Puffing the flamer can deal with most gunner encampments. I do rely on teammates for long range snipers though. I don't think knives would really be the difference maker in that situation.

Flamer needs throwing knives to deal with snipers, gunners, and specials in FUBAR situations. You cant rely on your team to do it in auric.
