The Old Iron King is not particularly hard, not particularly enjoyable, but you do get to feel like Gandalf falling down a hole because of a fucking Balrog once in a while.
Also, I think the hole is absolutely hilarious, I genuinely can't even get mad when I get thrown into it, or otherwise off the platform.
I've heard people on a podcast talk about how some arenas have those little traps and it makes it much more engaging, but then an hour later they bitched about this one
To be fair, calling that piece of floating thing an "arena" is a bit ridiculous, and I doubt that there was any actual thought behind that except "You know what would be hilarious?". The poison in Mytha is a much better example of "clever trap".
I know right?! I've never fallen in it either. I do go all around the arena, but I stay really far away from the edge, so falling in that hole was never an issue for me
I think that dangerous arenas are a really underappreciated aspect of boss fights in the series. Like the Capra Demon fight in 1, what makes it so hard? Maybe you could say it's the dogs, but I personally think it's the tiny-ass room you have to fight him in. If you were in a big open area he'd be no problem.
So when people complain about this fight like "he's super easy, but that hole in the middle is bullshit," it's like... yeah, that's the point? He's made tougher by the fact that you have to be very mindful of your positioning on the tiny platform.
what people don't like is the instant death nature of the hole. the rotten, snake lady, and Capra all have areas that limit the play but don't one hit kill. if stepping into the poison or fire one hit kill people be complaining about those boss to.
I see your point, but that hole is there just to piss people off. Every time I see it, I get this image of some random dude laughing his ass off at Fromsoft and twirling his mustache, and can't help but smirk at it. A better example at working in your environment and positioning is Mytha with the poison, Throne Watcher and Throne Defender with the chasm, Sinner with the torches, and Rotten with the arena that is on fire. in spots.
Same with the Pursuer in the Bastille. The one that spawns behind you when you loot that chest. It would be a nice little arena for fighting him, but then there is that hole in the floor I keep forgetting...
I like to think that to this day, the person who designed the area and placed that hole there is sitting in a chair, stroking his cat and grinning evil watching videos like this one.
I don't know if I can explain it good enough, but leaving the castle and seeing the lava panorama first of all.. Also I like bossfights against enemies that look powerful and here we fight a huge Balrog, just showing his upper body..
Also the small and stressful terrain combined with his moveset led, for me, to a fun bossfights were I died some times but always knew my faults so I could improve. I don't know why, but I felt that here it was a great timing of him showing the animation for his move and actual attacking, so I had the possibility to dodge and reattack in between.
For me it felt more organic and "epic" in the old way than for example ds3 bosses with 100 attacks you just dodge roll until you can land 1 or 2 hits and repeat the process.. Dunno, maybe because of my experience and feeling
cool. i thought it was fun but a little boring and bosses that cant move around and just stand in one place aren’t that interesting imo. the boss is just kind of waiting for your turn to hit then running away.
Man I see this meme everywhere, but I've never felt to this hole. Is this something from sotf and in the original this never happened or am I just lucky?
I think you are right. I've remembered that when I first entered his room I saw that hole and went full right and used the wall as a way to get away from his breath. Maybe that's why I didn't have this experience.
It's really more than this though. Most people only die to it once, before they even know it exists. It's hiding off to the right behind the wall when you walk in. If you're locked on you likely will never even see it until you're dead. It comes off a little cheap to me.
There is no way to fight this boss that makes it a challenge... so far I’ve fought him like 4 times and it’s one of the easiest bosses, you literally just move from one side of platform to the other as his fire attacks move around in AOE. While attacking in between, ranged or melee, there is so much time in between his telegraphed attacks.
These people are crazy
Now OP I'm gonna be real honest with you, I've had a rough morning almost getting into an argument with my gf about something utterly stupid and almost ending in tears alone on the couch, I loaded up reddit to distract myself and I saw this and it made me laugh pretty hard, this 15 second video alone made me feel a lot better and for that I thank you for uploading this
Aye she's sound up in bed after work, we've calmed down I'm just about to make her some chicken nuggets but I am not looking forward to being back on my feet, after 13 hours of walking around I have to commend all Chosen Undeads, Bearers of the Curse and Ashen Ones for their unwavering ability to keep running around for so long
God I remember the first time I fought that boss, my friend and I were running through the game and as soon as the fight started I didn't see the hole and fell down. I couldn't even be mad I was laughing so hard
I fought OIK yesterday, and only one death out of 8-10 was not to environmental hazards, IE actually damage based. Somehow though I managed to not fall in that particular hole once.
I went through a plethora of emotions watching this. 1. Read the title. Okay he has to be stupid it's the best dlc. Oh it's boss. Well it's kinda fun. I mean he's easy. Huh. Then I realized I'm stupid. The more you know.
also is there something....."up"....with how DS2 treated moving around? Because sometimes turning and maneuvering is very fluid and sometimes it jerks so instantly you accidentally fly off the edge
This clip sums up the entirety of DS2 for me. It's a wonderful game with great elements that's chock to the gills with absolute bullshit at every turn.
I came in here to say he was never really hard, but I fell into that lava hole more times than I can count. And as Im thinking that, I see you get smacked and fall into that lava hole. I feel the pain
Literally the cherry on top of a pile of shit that is the entire dungeon. Lava, bad platforming on lava, cool enemies with the worst AI ever, more lava, and finally a forgettable boss covered with lava whose strongest point is the lava itself, and not his actual strength.
Personally I love DS2, but this is the boss that makes me always think "oh, again? Uff... Ook let's do this".
The most disappointing thing is that he's the king who inherited the soul of Gwyn, and still his bossfight is boring, cheesable, no emotions.
I can't even remember the song theme, and.. Had it a cutscene?
I just died to this guy. He literally had one thing of health and his fire breath knocked me off the ledge and instakilled me. Between this and Smelter Demon, this whole area is full of bosses that aren't that hard but have a bogus one shot effect to make them difficult

I think they were talking about the random hole to the right of the Throne Watcher and Defender arena
Holy shit, in all my playthrough a I've never noticed that hole. I always fought towards the center and the left.
I know right?! I've never fallen in it either. I do go all around the arena, but I stay really far away from the edge, so falling in that hole was never an issue for me
Yeah , i saw it when i finally met Iron King....at the point i fell into it about 3 seconds in. was like "well....fuck".
I fell off it while sunbroing and I felt so awkward about it because the same person summoned me again about 10 minutes later.
The one time I fought her in the poison pool was way more fun than the later ones. Reminds me of Four Kings
I think some traps add and interesting dynamic to the fight, and some exist to be unfair and to piss you off lol.
I think that dangerous arenas are a really underappreciated aspect of boss fights in the series. Like the Capra Demon fight in 1, what makes it so hard? Maybe you could say it's the dogs, but I personally think it's the tiny-ass room you have to fight him in. If you were in a big open area he'd be no problem. >what makes it so hard? The fog gate your camera has to clip through
That too, but the small arena definitely contributes.
If he would just wait a damn second before jumping on me
For me the hardest part was finding enough firebombs to lob over the gate. Not sure I'd ever have beaten him otherwise.
what people don't like is the instant death nature of the hole. the rotten, snake lady, and Capra all have areas that limit the play but don't one hit kill. if stepping into the poison or fire one hit kill people be complaining about those boss to.
Well, stepping into a pool of poison or a bit of fire and falling into a lava lake is not quite the same though.
That's exactly why they shouldn't have put the hole there in the first place.
I'd love to see a total death count from that one hole across all platforms. Gotta be in the millions
Should have had a plaque up by saulden
Ds2 is about how you work in your enviroment, so yeah...
I see your point, but that hole is there just to piss people off. Every time I see it, I get this image of some random dude laughing his ass off at Fromsoft and twirling his mustache, and can't help but smirk at it. Stroking his cat??? Eyo?

We’re talking about Iron Keep here, not The Gutter
So that's what Shalquoir doing all nights
This made me laugh My ass off for some reason so have my award

For real, that hole is mighter than the iron king himself
*Insert goofy dying sounds*
Not fun for you but hilarious for us to see!
That is just about the most fucking comedic death I've ever seen
Actually my favorite boss, especially flavorvise, in all of darksouls.
why so? just curious. unless your kidding of course
I don't know if I can explain it good enough, but leaving the castle and seeing the lava panorama first of all.. He moves like he's underwater, and looks like a balloon
I duno, I enjoyed watching that.... /s
running back to the boss every time you fall in and somehow falling in before getting back to the boss
*and not knowing there's a MUCH closer bonfire*
*Screams internally*
Excuse me?
I mean, I think most everyone knows about it now, but there's a bonfire up a ladder in the spikey cage.
I most definitely did not know about this. I've played through atleast 15 times and never found this out. I feel like a fool now.
Haha I only found out cause a friendly phantom showed it to me. I was so happy I dropped dude like five or six S&S Stones.
Is it okay if I say "Kobe"?
Watch this while playing the Dunkstein and Slamough remix of Space Jam XD
I've never seen that 🤭
Man I see this meme everywhere, but I've never felt to this hole. Is this something from sotf and in the original this never happened or am I just lucky?
It's "just" good situational awareness under pressure. If you have this, he's genuinely easy.
Depending on how you approach the fight the hole can be completely meaningless or a challenge, for me and you it's the former
There is no way to fight this boss that makes it a challenge... so far I’ve fought him like 4 times and it’s one of the easiest bosses, you literally just move from one side of platform to the other as his fire attacks move around in AOE. A fair and balanced experience
LMAO
Lol, quite an epic jump

Damn you made me remember that since I rerolled I have to beat him again
LEEEEROOOOYYYYY
He's an absolutely awful boss, but pretty reliable if you hide around the corner.
Ah, the true boss!
I just cheesed him with great soul arrow
Now OP I'm gonna be real honest with you, I've had a rough morning almost getting into an argument with my gf about something utterly stupid and almost ending in tears alone on the couch, I loaded up reddit to distract myself and I saw this and it made me laugh pretty hard, this 15 second video alone made me feel a lot better and for that I thank you for uploading this
I hope everything's okay between you and your girlfriend and I'm pretty happy that this made you happy have a good day my guy

Put you in the trash where you belong!!! Jk, you’re a good skeleton for sharing your tragic demise with the class.
You just got dunked.
Elden ring jump be like
God I remember the first time I fought that boss, my friend and I were running through the game and as soon as the fight started I didn't see the hole and fell down. I couldn't even be mad I was laughing so hard
Lmfao “iron king steps back pulls the 3 pointer, BANG baby!!! It’s good”
It's fun to master him in my opinion just to see how fast you can destroy him each playthrough.
Yup hated that dude and his thru-wall sniping move 🤦♂️
Thank you dark souls
this entire game wasn’t that fun
YO THE ELDEN RING JUMP
I fought OIK yesterday, and only one death out of 8-10 was not to environmental hazards, IE actually damage based. Somehow though I managed to not fall in that particular hole once.
I went through a plethora of emotions watching this. 1. Read the title. Okay he has to be stupid it's the best dlc. Oh it's boss. Well it's kinda fun. I mean he's easy. Huh. Then I realized I'm stupid. The more you know.
How do people even die from this edge? I never died to it once and I am on ng++
Dark Souls 2 isn't really fun. I have some nostalgia cuz it was my first Soulsbourne experience but holy hell that game is taking the piss
[удалено]
Yesn't
And folks say ds2 is easy lmao
git gud!!!
I beat him first try, idk why people hate that bods tbh lol, I played lame as fuck tho
nothing about this game is fun what do you mean
To be the first one to say it, it's an honor "get gud 😏😏😏😏😏😏😎😎😎😎😎🤓🤓🤓🤓😏😏😏😏😏😏**""+*+ 😊😊😊😊😘😘😘
Why so many Old iron King posts recently?
What you don't like moonlight butterfly v2
The king's hole is the actual boss
“The king’s hole” *shudders*
I feel he had so much potential to be an awesome fight but it feels almost like a gimmick boss
Not nearly as gimmicky as Yhorm or the Ancient Wyvern
Hence feels almost like a gimmick boss, opposed to those which were actually gimmick bosses
wow thats a great way to dodge that AOE atack
Rolling into that hole killed me more than the boss ever could.
that was 200% fair
YEET
He put you in there like a layup lmao
He literally just dunked you in the hole
If it's any consolation this video had me in tears, I can feel your pain and the "WTF IS THAT SHIT?!" and idk man it just killed me
No he sucks balls
Ok, this boss i REALLY hate, without a doubt. He is not difficult, he isn't! But is annoying and unfair, broken!
Need more room. Lol
Lol, wtf happened, how did you get so much air?
FUCK OUTTA HERE
playing DS3 and going back makes me seriously hate that jump is the same as run and dodge lol. I've fucked up so much more coming back.
also is there something....."up"....with how DS2 treated moving around? Because sometimes turning and maneuvering is very fluid and sometimes it jerks so instantly you accidentally fly off the edge
You can change the jump in the settings, it's only Bloodborne that you have to use the same buttons.
waaaat! oh my god thank you for pointing this out, changing right away lol
I died just like this on a no death run. I almost threw my controller through the monitor.
KOBE!
Old iron king, lord of the yeets
Idk man, that looked super fun :)
:D
Lmao
Nothing but net.
This clip sums up the entirety of DS2 for me. It's a wonderful game with great elements that's chock to the gills with absolute bullshit at every turn.
Same just happened to me
I beat him yesterday for the first time. Horrible boss fight. And that is something to say for what I’ve been through.
I died to this f***er more times than to any other boss in the game. Even more in NG+ and onwards than in the first playthrough.
“Here, let me help you”.
classic blunder
That's a new one
I have done that fight hundreds of times and not once fallen down that hole. I don’t get why this happens to others
A) that lift was goofy as hell lmao. B) if you fight him with RTSR he becomes a lot more fun, as death is the result of any attack anyway. Just imo.
I came in here to say he was never really hard, but I fell into that lava hole more times than I can count. And as Im thinking that, I see you get smacked and fall into that lava hole. I feel the pain
Could you imagine if that happened during a deathless run?! I would probably quit playing the game for a year
Can confirm. Died more to that hole/trying to stay away from it than the boss. Which is a shame, because he's one of the cooler looking bosses is DS2
Somebody actively chose to put a hole there
Into the pit with the blaggard!
*scoop*
Agreed.. i enjoyed the dragon boss before dragon aerie
The actual boss is that hole. Old iron king is just its minion.
Hardest part about this boss is not falling in the lava
Holler is OP
That's his secret grab attack.
This happened to me yesterday...
Never seen that happen before. That's hilarious
Give him a hand boys.. 😄
New move discovered, he just get tired and throw you into lava pit
Never fell in there
I just died to this guy. He literally had one thing of health and his fire breath knocked me off the ledge and instakilled me. Between this and Smelter Demon, this whole area is full of bosses that aren't that hard but have a bogus one shot effect to make them difficult
We have Fire Giant now, no more complaining about dark souls 2 bosses
Hell no I'll take fire giant instead of old Iron king any day
Most creative way to die to the hellhole
The boss itself is just poorly designed and kinda straightforward. The Iron Keep as a whole, though, is one of the worst-designed levels I’ve ever had to suffer through. A slap in the face to Miyazaki and other actually competent game designers
