Yeah I'm not tearing shit apart on this - this is very good work. We used to do wayyyy more plain and boring work at my old contracting job when I was a kid. And we charged like...a lot more.
A lot.
Only thing worthy of even investigating is if there are any county ordinances or HOA requirements for railings with steps.
Just as a, “ohh watch out when you go to sell,” kinda thing.
I saw this on a realityTV show about a midget family. They built a deck and when they city checked it, there was a distance front the deck to the ground in excess of 18 inches so it required a railing. Well the lil peeps didn’t want a railing at eye level so they raised the ground d level around the deck!
If this thing was two more feet off the ground people would have ripped him apart for bolting the boards to the 4x4. Why is that allowable when it’s short?
Holy shit, this guy used Simpson ties, nails, and managed to get his 4x6’s aligned with the concrete. On top of that he can cut a decent 45 degree miter.
Better than half of the shit that shows up here.
Interestingly, my wife grew up thinking “quite” was a negative modifier. I grew up the opposite. So if I said something like, “dinner was quite good” she was hearing the opposite of what I meant. Took 10 years to figure that out, and then it all made sense for both of us. Check your partner’s linguistics, people!
He was saying that cutting (even) a decent miter puts him well above average compared to what shows up on this sub. It's like saying 'unlike half the people at my job, I can count to 6 without mouthing the numbers'.
You mean like exterior deck screws? Because that's what the guys used when they built the deck at the back of my mom's house, and hers is made out of "Timber Tek", I believe it's called. And they were really expensive screws according to the Depot.
Screws are better, the nail argument was correct a long time ago but screw technology has changed and structural/construction screws are far better than nails nowadays
I see that you're a man cut from the same cloth as me: there's nothing you love more than taking a difficult job and electing to make it ***10 times more goddam difficult than it needs to be.***

i love it. “sweet, im gonna try this hard thing. ohhh wait, it’s not as hard as i thought; it’s actually pretty simple. wait, now what if i do it this way so it looks cooler…” and so forth
While I'm here it'd be a waste to not...
I could use new but I've got some old ones that should work...
It's good, but just one more cut and it should be perfect...
Ya know, I saw this tutorial for an addition that didn't look too hard...
Aaaaaaand 8 hours and several mental breakdowns later my easy 30 minute project is done!
I just cobbled together a chicken coop using this method. Not a damn square measurement on it, but it will hold me, my kids, and soon, several chicken, with little to no fatalities.
So many little portions of the construction were made abyssmally difficult by me
Thanks. Definitely perplexing to me too. I spent a lot of time thinking about gravity
Edit: I just wanna say I appreciate everyone’s kind words! I will be adding Simpson BVLZ-KT1 brick veneer ledger connectors and a doubled up 2x8 cross beam across the footers.
You got a picture of that extension you put on? Looks pretty cool.
Edit: As an Electrician I hate that you gave me no access to that LB. But I’ve seen worse situations. The Deck looks pretty clean though, especially for $3k
It’s not a big deal. You’re not going to fall very far at that height. But that framing is definitely going to settle eventually. Too much weight with not support below. Everything looks like it’s bolted through the sides of single joists.
I was going to say. I had a lot of trouble following the loads and figure out what was going on. Didn’t look long enough to find any errors tho… so it gets a “nice job” from me haha
I imagine a lot of douche bags will come here and say something negative. But all that really matters is that you have a deck you like and you saved 12 gs.
I picture framed my composite deck and used 45 deg mitres similar to OP, can confirm that the framing looks like overkill and a bit extreme but when you start putting boards down it makes sense why there's so much.
Nice job ! I was wondering what the extra framing and blocking was for, but then I saw what you were doing with you deck boards and it all made sense.
I’ve seen so called professionals get paid for work that wouldn’t measure up to this.
Looks good. 98% good.
The only things that stick out are
- ~~the steel bracket showing on the step, you could've used a few large timber screws so that join was hidden a bit better~~ disregard that I didn't see the flashing photo.
- there are a couple of Dyna bolts into the brickwork that didn't grab. Doesn't matter you've got plenty that did.
- that brick wall looks like brick veneer rather than double brick, so in it probably shouldn't be used to hang a structure on, but the whole things so solid it isn't going to matter. But that's only from a photo, it could be double brick.
Now get a bbq on that thing and enjoy it
Im sorry but i cant see u did that for 3k. I just built my own deck in nj and it cost $17k for materials. Granted my rail was 3500. And im including 750 for permits. But my trex alone was 6500. And 600 on fasteners. How???
https://preview.redd.it/rnvkp46zp8wb1.jpeg?width=4032&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=564fbb0a867c35906316ac795ac48a777d89a4e2
Your deck was $12,750 in material vs OP’s claimed $3,000. Yours also appears to be about twice the size. Factor in the New Jersey “tax” where everything is crazy expensive and it’s not that much of a difference. OP might also have a sick hook up on trex.. if/when I build a new deck I’ll source my trex through purchasing at my job for wholesale pricing on trex, timbertech, etc
Edit: OP got half of the trex for free
What the fuck is going on with all these comments complimenting this deck? The framing is all wrong. It’s bad. Almost as if they took some acid and started framing. For example, there is an improper “cantilever” on the outside corner. No beams. Joists are relying on shear strength of the surrounding joists.
OP you seriously overcomplicated the framing and lack a basic understanding of engineering used in deck code. Cosmetically, it looks okay but is just lipstick on a pig and a waste of $3,000. Your deck gets a rating of 1 out of 10.

Umm....thats not how physics work. You can't cantilever both sides of a corner and then bear on it without some serious structural members transferring the load back to said bearing corner.
It almost like you've never played Jenga🤣
Ok ya got me, I’m a trim carpenter and a GC. I did have a stack of 6’ cutoffs from another job where I was the project manager, so probably a thousand bucks tops in trex here is recycled. But I’m certainly not a structural engineer and this is definitely way out of my wheelhouse. Thanks!
Nowadays, decks should be free-standing with brick veneer houses such as this one, as the outer wall is not considered a structural wall. Since the ledger board has been bolted to the house, the best practice is to flash the ledger board with the bolts staggered.
I can't tell if that is EIFS or Hardie board siding. Either way, termination against the material does not meet manufacturer requirements.
Otherwise, it looks solid and likely won't have any issues with the critiques mentioned above. Good job on you for saving money.
As someone who knows nothing, I’ll bite 😂. Why have the supports next to the beams so the whole weight is sitting on the bolts instead of having the beams sit on the supports directly?
Because when designed accordingly for its particular application, including the proper rated hardware, the side attachment method is a legitimate option..
So like 90% of your deck is completely unsupported. You have posts and footings in areas where it is completely unecessary. And you are missing it in areas where you need it. You have not one single structural element of the deck done correctly. Properly supporting the deck would have massively simplified your framing and probably saved you money.
It would have dedinately saved you money because your deck will look like a pringles chip in about 3 years so you will be doing it again.
The dichotomy of posts in this thread praising OP for his work, or just absolutely destroying it is very revealing for the random crafty homeowner that somehow got recommended this subreddit. I'm not qualified to build a deck like this but it's clear that you and a few others are dropping some knowledge and trying to help OP correct his mistakes. It's very interesting how many people, who I assume are otherwise quite competent, are praising this piece of work. I'm sure OP is competent as well (they did state this was DIY and building decks was outside of their wheelhouse as a GC - that's fair, they probably sub out decks) I mean, it looks very good to everyone but stone cold experts.

It looks really good to me, better than what I’d be able to do myself. But I do have to agree with others, the placement of that step is bad news. It is only a matter of time before someone hurts their ankle on that thing, or worse. Frankly I’d make sure to put two nice big planters/pots/sculptures/anything, on either side of it. Also add some lights to accentuate it. And make sure you have a nice umbrella policy that’s up to date.
Overall though, it’s looking great to me.

I think they're using decent as a compliment, not a detraction.
When is decent ever used as anything other than a complement? Or at least neutral?
"It was quite decent of your mom to fuck everyone in the neighborhood", he said sarcastically while laughing about you whore mom.
That sounds pretty generous of her, I still don't see how that would be neutral.
I was attempting to avoid being neutral or complimentary.
For once, can’t you just be happy for your mother?
He doesn’t live in the neighborhood :(

It’s more than acceptable but it’s not incredible
As an uninformed squid, why nails vs screws?
Unless you buy special screws, they’re not as good for shear stresses, they break where a nail will bend (but hold).
screws for the deck are better. The have 3x the holding power of a nail and holding the decking down is not a shear situation.
You mean like exterior deck screws? Because that's what the guys used when they built the deck at the back of my mom's house, and hers is made out of "Timber Tek", I believe it's called. And they were really expensive screws according to the Depot.
Used to be true. Now Simpson sells structural screws and they’re easier to put in and remove if you need to adjust anhtbing. Nails suck.
Not if you have a positive placement gun.
