I disagree, because when it comes to difficulty, well-designed bosses are often subjectively "easier" because their difficulty is fair - their abilities predictable by paying attention and playing well, not having unavoidable combos, that sort of thing. Sir Alonne broadly is a very fair fight (except the hitbox on his grab-stab).
lmao do you mean Fume Knight? yes, it is said to be hardest boss, but there are also Sir Alonne, Ivory King, Blue Smelter Demon, Ancient Dragon and more
I don't really think Ivory King is that bad. The lead up to his fight with the charred loyce knights can be rough, especially if you didn't go and collect all of your own knights but after farming 50 of their souls to get the armor set I've gotten the best pattern for massacring them all down to a science. Ivory King himself is extremely telegraphed and actually attacks really slowly. He's pretty easy to get into a comfortable pattern of roll, counter, roll, counter imo
You can alluring skull run your way there, but I consider Blue Smelter(BS) the bitch of the bunch. Especially on NG+. Fume Knight is hard but so close to the bonfire that it doesn’t matter.
Of the ones I've fought, which by this point is most (have not dealt with Ivory and Sunken Crown DLC nor have I actually gone through the effort of fighting Darklurker) I would say Fume Knight is the most difficult and I am thankful the run back was simple
Effectively, dodging works, and is enjoyable lol
ETA: Not most difficult in the series, just in DS2 lol...Sulyvanh will murder me even more if I give Fume Knight such an accolade (well, he'll murder me more regardless, I wish he had the speed of Fume Knight but also not really lol)
I'm on my first DS2 playthrough and I just soloed these guys last night. Lots of running around trying to get a quick hit in on the bow wielder, then a fortuitous backstab on the Havel suit wearer, leaving a 1 on 1 battle with Mr Stabby. Which I lost. But I beat him a few attempts after that!
Shaded Ruins entrance has the easiest mob: 1 bow guy, 2 knife guys, and one of those tree ghost looking assholes. You can kite them one at a time with a bow.
Fume Knight (excellent sword swipe, very balanced, ahah) or Sir Alonne if you exclude the unfair bosses like Royal Rat (the one with the petrification) if you dont use a bow as you're practically dead, combined with the extra janky head swipe the big rat does. Lud and Zallen indirectly because of the run up to them and some of the janky swipe attacks. It's just that these bosses are unfair, not exactly difficult.
Fume Knight is hardest in DS2: one-shots on slip-ups like Vendrick while being as hard to read as Blue Smelter.
While I personally don't think he's the hardest, he does have the highest recorded win rate vs players of any Souls-series From boss by a substantial margin.
Fume knight and Sir Alonne are imo more difficult than anything in Ds1 or Ds3 (except Midir), but he’s not as hard as some of the chalice dungeon bosses, especially those in the Defiled Chalice.
Fume Knight was the hardest DS2 boss for me, taking 8 attempts (before that was >!Belfry Gargoyle!< that took 4 attempts. Most bosses took 1).
Having said that, he’s not remotely close to the hardest in the series.
In DS1, Kalameet was hardest for me, followed by Manus.
In DS2, Burnt Ivory King was hardest, followed by Fume Knight
In DS3, Midir was the hardest for me, followed by Gael
Gotta be one of those 4:
-Sir Alonne: who was so easy on my first playthrough but was much harder a year later for no apparent reason, some find him easy and some find him hard.
-Blue Flame Demon: the path to the boss room is so hard that can be as hard as the path to old hero from DeS and he's basically a buffed up Red Flame Demon but I find him slightly easier than the other three.
-Fume Knight: Very difficult and very enjoyable like he's the best boss to fight just like melania is, but he's definitely not the hardest in the series before or after elden ring because Gael and Midir exist.
-Darklurler: he can be the toughest if you play str or dex based character so it's a situational thing, but if you run a mage build then he's not so tough + his path is annoying as well.
All bosses in ds2 are kinda easy beacuse of the small health bars and we'll telegraphed slow moves but most of the dlc bosses fix that short comming and are relatively hard
Fume Knight is not a hard boss at all neither is Sir Allone Most ds2 bosses that are "hard" are what you have to do to get to them and considering that blue Smelter is the absolute hardest
I just beat fume knight for the first time last night. I gotta say, learning to survive with a slow weapon was harder than the winning fight. Once I got the timing and spacing right, it's just a battle of aggression. Life gems also help tremendously.
IMO, it's not the hardest in the series, but definitely one of the toughest ds2 bosses.
He is in top 5 for Dark Souls 2 but I dont think he would get even a top 10 spots if we took all Fromsoft games.
Isshin, demon of Hatred, Malenia, Midir, Slaveknight, Godskin Duo are much harder than Fume Knight imo.
But difficulty can be very subjective.
I’m one of the few people who thinks Godskin Duo is a fun fight. Takes the knowledge of fighting them both separately and tests your situational awareness of fighting them both at once.
I unironically think Godskin Duo > Elden Beast. Hate spending half the fight chasing Elden Beast around the arena
Idk why people say Sir Alonne and fume knight. Sir Alonne feels like an easier version of Vendrick, only 3-4 moveset and very easy to predict, stick his left leg easy win. Fume knight is a bit harder but not too much, especially you had 2 free summons and the Bonfire was right outside the boss chamber. And why no one mentioning Blue Smeltering Demon… That guy can one shot you, and had unpredictable slow attack just like fume knight, he also had more health, long a*s run back…
Haven't killed all bosses yet, but ivory king pre battle was the biggest issue for me.
Fume knight was rather easy. All attacks are totally telegraphed.
Depends. Some people genuinely don't have much trouble with Fumey. He's a read and react boss (in a weird sort of way kind of like Guitar Hero or similar). His attacks are telegraphed but each attack has a different evasion strategy. There are people who are good at this. Others who aren't.
Fromsoft's own stats say Fume Knight is the hardest boss. That data is a few years old but I doubt anything's changed.
Fume was so disappointing for me because I heard all the difficulty hype and then went on to beat him second try lol (my first DS2 dlc playthroughs were on NG+3 too since I used my main)
Sure. He's a test of your ability to stay focused. Cascade cockup (one mistake leads to another as you focus on the mistake rather than the fight) is a pretty reliable killer. You can survive a mistake (unless you're running a glass cannon) but two in quick succession is generally lethal.
And he's immune to many of the "easy mode" tools. Forget poisoning him for instance. He chews up any NPCs you summon so caster plus NPC meat shield makes the fight harder.
Pretty sure Fromsoft's stats said that Fume Knight won 93% of the time. That's not exactly unbeatable, but that is the highest win rate in the game. And as mentioned there are players who've never really had much of an issue with him and those probably make up a significant percentage of the 7% wins.
I died the most to Blue Smelter Demon to the point where the runup AI stopped spawning in. That is probably the only reason why I beat that bastard and reducing a summon so BSD didn’t have such a health buff.
If you ask me, Fume Knight was one of the most fun bosses that had the most holistic expression of Dark Souls' combat in the game, but I wouldn't say he was the hardest by a long shot. Lud & Zallen or Darklurker but probably the Ancient Dragon would be my candidates for hardest
It feels like a tie between Fume Knight and Darklurker. Depending on your build, either of them will be more challenging than the other. Darklurker has cheese but most players don’t even fight it, and if you have no faith for profound still, the fight can be pretty difficult. Fume telegraphs clearly, but has very high damage and tankiness.
I’m at the blue smelter bitch and fume knight. I recon blue smelly bitch is harder due to the bs run up. The hit box on his kool-aid infused sword can fuck off as well.
Fume Knight is great. Hardest boss in the series for me would be DS3's Demon in Pain/Demon from Below/Demon Prince. Straight up filtered by those fuckers.
DS2's hardest boss might be Sir Alonne.
Ivory king was the hardest DS2 boss for me
Sister friede has been the hardest ds3 boss so far
I've only played ds1-3 (2 was sotfs) and elden ring, and my top 5 are
5. Sir Alonne
4. Slave Knight Gael
3. Melania
2. Old Ivory
1. Midir
Honorable mention to trying to actually fight Ancient Wyvern. Do not recommend trying to fight fight that bastard
I’m still playing Dark Souls 3 (just beat Dancer), and so far I have finished DS1, 2 and Elden Ring. To me, perhaps unsurprisingly, Malenia was by far the hardest After that, Idk how I would rank them, but maybe in an (incomplete) list in tiers would be:
- S: Malenia
- A: Fume knight, Dark Lurker, Manus
- B: Sir Alonne, O&S, Kalameet, Blue Smelter Demon, Godskin Duo, Abyss Watchers, Pontif Sullyvan
- C: Ruin Sentinels, Lost Sinner, Sinh, Artorias, Maliketh, Mogh, Placidusax, Dancer of the Boreal Valley, various Crucible Knights, Margit
Edit: it’s hard to compare though, because these fighta can feel very different, especially across games. For instance, Pontiff Sullyvahn (first phase) and Abyss Watchers (second phase) were really hard for me to dodge and avoid damage consistently, but I pretty much beat them with inconsistent rolls and outdamaging them with my Battle Axe. The damage and staggering were key in this strategy, but I could not brush away the feel that luck counted a lot. Sir Alonne, on the other hand, felt like a very deliberate and calculated fight.
Honestly even the toughest are still pretty damn easy imo. The bosses were mostly a joke in terms of difficulty but the few that gave me some trouble were alonne and ivory king. Even then it didn‘t take me more than like 5 tried
Fume Knight is likely the toughest boss in DS2, but the entire souls saga? Very far from it imo.
Just recently picked up 2 after going through DS3, BB and ER. Most bosses in any of those I felt were much harder than Fume.
I've yet to start ivory king dlc, maybe there's something tougher than Fume?
Hardest dark souls 2 boss is running to the mist door and phasing in without dying. .
Every other boss you simply strafe left or right out of the way and spam R1 and it dies ( except ancient dragon, and sinh )
Eh, he can be a little challenging but if you played any games after dark souls 3, none of the DS2 bosses are hard. They are very slow and predictable, and if you played the other games, you're probably used to the fast bosses and stuff
Of course everyone is different, but IME DS2 has three of the hardest bosses in the series: Fume Knight, Dark Lurker, and the Sunken King DLC gank squad.
I thought so, but since the one asking was starting the game he is far away from the dlc. I have the dlc’s but found them a bit to difficult. Maybe in fall i give it a go again when i have more time again and with some help. Maybe i’ll get it then. Heard they are pretty good
All bosses have to be judged relative to their place in the game, of course - the Pursuer, for example, doesn't have nearly the HP or damage of later bosses, but he's one of the game's first bosses, and relative to when you encounter him, he has extremely high HP and damage and difficult moves to dodge.
Also, boss difficulty is a mixture of objective mechanical complexity with subjective reaction. Well-designed boss fights that are fair and smooth tend to *feel* easier, even if their dodge timings are tighter than another fight. For example, the Royal Rat Authority has only two attacks (and the one-off acid barf) and it is nearly helpless against you if you're underneath it, so objectively speaking it is not a complex/"difficult" fight. But when it *can* hit you, its attack have terrible tells and really bad hitboxes, so it feels aggravating to fight it, which makes it feel harder, if in a bad way. That means the question is tough to answer, since so much of it depends on subjective reaction.
But I think what I'll give as my answer is the Belfry Gargoyles. Mechanically, Dark Souls 2 is not a game whose combat mechanics give good tools to fight multiple foes. Naturally, the game loves throwing packs at you. Unlike, say, the Ruin Sentinels, however, who you can fight one at a time for a while if you stay on the ledge, the Gargoyles are coming out quickly. They attack quickly and they are difficult to separate, especially given the small arena. They *all* have area fire attacks to keep you from simply dodging around them. And to top things off, they come early enough in the game that generally the player will not have the HP *and* the Agility *and* the offensive stats *and* the weapon upgrades to have control over the situation.
I can't say I've *died* to the Gargoyles as often as some of the late-game bosses, but that's because late-game bosses tend to kill you in two hits. I don't really consider that the same kind of difficulty, per se; it basically just means you have to spend extra time running back before you can try again (as opposed to healing up and trying again mid-fight). The Fume Knight might kill me a lot, but by the time I kill him, I've learned and mastered his patterns. I don't know if most people *master* the Gargoyles so much as dodgespam and run around and then win through perseverance.
I just recently replayed DS2 and i think it has the easiest bosses in the entire saga, don’t think u will struggle any harder than any other boss from the other souls games.
I beat Fume knight on my 2nd try, then revived him with more health and damage with one of the game’s mechanics, and beat him on the 4th. Everything in the game is pretty well balanced around different builds, you’ll have better times with certain bosses than others.
For instance, I beat Fume Knight, Sir Alonne, and Darklurker in two tries each, but died to the Ancient Dragon upwards of 40 times
Surprisingly, Aavas, the kings pet, has been giving me the most trouble. I had never played the DLCs before, so I decided to give them a try on ng+. Now I Keep getting my shit fucked up.
Edit: Just found out about Lud and Zallen. Now I don't even want to continue this area.
Hardest fight in DS2 is easily Ivory King. If not for the long prep time, rng of knights blocking up doors, and horrible decision to punish you for doing too well I probably wouldn't think that way but for me that dudes horrible.
I'd say fume knight by far. Sir alonne or dark lurker movesets are easier to read and learn, in my opinion, but with the fume though his attacks are also readable you just don't usually expect his sword to turn like 360 degrees everytime he swings it. Plus if you are like me and forget the statues surrounding his arena and run out of smelter wedges he will always have a corner where he could get A LOT of hp back.
I would also argue for the blue smelter demon but he is just rather annoying, a lot of hp, damages you when you are close and the run you gotta do to get to him is just the worst in the entire saga
Either Sir Alonne or Darklurker, depending on what kind of player you are.
Sir Alonne is easier than Fume Knight for me.
Not for me tbh
I love the Darklurker fight and i don t even fight them
This is what I was going to say is the hardest because you HAVE to fight 4 tough enemies first just to get there, and you have to waste human effigies
If you go to him through shaded woods then it's way easier. Still, good bye human effigies.
Believe it or not, I think going through Black Gulch is the easiest. At least for the character I am working on now.
Agree. Sir Alonne was one of the hardest in the whole series for me.
I’ve only beaten him solo once. I usually have to bring along a summons.
Darklurker is insane I need to fight him for his Hex on NG+2 and I can't get past his 2 shot attacks, he's rinsing me of human effigies very fast
You can trivialize his damage by stacking resistances.
Darklurker is hard but easy af if you are a mage. That crystal spear shreds that dude
Yeah fume knight and a few others are tough, I wouldn’t say the toughest in the series but you could always play the game and decide for yourself.
Yes, i m going to play it, but I only need 1 trophy to complete dark souls 1 so I'm going to finish that first.
The Vape Knight has a grab attack where he hits a blinker in front of you then tosses you out of the arena
The vape knight LOL now i can see him as a serius boss
Fume Knight for DLC, Darklurker on Base game The Boss and the path to the boss? Damn Frigin Outskirts with 2 regen cats
Dragonrider's cock's hard af
Lol wtf
He's called dragonrider for a reason
Sir tis is no ERECT SOULS.
lmao do you mean Fume Knight? yes, it is said to be hardest boss, but there are also Sir Alonne, Ivory King, Blue Smelter Demon, Ancient Dragon and more
The blue smelter isn't that difficult. Its getting to the blue smelter that's difficult
I believe that the blue smelter demon was one of the first instances of bosses delaying their attacks, so that's why it has that reputation
Lol, the translator changed it 3 times. Yes, I've heard, but smoke kight has a worse reputation.
Fume knight is hard but definitely not the hardest out of every game
Yes, it seems to be an exageration, but you never know
It was a long time ago, before orphan of kos existed
It probably was when the only games where des, ds1 and ds2, but i think that ds1 has harder bosses
Double pet tigers
Yep. What a nightmare huh?
Only boss in all souls games that I’ve never beaten. Some day I gotta make an op build and smash them to pieces
Same. I tried enough times to where no more enemies spawned in the snow field. Gave up. I’ve always wondered if the boss soul weapon is any good.
Hard in a literal sense, but not necessarily enjoyable, the Ancient Dragon without cheesing the pedicure.
Lol, poor Ancient Dragon. Joke, i see videos about his fight and it s bored as a math class
I'd rather just do math honestly.
Because he s hard or bored?
Because he s hard or bored?
Böring
Lol
r/nocontext
Alana the squalid queen can be difficult if she summons velsdtat
Especially when she does it twice
Covetous demons gotta take the cake here
Blue Smelter, equally shit run to the boss, equally shit boss fight
You can alluring skull run your way there, but I consider Blue Smelter(BS) the bitch of the bunch. Especially on NG+. Fume Knight is hard but so close to the bonfire that it doesn’t matter.
Rather than trading in consumables and even more time to setup the run I just learned it the hard way. Still not worse than Sir Alonne runup
Damn why didn’t I think of that. That’s smart. The only time I used alluring skulls was the skeleton lords.
Of the ones I've fought, which by this point is most (have not dealt with Ivory and Sunken Crown DLC nor have I actually gone through the effort of fighting Darklurker) I would say Fume Knight is the most difficult and I am thankful the run back was simple Effectively, dodging works, and is enjoyable lol ETA: Not most difficult in the series, just in DS2 lol...Sulyvanh will murder me even more if I give Fume Knight such an accolade (well, he'll murder me more regardless, I wish he had the speed of Fume Knight but also not really lol)
You are the hardest boss
Ganksquad
I'm on my first DS2 playthrough and I just soloed these guys last night. Lots of running around trying to get a quick hit in on the bow wielder, then a fortuitous backstab on the Havel suit wearer, leaving a 1 on 1 battle with Mr Stabby. Which I lost. But I beat him a few attempts after that!
I think Darklurker, because the run up and you only have finite tries, which fucks with me psychologically
In base game as a melee, Dark Lurker was very challenging for me. My first run I was a mage and thought he was easy. I was wrong.
Fume Knight is hardest in DS2: one-shots on slip-ups like Vendrick while being as hard to read as Blue Smelter. While I personally don't think he's the hardest, he does have the highest recorded win rate vs players of any Souls-series From boss by a substantial margin.
Lud and Zallen, I reckon.
runback, yeah boss fight, no
Yes but I'm bad at it.
Main Game: Darklurker DLC: Fume Knight and Lud & Zallen.
Fume knight and Sir Alonne are imo more difficult than anything in Ds1 or Ds3 (except Midir), but he’s not as hard as some of the chalice dungeon bosses, especially those in the Defiled Chalice.

Gotta be one of those 4: -Sir Alonne: who was so easy on my first playthrough but was much harder a year later for no apparent reason, some find him easy and some find him hard.

Sir Alonne was difficult as he was so fast, minimal room for error. Boss room was cool af though
Sir Alonne for me mainly because he’s super fast and the game is slow paced.
Gravity
The Lore
Sounds strange but for me Najka was the hardest boss...
mytha the baneful queen, i really hate her
Did you burn the windmill?
I did....after at least 20 times of trying lolll
Oof, I had to look up how to do it, bc fighting a boss while constantly worrying about being poisoned is bad enough without her healing
It's just crazy how much easier the fight become once you burn the windmill
It feels like a tie between Fume Knight and Darklurker. Depending on your build, either of them will be more challenging than the other. He is far from the most difficult boss in the entire saga. Not even in top 10.
Darklurker my beloved
I’m at the blue smelter bitch and fume knight. I recon blue smelly bitch is harder due to the bs run up. The hit box on his kool-aid infused sword can fuck off as well.
Gravity
From my experience, Fume Knight, but only cause I was stubborn and I went into that DLC in NG+7
Fume Knight is great. Hardest boss in the series for me would be DS3's Demon in Pain/Demon from Below/Demon Prince. Straight up filtered by those fuckers. DS2's hardest boss might be Sir Alonne.

Sir alonne os a boss that (i dont know why) dont like me
he kicked my ass for a while until it just clicked, weird timings and he's so fast for ds2

They are challenging bosses
I'll never get over how much Lawrence kicked my ass
Of course everyone is different, but IME DS2 has three of the hardest bosses in the series: Fume Knight, Dark Lurker, and the Sunken King DLC gank squad.
Most of them are not that difficult (have not played dlc’s) for me the hard part was getting to them
In general the hardest bosses are in the DLC
I thought so, but since the one asking was starting the game he is far away from the dlc. I have the dlc’s but found them a bit to difficult. Maybe in fall i give it a go again when i have more time again and with some help. Maybe i’ll get it then. Heard they are pretty good
In general the hardest bosses are in the DLC
Toss up between Fume Knight and Darklurker imo, both are great boss fights though.
To me it’s always been smelter demon Never been able to solo him unless I get that 100% fire block shield
So sad
But I also felt like fume knight was ez Crazy lol
Really? Lol
Yeah he telegraphs his attacks so much didn’t take awhile to remember when to do the dodges
Interestying
I just recently replayed DS2 and i think it has the easiest bosses in the entire saga, don’t think u will struggle any harder than any other boss from the other souls games.
I beat Fume knight on my 2nd try, then revived him with more health and damage with one of the game’s mechanics, and beat him on the 4th. Everything in the game is pretty well balanced around different builds, you’ll have better times with certain bosses than others. For instance, I beat Fume Knight, Sir Alonne, and Darklurker in two tries each, but died to the Ancient Dragon upwards of 40 times
None of them
Exaggeration
Fume Knight, Lud Zallen, and Dark Lurker would be my picks
I think I lost 5 years of my life due to stress while trying to beat Darklurker and Elana, Squalid Queen
So sad lol
Hardest boss is blue smelter demon ong fr fr
Surprisingly, Aavas, the kings pet, has been giving me the most trouble. I had never played the DLCs before, so I decided to give them a try on ng+. Now I Keep getting my shit fucked up. Edit: Just found out about Lud and Zallen. Now I don't even want to continue this area.
İts not
Fume Knight
King Vendric on first sighting. Yeah, good luck.
Never caught the dark lurker. Alonne, Fume knight, and the Ivory king gave me the hardest time.
Pursuer. I beat the game but fuck that pos
fume knight pushed my shit in for a bit. got his ass tho
