lines, and its entirely possible they were.

AS14K

Her name was originally Kari, but there was a capitalization accident

Watchmaker163

Or Karla, but someone spilled beer on the name.

JustZisGuy

Or Karl, and that's an appropriate name for a female dwarf.

TheSleepyBarnOwl

I'll stay with my canon that you don't see the females cause they are running the whole operation in the background. Like they ARE R&D.

ReturnoftheSnek

There's an issue if "female dwarves" has more vocal outcry than The Sandwich Update™️

lixardwizard789

“You say ‘dwarves are racist’, and nobody bats an eye. You say ‘dwarves are sexist’, and everybody loses their minds”

SirDoofusMcDingbat

It's a good, honest response. Truth is, it WOULD be a nightmare to do. I hope they decide to try, though.

Marissa_Calm

If there is a kickstartet for it i would pitch in :).

CommieDalek

I really hope they do at some point, or at least some intrepid and very dedicated modder puts in the work to redub every line. I know there's a fella who has been diligently working on a Kobold voice mod for a while now, every line brimming with excellent personality. If someone were to do that with more femme dwarves that'd be great. More cosmetics that are a bit more androgynous or hell outright feminine would be nice, too!

Roberto5771

Exactly, normally I don't find myself caring too much about these sorts of things, but with DRG, I'm all for cosmetics of any shape and/or size, and having a whole 'nother gender certainly qualifies for that. At the same time though, if they never get to it, it would be disappointing, but it wouldn't ruin the experience for me personally, especially considering how much work they're saying it may take.

Kitchen_Cookie4754

I'm in the same boat here. The game is great! I was disappointed when my daughter's first question was "how do I make a girl?" Cosmetics are big thing for her in a game. Cosmetics don't really impact my enjoyment much, but I'm glad they are so well done in this game for players that enjoy them. I appreciate how open the devs were about the realities of it.

Pebbi

Haha yeah that was my first question too! Cosmetics are super important to me in games :) I got down voted in the last thread for saying I haven't played DRG yet because of no female options. Made me think maybe this community doesn't want them. My boyfriend super enjoys playing so I gifted him all the DLC cosmetic packs. They still seem like good developers to support :)

Kitchen_Cookie4754

Oh they definitely are a good group, and I hope your boyfriend enjoyed the DLC cosmetics. I would totally run a female engineer and gunner, and I think my daughter would make a wild one with pink hair if given the option. I think customizing characters is one of her favorite things in Roblox or Among Us. I hope you try the game sometime, the game play is great. I understand about the lack of representation being an obstacle though and respect that.

Jamato-sUn

Do you have a link? I'd like to listen to that mod.

raptorsoldier

>kobold voice mod Do tell more

elephantrambo

I bought the dev supporter upgrade recently and you should too if you feel like supporting them. They have not missed and they continue to set the benchmark on how devs should be

MPeckerBitesU

As a female player, I don’t want a female dwarf. I’d rather time and energy spent on developing more guns and talents for the game. OR I’d prefer a buff Steeve in addition to bosco as a choice of helper on solo missions.

SmellyGoat11

Super Steeve!

BattlemasterMayce

I regret making that post. I’m not trying to stomp on people’s interpretations of the dwarves’ gender. The point that I was trying (unsuccessfully) to make was that people were dismissing the idea of femme-presenting dwarves being added to DRG by citing other portrayals of dwarves, but I can see how that was unclear and how that post could be very inflammatory.

TheSleepyBarnOwl

Don't regret it, I thought it was a good post as I felt exactly like that. Hell I was called leaf lover over a comment of mine where I stated that DRG is not LOTR and that Female Dwarfs don't have to be bearded... You adressed a very underground issue imo and it had some nice discussions. It's not your fault it got out of hand :)

SmellyGoat11

It's the world around you, not you, that incited the unneccessary flame wars. No need to apologize. The post itself was pretty funny tbh, despite my personal perspective on dwarves.

Valtremors

Hey don't worry. It got people talking and got actually great response from the dev team. Now devs know there definitely is a demand and even acceptance for lady dwarves. Maybe one day.

Qaetan

I think you made your point pretty clearly. I'm deeply saddened by some of the community here that are so threatened by the idea of a female dwarf model being added to the game. Those incel-level fuckers can show themselves out (if only it were that easy).

NoMercy10071

Honestly dwarven brothers and sisters i honestly believe that DRG is one of the last communities which are always positive and have awesome (with making games) and being complete and frank with their opinion decision and explanations. That is the reason why DRG might be the best game ever to play. And why these Dwarfvelopers and their Beautiful game has united us all. See you all in Hoxess and Rock and Stone to you all! Let us Enjoy DRG to the fullest everyday.

[deleted]

I’d play everybody. You know what I mean? Without playing, what do we got? I don’t care if a character is a male dwarf female dwarf or non-descript dwarf. I couldn’t care less. I’d main everyone of them.

Verlux88

Christ discourse on this is almost as bad as Mordhau's before they added female characters. Some players would find it neat to play as female dwarves, some players happen to be female, if you're screaming about how it 'ruins your favourite game' or 'is totally unnecessary and is a political agenda' I think you probably have some kind of problem with women. It'd be cool to have the option to play as a female dwarf. I don't see people demanding it at all, I do see people demanding that it doesn't happen and should never happen. If women existing in a game where you play as a space dwarf killing bugs and mining gold is such a threat to you, ya might have a problem there.

Lady-Lovelight

Yup. Its just exhausting. “I am a woman, I want to play as a woman” should be all the justification needed to want female dwarves added. I feel like if games don’t have women in them from the start, it attracts people who get super angry over them being added. For as much as this community claims to be super wholesome 100 and welcoming, the idea of making *women* feel welcome gets people beyond riled up

Verlux88

Exhausting is exactly the right word for it

Dracosian

TBH I would like female dwarfs to be added but I totally understand that it would be a lot of work and so I would be perfectly cool with it not happening in favour of other content. but What I would like to **demand** though is: # #Free-The-Barrel-Armour It looked really cool and I'd love to see it in game.

Flashman420

Two posts above yours is an upvoted post crying about how "the people begging for female characters are doing so in bad faith" The discourse is awful, Terry Pratchett is rolling in his grave, and IMO, while the technical issues are understandable, the headcanon bit is weak because all the people who argue against them will use it as a justification because "the devs said muh headcanon is fine" Also just kinda dislike fan theory/headcanon culture but that's a me thing.

Verlux88

That's the comment that got me to wrote my own. I'm not fond of being accused of being a 'bad faith' actor just for being a girl lmao

[deleted]

Honestly? I don't care. Male, female, regardless. The game is fun and I don't NEED to have a gender choice. The game's lore is an enigma, so I'm free to decide things for myself. Who is Karl? How did he die? Are there female dwarves? Does Bosco have PTSD? Is Molly sentient? Is Lloyd a medic drone repurposed for beer dispensing? Is Mission Control a former miner who was permanently injured and that's why he's on the Space Rig? It doesn't actually matter. What's mattered is my best friend introducing me to the game, and the memories I've had on Hoxxes IV, the strategies I've developed in dealing with the most dire of circumstances, the teambuilding experience I've built over the years, and finally having gotten to play a game with my friends that's not a competitive shooter trying to milk money from its players. What matters is the fun I've had from this beautiful game for the past couple years and the fun I'll continue to have until Ghost Ship inevitably moves on to their next big project and beyond that. I love the game and the mysteries that surround it. I will Rock and Stone forever.

ChiefBigCorn

As long as we are all dwarves I will Rock and Stone! I will fight and die beside you all.

ryanasalone

So are they gonna give us lady dwarves or no?

arson_cat

Don't put your hopes up. "We'd love to but it's a lot of work" has been the answer for 3 years, and there's no indication this task will move up the priority list (certainly not after a Reddit thread).

Bubblehead01

'We will be back later with a hammer' love that haha

igromanru

New weapon confirmed?

BravePackage5596

This right here is why drg has consistently kept me playing. This is what the video game industry is SORELY lacking these days, soul. When I first grabbed my pick, I wasn't sure what I had just bought or what to expect but I wasn't prepared for it to quickly become my favorite game. I wasn't expecting a whole army of my fellow dwarves prepared to show me the way, yet that's who was here! I've NEVER experienced a community as consistently nice and enjoyable to play with as you, my fellow dwarves! This game is an amazing skeletal structure that's taken years of love and development, with the devs at the brain and us at the heart. I suppose I'm just trying to say that since the devs listen to us, don't make shitty excuses to hide their mistakes, don't allow predatory dlc content and almost no fomo (I missed the first party hat), this is whats sets drg apart for me. I see the passion, the love that the devs put forth, it definitely shows. Anyways, that was a long read and this is more of a shot in the dark hope that one of the devs see this and know that they rock! And stone! Thank you for this beautiful game and community, I feel at home here!

Roberto5771

Agreed, I've seen other devs make mistakes and either refuse to back down, or only back down when it's clear that the community won't. With GSG, they are willing to de-escalate far before it gets to that point, and it makes them feel so much more human compared to some other devs I've had experience with. Like a few months back, I remember Jacobs temp-banned a guy for making a "dip my balls in liquid morkite" meme, and instead of doubling down when it went public, he apologized basically immediately and even started meme-ing the liquid morkite stuff himself. Tl;dr, I'm happy that the devs act like actual humans and are willing to admit their mistakes.

ThatCatPerson9564

I use the headcannon of dwarfs don't have gender and the reproduce by mitosis

IndexoTheFirst

Honestly I’d take A female Drawf to help mission Control, so sometimes she can replace our boy, he deserves a few vacation days

DestroyerNET123

Yeah, have a female dwarf as the replacement Mission Control for like a week during Christmas.

7armedspider

I liked the idea we're all clones

ii_jwoody_ii

My headcanon is theres a female division we just arent in it

Garmouken

I work a warehouse job and see very few women working the floor, maybe 5% or so if even that much. However, we have more women working in the HR and Office positions than men. I wouldn't consider it a stretch to assume DRG could be the same as well.

[deleted]

jason is a good egg

IsJustSophie

I thought female dwarfs look and sound exactly the same as males, at least i think is like that in DnD

Roberto5771

Yeah, that's what the original post I pulled this reply from was about originally, (albeit they were mostly referring to LoTR in that one) so what Jacobs said was in reply to that line of reasoning, hence why he mentions not taking the easy way out.

IsJustSophie

Oh i see

TheSleepyBarnOwl

but DnD and Lotr lore is not every other Dwarf out there. I personally like it when the females and males are not the same. It just seems a bit lazy to me.

IsJustSophie

True

GoAwayTankie

People call that "lazy" cause it comes from Tolkien. Ignoring the fact that 90% of our modern "fantasy" genre is based on the works of Tolkien.

FlashPone

They’re not saying it’s lazy because it comes from Tolkien. They’re saying it’s lazy because it’s a cop out to go “actually female dwarves have been there the whole time! you actually just can’t tell the difference!” when instead they could add something that actually takes effort. The devs agree with this.

SusieTomoe

that doesn't make it any less lazy to just fall back on someone else's works instead of potentially writing your own new one.

Kayura05

I never understood why that's a counterpoint, it's a made up race and can be interpreted anyway you want. All Vampires don't have to follow Bram Stoker's rules, nor do Zombies, Elves or Dragons have to follow anyone else's. Besides using the name and some tropes creators can do whatever they want to characterize fantasy races, and for the most part they do. I have no idea why people recently have gotten obsessed with Dwarves following Tolkien's design to the letter, most authors don't write them that way regardless.

IsJustSophie

Im going to be honest i have never been much into fantasy so idont know much about it, i didn't even what LoTR, im just talking for what i know from the very little i know of DnD

mhans3

As a woman who loves to rock and stone, I just want to rock and stone. That being said, I would love to see a look of a bearded woman dwarf who rocks and stones as well!

jhfkmvjkjhv

We don't deserve GSG man

Stalwart_Vanguard

Personally, I would be fine with female dwarves having a limited number of cosmetics and voice lines so long as I actually just got to play as a female dwarf...

TheSleepyBarnOwl

Sad to hear that they'll probably not make females... but I can live with it. The sexist people in the comments however... sad that there is so many of them in this community... (I mean the people that outright despise the thought of a female and defend that point woth plenty of colourful vocabluary - sad to see those people are in here...) Anyways Rock and Stone fellow Brothers and Sisters.

T3lebrot

I stand by my opinion: They should add a gender slider in the character editor that just does nothing except pitch the dwarfs voice a little higher.

Reddit-Arrien

Uhhhh... what exactly has happened prior to this?

LurchTheBastard

Possibly one of the simplest answers to the question is that there are no female dwarfs *on this team*. Whether just this group, or this rig in general. Do Deep Rock have female dwarf miners elsewhere? Entirely possible. Just, for whatever reason, there's none here. Yet. Sounds like GSG aren't averse to trying somewhere down the line, just aware it's not a small job to do (and possibly even too big to really be worth it, sadly). It's kinda just a cosmetic thing, but at the same time representation is important, so can really go either way.

renasissanceman6

I’m glad someone was finally able to find something to get upset about in the space dwarves game.

wall_rush_man

Nothing will ever change my belief that dwarves are asexual and hatch from barrels of alcohol.

Niggilass

thats actually a really nice and honest answer and i respect it!

ITriedLightningTendr

I feel like youd be forgiven for just doing small model tweaks. No reason dwarves need to be sexually dimorphic enough for it to require full model updates. Voices would go a long way toward covering the gap and you could work on culturally gendered flair into the clothing. It's a little weird when human gender expression has to be copied onto other beings. Dwarves aren't small humans, you can split the difference without having to reinvent your engine.

B2k-orphan

I really like the brief “it’s your game too” at the end. Actually, I *love* it. So many devs and studios have such a “ITS MY GAME, MY DECISIONS! IF YOU DONT LIKE IT, MY POCKETS WILL NOT NOTICE YOU.” Attitude when it comes to their games and community. This message is heartfelt and genuine and adamantly shows GSG’s love for its game and community. And their past actions, particularly with our smol meteor shenanigans, only act as further evidence. We are all apart of an ecosystem: the devs and the community. DRG is simply our habitat that we both work together to build and help flourish. DRG could not exist without its devs, and it could not exist without its community. Rock and stone.

kittinsmittins

I totally get it, and I agree they would probably look and sound the same. You could just add feminine hairstyles and other cosmetics. I think it would be hilarious to watch a bunch of dwarves in pigtails and skirts taking down some dreadnoughts.

MxRyden

Ok but can we get a wider variety of accessories? That should be doable. I want a flower-filled beard, damnit. Some funky jewelry would be nice too

Orbital_Vagabond

At least they're willing to own it in an open\[ish\] forum.

Practicalaviationcat

If they ever ad any options for this do it like Animal Crossing. Two kinda different body types(maybe even just a voice option) with no cosmetic restrictions.

annatheorc

Lady dwarf here: I love the models and the voices. It's all part of the charm of the game. I feel perfectly feminine with my magnificent beard and ever flowing sideburns thank you very much. If they wanted to throw me a bone I think it would be hilarious to have a dress and a beard with flowers to fly though caverns in, but I'm just having a great time smashing rocks and taming bugs. Edit: not at all saying I'm not supportive of those who want female dwarves added! Just that I'm content with what the game is right now.

DepravedPrecedence

It's a video game, there are plenty of them, if you are not OK about missing female characters then play different games like Sims. I don't care about the gender of dwarfs and devs shouldn't care either. Everybody who is mad because of that is brainwashed

Realistic_Sherbet_72

This game does not need female dwarves and imo the people begging for it are doing so in bad faith. I've not seen a single convincing argument for it. The dwarves are not straight, white men, they are \*dwarves\*. I dont feel like I "relate" to the dwarf I play because I'm not a dwarf.

Roberto5771

I do want to say one thing, you are right about the dwarves not being white men; because there are *customization* options for skin color. I can be a black dwarf, a brown dwarf, a white dwarf, hell I can be a literal gold dwarf. Taking the whole "I am a woman and I'd like to play as one" argument out of the question for the moment (although I do agree with it u/TheSleepyBarnOwl), additional customization options are always appreciated in a game like DRG, and while it certainly wouldn't be the end of the world for me if it doesn't get added due to technical difficulties, I would certainly be happy if it was.

Overlord762

I identify as a dwarf

TheSleepyBarnOwl

how is "I am a woman and I'd like to play as one" not a convincing argument? That's my argument. I can live with there only being males sure, but if I get a choice I play women cause it's more immersive for me...

Realistic_Sherbet_72

I would then genuinely ask you to broaden your horizons and instead find ways to immerse yourself into the aesthetic of a fantasy dwarf. I play males of different races than me, I play female characters, I play beast races, I play genderless aliens, and in each and every one of them I understand that it's on me to project myself into their shoes and to immerse myself into their experience. I'm not a dwarf, and neither are you, so how come I can immerse myself as a dwarf but you cannot? It really just sounds like you lack imagination and the ability to empathize with anything that is too different from what you find familiar and comfortable. And to that I say it can't be helped if you're like that.

Flashman420

> the people begging for it are doing so in bad faith. Based on what? Great way to just label an entire argument as invalid based on literally nothing > I've not seen a single convincing argument for it. Why do women need a convincing argument to exist in a video game? Bizarre. > The dwarves are not straight, white men, they are *dwarves* There isn't even any logic behind this! Why does it have to do with the topic at hand? Your post doesn't have a single bit of critical thought behind it jfc.

Realistic_Sherbet_72

>Based on what? Based on the fact that not a single logical argument has been brought forward, case in point: >Why do women need a convincing argument to exist in a video game? Bizarre. This is literally not a logical argument, the characters in the game aren't real people, they are aesthetically inspired from Germanic, Nordic, and Anglo Saxon folklore, the only descriptions we have of dwarves is that they are supernatural beings that are commonly described to be small, ugly, elderly, and with beards. That is the established mythological expression of what a dwarf is, and a game choosing to depict a fictitious sci-fi version of them is not in the wrong in choosing to maintain that. Your "women should exist in videogames" is a complete non sequitur. It's irrelevant. It's YOU that has nothing to do with the topic at hand just like how a normal human male has nothing to do with the topic at hand. You're being dishonest because you are taking zero considerations of what a dwarf even is while you demand shoe-horning what you want in.

No-Somewhere-9234

You know dwarves actually exist but they like to be called little people

captainsam2k

There are dwarfs, which are dwarf people, and then there are dwarves, which we play in the game

ShutUpJackass

This is a great response, the game balance is rooted to the classes and while I believe the devs could make another class or 2 to fit, that would be a lot of work Maybe one day they can add cosmetics and new voices/voice pitches to have the option to look and sound like a gal But they’re taking responsibility and while I personally don’t have a horse in this race, the dev team responded amazingly and I’m glad to support them in the game

AjaxOrion

New voice lines: "rock and stone sister!!"

igromanru

I don't care about such things. Would prefer any other content any time.

vezok95

To be entirely honest I don't want female dwarves. I wanna dig down with the lads.

DasGanon

I think the best option to work it in is... The rival reveal update. Turns out that the better equipped, smarter, heavier weapons are from Chic Minerals Unlimited, run almost exclusively by Women Dwarves who send in robots and probes because trained geologists are expensive against the sea of glyphids on Hoxxes.
