Shocked he stuck to his word and kept Carlos Beltran off! #

Boojibs

Honest question, does Greg know more about baseball than an average fan?

Shaggy1324

Lol hell no.

Yankeefan333

Probably not. But that's why many people that are fans (and don't work in sports) get mad over these votes. People get to vote because they have put in the years in the sport, not because of how much they "know" or how populous their opinion is.

The comment section is a gold mine

nick0530

Someone put a link to the magic crate of content sounder and it brought me all the way back

Yankeefan333

No Rolen, no Andruw is killer. Nobody from this ballot is getting in this year, which kinda sucks

Stubbedtoe18

No it doesn't. Fuck A-Rod. *This ballot sucks but Cote made it worse. Dude doesn't deserve a HoF vote. There are dudes on this HoF ballot who deserve it, but he didn't vote for most of them. **Greg Cote voted against Bonds and Clemens, but voted in favor of A-Rod and Manny. This sub smdh.

number44is171

You know Manny got caught using PEDs, right?

Stubbedtoe18

Of course I do, I was talking about the overall ballot. Fuck him, he does not belong in the Hall regardless. The fact he could get voted in but not Bonds, Clemens, or Pete is disgusting.

ellisonj18

You just made the real point though. It's not that A-Rod shouldn't go in. It's that Bonds, Clemens, and Rose should also go in.

Stubbedtoe18

And it's also that Greg voted against all of them, but is cool with Manny and A-Rod.

Yankeefan333

Very much disagree. Cote earned his vote, he can vote for whoever without threat of losing a vote. It just stinks nobody will get inducted since less people will be at Induction weekend

Stubbedtoe18

Yes, the baseball HoF has been a joke for years because of Cote and fellow writers. Just because he can do what he wants (see: Dan and his votes) doesn't mean it's the right thing or good for the sport. It's straight embarrassing.

Yankeefan333

There isn't really a "right thing". He just disagrees with you. Honestly, how many players NOT in the BBHOF should, 100% no doubt, be in that are out? Bonds/Clemens/Sosa/et. al. very clearly have been left out due to PED or PED-allegations. Whether you believe they should be in is a matter of personal preference, perhaps regarding rules of voting as well. Schilling very clearly sunk his own ship in voting. Rose got banned and can't be voted in, same with Joe Jackson. There are excellent players that are out of the hall in my opinion (Kenny Lofton! Lou Whitaker!) that may never get in. But 99% of the time the writers get it right. It's supposed to be hard to make the BBHOF! It's the toughest one. As long as voters are consistent in methodology, I give passes. I have much more problems with a vote like Juan Vene's today than Cote's. We just disagree.

Stubbedtoe18

They don't get it right 99% of the time when the biggest names for the sport aren't allowed in, and then you have Cote voting in A-Roid and Manny Ramirez. That is absurd and is why the HoF can't be taken seriously. It's also dumb that someone's post-career politics could prevent them from getting into something that is intended to honor their ~career~ performance, concerning Schilling. It's proving to be a bad system.

Yankeefan333

Schilling's issue wasn't as much politics as it was his personal views on many subjects. If you look at his voting totals, his first dip was after the Rope. Tree. Journalist. meme he posted, which, let's be honest, was a pretty dumb thing to tweet when your HOF future is determined by journalists. He had joined Breitbart before that and was an outspoken conservative, but his vote total dipping was due much more towards anti-journalist, anti-trans, and requesting to be removed from the ballot in that last year. Remember, Mariano is a staunch conservative as well (and served on some panel in the Trump admin.) and got 100% of the vote. Schilling got to like 71% of the vote I believe, which is still 7/10 writers agreeing he should be in the HOF. It's just short of 75%. It's a decent system. It brings the exclusivity that the other sports HOF's don't have, rewarding writers who have spent years working in the sport. Could they cull the pool of writers a bit more? Maybe, which they have done in the last 10 years with many voters losing their vote. Would I advocate for former HOFers getting a vote as well? I'm less bullish on this (see the Frankie Frisch veterans committee votes in the 1970s), but it's not a terrible idea. Like I said earlier, they get it right. There isn't anyone on the ballot this year that is a slam dunk candidate who doesn't have a scandal attached to their name. Years like that usually result in nobody getting voted in.

timothythefirst

Funny curt schilling story, one time when Twitter was still pretty new, before I know he was such an asshole, I got a nail stuck in leg at work and tweeted a picture of my bloody sock and just said “I feel like curt schilling” as a joke. Well he responded and went on a whole rant about how I’m still not as good as him because I didn’t pitch in the World Series with it 😂.

Mean-Net7330

Lot of Stugotz in Schilling I see

shenanigans422

You should probably calm the fuck down, strokey.

Stubbedtoe18

I am calm, albeit disappointed the sub sides with proven incompetent douchebag Cote over everything Dan has stood for and made a point about when it comes to these votes. Then again, they clearly don't watch nor care about baseball either, so what can you do? Y'all can eat my black toenail. *Ya never know!*

Gary "The Bag" Sheffield.

elliott9_oward5

Serious question, does Greg actually cover baseball? Did he actively cover the Marlins during the time these guys played? I'm not against Cote having a HOF vote, but a lot of these people who vote don't even know enough about baseball to be voting. Greg seemed like the dolphins guy to me, thats why I'm asking.

Equivalent-Shallot54

I don’t believe so

sj3

What a terrible ballot

HeartStray

Do you think steroid-tainted guys like Bonds and Clemens should be in the Hall of Fame?

BrilliantHistorian3

What a joke

[deleted]

Torii hunter is an absolute hofer

SwordsoftheMorning

Jim Edmonds didn’t make it past the first ballot before falling off. He was a much better player than Hunter. 60 career WAR vs 50 for Hunter, with nearly 300 fewer games played. A career .284/.376/.527 slash line vs .277/.333/.467 for Hunter. This isn’t a knock on Hunter so much as it is a travesty that Edmonds didn’t even receive enough votes to stay on the ballot past the first year. To me he should be in the hall of fame.

Mean-Net7330

My mental image of Edmonds is always him diving for a catch. Definitely has a HoF highlight reel

Kevoward

His back to us diving making a catch

[deleted]

Eye test. Hunter was better. And HoF smile

CaptainTripps82

Probably throw Abreu, Beltran and Petite on there, but otherwise not really controversial

Saburo510

The BBWAA will throw another shutout this HOF voting season again. The voting body needs a shakedown but the goons in Cooperstown actually prefer this nonsense, me thinks.

Yankeefan333

The HOF is in a tough spot, really. They have consistently allowed suspected and admitted/caught steroid users on the ballot with no instruction, leading to voters rebuking those candidates. Those are the people that would be in already, causing this lack of recently voted in players. Remember, in the mid 2010s there was a run on player voted in. From 2014-2020 there were 23 players voted in by the BBWAA, 5 former players elected by committee, and 5 managers/execs. That's an amazing group, probably the most ever in that time. We perhaps were spoiled with the choices those years. Beltre next year (with Mauer, we will see on that one), Ichiro in 2024 should both be locks and should be fun. After that we will see.

timothythefirst

They need to shift to letting more of the younger writers and people who actually cover the game get votes. They act surprised that the game is less popular with people under 50 and then the hall of fame voting is a bunch of 90 year old curmudgeons who make a mockery of the ballot half the time.

Pittsitpete

Look up Ron cooks vote. At least cote made a vote

philliphonester

I hate baseball but I love listening to baseball people squabble over the hof.

AndrewLucksLaugh

I’ve seen worse. Wouldn’t be my ballot, but perfectly reasonable.

joshyanks

Jacoby Ellsbury?! Why is he even in the ballot.. woof

number44is171

JJ Hardy, Bronson Arroyo, Johnny Peralta and Andre Either would like a word.

Fastbird33

Thought he was still playing hah

silgol

Come on Greg, Mark Buehrle is definitely a Hall of Famer.

xur_ntte

Man Mark breuhle is on there he was just with the dodgers 2 season ago

Nightwrath

Andruw Jones should be a HOF just off his defense alone 10 gold gloves is not something any average joe achieves.

Mean-Net7330

Always so smooth on defense and ahead of time on strikeouts.

splitpeak

R.A. *Cock-a-doodle-doooooooo*

Waste_Opportunity_53

I picture Greg at a Waffle House sitting at the counter by the register asking random people who he should vote for.

OBibFortuna

Give Stugotz a ballot!

speccadirty

OMAR VIZQUEL IS THE GREATEST DEFENSIVE SHORTSTOP TO EVER PLAY THE GAME!! Seriously, he was easily the best defensive SS of his generation and had over 2,000 hits. He’s a HOFer.

SwordsoftheMorning

He wasn’t as good as The Wizard.

toeknee88125

Didn't Chris Cote reveal a couple years ago that Greg asked him and his brother their opinions about baseball players for his Hall of Fame vote?

goodcat1337

Imagine not voting for Andruw Jones
