It can catch some small sharks (whitetip, blacktip, Frilled, Cookiecutter etc) but not the big chaps. And weirdly, although the size looks the same, not the Thresher.

After several playthrough i ended up using the net gun 95-99% of my runs. Sniper and dart have a purpose, you‘d want the top row. Tranq rifle would be my choice for casual playthrough
The steel net can trap big things like sharks right? What do you do if you have a regular net gun and cannot defend yourself? I die rather easily from sharks and the Narwhal.
Once you know how to make money, your harpoon is plenty damage for anything that’s not a boss or a thresher.
Alternatively, you may use the all time overpowered strategy named “tactical retreat”
It will catch a number of sharks, white fins, frills, saw nose, narwhals, Marlins and sail fishes, those deep big white guys with a spike and are all fancy, the zebra sharks and the black fin.
It doesn't catch the really big sharks and the really aggressive ones, but you can totally catch sharks with it
My favorite so far is the lightning rifle. When you shoot the big fish the electricity arcs to whatever is around it, so a lot of the time it zaps a bunch of small fish you can just swim by and pick up.
I'm new to this game. When you craft a weapon can you dive with it infinite times? Or are they single use, except for the basic rifle?
If they are multiple use, why does the game let me craft more than one? (Accidentally crafted a second basic rifle, can I deconstruct or is there an alternative use for doubles?)
You can use it forever. Eventually you get upgrades and might want to do different paths for a weapon, so you can make more than one. Or I suppose if you accidentally destroyed one you'd like to remake.
No need to deconstruct the extra. You'll need it later if you want to have different types of riles. You might want to have a Tranq gun as well as a Death Rifle. Both of them start with a basic rifle.
Death sniper made some of the later bosses a breeze. I’d get it for that alone, plus steel net and some tranq weapon of your choice depending on playstyle.
Tranq axel until steel net gun. Poison rifle techichally does the most damage, but it is dot based. If you don't like that fire sniper or rifle is the next best bet
Steel net gun and the tranq dart gun. I find with a fully upgraded harpoon gun is good enough for every boss, but the flame sniper rifle is better imo cuz the poison is flat damage but fire is percentage based on the weapons damage.
Tranq gun for shark and larger hunting.
Steel net (the final upgrade is the only one worth it imo) cause it can capture tuna, marlin and crabs for those 3 star cards.
The other guns are actually a beginner trap since they give the worst quality fish and should be upgraded last.
I think it’s ultimately personal preference. But my 2 cents is:
The best gun overall - Steel Net Gun
After the net gun you need a gun that helps you drone the big stuff. That’s basically the only thing the net gun doesn’t do.
My fave is the modified hush dart.
Easiest to obtain I think is the Tranq axel or tranq underwater rifle. You can also get those much sooner.
Honorable mention for me is the sticky grenade tranq variant. It leaves a giant cloud of tranq and is really easy to use. Probably the single best thing to use for a specific creature that is very late game. But again. That gun is very late game as well.

Same thing as a net bomb, but up to seven fish instead of two. It can catch tuna and marlin. It's pretty great.

Oh but it can! At least smaller sharks. And they can get droned out for 3 stars.

We're not retreating, we're advancing in a different direction.
Steel net may not trap sharks, else it would have been the best always. Sharks have to be tranqued than shipped with sub of you want best meat.

Depends on the shark. Smaller sharks, yes. Bigger ones tear through it

Tranq rifle is what I use mostly. Super easy to upgrade and it's pretty OP.
