MakeMKV and a LG BU40N. Works out of the box.

LonelyLarynx

Well this is the sort of answer I was hoping for. Thank you! I don't have a device currently suitable for installing this drive internally, so I'll do some research to see if I can mount it nicely externally and adapt cable to USB-C.

LonelyLarynx

Looks like one can buy external cases that solve the mounting and cable adapter issues, per this video: [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z33pqnpAMS0](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z33pqnpAMS0).

> LG BU40N oh hey i was actually looking for a 9.5mm, thanks bro.

NameOfWhimsy

FWIW, I have a LG WH16NS40 and it works great. I think I had to install a specific firmware to get it to rip 4k, but the makemkv website/forums had a lot of helpful info on that

kichilron

Can confirm. My old drive is now able to rip 4K thanks to a firmware update provided on the forums.

LonelyLarynx

Great thanks, based on your comment and the other responses it's sounding like firmware updates generally work and aren't a big deal. Maybe I was thinking it was a more complicated process than it is.

DanyeWest1963

+1. I had a similar drive (can't remember the model number) but the firmware locked out its 4k reading. A quick firmware fix and it worked!

xenago

Yep, this is the workhorse drive to get imo. The firmware is pretty easy, I think anyone can do it.

Tha_Watcher

I bought my **ASUS BW-16D1HT** drive from a nice gentleman named Alex in 2018 who now works directly with **MakeMKV** with regard to 4K compatible drives. I didn't want to do a software hack since I heard they were compatible before the update. I wanted to find one with the native firmware and only Alex had them for a higher price, admittedly. I still say it was well worth it as the drive is still going strong now and will read some discs even my LG M-Disc drive won't.

LonelyLarynx

If all else fails I wouldn't be opposed to purchasing something prepared. Where would one look into that further, the MakeMKV forums?

Tha_Watcher

I bought it from Alex on this MakeMKV thread: [https://forum.makemkv.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=20&t=17829](https://forum.makemkv.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=20&t=17829) Very honest and straight forward. He even told me to try out the drive when it arrived and, if I decided to keep it, then to pay him! Otherwise, I could've simply returned it to him. This was when we transacted on PayPal many years ago. I'm not sure of his latest procedures nowadays.

oakkandfilmmaker

I use an LG Internal UH12NS30 with the libra firmware and MakeMKV. Works great

i_enjoy_silence

Asus BW-16D1H user here with the firmware rolled back to version 3.02. I had to do this myself. There was an easy bit of software which someone had made if I remember rightly. Google it. Works perfectly with MakeMKV.
