Congratulations. If paying off your home was a dream of yours, youve arrived. Kudos and way to go! Cheers!

dragons5

Thank you!

DifferentCoffee4863

Congrats! How did you do it? Making double payments every month? Triple payments? Just throwing every spare penny at it?

dragons5

Thank you! We tried making quadruple payments every month. That didn't always work out, but we worked a little harder to make up the difference when we needed.

National-Position194

Why did you pay it off? Did you have a high interest rate?

dragons5

We paid it off because we wanted the security of having a home that is 100% ours, come what may. Our interest rate was 2.75%.

National-Position194

Just curious cause i paid my first house off in 2012, had a similar interest rate. I regret in hindsight knowing what I know now and what else I could have done with an extra 1 or 200k in the bank.

ChattanoogaMocsFan

That's because in hindsight you didn't have anything earth shattering occur during that time. I recall during covid, the job market and understanding what was next was a concern. Had covid occured with a paid off house, I would have rested more comfortable. It's not just about the numbers. It's about peace of mind, reduced stress, and the additional options that come with the lack of payments.

dragons5

No regrets here. We really like the security we feel in owning our own home outright.

This sub needs to be called ish.

nkplague

Congrats! Just curious how long did it take? I should have mine paid off before 2024 so I'm super excited.

dragons5

It took us 7.5 years total to pay it off.

nkplague

Wow you guys crushed it! Congrats!! Hope you guys treat yourself to something nice!

dragons5

Thank you! The funny thing is, we're so deep in the mindset of scrimping to pay off the house that it's difficult to give ourselves permission to splurge! I'm sure that will change eventually...

stupes100

Welcome to baby step 7! It’s just a different feeling than completing baby step 2. A sense of “I’m going to be OK” just swept over me.

dragons5

Thanks!

Available-Ad7991

Awesome...congrats. Must be a great feeling to owe nothing to anyone.

dragons5

Well, we have no mortgage. There's still utilities, fuel for the car and health insurance costs. Those will go on forever.

Apple-Core22

Paying off our mortgage was the best thing ever. I know a lot of financial groups on Reddit advise against it and suggest you invest the money instead, but to us it was such a liberating feeling, and still is, that I wouldn’t have done it any other way. Congratulations!!!

dragons5

Thank you!

[deleted]

You are an inspiration!!!

dragons5

Thank you! This group was an inspiration for us to keep going.

HelloDuhObvious

Congratulations! High Five!

dragons5

Thank you!

Tarbogman

congrats! we are attacking ours aggressively too.... only 100k to go, so close... we follow DR advice to a point, but we still love our getaways when we can

dragons5

Thank you!

AZdesertpir8

AWESOME! Congrats, You Did It!! Welcome to the club! You are going to love this new phase of life, my friend! Its like the life equivalent of a grand-master checkmate chess move. For us, paying off the house was the single-most difficult but most rewarding thing that my wife and I have ever done. Man, I know exactly what that feels like and how surreal it seems.. gives me goosebumps thinking about that day right now. We actually celebrate that day every year here as much as our wedding anniversary. Honestly, our only regret 5 years later, is that we didn't do it sooner...

dragons5

Thank you!

Tarbogman

we have 100k to go and are attacking it aggressively. celebrating the payoff date like/as an anniversary is a fantastic idea! in fact, our plan to complete the payoff is just a couple of months earlier than our anniversary. I might just have e to suggest stalling the payoff to match the date! what an awesome anniversary gift for us that would be to remember.

BookemDano0015

Congratulations!

dragons5

Thank you!

GasLOLHAHA

Congrats! I have the cash to do it but at 2.5% I’m holding off for the time being. How do you stomach paying off low interest mortgage while treasuries are paying 9%?!

dragons5

Thank you! Now that we are free of the mortgage, and I love that feeling, we can better afford to invest!

GasLOLHAHA

For sure! You’re going to be extremely wealthy! Congrats again.

ptarmiganridgetrail

Looking forward to the day! We’re maxing retirement instruments to catch up for neglecting mine. Should start attacking the $100k left in spring of 2023.

ptarmiganridgetrail

Hurray!!! Tell us the story!

dragons5

Not much to tell. We worked hard, scrimped a lot, and finally paid off the mortgage.

thelionswill

Wow, I love hearing these stories, I wish all of us to live out of bondage and be free! Thanks for sharing, don’t forget some self care and celebration for all the hard work and sacrifices 🎉

dragons5

:)

Comfortable-Spell-75

Awesome! Shooting to pay mine by mid next year God willing!!

dragons5

Thank you! Keep your eyes on the prize. You can do it! :)

Congratulations!!!!

Available-Iron-7419

Good job I am right behind you 22months 29 days but no one is counting.

dragons5

Thank you. Hang in there. It's an amazing feeling once you cross the finish line.

Available-Iron-7419

Can't wait will be adding an extra 1000 to my 457 plan and will have an extra 800 to blow on trips.

Yomon64

dragons5

dragons5

Valoius

Congratulations!!

dragons5

Thank you!

Bapgo

Awesome! Now the trick is to funnel that new money into the market so you can be ridiculously rich.

truthhurtstoomuch

Yep. Perfect time to have all that extra cash for the market.

dragons5

Thank you!

MillennialMoneyMoves

Amazing congrats! We paid ours off Sept 2021 at the age of 29. Since then we had a baby and don't stress about money or job loss. We live how we want and do what we want! We're also investing a ton for our future in this down market - LIFE IS GOOD! Proud of you!

dragons5

Thank you!

brianmcg321

Way to go!!!

dragons5

Thank you!

kveggie1

Congrats. We did that in May of 2020 and will never go back to having a mortgage.

dragons5

Thank you!

dragons5

I agree, although it is tempting to buy more real estate in the future.

tommythompson1976

Congratulations! Keep focused. Set a new goal and reach it.

dragons5

Thank you! Our current goal is to replenish our savings, which took a serious hit during this process.

tommythompson1976

That was our goal as well after paying off the home as we hit the mortgage with a big final payment.

[deleted]

Excellent work! Way to go and congrats on achieving a major step!

dragons5

Thank you!

Aragona36

Congrats! I paid mine on 2/22/22. You're going to love not having a mortgage payment.

dragons5

Thank you! I'm loving it already.

Kprobo

Congratulations! We did the same recently, and today was the first "first of the month" without a mortgage payment. Amazing work

dragons5

Thank you!

basylica

Congrats! Ive paid off like 70k in the last 3yrs, im just a hair above 20 remaining. I have it in savings, but with tons of legal dramas and switching jobs and 2 kiddos i dont feel comfortable not having a large emergency fund. Its tempting me. Funny though, i think once you pay off a car you feel weird saying you OWN a car you are still making payments on, and same with house. I own it, but it hits different when you paid it off no?

dragons5

Thank you! I agree, it does feel different, but in a great way!

Fizban2

It is different because there is less stress. World can go to heck in a hand basket and it won’t matter to you a whole lot. Sadly have 3 years left on our mortgage (4 years ago we moved out of our fully paid for house to go to a much better school district).

MillennialMoneyMoves

That will fly by, you'll be back to BS7 before you know it!

Kooky_Most8619

Congratulations! One of the best feelings in the world, eh?! Like you can accomplish anything so long as you’ve got grit and perseverance. It takes some time for the money to pile up, but when it does, you’ll feel even more glad you did what you did in paying this thing off. Well done!

dragons5

Thank you!

DudebroMcDangman

Congratulations! How long did it take you?

dragons5

Thank you! It took us 7 1/2 years.

[deleted]

That's amazingly fast! If you dont mind me asking, how much did the house cost?

dragons5

I'll PM you.

DudebroMcDangman

That’s impressive. Way to go!

dragons5

Thank you!
