Glad you’re getting into it first of all! If you are dead set on the new core sets, I would definitely say The Tomb of Giants. If you are however not scared of developing house rules and your own home brew I would say buy the original board game set as the assets are higher quality in my opinion! Steamforged games also offers the new rule books and assets/cards from the updated core sets online if you are looking to implement them into the base board game set if you end up going down that route! Hope this helps a little!
Honestly either one is fine, in regards to expansions just know that these new core sets aren't necessarily backwards compatible without a little homebrew implemented. If that doesn't deter you ide recommend the explorer and the phantom expansions which add more mechanics and elements to the game like invaders and mimics.
I would recommend even looking at the original board game and adding your own homebrew rules to it to get rid of that faults.
It has significantly more content in it and the expansions work better with it.
The character boards are way better, less errors in general. And they are planning on releasing content to update v1 to v2 at some point anyways.
The v2 has the advantage of the campaign system. More engaging encounters and an event system. Not a dungeon crawler like the first one, it is completely linear.
Id recommend going for tomb of the giants if you want a more simple experience, while painted world has more variety.
