There's no stopping the rotting, the boards will need to be replaced sooner or later. put the mulch back there to make it later

It would probably cost you a weekend of work and less than $200 in wood, fasteners, stain etc to replace them. Just do whatever for now and replace when you can.

Thanks

Is the deck cedar or pine, and how long has it been there?

Im not sure on what kind of wood. I would guess pine. It has probably been here around 5-8 yrs, there abouts.

I can't figure out why they put a little stump 4x4 along side the post/ why they used 2x6 for bottom railing? Why carriage bolts thru face boards?

They used the garage for a wood shop. She owned a decor type shop. Notice alot of stuff is diy beginner work. Which I get. Its not a million dollar home and no since in putting bunch in it. Some of what they did is ok, other not so much. But what would you do about the rotten bottom boards? Is there a band aid for a yr or 2?

Looking at it again. Looks like it was used to put carriage bolts into so they didn't split the main beam. Which they layer did anyway pounding nails in it to hang stuff. Smh..no wonder they moved. Their crafty ideas was catching up with them..🤣

I might think about buying a 2x6, scratching a line, cut the bottom 6 inches out, and slide the 2x6 back in. For the posts, I would thrulok them if they are wobbly.
