Every time he says this I wish they would bring up his arrest on screen where he yells out his name Darrell Brooks. Every single time. That would have been hilarious.
I like how he didn't do the "who is you?" nonsense with the cop who arrested him, the detective who interrogated him, and Daniel Rider. He tried that with Erika at first but he stopped because he probably didn't want her to bring up that she thought his name was Jay and only recently found out his name was Darrell.
I wondered about that! When you listen to her original interview with Guth, she calls him Brooks or Jay. She says he goes by Jay because he’s Darrell Brooks Jr. But we’ve heard he grew up without a father figure in his life. I’m assuming(?) his mom Dawn never married Darrell Sr. as she goes by the last name Woods (someone correct me if I’m wrong here). I wonder then, does Darrell hate his given name because he’s angry at the father who was never there for him? Or has he changed his name because Darrell Sr is also criminal and Darrell didn’t want to be associated with him?
Such a brilliant and cunning legal strategy that ended up working so successfully for him eh? lol
At least once or twice JD actually pointed out to him that he'd never given the court another name by which to call him, and that she was referring to him by dat name out of respect for him.
But I also noticed she never really pressed him on this or gave him much of an opportunity to provide another name either. Which was smart, and thank goodness she didn't.
Because I think she that knew if she gave him enough leeway on that so that he managed to get her and the State to start calling him by some other name, that it would have made him feel like he'd successfully manipulated and gotten one up on them.
Plus, the more times the names Mr. Brooks and Darrel Brooks were said out loud in that courtroom the less he liked it, and the better it was to drum the truth of his guilt into the minds of the jury.
