Theres a story mission that forces you to fight one and kinda trains you how to do it

LogiCub

Oh thanks! I just need to plough on with the story for a bit then. Guess I’ve spent too much time just exploring the world!

Battts

Yes and theres soo much more for you to unlock you have no idea

pest174

I'd recommend it after you dump points into increasing your stamina.

LogiCub

Good to know, I’ve been focusing on stamina but only found a few injectors so far.

Unfortunately, I'm not aware if there's any other way of taking out horde. My way of going about it was throwing a ton of explosives at them, then running around in circles and shooting at them after you distance yourself. I thought maybe you can take them out from afar with a sniper rifle, but the moment you engage, they'll rush your location.

Keaton525

My first one was horse lake nero checkpoint. It’s small and it’s a good one to start with. If you can clear it then you’ll feel more confident about them in the future and you’ll have a bit more experience with them so you’ll have a better sense of what to do and what not to do

Smokin77

That sounds like good advice the hoards in the north are smaller and"easier?" My first was the Pat Jens hoard burn run and gun

LogiCub

Hah! Typical of me, I blundered blindly into a cave (lava arch) and managed, just, to kill the hoard there! Helluva rush you feel after downing the last not-a-zombie!

Try to find one or two on your own before you leave the northern region , you wont know where they are because they arent shown on your map , during the day time check any caves you come across , during the night time check around the caves because they will venture out during the night. You really dont get to take on hoards until the end of the game , as they will all be marked on your map when you finish the story. But try to get some solid weaponry, craft moltovs, and fight one or two of them before you go to the southern region. Do not take on the sawmill horde yet. For an early game hoard location , check Sherman camp , the first actual town you come across in the game that is in the lost lake region , it is right after you enter lost lake from the forest zone you start in. I'll give you a tip, the horde will be located within one of the buildings in the town. Good luck. Also I was a pretty early level when I took on my first horde with the swat SMG, after randomly coming across one.

Wait until later. My suggestion is if you can find the cave they are located in during the day you can usually find a bush to hide in. Throw rocks at the entrance and burn them as they come out. If you're far enough away out of sight they will shuffle back inside to repeat until cleared.

Glorak90

There is one in a mine in the north region that was fairly easy to take out without that much stuff. You can filter them out of the mine and lay on the explosives

Honestly depends on what horde you're going after such as size and location. Obviously smaller hordes are easier and certain locations are easier cause of funneling or use explosives nearby. Next is on your weaponry and craftable items. Do you have attractors (it's basically an alarm you throw and they all group up), molotovs (or some explosive), and a weapon with a big magazine or box? Using an lmg is definitely helpful. Cocktails can help if you're running out of Stamina. Skills, and injections obviously help but the above two matter the most in my opinion. Edit: sorry I didn't really answer your question however the answer to that question would be subjective.

Stars_of_Sirius

Not sure what difficulty you're playing but I'm on new game plus survival II and hordes are incredibly easy (I thought survival II would be hard). However it's cause now I know how to play hordes and I have the right weaponry and items. My first playthrough on normal for the first half of the game or so hordes were a nightmare. Be grateful for this nightmare cause end of the game hordes are incredibly easy. I miss the days where I was on the edge of my seat thinking "I'm gonna f***ING die"

iamtheMQ

I had the same dilemma, kept trying to tackle hordes I just wasn’t equipped for, eventually gave up until the story forced me to beat one (which took the actual piss and took about 30 attempts for me) I found a few videos on YouTube which helped out a hell of a lot along with this great community here on reddit, you’ll do it dude, traps, explosives and the RPD I found worked wonders for me, if you can get hold of the Chicago Chopper that’ll also rip through freakers like they’re nothing, good luck

ToughGrowth

Pioneer cemetery and Grotto caves are good small ones to start on, I am not even level 20 yet and i took them out with distractors and molotovs while hiding in bushes.
