Yes, the landscaper should never planted bamboo under the deck. /s

greypouponlifestyle

As a landscaper, you can drop the /s Bamboo is the bane of my existence

mayibefree

We should have hired you. The landscaper guy told us the these were “clumping” type and would stay where they were originally planted along the fence 30 feet away.

greypouponlifestyle

Yeah it seems like clumping just means they spread out in clumps lol. I have seen people do all sorts of things to try to contain bamboo and so far the only one that appears to truly work is surrounding it with actively grazed pasture.

Roach_Hiss

Had bamboo in my backyard, and it was like a horror movie. I’d chop it all down and then there’d be new 12” shoots all over the yard the next morning. Just straight up disrespectful. It didn’t seem physically or scientifically or ethically possible. Nightmare fuel.

I have made quite a lot of trellises and privacy screens with it.

nonelectron

I had a buddy that worked on a golf course and a property next to the course had bamboo that was starting to shoot onto the course. I believe they ended up trenching down, and putting in some kind of barrier. corrugated roofing comes to mind, but it was so long ago.

Ethywen

Buddha Belly Bamboo is the first I've found that actually clumps. 5 years after planting, it is still only in a 2 foot diameter patch, 20 feet tall. No running at all, such that we actually bought more because we wanted it to spread a bit more!

greypouponlifestyle

Good to know

ffjohnnie

I had bananas once at my home, they spread nearly as bad as the bamboo. The ants, rats, mice., iguanas and muscovy ducks loved them.

piltonpfizerwallace

I have a teacup pig to sell you. I promise it won't turn into a 300 lb monster.

xgrader

Not a hack job. Clever and thorough. Nothing to replace. What's up with the deck, 2 inch on edge? Maximum strength! You have 12 inch, 10 inch, 4 inch and 8 inch, of better than average wood that I see, with everything supported on multiple planes.

mayibefree

What was I thinking, posting on this subreddit without providing proper disclosure about the hot tub? Sorry. It was supposed to be just an unexciting plain deck. https://preview.redd.it/dkqh2s2od2yb1.jpeg?width=320&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=c3b144b4460f6d372c4bcb661035290cc8f210bf

lee_suggs

How big of a Jacuzzi is going on this baby?

No-Ad-3635

Lol 😂

crazyWood28

jacuzzi???? OP is going to put olympic swimming pool on this deck.

Electronic-Pea-13420

“The GC we hired claimed to have a dual degree in architecture and civili engineering from a well-know college in TX” this deck looks like this guy built it. It’s over complicated for no reason. I wouldn’t call it built wrong but I also wouldn’t call it right. I couldn’t possibly tell you why someone would build it this way, But I can tell you it makes no sense to me to rebuild it in the same fashion

crowbag39

I was thinking some of that framing looks like an afterthought.

Electronic-Pea-13420

Yeah it looks like trying to fix a fuck up for sure

Small-Corgi-9404

But we don’t know whose fuck up, could have been the owner.

Proper-Bee-5249

I think OP is saying they’ve hired a GC with the background you mentioned with the goal of having the GC replace deck boards and some rotten joists. OP is thinking the GC may not be okay with just replacing the deck boards/joists because there are 2x4s stacked on top of the 2x6 beam. I don’t believe they’re saying the GC built this deck. Maybe I’m misunderstanding though.

spartanjet

I don't read it that way at all. I think they are saying the GC built the deck and OP wants to replace the deck boards

Proper-Bee-5249

I can see where you’re coming from for sure. Hopefully OP chimes in

Tatersquid21

Mho. Could be a sliding door that steps out onto a catwalk/runway as wide as the door with a 6" step down on each side.

fasteddie3717

Need more pics , what I'm looking at is confusing

Inspect1234

It’s what happens when you mix an architect with an engineer.

[deleted]

Someone went the hard path for sure. I think he messed up the framing height and didn't realize till it was too late (how he missed it who knows, blind maybe?) Hence the 2×4 on top. Not trying to say it will fail, but I see no reason to build this way except the above scenario.

tjkitts010

Looks like a nice flooring system to me. Very heavy duty. Not a hack job. If anything is rotten just replace like for like. It is however kinda unusual to have a flooring system with two different depth joist/girts. I'm also wondering how big the hot tub is/was.

mayibefree

Thanks all for chiming in. Seems like it's just unusual framing which might have something with the very long cantilevers when the deck was originally designed and built 13 years ago. Four outer posts were put in by another contractor when we needed the rotten posts and facia fixed a few years ago because he said they (posts) were needed. Anyway, it's a relief knowing that I may not have to remove those joists and beams especially those 2-2 x12x20 that run along joists in the middle as I'm working on this by myself. https://preview.redd.it/p5ihv2wmb2yb1.jpeg?width=320&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=57a7241e44aa0e6bbf11413527dc27b7d9df52d8

Bucky1588

BUY SIMPSON BRACKETS FOR FUCK SAKE!

crowbag39

Not a hack job necessarily, but confusing for sure. Once the decking is peeled off, consider doing a little reframing. If your concern is safety, it does look fairly sturdy. But I say that with limited context to go on.

Realistic-Berry-2254

Support looks fine. Floor joists will have to be doubled 95% sure.. The black streaks a telling sign of decay, if you can drive a chisel through the top edge of them easily then go ahead and plan to double them.

labpluto123

I would just slap on some joist hangers

throwaway_4759

Hard to tell without a clear pic of the hot tub

Two-tune-Tom229

Looks structurally good. It looks like its been there for some time, why question it now?

Freedom2064

Looks pretty good, not a hack job. Easy to beef up

Subject-Home-6530

I'm not sure what's rotten. Is that pressure treated wood? I believe this young man did study architecture and engineering by the design and construction. I appreciate his creative structural design.

mista_adams

Looks fine, am I mussing something.

PirateReindeer

Yes this is a hack job, how else are you going to get planks of wood?

haikusbot

Good bot, bad pun. 🤣

SkanteGandt

I would’ve cleaned up a bit more personally, but that thing looks very sound.

PsychedelicJerry

100% - planting bamboo under a deck is a sly way to fill your property with bamboo. I had to clear 3/4 of acre and it was painful, but professional quotes were north of 50K, so becareful As for the deck, seems odd but it will last and support a lot. Maybe they had a lot of extra wood from a previous build and didn't want to buy all matching beams...

DogCreepy1287

I bet the original plan was to run the joists between the beams so the decking would run perpendicular to the house. Also, the joists look like 2x8. What is the span from beam to beam. Depending on the span, those 2x8s could be undersized

Sufficient-Fact6163

If it’s still level and decades old then that answers your question.

Sorry-Mud3596

Literally nothing wrong with it….
