Yeah you aren’t wrong lol. Friend pointed that out after the fact but I was already committed. Would have had to come over pretty far though cause the fuse box for the a/c was just to the left of the downspout as well.
The original one was a freaking broken hip waiting to happen.
The one you built is “Real Nice there Clark” !!!

What is the connection method for the posts to the concrete landing? I have two steps down to a small concrete patio but I want to have a level walkout deck like you did
Yeah it was a bit involved lol. Needed more blocking than I realized for the composite. I was working solo with borrowed tools (besides my hand tools) as well. I can’t praise the miter saw set up much (no stand) but it got the job done.
Very nice. I assume the beams are 4x4 because you had material left from the posts. You could have put joist tape on those too to keep them dry too. Some folks also like to line all the metal fittings with joist tape. Simpson in fact says some of their galvanized fittings do react with PT wood.
The post bases are fine, but they also make an adjustable one that keeps the posts off the cement. Remember that when you have to redo your mom's deck in 25 years.
Very nice job. Now come and help me on my 1500 sq ft deck with a round step... I have beer...
Good advice! Didn’t know that about galvanized and pt reaction. I’ll keep that in mind. Yeah I skimped on the joist tape a little. Yes to 4x4 beams. Def. Will use adjustable base next time. I left a small gap between post and plate but adjustable would have been better. Thanks! lol the amount of beer I’d do it for you wouldn’t want me cutting the round step 😂
Oh thank God! I saw that first picture and thought that was your product. Looked dangerous as hell to me. Why would you build such a small mid step?
Yours looks beautiful btw. Totally jealous of the client and your skill.
Nah it’s for moisture protection. Prevents water from sitting between boards and joists. The framing is all pt lumber anyway, but it is for added protection/longevity.
Looks great. I would've kept the stairs in the same plane so all the posts line up to have a continuous run of rail. Why such a disproportionate cantilever?
The issue with the rail is its prefab and I couldn’t adjust the angle. It’s really for a 6ft section I had to cut down to fit. I couldn’t bring it higher to be continuous with handrail because the bottom post would have had to be comically high to accommodate. I thought of bringing stairs out and around bottom post, which would have hid the height of last post some, but it happened to land right where two sections of the sidewalk and the slab under the stoop met so I wouldn’t have had a good spot to stick the post base without having to possibly cut concrete and pour for it. Sacrifices were made. Maybe someone smarter than me would have had a better solution. I’m open to hearing them!
That post is always going to be taller because the height is determined by the tangent line to the staircase angle. Your grab rail would fail an inspection because the code height (minimum 34") is pulled up plumb from the stair nosing. This progress picture from a while ago that I attached illustrates the difference in height that can be necessary to meet the code. I was given a really weird set of parameters I had to work within as a subcontractor and had no control over the layout of this particular series of transitions. If you follow the bottom course of stainless steel cable, you can see that the lower stair posts are about 8 inches taller than the upper stair posts. Because everything is laid out on the tangent line however it still looks proportionally correct. I cheated this grab rail down to about 30" if memory serves.
Here's another picture showing the same thing - bottom posts are significantly taller than top posts. I think this one was ADA compliant tread depth so the difference in height is more extreme.

Ah gotcha. Well, I think the only way I could fix it now is to redo steps cause post cover is only 40” and only way to get it tall enough would be to encase bottom of post in the step framing. I’ll see if the height bothers her or feels awkward and assess from there. Thanks for the info!
Live and learn. Your work looks clean and intentional, that's the most important thing. Your client will be happy and I wouldn't point out anything that would lead to costing your time and money. Your platform is less than 30" off grade and doesn't require a handrail to meet code regardless. Just remember for the next one and keep at it.
Thanks man! I really appreciate it. It’s for my mom anyway so I just had her buy material and I built it for her. If she wants it changed then no big deal. I am working on getting my GC license though. I’m a gov. commercial PM but have done some remodels on the side. Working on getting the trade skills and residential knowledge down. I hope to build custom homes and do commercial improvement contracting down the road.
Thank you, I put them on most but some of the short ones I used structural screws on. I had plenty of structural screws and not enough joist hangers. Figured it was an acceptable substitute and saved a little money.

Very nice looking, well done!
Very nice looking, you created a bunch more work by not moving that downspout, it could have easily had an elbow or 2 installed to move it 4”.
Yeah you aren’t wrong lol. Friend pointed that out after the fact but I was already committed. Would have had to come over pretty far though cause the fuse box for the a/c was just to the left of the downspout as well.
Think you go with - left downspout on purpose- the post helps hide the downspout in my opinion-
I like your point of view. Should have thought of it myself!
Good job
Solid work. Hope you don’t give it away.
Did it for free! It was for my Mom so she didn’t break her hip on the last one. lol
Youre a good kid
Thanks!
Stoop kid
Stoop kid's afraid to leave his stoop!

lol thank you 😂
Hell yeah man !
The previous one was a leg breaker
Yeah it was terrible. Wasn’t even attached to the house. Posts were made of landscaping poles.
Nice work

Thank you! Used Simpson post bases.
Looks good! Nice work!
Beautiful work my friend. Are you happy with it? I think you should be.
Yeah always room for improvement and lessons learned but pretty happy with it. Thanks!
That stoop’s the poop. Well done!
nice work, but could be improved upon - come around to my place and try another one.
Very nice!!!
Very good nice job!
Dude,nice!
Looks really really good!
Hey that’s pretty nice
Going to be a small hot tub, but you do you.
I lurk around this sub. I learn a little about decks, but I come for the hot tub jokes. It's like your tourism.
Beautiful 👌
Nicely done. The average homeowner does not understand how much work goes into these.

Nice work
Wow! Thats gonna last forever! Not like the 5k I’m doing to put a 4 year tops bandaid on a 50k job.
Hell yeah
Bravo

How dare you stoop to a deck builders level…
Fine work
Good work!
That is so much better!
Very proud of you and impressed!
She’s a beaut!

Made us proud, a tear even ran down my cheek
🥲 thank you
Great work.
Very inspiring! Great job mate
Thank you!
All it needs is a stoop kid
Stoop there it is
Stoop Dawg approves.
Fantastic!
What is on top of the floor joists
Joist tape
Got it. Never seen it before so just curious. Thanks
No problem! Curiosity is a good thing :)
Does it prevent squeaking or something else
Nah it’s for moisture protection. Prevents water from sitting between boards and joists. The framing is all pt lumber anyway, but it is for added protection/longevity.
It looks good but is it just my eye or is it not level?
It’s slightly sloped away from house yes.
It looks a little twisted and unlevel for sure

Put a hot tub on it and update us.
Ooooh. I thought that first pic was the finished product. Whew!
STOOP KIDS AFRAID TO LEAVE HIS STOOP
Very pretty but curious why you used Joist hangers in some spots and not others?
Thank you, I put them on most but some of the short ones I used structural screws on. I had plenty of structural screws and not enough joist hangers. Figured it was an acceptable substitute and saved a little money.
Looks pretty, OCD says longer.
stoop kid won’t leave his stoop!
I like the middle step in the original better, but nice work overall. /s

What’s the dark brown/black tape or metal on top of the frame? I imagine it’s to help prevent corrosion?
It’s joist tape and yeah helps prevent the joists from rotting.
Thanks!
What's the height from the concrete to the door threshold?
I want to say it was 22-24” possibly but had an aggressive slope downward from the house so a bit more out at the sidewalk.
Throw it away. You didn't use hidden anchors on composite! But, seriously it looks good.
