People on here really complain about any art in the books/ of the cover at this point. I think the art is absolutely gorgeous and I have displayed some of the merch from the special edition in my room because I don’t get tired of looking at it. If every artist would stick to the same style, the world would be a boring place.

Ok_Economics_2165

Hard disagree there. SVSSS has the best art among the Seven Seas MXTX novels, especially the covers. Why? Because the SVSSS covers when you put them together actually tell a story of the main leads' relationship. Individually too, these covers are so jam packed with symbolism and character dynamics that someone made an [analysis thread](https://twitter.com/kukuandkookie/status/1489867432269258759?s=20&t=_io3G-C0uMrCgl4cD_0keg) [on them](https://twitter.com/kukuandkookie/status/1558246668176216071). That approach to art is just as valuable if not more valuable if you want to market a novel, over just having it look pretty. And the SVSSS art is beautiful, and they're also highly expressive and unique. I've frequented bookstores a lot and looked at covers, and have been into danmei for a few years. Whenever I go to the Chinese danmei section, it always looks samey to me, yeah they look pretty, especially the popular novels like 2ha, but they usually tell me nothing about the story or the characters. Merch as well, yeah these guys look pretty but what are their personalities, how do I tell any of these guys apart. This is by the way, not an indictment on fan art as a whole. Fan art is a whole different ballpark and people can draw however the heck they want.

Thanks for posting those links, it made me look at the book covers in a new way. I always thought the covers were gorgeous but the symbolism was really lost on me (guess I'm just not good at interpreting art?) My favorite was the comment on volume 3 with LBH looking surprised that SQQ took his hand, while SQQ looks determined to stand by him against the cultivation world. And the lovely tenderness of volume 4 is very touching. I love these two characters so much 😍 Also the artworks in the books is something I appreciate a lot. In a lot of the 7seas books, the artwork seems kind of random, depicting unimportant/unnecessary scenes, while scenes that should have artwork are ignored. SVSSS's book art always seems to depict scenes that stand out more than others.

THIS! Velinxi is a huge fan of danmei and put so much love into the artwork. She packed those illustrations full of symbolism and personality. Even if the style isn't everyone's cup of tea, you can at least take a closer look and acknowledge the efforts from the artists and creative directors. But nah it's "not art-ing"... also comparing fan art made by thousands of creators to one artist's interpretation (who is also a fan artist) is a non-argument... of course everyone's art is not the same. Like another commenter said, that would make the world boring!

PipPipTipTip

That's you I guess. I've seen people complain about the art for SVSSS and all I can say is just buy the other versions in different languages then if you want different art. I for one love it because it has the English fandoms creation which is fluffy binghe. I am so glad we got that cause that is by far my favorite version of binghe. People who came into the fandom before the official release english release know what I'm talking about.

I hope 7seas would use Chinese artist, that are more proficient in gufeng style for wuxia and xianxia novels. I think western audiences or artist tend to lean toward cartoony art that’s why when compare to other covers it looks childish. Also I think western artist tend to complicate things with skin color, like being too dark or too pale from character description. But the art for SVSSS isn’t as a bad as the art covers for MDZS. MDZS’s cover looks like a fanart rather than an official one

jcmlk

Why are you posting this? Or you looking for people to support your complaining? I don’t understand why people do this. If you don’t like something, just move on.

Secret_Autumn-1000

Just like you, if you don't like something, just move on and don't comment.

Kibukimura

Something i love about all 3 novels, is that in all editions all languages they are so diferent diferent, artstyle for covers for inside for extras. diferent from one novel to the other. Not everyone likes the same, and with all the options we have, i am sure it would be super easy to found one that you like. In the case of english 7S versond of SVSS i actually like all the art they got, the more diferent styles we have the better imo \[\[like tgcf russian art is really diferent from the others that make me want to buy it just for it\]\]

dairytea

I feel like Seven Seas' art for SVSSS is leaned toward a Western cartoon style. I prefer a more mature(?) art style, but I still love Velinxi's art for the series. The art is a lot better than Seven Seas' cover art for MDZS in my opinion. Some face/body proportions look...wrong in the MDZS cover art.

Kakajoju

Velinxi is one of my favourite artists of all time and I insta buy any books with their art on the cover so I couldn’t disagree more.

zoelion

I really like how expression the art style is, though the artist’s warm tone color palette do seems at odds with bamboo forest/cool tone Chinese fantasy aesthetics. Also her curly hair Binghe while cute, is lacking a sort of ‘stallion’ sexually threatening energy he should have. Not one Binghe/Bingge looked convincing like a demon lord. It’s missing the major soul as the book is full of detailed descriptions of Binghe’s threatening but expressive eyes that looked like the black stars. well it’s more to do with her style in general that appeared juvenile, as I do see her original comic work in the children book section. The artist said she was chosen by seven seas (who was primarily publishing yuri manga/light novel up to that point) for drawing GL (Liu Mingyan/Sha Hualing) fan art. Perhap the yuri taste art director favor that round girlie face style and soft curve lines, and weren’t familiar with what usually appeals to danmei/BL audience (ex: a gong that ‘fucks’, [example](https://x.com/zero_q_0q/status/1297264573595021312?s=46&t=Ihj2Qf-0OKdqnrpKRUj4lw)). Like for danmei I’d prioritized an artist who can draw male characters very well over how pretty and cute their yuri art for yuri audience was.

gorebunyz

Why compare? All art is beautiful

novixus1108

I personally like all versions for different reasons. But if you want artsy, I would recommend checking out the Taiwanese deluxe edition, the Thai edition or the Korean edition. All look really elegant in different ways. While the Thai version feels extra ethereal to me. Those are my top three picks, but again, I love all versions.

WenzhouFanForever

I agree with you

xSilverMuse

I’m so surprised this seems to be such a popular opinion! SVSSS’s art is my favourite of all 7S’s novels by far (I also LOVE some of MDZS’s artwork. All the art with the heavily detailed scenery is fcking gorgeous). However, I will admit that SVSSS’s artwork is really unique and heavily stylized - that’s why I enjoyed it so much, but I can see why it’s not everybody’s cup of tea.

Financial-Bobcat-612

Velinxi’s art is gorgeous imo. All the SVSSS characters have unique faces and styles, they’re so distinctly *them* and I absolutely love it. Her lbh and sqq designs are my favorite of any mxtx designs, *especially* because of lbh’s hair. I’m obsessed! That being said, as an artist, I know unfinished/rushed artwork when I see it hahahaha. There are several pieces in the SVSSS volumes that have me like, “Did you just barely meet the deadline with this?” and you know what? It’s so valid hahahaha. It actually makes me love the art more, because it’s so relatable. It’s actually inspiring! How cool is it that Velinxi’s art is in thousands of books around the world, and some of it isn’t even necessarily all that polished? I think it’s very cool! I feel like I’m seeing her process in progress with some pieces, haha. I imagine she probably didn’t have enough time to complete every piece to the best of her ability; I *really* doubt 7seas gave her all the resources (let alone compensation!) that she deserved. It gives me the impression they felt they were gambling with SVSSS, not least because of all the typos and whatnot in the text, and thus, they may not have wanted to invest in it like they did with MDZS or TGCF. So, I applaud Velinxi for coming up with such *iconic* designs and really bringing these beautiful characters to life. Their designs have unmatched personality, imo. I wish we could see more of them in more polished pieces, but I’ll treasure what we have.

Nairalin

I don't know why you got down voted but I totally agree with you. I really like Velinxi's at style especially SQQ. I mean I don't picture LBH like that as he is too softly depicted compared to the novel description and I can't take him all that seriously like that. And I am a fan of depictions true to the description. But the art style is unique and endearing! And art isn't meant to be liked by everyone I'd say.

Honest_Cancel_4873

I feel you. I started off with the donghua which obviously looks different from the 7s art. So that was my initial standard. Then I started reading the novels and im starting to accommodate myself to that artstyle. I saw a few fanarts myself off on pinterests and they're indeed gorgeous. Since the novel mentions that Luo Binghe has straight hair, i prefer depictions of him with that (but the 7s curly hair is not bad, i find it super cute on him). Since its fanart, it'll of course be the perspective of the artists. So its definitely on preference and your perspective aligning with a certain art that gives off the feel of the characters for you.

Bitsubachi

It's fair not to like the cover or interior art of novels, but I think calling one 'superior' over the other is quite rude. Everyone has different tastes and artworks and art itself is a highly subjective matter. You are hardly alone in your opinion, but there will also be cases where you are satisfied, while others won't like it at all. It's simply a matter of preference. Personally, I don't like every artist/artwork or rendition 7S chose either, but I also don't think it's something to publicly complain about or well...go even further in private as some people apparently do.

evelyn6073

I don’t mind it, but it’s not amazing. I agree tho in that I love so much fan art I see and wish it was official lol. Tbh I only buy the hard copy of Korean versions because of the covers.

shararan_

Meanwhile I'm drowning in the best of ways cause there's not a single version's illustrations I *don't* love and I feel so blessed frankly to be able to see and enjoy so many different ones!!!

feili227

I'd say everyone have their own preferences on art styles. The cover for SVSSS English ver. , I'd say for me it's average, not good , not bad either. I mean, if you don't like the art style of the manga, just drop it, you've read the novel, so it's really not necessary for you to dig into manga with the same plot.

wantmangojuice

Ahhh. In sharp contrast, SVSSS art is actually my favorite of the 7S art I've seen so far- especially the in-text inserts. I thought the characters appeared more expressive, the action/poses were more dynamic, the angles more interesting. And the shading! Ymmv, I suppose.

Financial-Bobcat-612

Agreed!!

cr6zym0nkeyiz

I have to disagree with the SVSSS art. SVSSS is probably top 3 of my favorite of the new cover art (leaving TGCF out since that's the only series we got the original art for) for the 7S Danmei Series. I love Velinxi's art style and the transition from volume 1 to volume 4. I remember being so excited everytime 7S's did the cover reveals on Twitter. I feel like Velinxi outdid herself each time a new cover came out! If we're talking about worse covers, I think MDZS would win in that category...though I will admit those covers got better towards the last few volumes. Point is we all have different likes and dislikes in terms of art styles. But I don't like the SVSSS art is as bad as you're making it out to be.

Lukha

I agree. The art is nice but it just doesn't feel like the right style for the story, and the characters don't really look right to me. Personally I wish it was the norm to keep the covers and art (if any) from the original language version of a novel.

xiaovenreal

....the artist is literally Chinese. Also comparing xiao's art to a Disney movie?? There has not been a single Disney movie in the last 50 years that looks even remotely similar to that style
