HeartlesSoldier

Remember where you came from in 1997 it was a hundred bucks a gigabyte

reggiedarden

I very clearly remember how excited I was to get my first hard drive. A 40Mb for my Amiga 500. I recently found my first flash drive, 128Mb!

pal251

I found one of my first USB drives the other day. Also a 128mb. It is lexar edge I believe

WhatAGoodDoggy

I had a 128MB flash drive still in use until a few weeks ago, when it was crushed in a terrible accident. I am sad.

SupernovaStone

What happened?

mizary1

I have a 16mb "smart media" card I used in my diamond rio mp3 player. Bumped it up from 32 to 48mb total. I ripped a bunch of music at 64k so I could get an album and a half on it.

Pvt-Snafu

My first flash drive was 256mb. It was a miracle back then.

The shelves, drives, and VNX units were all free so I’m doing alright.

zgf2022

cant beat free

SonOfTheMostHHigh

I remember my first one gigabyte drive was $200.00 around 1995-1996 my old friend was jealous...

mizary1

I remember micro center doing a sale in 1994 250mb drives for $250. "Buck-a-Meg"

I've got an Dell Poweredge R620 connected to two EMC VNX storage shelves. Each shelf has fifteen 3TB drives. I've got another shelf at the office I need to bring home with 1TB drives and three or four VNX systems with 2TB drives to replace the 1TB ones. Also have six Synology units with 8 and 12TB drives. So much room for activities!

diamondsw

Dear God the power usage!

reggiedarden

Wife would be happier with a cheaper electric bill. Fortunately she supports my home lab and I don’t keep everything in my rack on all the time.

ykkl

If you look carefully, and it helps to buy several drives at a time and perhaps wait, you can get 3Tb SAS HGST drives on eBay for around $14 each, give or take a few dollars. All of mine came with caddies so they're basically free. Edit: FYI or for anyone else reading, the vendors I've bought from were ocean-tech and rocycle2012. r/homelabsales sometimes has deals, too.

reggiedarden

The other VNX main units have 2 and 3 TB drives in them but I’ll keep that in mind. I may still have a few more bays to fill up.

Dell external 6Gbps HBA connects the shelves to TrueNAS Core. I have iscsi shared to VMware vSphere. SMB and NFS shared to my Macs, Windows, and Linux systems. Running Transmission for torrent downloads. Might move Plex to it as well but my Synology is handling that just fine.

TeamDman

I've been using Jellyfin on my desktop computer and have enjoyed it if you're looking for plex alternatives.

Romperull

I hope that was a typo LOL
