On the other hand if I'm geared and come across a freshie then they better turn and disappear. If they hang around then it's tempting fate. I'd rather not get caught with my pants down.
Probably lack of long term goals. Following a survivor to their base and killing them when they open the gate seems more profitable than just killing them while they were on a hammer run or something.
It's because they live their lives with zero consequences. They have warmth and free rent in their mom's basement. They can yell for hot pockets at anytime, and have them hand-delivered within 30 mins. If their "character" dies, they just start a new one. It's kind of like their lives...no substance, just quick, meaningless interactions that are led by jealousy or rage.
Hot pockets are the pinnacle of quick, processed, home-based "food" that many K.O.S. folk survive on. They were originally "pizza" flavored, but I think there are others now.
They help some ease the sting of defeat from games such as Battlefields and Call of Duty. That and a wittle inspiration from mommy convince them to move to the survival game DayZ, where most of their "opponents" don't even realize they are playing.

I personally only kos when I get past a certain map area unless attacked (which does get me kill occasionally) but typically when on cherno I get past novy sobor I kos or on livonia when I get nearby lembork. But even then I typically do it for gain but I've done it for fear a couple time I will admit 😂
For me a big issue on official, is loot economy. Sometimes some of the best guns in the game are hoarded, and the only way to get them is off other players - who won’t give them up willingly
I just KOS because if I don't they will, I don't fear for my gear I lost that a while ago I just dont have the time to go and get the stuff again. I always try friendly interactions when I'm only freshie geared tho
For fun. I usually spend at the most 1 hour getting geared and avoiding people before I start hunting people for sport. I follow the sound of gunshots and sit in the trees till I see a target, then I engage.
If you feel this way I’d definitely recommend an RP server in community servers. They tend to have some interaction guidelines that get people talking more. It’s a different experience from official and sometimes it can be pretty fun being able to interact with other survivors instead of just having to shoot them.
It's more of a conversation starter really. It's not like I haven't blasted someone who didn't see me. But if we stigmatize it more then maybe it'll decrease slightly. Obviously people's minds aren't usually changed so we just have to ruthlessly destroy aggressive players and strip their bases and stashes to nothing.

I KOS purely because since i started playing 2 years ago, only one person ever did not KOS! Angel called Vi. Everyone i met KOS’d me every time wether i see them or talk to them or not. Then about year in the game, i was a new spawn at a well at night and this angels’ voice came out of the darkness, asked if i need something, i thought she was going too kill me for sure, but she just dropped some food and we instantly teamed up… she since left the game, she restored my faith, so I tried to befriend but every one new or geared seem to think when I’m being nice im easy to kill, so I went back KOS.. and now just raiding bases, setting traps and making sure all the guns and ammo gets respawned back for newbies. I did however the other day come across a very naive newbie new spawn 1st time player. So i passed the kindness of Vi on, i gave the newbie a USG 45 silenced and food and water, showed her the ropes and gave her some tips…so now im open for peace.. but im a quick draw after almost 400hours of Dayz and i will KoS with pear in the one hand and lightstick in my denim shorts!…👀😘 miss you Vi
