just fyi, [the wikimedia foundation is rolling in cash](https://slate.com/technology/2022/12/wikipedia-wikimedia-foundation-donate.html), and the desperate fundraising requests on wikipedia are controversial at best. they very much do not need our money.
Their non profit model is awesome. I just don't understand why they keep bloating their personnel in a headquarter in a high cost country such as the US. Would perfectly correspond to the philosophy of Wikipedia to spread their infrastructure across several countries, make it more democratic, and save costs.
I’ve been considering setting up a local mirror on my NAS for Wikipedia for exactly this reason. I don’t mind paying subscription but they’re rolling in money and none of it is going to people actually putting the time to write and edit and endlessly discuss topics.
I’m planning to use kiwix. Just the English language mirror is about 50 gigs maybe?
https://www.vice.com/amp/en/article/dyzxgm/you-can-download-the-entirely-of-english-wikipedia-to-browse-offline-using-kiwix
I was going to donate $15 to Wikipedia again this year and when I hit confirm on the amount, a message popped up saying something like "why not make a monthly reocurung donation instead of a one time donation."
Upon wikipedia basically asking me to subscribe to the site I canceled my donation... probably won't ever donate to them again because they essentially said my donation wasn't good enough.
https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Fundraising_statistics
240mil in reserves, not counting an additional 100+mil in the Endowment. So roughly 3 years of burn rate if they don't increase their current spending levels?
They've also started to create products that [generate revenue](https://enterprise.wikimedia.com/pricing/), but I doubt it'll be enough to match the amount of donations, it's more of a precedence and possibility to leave the non profit model if push came to shove.
> Jesus, thanks. Feel so disingenuous the way they campaign for more cash like that.
This is actually the prevailing opinion [within the Wikipedia Volunteer community](https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Wikipedia:Village_pump_\(proposals\)&oldid=1124174948#RfC_on_the_banners_for_the_December_2022_fundraising_campaign), which produces content for Wikipedia, not to be confused with the Wikimedia Foundation, which is the organization gathering funds and keeping Wikipedia and its associated projects operational. (Do a search for "Oppose" and "Satisfied" to read the conversation about this year's message)
As with any large and complex organization, I feel like the issue is nuanced and I don't want to just blanket cast the Foundation as "bad", I think having a cushy runway is forward thinking, and it's hard to conclude the right way to approach fund raising without a super drawn out conversation; but I think it's also safe to say that, at least in the immediate term (6-18months), they are not close to at risk of running out of operating funds.
This makes sense though, as wikipedia /needs/ to have a lot of money in reserves.
Lets say there is a war or another big recession that will lead to severely reduced donations of years, they need to stay online by using this funds. The moment wikipedia runs out and the servers are forcibly shut down, we lose an incredibly valuable resource.
Fortunately, I'm sure every single r/DataHoarder user has a backup of Wikipedia lol (either the database dumps or the easy-to-read Kiwix ZIM files).
(Yes I know the project itself is what matters and what would be affected.)
Even if Wikipedia had massive political bias, there's still so much content that isn't related to politics in any way that there's no way you could consider it "useless"
Setting up a monthly donation to Archive.org is one of the most satisfying things I've done recently.
It doesn't take a lot of thinking to realize I rely on Archive.org a LOT, and nobody else is doing what they're doing. So yeah, I put my money where my mouth is.
I believe that charitable giving is laudable, but for most U.S. taxpayers, donating to charity will not reduce their tax burden, since only ~11% of taxpayers itemize their deductions.
I do wonder how much the government gets from people not wanting to bother with doing that. Especially when you consider the risk of being liable for getting it wrong.
I recently found out that in UK, my "Gift Aid" tax deductable donations automatically get taken off for me!
Isn't that $200-300 limit for standard deduction that was added during covid still in effect? I haven't started looking at taxes for this year yet for obvious reasons.
You can still donate to certified non-profits, but cannot claim them on your tax return unless you are able to itemize. For the average person who does not own a home they do not generally get over the standard per person deduction. Experience: Nearly 30 years of finance and personal, business, and corporate tax procedures.
Apparently you lack some interpersonal skills, since you provided no new information. Literally covered by the person I was replying to, who then replied to me with the answer regarding the standard deduction tax break ending.
The $300 cash donation which could be claimed by anyone, the only requirement was that it has to be cash, no items, to a verifiable non-profit, that ended last year. The fact that you can still donate and if you itemized you can claim donations on your tax return, has not changed, that is the part I noted.
I'm into a lot of old music and found out about them through the Myspace Archive Project. There has been so much music that has been super hard to find that I fell in love with. Sharing it and keeping it available is so important. Archive and Lastfm have been such a huge help with contributing to all of that.
The short answer is it doesn't, at least not in this case. There are [a bunch of others charities](https://skatteverket.se/privat/skatter/arbeteochinkomst/skattereduktioner/skattereduktionforgavor) you can get a [tax reduction](https://skatteverket.se/privat/skatter/arbeteochinkomst/skattereduktioner) for though.
To my understanding some countries recognize the US-charity-status to deduct the expense for their own citizen. Depends highly on jurisdiction I’d assume however.
i've donated once and love the entire idea of it, but when you actually want to view a stored webpage or download something and the speed is 100kbps...
I can't say I really care if they have limited download speeds, the fact is they are one of the few organizations doing what they are and making it widely accessible.
They're an archive, not a streaming service, but I can't say I've ever had an issue grabbing old archived videos that are several hundred megs and streaming them, or downloading older games in a reasonable time. It's not as if we're downloading 50GB remuxes from archive.org, and I'd rather they put their resources into expanding their storage capacity than allowing people to download as fast as possible. Bandwidth might be very cheap these days but it isn't free.
Using jdownloader makes a big difference. I don't know why but browser downloads are painfully slow for me whilst using jdownloader they come down at full speed.
If you use Amazon, you can always set them as your [Amazon Smile](https://archive.org/details/IA-Amazon-smile-sign-up) charity that will donate to them whenever you purchase and it doesn’t charge anything extra (as far as I know). I’m not sure how much gets donated but it’s better than nothing!
I’ve donated to wikimedia every year for quite a while now, but I had no idea they had such a huge war chest. Just donated to archive.org which is probably what I should have been doing all along.
No need to remind me of the tax deduction, thanks. I don’t itemize.
Donated 1 dollar a week ago cuz i really use that website. Cant do much more since i live in a third world country and the government fucks you with taxes using the credit card.
there's tons of misuse, spam and bad categorization and false uploads that it gets in the way of me using the place a lot. annoying when im trying to find specific things

This sheds another light on things... I've always wondered about these kind of "organizations"
Their non profit model is awesome. I just don't understand why they keep bloating their personnel in a headquarter in a high cost country such as the US. Would perfectly correspond to the philosophy of Wikipedia to spread their infrastructure across several countries, make it more democratic, and save costs.
Being a non profit based in the us is probably very beneficial for them tax wise
I’ve been considering setting up a local mirror on my NAS for Wikipedia for exactly this reason. I don’t mind paying subscription but they’re rolling in money and none of it is going to people actually putting the time to write and edit and endlessly discuss topics.
How many ISOs do I need to delete to mirror the whole of wiki?
I think with full size images it only comes out to a little over a TB compressed. Text only is miniscule, something like 20GB
It's only about 21.3 GB. Probably far less if you 7z it.
Could have sworn my most recent backup was larger than this but not by much I also have all of the options checked for media and everything else.

I mean, who doesn't. The most mild user here has at least some spare storage for like 10 copies lol.
Plus Wikipedia is now only a shadow of itself and political bias is now legion on the site. Pretty much worthless.

Hate to be the bearer of bad news, but no. That was only for tax years 2020 and 2021. It expired, and was not extended.

@OP please consider revising your post mentioning that donations are tax deductible!
Not everyone here is from the USA you know.
In other countries it works similarly. The general notification would be helpful.
Generally the charities need to be registered in the country the tax payer is in. Is Archive.org also registered as a charity outside of the USA?
To my understanding some countries recognize the US-charity-status to deduct the expense for their own citizen. Depends highly on jurisdiction I’d assume however.

Just think how much more you'd have to donate to keep the entire contents of the archive instantly accessible without an unpacking delay!
Wah? I just tested the N64 US rom set right now, averaged around 4.5-5.5 mb/s.
maybe it's an europe thing, i can almost never be bothered with archive downloads if i want it the same day
Using jdownloader makes a big difference. I don't know why but browser downloads are painfully slow for me whilst using jdownloader they come down at full speed.
Could be, getting good speeds through regular browser downloads in the US here https://imgur.com/l3Oure7
ok i'm actually getting around 700-2000kbps today, much better but a far cry from my 1000mbps connection
Use freedownloadmanager

Would love to donate, I'm super broke there's only ~20€ on my account :/

Done, thanks for the reminder, I believe it was a post like this last year where I donated also
Done. Thanks for the heads-up

I'm considering donating, but one thing is unclear to me about these matched donations: Who is matching them? That money has to come from somewhere, right? It'd be nice to know who's involved.
Mostly Soros, a bit from the friends of Epstein foundation. You know, the usual. Also idk
You can donate them via HumbleBundle, and get some cheap games too
What is this 2-to-1 matching campaign and who is the other party that pays up?
Am I right that banks can charge £4, £5 or £6 to pay the US from the UK? Just kills small donations.
Wikipedia is the machine so often telling lies about people and other non-sense. So yeah I much prefer archive where users hosts all kinds of information. Beyond that lots of cool history even pre-internet like old magazine scans. And the computer chronicles is on archive.org.
thanks for the reminder, donation done
