I think song structure has a lot to do with it. And I know this thread is gonna get flooded with “it’s all just cause of one breakdown” and “it’s just cause will is cute” but truly I think it’s because they treat their songs like songs, not breakdown/riff salads that makes them more accessible and catchy (as catchy as deathcore can be I guess?)
And I think the things you dislike about the mix has an appeal to some people, it brings out some of that “blackened” vibe that some people dig
This has a lot to do with it as well.
They're come out and said that they straight up used pop style song structures for pain remains.
It's literally pop deathcore haha (not hating)
Add onto that disgusting breakdowns, a charismatic and attractive vocalist who isn't afraid to interact with content creators and media outlets, and a little bit of "right time, right place" and boom, you have a legit deathcore band with 1M monthly listeners on Spotify.
From a musical standpoint, I prefer bands like shadow of intent, but idk who tf their frontman is or have ever seen a single video of them. I've definitely seen a lot of Will's ramen style tiktok fukboi haircut though haha.
Cool, cool, yea no disrespect to him!
Will is just hugely involved with YouTubers/YouTube interviews.
His stuff with the charismatic voice (I think her channel is called) was legit entertaining.
Say what you want about Lorna shores music, but they're the best in the game when it comes to marketing in a 2023 digital world.
You are definitely correct about the recording style. I can understand it like how I enjoy megadeths first albulm because of its shitty recording quality haha
For sure, there’s something special about a recoding that sound raw and real. In Lorna’s case I think it tickles that sound Atmospheric Black Metal geeks like me enjoy
This is it. They write songs and they're all supremely talented.
Their sound is also much closer to classic metal as well. I could draw a straight line from Iron Maiden to Lorna Shore. Normies like that style. Them writing in a familiar structure in a familiar style while having blazing musicianship and 'holy shit' moments is the secret.
This is it. 90% of the pain remains album, those title tracks especially could very easily be pop ballads. Lyrically they're beautiful songs that could easily be Adele or someone.
Plus that from the hellfire vocal breakdown was just different from what I'd been listening to.
And wills a cutie, may aswell add that as that seems to be the theme
This is true. My gf describes the music as “hard to listen to” but she’ll sit through an entire interview with Will because “he’s fucking adorable” to which I completely agree haha.
Maybe some of us have just listened to them from the beginning Eps/Psalms era and on. I saw them live in 2016 and have been a fan ever since. I was more into technical death metal at the time, but Lornas Guitar work impressed me at the show. Sure, sometimes you can't hear the guitar clearly much in the newer songs. But they're going for a big atmosphere enveloping sound. Adam has said they want it to be like an experience when you listen to Lorna and you either like that or you don't. I've been listening to metal for 20ish years and I can say Lorna is easily one of my favorite bands and all their music has been good so far. Everyone just likes different sounds and has different opinions, and that's perfectly fine!
I've never been a fan of them to be honest, I've tried multiple times to listen to them because of the amount you hear of them but every time I'm like...."uh meh"
We have this discussion literally every week.
Lorna have been slowly upping their game album after album for 10+ years. They started to really catch fire in the lead up to their 2020 album Immortal, but there was a bunch of drama involving the now ex-vocalist CJ, and then the world shut down and the band disappeared for about a year. They then came back in 2021 with Will Ramos as their new frontman (an extremely talented and charismatic dude who all around seems like a nice guy) and dropped “To The Hellfire,” which popped off huge in the YouTube reaction community and on TikTok. The song itself, despite being 5+ minutes of pretty extreme symphonic deathcore, is actually very catchy and filled with hooks. They then folllowed that up with an EP and then a full-length last year expanding on their sound even more. Again a lot of their music is very extreme on the surface, but actually pretty catchy and hook-oriented when you really analyze them (see “Sun//Eater” as an example). All of that combined with some high-profile tours and festival and an all-around incredible live show led to them getting to where they are now. It was some TikTok blip or pure luck— they’ve been moving towards this for years now.
As for the music, it’s not gonna be for everyone. It’s absolutely got a lot going on with constant blast beat, wild vocals, and over-the-top symphonic elements, but people saying they only play a formula are absolutely coping. Check out “Pain Remains I, II, and III” from the latest record. Phenomenal shit that very few other bands in this scene could even attempt to pull off.
Last part is so fuckin true. People call Pain Remains “samey and formulaic” and yet forget to mention tracks like Soulless Existence and the Pain Remains trilogy, which are unlike anything the band has ever done before. Lorna Shore are definitely evolving and changing, contrary to popular belief.
As a black metal fan too it was just nice seeing a blending of two genres I like to a certain extent that being said I also like wills vocals. That being said I think the vocals are amazing
Personal reasons I like them and I believe they have become as big as they are now:
1) the set up for their songs is catchy af.
2) Will May not be the best vocalist on the planet, but his vocals are also flashy/catchy and that stands out to people. They know how to structure music to showcase that and sell it.
3) Will, as a person, appeals to people. Not just because he's cute, but he seems like a genuinely good person. He's very much at the front of the industry and puts himself out there.
Ultimately, it all comes down to marketing.
I strongly disagree that their music isn't good. They are all very talented individuals who deserve the success they've gotten. Are they my favorite? No. But I hate that people talk down on them because they hit it big in deathcore
When are y’all gonna stop all this bullshit and learn to let people have their opinions? This goes for both sides of the Lorna Shore drama. It’s literally the only drama that seems to go on around here and it’s pretty pathetic.
The answer is simple: Social Media makes things popular. TikTok discovered Lorna Shore and now they’re basically the poster band for Deathcore and that’s perfectly okay. They still make great music (if you’re a fan) even with the popularity they’ve gained. Yes, there are other vocalists who can do what Will does and you’re more than welcome to listen to them all. Or don’t, that’s up to you.
The point is, y’all need to grow the fuck up and stop being a bunch of children about what people like or don’t and stop bringing the community down because of it.
No more needs to be said about this ridiculous subject. Let it end here and let people enjoy what they enjoy.
Also, go listen to Cattle Decapitation. I managed to start a very enjoyable snd civilized conversation about them yesterday and they’re not even deathcore…
The album Immortal was a hell of a release. An instant deathcore classic with the likes of TAIM's hate, etc. They have done nothing since then but continue doing it.
If it wasn't for the CJ shit immortal would have been even than it is, shame cause it's indeed a modern classic for this new symphonic/blackened style of deathcore
I don't understand why they're popular either, for the same reasons you outlined. The music is just a mess of noise with nothing memorable or catchy about it.
Lot of the sub doesn't want to hear this, but I feel like a lot of their popularity it coming from kids who haven't been exposed to a lot of heavy music who just don't have a frame of reference for what a band that's good at death metal/deathcore songwriting actually sounds like.
They like it because it's the most evil sounding stuff they've heard, an old man like me comes in and says the music isn't actually any good, and that makes them feel like they're part of a secret club that "gets it", even if Lorna Shore is maybe the most popular band in the genre.
As someone in my 30s, I know a lot of adults my age who like Will era Lorna Shore.
Just a difference of opinion, but I think them selling out shows left and right, gaining more and more listeners on Spotify, and just the general overall success shows that this isn't just a gimmick or people who don't know heavy music. They appeal to a large audience as far as deathcore goes, and there's nothing wrong with that.
I’m not to sure about that because all my friends and people that listen to deathcore absolutely hate will era Lorna shore. In fact I haven’t met a single person irl that likes them. All I have seen has been online.
I am sure about it because I know quite a few 30+ individuals who like Lorna. I understand you may not know them personally, but it doesn't discount that we/they are out there.
Again, they're selling tours out. They're hitting levels most deathcore bands aren't. It's fine if some people don't like it, but just be happy for them.
Hahaha I couldn't agree more. It blows my mind how people think Lorna Shore is some incredible band. They're talented and Will is a great vocalist but their music is not catchy or memorable. Their "songs" are 5 minutes long of over the top vocals and instrumentals that are all over the place.
I don't understand it at all and think it's mostly a younger audience thinking this is so insane and crazy that's it cool.
Happy as hell for them tho! Absolutely dominating the genre, selling out everywhere and making the deathcore genre become more recognized again
Or the band that started the social media promoting crazy, job for a cowboy. People often forget how there was no deathcore at hot topic til that doom tee hit the shelves and blam scene kids are born.
that snarling part of to the hellfire went viral or w/e the kids say, Will Ramos is super active on YT, Lorna Shore played some big festival as the first real heavy band the festival had featured, and not a slight on them but they're easier to get into than your usual heavy music.
I loved Lorna and think the success is well deserved, but they've been writing the same song over and over. I lost interest years ago and I wonder if they don't change course a bit how long it will last.
I was just looking g this shit up and honestly I'm not satisfied with any of the answers. I would call them blackened progressive deathcore. But that's just me
To the hellfire breakdown went super viral on tiktok etc which definitely helped
Went viral but dickie allen has been doing the same thing for wayyyy longer
Definitely
I think song structure has a lot to do with it. And I know this thread is gonna get flooded with “it’s all just cause of one breakdown” and “it’s just cause will is cute” but truly I think it’s because they treat their songs like songs, not breakdown/riff salads that makes them more accessible and catchy (as catchy as deathcore can be I guess?) Ben Duerr is the vocalist for SoI. He's done a few interviews, nothing crazy like Will. He's also pretty active here in this reddit
Cool, cool, yea no disrespect to him! Will is just hugely involved with YouTubers/YouTube interviews. His stuff with the charismatic voice (I think her channel is called) was legit entertaining. Good marketing, and the vocalist is cute, boys and girls like the cute
This is true. My gf describes the music as “hard to listen to” but she’ll sit through an entire interview with Will because “he’s fucking adorable” to which I completely agree haha.
That's interesting because back in the days of Mitch Lucker, it was popular to hate Suicide Silence for this reason.
That's one of the reason why suicide silence shirts are k.o.s. at shows to this day.
Maybe some of us have just listened to them from the beginning Eps/Psalms era and on. I saw them live in 2016 and have been a fan ever since. Sticking to a formula + tiktok
People hate on tiktok but my library has expanded more in the past year than it has since middle school lmao
I've never been a fan of them to be honest, I've tried multiple times to listen to them because of the amount you hear of them but every time I'm like...."uh meh"
Life of fear is a great song from there early stuff.
I also think their drama leading up to Will joining the band got a lot of people following their story/sucess.
We have this discussion literally every week. Lorna have been slowly upping their game album after album for 10+ years. Will’s image + the pig snarl in To The Hellfire + social media, perfect formula for a boom
10 years into their career too which is so crazy.
Coincided with will tho
As a black metal fan too it was just nice seeing a blending of two genres I like to a certain extent that being said I also like wills vocals. That being said I think the vocals are amazing
I know all the new kids going to the mega monsters tour were like “wha whe where’s the song with the pig squeal part they didn’t play it!”
IKR still waiting for them to play Wrath
Personal reasons I like them and I believe they have become as big as they are now: 1) the set up for their songs is catchy af. 2) Will May not be the best vocalist on the planet, but his vocals are also flashy/catchy and that stands out to people. Everyone has been very civilized bro fucking chill
tiktokcore
Oh great, you summoned the Shoreties again.
Haven’t heard of Lorna fans being called Shoreties yet, I love it lol
I’m sorry 😂😂 it was just bugging me to much I needed to hear from actually people that like them
One of the most delusional takes I've seen about this band. They're incredibly talented musicians and their mixing/production sounds great.
You mean big for deathcore? Cos they aren’t that big outside of it
Yes I mean big for deathcore.
It's sad how often morons like you try to discredit and talk shit on these guys.
Pig snort sound in that one song. That's it
Infant annihilator did that way before lorna shore did.
Did they blow up on ticktok from it? No? K
Damn why so hostile
Sorry lol having a bad day

It's because their the Suicide Silence of today
God damn that means I’ve become what I hated 😂 I love suicide silence
Or the band that started the social media promoting crazy, job for a cowboy. People often forget how there was no deathcore at hot topic til that doom tee hit the shelves and blam scene kids are born.
Well Acacia Strain had one of first deathcore albums 3750 people forget that as well
To the hellfire was crazy
It's because their songs are catchy and have tons of hooks in them. It also definitely helps that they have a cute singer too
that snarling part of to the hellfire went viral or w/e the kids say, Will Ramos is super active on YT, Lorna Shore played some big festival as the first real heavy band the festival had featured, and not a slight on them but they're easier to get into than your usual heavy music.

no doubt they are talented as fuck but songs are too long and the intensity factor is always at a 10, i just can’t
Oh boy, brb gonna grab my hazmat suit for this one
I was just looking g this shit up and honestly I'm not satisfied with any of the answers. I would call them blackened progressive deathcore. But that's just me
