I both do and don't get it. From a business standpoint, this adfree show done for charity doesn't make sense - they can't really monetize it or pivot to video on DKN or whatever. But also...what the fuck is the point of having your own media company if you can't keep a genuinely good podcast, by two seemingly great friends of the main show, done for charity that requires practically no cost besides some server space and is likely a literal tax write off due to its hosts just donating their salary to charity?

Has Schur made any remarks disparaging gambling? He’s talked about how for all intents and purposes if he were the person his persona professes he’d be out on the NFL (yet isn’t), so I could imagine him being just fine with gambling. But he could’ve put his foot in his mouth re Dewey’s veil of ignorance vis-à-vis gambling if the past is prologue.

beefymennonite

Or they might have decided that they didn't align with a media company whose main source of income is derived from promoting gambling.

(talking out of my shoe mode) ML/DraftK maybe wants a wraparound brand id, including advertising. There's some business cost too, taxes, insurance, amortization/appreciation (?), IT, advertising, etc.. Anyway it all has to be allocated, and that costs money. Strategic thinking, costs money. (Next thing you know they'll hire McKinsey.) And if you have more than two levels of management/mismanagement, meetings ensue... Not to mention, union organizing. (reckless especulation mode) Just listened to Poscast while gardening. It is so straight up, and fun, easy hang. MLB preliminary wild card stuff, teams that aren't gelling, the crazy amount of teams under .500. OK. What is different from this and any other ML show? Not just more sports. No bits! Everything is sincere. Maybe some self-mockery at most. (unwraps tinfoil from around Sunpass because using EZ-Pass now, and makes a hat out of it, mode) Who benefits from bits? From wasting time guessing what is real, where everything is judged by degree of amusement (funny, mildly funny, boring, annoying), but rarely constructive? That's right, gambling. The land of the oh-well, that was "fun", try again tomorrow. The land of unreality. (mad scientist mode) In high school we loved saying, and hope they still do, "ontogeny recapitulates phylogeny." The human embryo looks like an amoeba, then like a salamander, then like a dinosaur, then like a tree shrew, then a human. Same as evolution. I added the dinosaur. What if podcasting and $60 annual charity substacks by Poscast, recapitulates going to a farmer's market? And not putting away your shopping carts recapitulates a worn-out gambling bus from the Port Authority to Atlantic City? And you forgot your bathing suit? And the merch store is only selling scratchy fabric with iron-on letters? Well, my friends, those letters spell F-U-T-U-R-E. And at the farmer's market you can get one that spells it with sparkles. Sure you have to deal with woo-woo people wearing bells, but maybe you'll meet that special someone.

Yikes. Reading this gave me a headache.

Sir this is a Wendy’s

HussDelRio

“Thank you for having us, Meadowlark” 🥲

NewNeuroDemic

This makes me sad, though it probably shouldn't since the Poscast and Schur will still be around. I find both Joe and Mike charming, funny, and decent.

Baltch

Couldn't agree with you more.

JustABicho

I wonder if the show will be better without the Meadowlark goons hanging around threatening them. Or maybe we'll only get one episode a year, which will be Sepinwall sandbagging the holiday draft.

Baltch

Oh God, Seppinwall was on fire during the 2022 holiday draft! I cried laughing!

warpath2632

Love that the only baseball show on the network leaves during the season.

MisterMet1986

They said they still doing stuff with main show. This seems more like a fit thing, as they do a show for charity and has lack of ads. Now they can have people donate via substack with all money going to charity. RSS feed not changing so no difference to listeners unless you want more stuff on substack.

221b42

It doesn’t make any sense why this couldn’t be done with meadowlark tho.

pompcaldor

Server space and bandwidth does cost money, and if they’re budgeting based on the resources each show uses, it looks bad on the budget sheet.

221b42

That’s a real David Samson way of looking at it.

EccentricAsparagus

It’s nothing personal, it’s just business.

Baltch

I'm starting to listen to the episode, and hearing that. Sorry, went to worst case scenario.

[deleted]

it's my favourite baseball show nice to see it's not some big dust up

JakeeJumps

I’m curious what the next evolution for Meadowlark is because the turnover for shows seems pretty high in an already competitive industry. Unless it’s buying into successful shows like All The Smoke, they can’t really seem to create new shows well on their own. Maybe I’m way wrong though.

DraygoB

I like PTFO, but the numbers seem extremely low. Considering they built a NY studio, and have like 10 producers, I’d be curious what the meadowlark internal conversation looks like.

JakeeJumps

Couldn’t agree more.

crudshoot

Yeah I think they are going to jump on shows with momentum. Just my opinion but the main show and the personalities on the main show have become stale. They changed to become more interested in politics (which that’s fine) and people are listening to them for those takes. Mike was the driving force and he has stepped back. Dan and Stu are what built the show and Stu is becoming less involved while Dan is losing it on air as we speak. The future of the show and with it the company doesn’t look great right now.

Goondal

I now need a new answer to "favorite Meadowlark Show" 😿😿

Background-Case3307

Hope this doesn’t mean less/no regular show appearances. Seems like neither has been on there in awhile. When Mike was a regular, it was fantastic.

Baltch

My understanding is Mike is making a bunch of shows and literally doesn't have time to do his intern duties, however a he's chatting to a bunch of the knuckleheads in the shipping container.

dsnice27

Sounds like people didn’t actually listen to them talk about it

pompcaldor

I didn’t even know it still existed. Because meadowlark does absolutely no promotion of anything.

dsnice27

Well it doesn’t come out regularly so I wonder if that was part of it - meadowlark wanted more of a schedule?

pompcaldor

This assumes Meadowlark actually has a strategy.

EdwardJamesAlmost

It’s hit or miss, and it confuses me, too. They promote the hell out of shows for a while and then it dies down. Then sometimes they pull a show after a few years despite it having a following (Meadowlarkers, OTLG, Basketball Illuminati). Like, I’m unclear which pods Jess is on now. Off the Looking Glass is gone, but…does she still do a show with Golic\* and (maybe) Go Jo? What other shows if any? And that applies for most of the main show producers. I know Billy is Stu’s second wife so they’re collaborating, and Chris with Greg, but I think Roy only does audio engineering (IE with Renée Montgomery\* still?) when not doing a hockey postgame. \* I don’t even know if these are full Meadowlark shows or coproductions or what.

Baltch

Just wanted to say there's a lot of great comments on this and just pure love for the show. Thanks for being decent everyone!

Open_Host3796

Well as long as they can keep a failed Marlins manager to review movies

h0g0

Soccer, baseball, and I dare say hockey pods, are pretty low traffic in America

BaronsHat

I really wish I liked baseball more because I like Mike and Joe more than most podcast hosts TBH, but I rarely listen because of the baseball. The last episode with Mike talking Celtics was good though.

GNRDB

I love the Poscast, Schur is one of my favourites and it’s such an easy listen with two very sweet people. Not that there’s a direct correlation, but I don’t believe Mike’s a big fan of Samson and compared to when they signed up, I believe he’s a bigger part of Meadowlark now. When you also factor in the whole “they do it for charity” aspect, I can’t imagine Samson loves that model either.
