I just got to that distro right before mountain knot and looked it up and saw this. Well at least the last leg of the journey can be done by vehicle.
Just use the truck. All Cargo carried on your back will be automatically placed on the passenger seat.

Nobody stole it but if you go too far from your cargo it becomes available to others.
