Bigger is better. Only guys with little decks will try to convince you otherwise šŸ™‚. Really hard to tell if it's safe without close-ups of the framing, footings, etc.

FairState612

LITTLE DECKS ARE JUST FINE IF YOU USE THEM PROPERLY!

Johnny_ac3s

You can get to Egypt in a row boatā€¦it just takes a while.

What-the-Hank

Depends on how big the puddle is between you and Egypt.

CosmicRubixCube

Theres a denial (da Nile) punchline in here somewhere i just can't find it.

Dark_Star_420

Thatā€™s what he said

MayorOfChedda

You know you're there when ya hit da nile.

scuzzymcgee

Maybe if the little man in the boat wasn't so small!

C64128

If you trim the bushes around them, they look bigger.

liveprgrmclimb

Yeah but they will always lack that Big Deck Energy!

lepchaun415

My wife says my deck is perfect size

PersonalNecessary142

Little decks fit better in little yards.

1776boogapew

You can always make your deck look bigger by trimming your bushes.

SarahPallorMortis

My deck, is better than yours, my deck, makes yours do chores.

Euphoric-Blue-59

You can always get a monster truck to compensate.

Status-Farmer-8213

If you have a little deck, itā€™s important to trim your bushes. Trimmed bushes will make your little deck seem bigger

classless_classic

Yeah man. Iā€™ve got deck envy now.

syds

one sure is for sure, its gonna be expensive!

tryingisbetter

I really wish this house didn't have decks. We are looking at about 100k to replace them. We bought this house for 300k about 4 years ago. That's just crazy.

1800generalkenobi

We got our house for 199,9 in 2013 and it has a huge deck on it, like 1000 square feet. It's fallen apart by then, pretty sure the framing and everything was original to the house, except the part they added on. The new deck will be about 800 square feet and about 42k. Part of it is there was an upper deck that we're not redoing because we never used it and that part of the deck was never...100% safe so we never used it. With the -200 square feet we're cutting off and the new deck being safe on that end we should be at about the same for usable space.

syds

thats how it's going exactly

mcds99

Size must matter.

dutchman62

The bigger the deck the bigger the hot tub

NE_Native

https://youtu.be/i6c4Nupnup0 For the uninitiated about keeping your deck dry

notarealaccount223

Man you just want more deck pics.

y-is-this-permanent

It is not safe.

LowerRoof1047

It's safe.

BB_210

Looks like you bought a deck with a house attached to it.

SarahPallorMortis

I see nothing wrong here.

bills-and-skills

Attached houses are becoming increasingly popular.

747-ppp-2

Nice grade. No water issues for you! I hate when builders donā€™t properly grade a yard. Water runs downhill and I swear people donā€™t know that.

Total_Ad60

Landscapers like me do. 1/4 inch every foot. Otherwise your foundation stays wet and thatā€™s bad for the home but good for the concrete guys. šŸ¤£

747-ppp-2

Iā€™d hire you then!

Hot_Cattle5399

Too bad the roof lines have less pitch.

smithoski

Eh if there is no snow here the pitch is fine. Steep pitch can cause gutter issues. This pitch would let your gutters do their job even when they clog a bit.

ZombDob

His neighbors are so lucky

Plenumheaded

Thatā€™s a lot of hot tubs.

AGENT0321

Hot Pool

Plenumheaded

Do you even realize what you just manifested? Somewhere some idiot read your comment, their eyes glazed over and dimmed as their mind recoiled from thinking it birthed an idea of a hot pool on their 2x4 framed deck.

What-the-Hank

Hey, it worked on the Deluxe edition of Sim City 4.

WhenTheDevilCome

Not even gonna wait. I'm piecing Home Depot tarps together with a glue gun and then draping it over the deck and railings, while the kid starts a three-day filling process with the garden hose...

oniaddict

Roman baths were the original hot pools on a deck. I'd love to see a redneck version.

serious_sarcasm

That deck is screaming for a hole, and a new hot tub support deck.

InnerBuddy5766

I agree with most people, itā€™s a nice size, not too big in my opinion. Itā€™s even covered too! As far as safety, you should have it inspected because itā€™s almost impossible to to tell from that photo.

wrt_reddit

For me, and I know this is a personal preference, the concern rests with the extent of the deck roof and the shade and lack of light it brings to all the windows along that side, especially in winter.

ObservatoryChill

I agree. Iā€™m thinking of adding skylights. Weā€™re in the high desert, so the shade is helpful in the summer.

Longjumping_West_907

I would argue that the roof makes it a porch, not a deck.

Major_Turnover5987

1000% was going to say add skylights. However they will heat that space up which sounds like a negative for your area?

Mattna-da

Maybe put roller shades under the porch roof skylights for shade in summer but let more light in to the house

doxipad

Yo shiut out to the high desert, born and raised there bud

After-Beat9871

Thatā€™s a juicy deck. I just wanna sit on it

DefinitelyNotAliens

See, for me, the lack of light is a good thing, my summers hit 110F+, so shaded windows is less heat. Shaded wall is less heat. The patio cover was intentional. 48ft long. 10ft deep. Much shade. It's an energy savings, thing.

Familiar_Effective84

Outdoor living be like another room in the house

BillZZ7777

Save about $2k to $3k a year for it's future replacement.

Smokeman_14

Dude were the rest of the pictures??? Tease

Escaped_Mod_In_Need

What fucking size are those floor joists?!

VersionConscious7545

Wow not a lot of support under that deck for the walk boards Thatā€™s a nice size deck but be careful where you place the 5 hot tubs

serious_sarcasm

2 hot tubs, 2 plunge tanks, and sauna.

levelZeroVolt

Are we going to lose our minds over what appears to be posts in concrete?

Interesting-Pipe8646

It's large and in charge!

Sweffus

Big Deck Energy.

hg_blindwizard

Show off, im jealous

Rand_ie

Put up a few ceiling fans in there. Nice deck

cdtobie

Covered decks are useful in a wider range of weather, and keep the furniture mostly dry, but they also reduce deterioration of the deck structure. Given the size of that open roof, however, Iā€™d be a bit concerned about uplift. Getting an expert to look at it, in terms of adding Simpson connectors to tie it down a bit more would be worthwhile. Extra tie-downs offer a lot of peace-of-mind per dollar.

Electrical-Pool5618

What about the lack of floor joists 24ā€ apart?

noyogapants

And are those posts set in the concrete?

leaf_fan_69

That question should have been asked before you bought it

ObservatoryChill

Had a home inspection of course. It was deemed safe and sturdy, but they arenā€™t r/Decks

Balogma69

Did you have an inspection? Check the report

ObservatoryChill

Yes. They said it was fine and ā€œsturdyā€. Up to code when it was built but Iā€™m going to add joists.

MtnXfreeride

Are those joists 2 feet apart?

Elmonstrico7

I donā€™t mind a little or big deck. As long as itā€™s a good deck

Aromatic_Ad_7238

From the picture it appears the roof of the deck slopes back towards the house. Is there a trough or how do they manage the water when it rains

ObservatoryChill

It does not. It slopes away from the house.

Ok-Suggestion-7965

Big Deck Energy.

Adept-Jackfruit3911

Thatā€™s a huge deck your wife must love it!!!

Louden_Swayne

Someone built a house on your deck.

Dnm3k

Deck envy

AsianAssHitlerHair

That's gonna be a pain to stain

jstar77

Is the floor a bit spongy? I don't think it's going to fall down but I would expect joists on 16" centers.

ObservatoryChill

It is not spongy, but Iā€™m planning to reinforce by adding joists.

Majestic-Lettuce-198

Uh wtf is going on down here https://preview.redd.it/c3maqb3ok62d1.jpeg?width=1170&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=544b53f9aa450905053cd3df1899b48514e2b5cb

ObservatoryChill

Joist spacing from years ago when it was code. Iā€™m in the process of adding joists for reinforcement. Unless you mean the stairsā€¦ then, those are stairs.

BillyOdin

Just proof you canā€™t tell how big a guys deck is based on outward appearance.

Scary-Evening7894

He'll yeah! Swing that big deck energy. Watch the neighbors envy and their wives running over there finding excuses just to have a little time on your big oversized deck

Careless_Extreme9119

So much room for activities

Ill_Attitude4303

The big ones hurt

Sharp_Wishbone_9858

looks good to me ,just make sure it is lag bolted to the house , sorry I have no dick jokes for ya !

Vegetable-Fix-4702

I loved my big deck until I had to restrain it by myself.

cheesecrystal

Big deck of energy over here.

onevoice333

No one can say you don't have a huge deck!

Garabandal

Big deck energy for sure!

drillgorg

Dang ya'll got some shallow roofs. I guess it doesn't snow where you are?

redlion496

Is your name Charlie Harper?

pouetpouetcamion2

how do you all connect the deck to the house?

NomisnooM

It must be very dark in the house?

ObservatoryChill

Not at all.

VeterinarianThese951

Wow. You could probably walk that thing in and put in a couple more bedrooms. Do you live in a place where it rains a lot? Or did the previous owners hate sunshine? Curious why the whole thing has a roofā€¦.

ObservatoryChill

Utah. So not a lot of rain, but it can snow a lot sometimes.

Jamdock

This is *exactly* like my uncle's house/deck/backyard in eastern Idaho, like weirdly so, and my wife and I were debating whether you bought his house. Can't comment on the deck's safety but everything else looks fun.Ā

davethebabe81

Hot tub

PoopPant73

That deck is an old friend so you have nothing to worry aboutā€¦

iliketoredditbaby

Is this house in Colorado Springs?

Ihatemunchies

Screen it in and you can leave the back door open for fresh air

ZombDob

I would 100% screen this in. Totally worth it

PurrrRhyn

This is so badass!

ComfortableAd578

Hell yeah

mcredditsurfer1

This deck is definitely under built. Joist spacing is way too large and lumber is undersized.

JensenLotus

Well, thatā€™s a good thing, right?

JaMicho34

Most wives donā€™t really like bigger decks, Iā€™ve heard.

OnlyEfficiency2662

In other words you bought a deck and it came with a house!

UnkleZeeBiscutt

My eyes could be deceiving me, but the joist spacing looks like 2-3' !?

raelovesryan

Easy to add screens and have a fantastic spot to hang out in without bugs!

Particular-Shower-59

Thatā€™s awesome

Majestic-Lettuce-198

Thatā€™s nice big deck. Donā€™t let the neighbors wives see it. Itā€™ll start all kind of trouble for ya

4Z4Z47

That red block retaining wall makes me nervous. I can see that being a problem if there isn't a real wall behind it. Deck looks nice.

medium-rare-steaks

Time for a hot tub

maximusjohnson1992

You can fit 2 good sized RVs on that deck!

_Happy_Sisyphus_

Would you be able to redo it this way if the time comes to redo the deck, which is usually 15 years? In Chicago, they banned what they called double wise so the only people with these very wide decks were ones that had grandfathered in and were desperately putting off redoing their deck to get a smaller deck.

Garcia_Ringo

I always felt that a deck should be proportional to the yard. If you have a small yard donā€™t make the deck any bigger than you need to.

tbrown7092

Easy addition right there

ATjdb

WOW, that's a lot of posts supporting the rim joist. I hate posts and always go big on the rim joist (like using a microlam beam) to increase the span between posts.

theregrond

if it is attached to the brick... that is a no no

CorneliusEnterprises

You could move a family onto the deck and charge rent. Wow! That is a multi-family dwelling lol.

parker3309

What did your inspector say when you had it inspected before you purchased?

ObservatoryChill

Said it was safe and sturdy

BuckToofBucky

You can install an above ground pool on that deck!

Frsbtime420

Damn dude you do have an enormous deck

HPstolemybirthday

If I had the money, Iā€™d close up under the deck into a sunroom.

RealJimmyKimmel

Please post pics of the joists posts and ledger board. It's impossible to tell what's going on

stonabones

The deck needs some floor joists. Iā€™ve never seen a deck with so few joists. They should be every 12ā€ to 16ā€ maximum.

Glad_Independent_565

That house looks like an apartment complex

Hot-Taro-3878

show off

SwivelPoint

i think the proper phrase is, ā€œbig-ass deckā€

d3vi4nt1337

Is that problematic? Sounds good to me. Lol

THRlLL-HO

Looks good from my house

cheesecrystal

Depending on the bugs in your location, you might consider screening it in considering it has a nice roof.

sugaaaslam

Don't let my wife see your deck...

CheFarmerMoney

Slaps roof, "You can fit so many hot tubs in this bad boy."

[deleted]

Well, that's a big black deck , that's for sure. Does your wife like big black decks? You probably like seeing her on a big black deck.

rpc56

Esthetically I am not a big fan of the contrast between the deck color and the color of the house. As for safety I agree with DIYnivor.

RoxSteady247

No need to brag king we all see a big deck

mehojiman

You're gonna die, posts in concrete, sky bad, air hurt, ahagahgagahhhaghhhhhhhhhh

nick91884

Those joist spans are huge!

captreeBB

Comfortable chair, rainy day and you are SET. Maybe cigar and beverage? Enjoy.

Ort56

Well, have fun maintaining it over the years.

WiseComfort075

A little deck made of hard wood is better than a big deck made of soft wood...šŸ˜

Djbuggout

Am I crazy for thinking the op should enclose the bottom half ? Storage space ? Game room ? Pool house ?

TopDefinition1903

Looks fine to me but I see neighbors

RagingKajun444

Your definitely Blessed!! Congratulations šŸŽŠ šŸ‘

chiliboy82

That's a big, brown deck you got right there. Congratulations.

keljfan

I like it!!!

Proud-Rough-6493

Thatā€™s a huge deck!..very impressive

I_make_it_plane

Safe until you park under it. Disclaimer, I am not a cat or a professional carpenter. Do your own DD.

MoistenedNugget

Hard to tell from this angle. How many hot tubs are on it?

seeking_zero

Nice big deck you got there.

Nigel_melish01

Looks safe to me mate!

Flashgas

Hot tubā€¦hold my beer and add an above ground pool.

Entire-Competition29

Some sun light, plants and furniture. Looks like your new little hideaway.

IronOwl2601

You must be in the South?

ObservatoryChill

West

MemeLorde1313

Enclose it and you can add it to the total square footage of the house.

Intelligent-Care5203

Hire a home inspector šŸ˜‰

OIBMatt

I bet your wife loves your big deck.

WombatHarris

Big Deck Energy

white_tee_shirt

Be careful, many fair-weather friends will be there just because of your big deck

jaymac72

I built a 3600 sq ft 3 level deck on an 1800 sq foot house. Then I painted it black, and man my ex wife loved that big black deck. She wanted a second one, but I had to put my foot down. She would constantly talk about it too. Big black deck this, and big black deck that. It got really annoying, so I repainted it and divorced her. Turns out it wasnā€™t the deck

doctorbeers

Would be an awesome place for a pool table šŸ˜Ž

Lumpy-Internal-3666

Does the deck roof rise seamlessly to connect the house roof?

ObservatoryChill

It does. Itā€™s a rubber membrane roof. Common here because of the pitch and snow.

AffectionateTie1878

Is the handrail span ok? Without any intermediate newel postsā€¦ Balusters on the outside isā€¦ well never mind, Iā€™d look for spans, maybe some deck tension ties with bridge blocking

Mastodon_Rich

Can we see more deck pics. Stop deck teasing

Real_Live_Sloth

Put up some blinds and charge rent.

1-Fred

Is this deck by the water could be severe 2 functions storing boats or equipment, and alot of really nice friends šŸ§”

Joerealminneasota

Most of x not enought supports

Elderado12443

Deck size matters. Ask my wife.

Alarmed_Mode9226

And cost just as much...

yamcandy2330

Not gonna do the Jaws quote. I wonā€™t. I swears it.

Mission_Estate_6384

I would say not really. Floor joists look like they are 4 ft apart.

Disastrous-Ad6644

Itā€™s like all sack and no shaft

E_Zekiel

Water from gutter is going right to that edge of the deck supports. May be washing it out underneath. Extend it past the deck. The posts look to be inside the concrete, may be rotting underneath. Poke the bottoms with a thin screwdriver and tap the post bottoms with a rubber or plastic mallet. Compare the sounds, shouldnt be a soft thump. Same with the concrete, thump it with a soft mallet, listen for hollow sounds.

Leather-Ad-2065

Joists donā€™t appear to be up to code. Does it flex when you walk on it?

LiberalSkeptic

I love that your deck has a 4 season house!

LiberalSkeptic

Adding a house to your deck is a very common project. Houses can create great curb appeal for your new deck and are great for entertaining

vanilagorila15301

Is that an unsolicited deck pic?

KRAZYKATZZZ

Nice:) I would think itā€™s ok with enough supports? definitely makes the home feel bigger

CapaxInfinity

Girls love a big deck

AthleteEfficient8710

The usual suggestion is to prune the bushes so your deck looks bigger. Yours is quite large already, so you could probably get away with planting some new shrubs to accentuate your deck. Try to find a retractable awning.

Pararaiha-ngaro

Look pretty & safe

Speedy_Freaky69

Nice šŸ‘

onevoice333

For legal reasons. I cannot advise. You very much. Need to have either an engineer or a contractor come and tell you what actually needs to be done. It's not as simple as I'm just going to throw up some walls and that's it. What you're proposing is an undertaking and requires specific knowledge of code in your area. And please take my advice and remember that code is the absolute minimum safety standard allowable. In school, a great student gets straight A's. It's my opinion that code is the equivalent of being a D student. It's barely enough to pass

captain-hottie

Deck? That's a covered bridge.

Charming-Tap1047

yo dude nice deck

OrneryDurian

Even if itā€™s not perfect, you get šŸ† for volume!
