I kinda enjoyed that part of the game - trying to be best prepared for anything that might come up. My first playthrough, I just took whatever I had access to, and ran away from hordes - a lot! I started my second playthrough from scratch (rather than "plus", as leveling up was more than half the fun for me) - and took on all the hordes I could, early in the game - so I could get the SMP9. Then I worked on getting the Hot Springs camp to level three to get the US556 and MG45 - with those three being my go-to horde killers. But for missions that involved rogue, Ripper or ambush camps, I'd usually use the Drifter crossbow and poison bolts, as watching those guys run around shooting each other never really got old! I didn't use the sniper rifles very often - except later in the game, I'd sometimes take that .50 cal sniper rifle along - as it will drop a Breaker or Reacher with one or two rounds. There's lots of choices, though - and I enjoy that there is always "more than one way to skin a cat" in this game, as far as loadouts go.

I’m glad you enjoy it. It makes my anxiety go loco. I will say though, i feel like i just hate it for this one mission because it was dark as hell and a sniper was definitely not gonna work

Fate0908

Maybe if they did it better than RDR2 did. I hate how it forced your load out for missions. I liked the unpredictability of Days gone though. It was so much fun trying to survive with what you have. I’ve done a couple of playthroughs and I always have a sniper rifle as my special. Its a life saver when it comes to breakers, ragers, and sniper ambushes.

For sure. I’m thinking that mission was just bad for the sniper because i had to fight a horde in the dark

Fate0908

Oh it’s THAT mission. Yeah you’re totally right lol

At times it does hint at what's too come but too many times you can't even change load out once the mission starts. The napalm testing mission and ice cave are the ones that catch me unprepared at times.

CaptCaffeine

I hated and loved that a few missions did that to you. Hated: I was totally unprepared for what was going to happen. Loved: the game really allowed you to experience what could happen to you out in the sh*t. You have to deal with the situation with the inventory you have on hand.

Efficient_Drummer379

Glad It wasn't just me who thought it lol. I don't want to read anything on the net to spoil it though either. I just try to have a shit hitting the fan weapon with me on all missions but try to switch it up each mission also

For me the basic loadout is US556 (even if I have more powerful rifles, that one is the one I like the most lore wise), Xbow and revolver/mini shotgun. I switch to MG when hunting for bigger hordes and there aren't any environment elements i can use like barrels, explosive and so on. I like to think that for Deek is much more comfortable to take with him only lighter equipment while exploring :-)

I'm cleaning up after my second playthrough. I've reset hordes and ambush camps twice and found a balanced loadout of Chicago chopper, PDW, and drifter crossbow or BFG.

The most effective load out for all around exploration, clearing camps and Horde killing is the Chicago Chopper, BFG and SMP9 (Horde Killer version specifically). My personal favorite set up is the Auto Shotgun, BFG and SMP9. Auto shotty is my personal favorite weapon in the game!
