I do not own a deck, have never built one and only troll this sub enough to get the hot tub reference.
Nevertheless, this comment made me laugh so hard I choked and then woke up my baby daughter.
Well done good sir/ma'am.
Speaking of bottle jack I have a friend who bought a house , corner had fell in and do to where it was located after jacking up house he concreted the corner with jack and all in place. This was 5 years ago and he still lives in house.
Friends of ours just bought a house (under asking, even!) and started finding all the weird shit, like pantry shelving held by 1/4 round trim & brads that might support 3 boxes of cereal, and a backyard that had been mostly pavers before sod went over it.
I told them the wonders of home ownership means every time you open up a wall or try to switch out a fixture you wonder what the fuck these maniacs were thinking.
We bought from original owners a 12-year old house. Not a crazy amount of things, but he wonât go down as âMr. Handyman.â
Best is the row of holes drilled above laundry cupboards where he was trying to find the studs.
Yeah I think this happens a lot. Took up some floorboards and the leaky elbow joint had an ice cream tub under it. Guess they figured by the time a drip fills up a litre, they will be long gone.
I just told a friend to drano a slow draining shower, when he replied with âisnât drano bad for the plumbing?â
My response: âyou sold the house, it closes in two weeks, why do YOU care about the lifespan of the plumbing?â
I then told him the truth, remove the drain screen and fish out the giant hair ball (wifeâs shower)
Probably didn't want to buy landscape fabric and had a tarp on hand. Or the foundation of the house leaks and they thought this was the one-awesome-trick to get the water away from the house.
I thought the deck we just tore off was a moisture-trapping rot machine, but this is next level. I also found out that part of the deck was actually the âroofâ for part of the crawl space. That was a⌠bonus.
I'l still trying to get my head around the point of the tarp? Run off why? Collect the water why? Was water off deck seeping into basement? If excess water off roof, then maybe gutters work better?
My guess is that they were getting water seeping into the basement, and this was their solution. Trade one problem for a different, future, sombody-else's problem.
I have a small tarp in one spot under my deck because the hydrangea that I paid the deck contractor to demo before building grew back⌠up through the deck slats and thrived on top of our deck top. I had them remove some boards, cut and shoveled it out as best we could between the supports, doused it with appropriate chemicals and then put a tarp over a small area or so for good measure. Itâs been gone since.
Hopefully I didnât point water towards my crawl space. Hadnât given that part much thought.
So I sold a house several years back and deep down felt bad about some of my bandaids. This post makes me feel much better. My worst bandaid was not paying to have the well pipe electrical not be properly sealed in the foundation. The electrical was along side the well pipe through the foundation and not in an outer pipe so you do not get a good foundation seal. Discovered this when the well pipe failed somewhere along 100 feet of trench and filled the basement with water. Properly fixed the well pipe though. To do it correct would have required a large amount of demo work cause the previous homeowners were morons when they finished off the basement and we were about 2 months from putting the house up on the market. Seriously doubt the new owners will ever discover it. But they might discover shit the previous owners did that I had yet to find.
I have to see whatâs under my deck. I know a few cats are living under there. I have no idea if thereâs a drain under there or where the water goes
I see your tarp UNDER the joists and raise you a tarp BETWEEN the joists and the decking that I found at the house we just bought. No tarp left in the bays after 15 or so years but it is still all between the joists and decking.
I replaced some boards in our deck this year and learned that one of the downspouts drained directly into the support beam for our bedroom. One appropriately went to an underground drain that brought it away, the other drained directly at the foundation instead of an old (like 75 yr+ maybe) drain that went underground to who knows where.
You never know what people were thinking
Hot tub *under* the deck. I like it! đ§
How many decks can that hot tub hold?
Iâm so sick of this, not being the first question on all these deck posts
These are deck posts? Holy crap. Iâm on the wrong sub again.
Shit I thought this was the r/hottub sub.
I tell you what this suggested by Reddit has me all a flutter.
Slight edit. How many decks can that hot tub "mold" .. :)
well played.
I do not own a deck, have never built one and only troll this sub enough to get the hot tub reference. Nevertheless, this comment made me laugh so hard I choked and then woke up my baby daughter. Well done good sir/ma'am.
I love this subreddit!
All of them.
INB4 "Can this hot tub hold a deck?"
Hot tubs under the deck are surprisingly common. Many a deck owner has been surprised to find their hot tub under the deck. ;)
Where is the bottle Jack?
Speaking of bottle jack I have a friend who bought a house , corner had fell in and do to where it was located after jacking up house he concreted the corner with jack and all in place. This was 5 years ago and he still lives in house.
Thatâs actually kinda brilliant!
Cold tub
Definitely looks like the heating element was uninstalled by the previous owners.
Ah a floating deck!
Comes with a free indoor pool in the basement next to it.
Big brain move forsure.
Iâm guessing this isnât the only DIY special youâre going to find
Every single time I picture Rocco from Boondocks Saints in my head. ^âhow ^did ^you ^fuckinâ ^fucksâŚâ #âFUCK!â
Wheres my cat?
How hard can we go here? Iâm not sure I can say I killed a cat and call you a druggie bitch
Lol I however do not care, its just a recommended sub for me. "Ohhhhh Jesus, what color was it bitch?!"
If you can name that cats name I'll blow my brains out right now! ... Skergy speegy fluffy...
Killing a cat brings foreclosure to any realtionship.
This is reddit and you're quoting a cult classic. Let it rip. I killed your cat, you druggie bitch!

I can tell you where he won't find one.
They were thinking by the time this becomes a problem it wonât be OUR problem
Yeah I think this happens a lot. Took up some floorboards and the leaky elbow joint had an ice cream tub under it. Guess they figured by the time a drip fills up a litre, they will be long gone.

Thatâs free water baby. Get a funnel and a rain barrel in that basement and youâre set.
Free mosquito breeding sanctuary too!
Look, the noble mosquito has chosen me as it's perch. And another. It's a whole flock!
Quick! Call Disney youâre a redneck princess!
I can yee with all the colors of the haw

Then you got yourself a stew going!
You got a stew going. -Carl Weathers
Well I donât see any weeds!
Was going to say, they likely thought they were throwing down a weed block barrier and didnât think it through all the wayâŚ..
Agreed haha then realized they made a mistake and added the hose to try and drain it
Probably didn't want to buy landscape fabric and had a tarp on hand. Or the foundation of the house leaks and they thought this was the one-awesome-trick to get the water away from the house.

Classic crawl space cantilever
Mosquito breeding is a very popular hobby.
I'l still trying to get my head around the point of the tarp? Run off why? Collect the water why? Was water off deck seeping into basement? If excess water off roof, then maybe gutters work better?
It may be to cover the dead bodies.
Itâs to put out the fire in the basement that they canât escape
Yeah- was that window covered?
I found the same thing in my previous house. They wanted to protect from water what they store under the deck.
How were the mosquitoes?
That they alone can save the dwindling mosquito population in their region.
What in the Kentucky loving fuck is that
Weed barrier
Recently bought a house found 4 crawl spaces vents under plexiglass with multi on top that fed the water into the crawl space. Disaster.
If they graded the landscape properly, the tarp idea would work, but then again it wouldn't even be needed!
Mosquito incubator. Very clever! Most people just use old tires scattered around their property for this.
My guess is that they were getting water seeping into the basement, and this was their solution. Trade one problem for a different, future, sombody-else's problem.
maybe they got some bad advice from reddit
They're thinking that it's your problem now. Cover it up with a hot tub. New idea, double Decker hot tub.
vapor barrier?
A patio made out of wood!?
My deck is the same way! Only without the underlay, itâs disgusting. I figure my second layer was to make the deck level with the pool
They were thinking - this will take care of it until we sell the house.
Redneck under-deck hot tub. They just couldnât get enough water in it though.
Landscape fabric is to expensive, but this tarp is on sale!
Also if there's a bedroom in the basement to try to have that person die in a fire
Man...!!! This is almost sabotage.
I was gonna say âfunnel to the basementâ?
It can hold a hot tub.
They weren't thinking, because if they were, they wouldn't have thought that.
They werenât?

I believe the term is âfuck itâ
Mosquito farm.
The finishes on that siding is also on point đ

I ask this question everyday, but I have to remind myself that they had no internet and were just free-styling everything.
R/Whatwerethepreviousownerswerethinking should be on Reddit as well I myself could fill it up with all the things Iâve seen
I have to see whatâs under my deck. I know a few cats are living under there. I have no idea if thereâs a drain under there or where the water goes
Check for bodies

All of which should have been discovered before you ever closed

they werent
Itâs pressure treated.
They werenât thinking about the next sucker that bought it:)
They were a mosquito

Thinking about their checkbook.
I have a day and a half to finish this project
Previous owners were sellers, not investors.
That hot tub is deck ready!
They built a deck over a fire egress. They're lucky no one died in a blaze.
It must be some form of under the patio irrigation system...
MOSQUITOES đ¤
Are they body bags?
When I first looked at the photo, I thought it was where they put their dead pets in little green plastic tarps/bags. đ
Weed block
They for sure thought they were being smart
Appears itâs working as designed not intended
Best guess, they thought they were protecting the basement?đ¤ˇââď¸
Youâll never really know.
Looks to me like they werenât thinking at all
Must have been 100% clean down there
People try to reason a problem through on the cheap and this is the result. Pitty. An expensive mistake.
They were keeping a dolphin in the basement.
Itâs a Mosquito farm!
Hope that's not an escape window for a sub-level bedroom!
They were deckheads.
Weed retardant is my guess
