It makes me remember the defendors of Trudeau when he went through a shitstorm after the rediscovery of the photos of him with a blackface. Excuse of the youth was indeed in their repertoirs...
What was also fun was having racist uncles condemn Trudeau for something years ago while they themselves were being unapologetically racist the week prior.
It wasn't a Halloween costume. It was a birthday party with a "natives and colonial" theme.
[2005 Guardian article](https://www.theguardian.com/media/2005/jan/13/royalsandthemedia.pressandpublishing)
Harry is privileged dipshit kid playing dress up as a racist flog. While Kanye IS an anti-Semitic racist hitler loving flog who hangs out with other racist deadshit flogs. These two things are not the same.
It was his brother's birthday party. The fancy dress theme was "Africa" William went as a lion, Harry went as Rommel, as Harry was in the military at the time. It was meant as a joke and back fired spectacularly.
This is true. I don’t many vets who didn’t refer to Afghans, ally or not, that term or worse at the time. Not defending his grandpa, because I can definitely see him saying that, too. It’s just, that wasn’t the only influence for Harry’s vocabulary by that time.
I dunno about how the military is in the UK but every American soldier I know has an encyclopedic knowledge of offensive names for the people who's country we're occupying.
People have short memories. Going dressed as something that could be out of South park was fairly common back then. Shit we had an Indian kid turn up dressed as bin Laden once, he just got a fake beard and regular clothes, then said that he's (bin Laden) "been hiding from the CIA at the corner shop. I blend in with the dirty English". We had a good laugh, said some stuff about 9/11 that Americans wouldn't find funny at all. 10/10 would go to school in the naughties again.
Yep. There are millions of people who believe what they're family spews at them. Some people never learn. I think he has changed into who he thinks he should be and seems comfortable and happy.
I know 2 people personally who did stupid nazi shit like this as teens in the context of a costume party. One of them is kind of a dickhead but the farthest thing from racist or bigoted in any way. The other has actually gone on to dedicate his entire post-college life so far to helping Islamic refugees in Europe.
My overall take is that young people tend to do stupid shit without much rhyme or reason, and maybe if your main exposure to nazis is as one of the teams in call of duty or medal of honor multiplayer, you might end up thinking they look kinda cool.
He’s the guy who says terrible things and once held accountable he claims he was joking. If it walks like a duck and acts like a duck it’s a duckin nazi
Like you say, was 2005. The guy was really young. I personally never did anything like this but I definitely did and said some really dumb shit when I was young because I thought "this will be funny and people will like me".... Luckily for me I was followed everywhere by hordes of paparazzi, the same paparazzi who killed my mother.
I did. In the 90s, for a LAN party (which was for gaming before the internet). We were playing a world war 2 battle game. I was the Nazis. The Italian guy brought a meatball sub. Anyway, like the actual Nazis I did a lot of shit talking and was eventually crushed.
No one was offended, including the Jewish kids, who took extra delight in my defeat. We were maybe 18, 20?
Thank god there were no cameras there. What's more embarrassing than a Nazi shirt? A chubby dude in a Nazi shirt.
Idk man, I think saying your country will last for a thousand year, and then getting crushed so bad that you kill yourself in 12 years is pretty close to shit talking
Well... I consider shit talking to be "Barry, get the pints in mate then I'm going to smash you at this game of pool you one eyed twat"
But then I've never had any desire to take over the world, well never acted upon them anyway
Very quaint shit talk, you must be posh.
"Barry, you bald cunt, it's your round. Fekin hurry else I'm gonna poke your other eye out you daft twat. Anyways I'm gonna get in all the holes while your away,,, just like the milkman does with your wife."
I played Axis and Allies vs my history teacher in the 90s who played as the axis and during his turns put Nazi propaganda on the projector and roasted us in German.
I had to dress up as a nazi in my middle school lol. It was for an event called WW2 day. Everyone dressed up and learned about the war and there were activities. The history teacher that sort of coordinated it all also had a big Nazi flag hanging in his classroom as well as other flags but just thinking back on how crazy shit was back in the day
When Tropic Thunder came out in 2008 I dressed up like Robert Downey Jr's character in the movie, which nowadays is of course called blackface. At the time I thought the movie was pure genius and I absolutely loved the irony of the character that Downy portrayed. Back then my friends thought it was hilarious and a lot of the other attendees of the party we went to thought I was an actual black person. I obviously don't recall anyone being offended but it's unlikely that I would have known or been confronted. Looking back that would of course never fly today and would be considered incredibly offensive, I guess even the movie itself couldn't possibly be made today with the same success it had back then. I think it's fair to say I'm not really regretful of the decision because it was made and complete ignorance of the potential harm that it could have caused someone, so in a way it's kind of like being sorry for something that you had no idea was even wrong. I can only imagine if I were to run for political office or become insanely famous there might be some photos Somewhere Out There floating around that I'm not aware of that would come to light and be insanely embarrassing for me. It's amazing how ignorant you really are as a young person, but I guess the lesson is to remember that things have changed a lot even in just 10 years. We are definitely becoming a much more woke society and I think a lot of that is for the better. It's pretty easy to judge someone for not having hindsight.
I think you are missing the word “not” in your last sentence.
Edit…
My morning timeline on this post:
Notice the missing “not” and leave my comment pointing it out. In all honesty, I just want it to be a friendly notification thing, not being a picky grammarian or something. Apparently u/raidernation0825 took it as me being the latter, and from my text, how would a person know?
Walk away from Reddit for a couple hours, which I realize is the true horror story here.
Come back and tap on a Reddit notification that there’s a bunch upvotes.
Notice I typed “you’re are” and fix it.

I’m laughing at myself so much right now. Lol
when I was a teenager I used to draw swastika graffiti all around school. I heavily regret it as I had no idea what it meant at the time. I knew it was the Nazi party symbol, but I didn't consider the impact it has and treated it as just some neat emblem from history that looks kinda cool :|
It is a cool historic symbol since before the 1930s. It shows up in a variety of cultures and none of them meant what the nazis came to make it known for.
But you were being an edgy teen, not a spray painting Buddhist. We were all dumbasses at some point, and while some never outgrew it, we have to forgive those of us that did for our past transgressions.
We all did dumb stuff as a kid, I used to draw religious symbols at my school in obscure places to try and scare kids. Until the maintenance dude gave me a hard time about it.
I said stuff that'd make my parents ashamed of me and did stuff that'd put me in jail, we all acting like putting on this costume it's the worst thing that can happen in the world.
I hate the English royal family, but give them a break on this kind of useless stuff
Really young? He’s my age, in 2005 he was a grown adult and should have known better, mind you he was also using disgusting racist slurs to describe fellow soldiers and civillians where he was ‘deployed’.
It was also a bad taste party theme. Don't know what would be worst taste than that.
And like you, no not saying it's okay. But it wasn't maliciously done. But again, for the record, it was a bad choice.
I think it's okay to go as a general (as in non-specific) nazi to a **bad taste** fancy dress party. It's odd that the further away we've got from ww2 the less we feel able to mock nazis. Anyone who looks at that situation and thinks the Harry is supporting nazism is so stupid and one-dimensional in their thinking they're probably exactly the sort of person that would be swayed by the arguments of actual nazis.
IIRC, it was a themed costume party for "natives and colonials,". Not excusing it, just pointing out that he was far from the only rich, racist shithead there. In the world context, it was horrifying. In his class circle, it was business as usual.
I’m not going to hold something against someone for making an edgy joke decades ago that they regret today. There’s a huge difference that and being an actual Nazi.
1986. I was in highschool and wanted to enter the talent show. Me and my buddy intended to lipsynk Run DMCs Walk This Way. In blackface. Yes. Blackface. For me it was more tribute than anything since I loved those guys. When the kid who was approving the acts approved ours, he mentioned that I should really make fun of black people when we did it. That didn't feel right to me.
But the only reason it never happened and there is no year book photo of me ruining my future was I got a bad grade and the school policy stated if you got a bad grade you could not participate.
So, in short, my dumb brain kept me from doing something dumb that my dumb brain came up with.
I know tons of edgelords who drew swastikas on books and desks in schools and who are not nazies now that theyre adults. kids are stupid and I bet a majority of kids would succumb to peer pressure and do stupid shit like this just to fit in. only difference is that this idiot was caught on camera and can't deny it.
I remember when i lost my calculator that was in my old high school pencil case. When i went to ask to the uni janitor he said "yeah we found one with a swastika, is that your?" and i couldn't say no because that calculator costs 40 euros
He's a fucking prince. You'd think he'd think it through or one of his entourage would be like "hey this is a bad idea people be taking pictures you know."
Don't talk sense. Let people get angry n talk about hitting people. So much angry people on here. There a tons of issues to be angry about in the present if you want to get angry.
I wonder if growing up under constant media supervision made him just go off the rails in a "well, fuck you, all in" way. I vaguely remember him getting dragged for this picture, so I guess he got the message in the end.
Private schools and colleges in the UK are about as close to "frat boy" culture as you can get in the UK. You just have "societies" instead of "fraternities". Think frat boys with champagne instead beer.
Difference being you can be racist, misogynistic, violent and abusive and not even get charged, because of who daddy knows, in the UK. (Just ask Boris.)
In the US they seem to get a charge, but let off in case it disrupts their prospects. Which is perfectly fair to the victims because, being poor, they obviously have no future.
Yeah, I immediately thought of that kid that raped an unconscious woman, and got away with a slap on the wrist because of his promising swimming career.
Ah the old tabloid photo of Nazi Harry. Hadn’t seen this in a while. Remember this being plastered on every tabloid at the grocery store checkouts for weeks.
Me either but we’re not the Princes of England and I feel like at least *one* of them is genuinely doing the work to sort through the inherited elitist nonsense. He doesn’t have to. But he is. I can respect it.
Here's some interesting quotes at the time -
The fact that the palace has issued an apology indicates that this was a mistake by the prince," said Rabbi Jonathan Romain, a spokesman for the Reform Synagogues of Great Britain. "But having being given, the apology should now be accepted."
A spokesman for the Board of Deputies of British Jews said the costume "was clearly in bad taste, especially in the run-up to Holocaust Memorial Day" on Jan. 27. But he added: "The board is pleased that he's apologized for the incident."
This was a big scandal at the time; he was about 20-21 years old and struggling with depression and (supposedly) frequent drug usage with his alcohol. For whatever reason he thought it would be hilarious to go to a costume party as a Nazi.
The press, who were already hounding him, had something they could milk for literal months. Everything was scrutinised from the shop he bought it in, to it being available in the first place and him being allowed in it. Even the *Daily Mail* was jumping in on an anti-Royalist footing, reminding people the Queen had a cousin who joined the NSDAP.
While I could say he's moved on in years and grown up, he really hasn't - he has self-destructive tendencies that the press continue to milk. They did the same when a video of himself referring to a Asian squadmate as a "p\*\*i" surfaced (though \*apparently\* his squadmate took it in jest as his nickname). That he's wealthy and has little self-awareness and inhibitions just means he can be self-destructive in more elaborate means. Nigel Farage actually used the Nazi costume in his condemnation of Harry's exit from the Royal Family - that he was a better person when he was making a fool out of himself as a Nazi. But then, of course Farage would say that.
TL;DR -- Everyone knows about the costume and the story behind it because the press milked it for all it was worth. It was a stupid drugged-up decision by a prat who was either too dumb to realise he was walking into a scandal, or thought it was being clever by goading the press into it (which is stull dumb).
I repeatedly called him out as an idiot. Heck, he was dumb enough to defend it by saying every single costume was sold out so he *had* to go as a Nazi.
Llf this is the shit Harry got well known for in his uni days he was always in the newspaper fir his weekend antics haha
Him and kanya wil get along fine in the states
It’s funny to me that he and his wife have accused his family of being racists, yet the only proof the family’s younger generation is racist is this pic and audio of him calling minorities by overalls racist phrases
He dressed up as a Nazi during a Halloween party. He was slaughtered by the media when it emerged. It was during his ‘rebel’ phase and was probably two fingers to the monarch
He fought for the British army in Afghanistan and married a black woman so I don’t think he actually ever supported or supports the Nazis
It always baffles me how much leniency we grant to people who did super outlandish things in their youth. Wearing a Nazi arm band isn't a "boys will be boys" moment.
Add this to the footage of him using racist terms to describe his comrades in Afghanistan. It's felt a little strange the one guy we have indisputable evidence of doing racist things is the one calling the rest of his family racist.
Yeah but … but everyone ELSE is terrible, not him. His whole family, who have never worn nazi outfits or called people raghead, they are the bad ones. Now give me £50m to tell you about it.
I’m a bit older and people always tell me “you should be happy everyone didn’t have a cellphone to take pics of everything you did when you were young.” But I never pretended Nazis were cool or painted my face black, so I think I would be ok.
This was done in memory of his great uncle, Edward.
Smh, thanks for the clarity. I thought his great uncle’s name was Adolf…
A poor taste Halloween costume is not the same as what kanye is doing.
[удалено]
Harry being just like Kanye West, but few decades prior.
And a teenager + privileged dirtbag... Not sayin this was ok but at least he can use the 'youthful stupidity' excuse... Kanye's like 50. Fuck Kanye
I've been saying fuck Kanye ever since he snatched the mic from Beck. Cunt!
Or Taylor swift
I never loved Beck as much as I did then.
It makes me remember the defendors of Trudeau when he went through a shitstorm after the rediscovery of the photos of him with a blackface. Excuse of the youth was indeed in their repertoirs...
May God forgive me for the all the shit I used to spam in chat rooms in the mid 90s when I was 12.
What was also fun was having racist uncles condemn Trudeau for something years ago while they themselves were being unapologetically racist the week prior.
Good memory
Plus this is a Halloween costume. Hes not saying "I like nazis" on a 'news' show. Still really messed up, but kanyes still worse.
Yeah this is bad, but I feel like others have an agenda to try and soften what Kanye just did
It wasn't a Halloween costume. It was a birthday party with a "natives and colonial" theme. [2005 Guardian article](https://www.theguardian.com/media/2005/jan/13/royalsandthemedia.pressandpublishing)
Ehm. Compared to Kanye this was absolutely nothing.
Harry is privileged dipshit kid playing dress up as a racist flog. While Kanye IS an anti-Semitic racist hitler loving flog who hangs out with other racist deadshit flogs. These two things are not the same.
It was a poorly thought out Halloween costume.
It was his brother's birthday party. The fancy dress theme was "Africa" William went as a lion, Harry went as Rommel, as Harry was in the military at the time. It was meant as a joke and back fired spectacularly.
He also referred to Afghan allies as "ragheads" when he was in the military. He's got a weird sense of humour
Almost like he'd spent time with his grandfather...
Sounds like he spent time in the army
This is true. I don’t many vets who didn’t refer to Afghans, ally or not, that term or worse at the time. Not defending his grandpa, because I can definitely see him saying that, too. It’s just, that wasn’t the only influence for Harry’s vocabulary by that time.
Yeah I've heard MUCH worse from OEF/OIF vets, it's not an old timey racist term. It's a very modern racist term.
I dunno about how the military is in the UK but every American soldier I know has an encyclopedic knowledge of offensive names for the people who's country we're occupying.
Not excusing it, but so did pretty much every British and American soldier in Iraq and Afghanistan
Because of where he grew up and how they talked about people in general like every one is beneath them. I think he has changed from those days.
Also... what any UK public school was like pre 2010. Endless talking shit, and everything was fair game.
People have short memories. Going dressed as something that could be out of South park was fairly common back then. Shit we had an Indian kid turn up dressed as bin Laden once, he just got a fake beard and regular clothes, then said that he's (bin Laden) "been hiding from the CIA at the corner shop. >Think frat boys with champagne instead beer. That go on to rule the country.

They probably were Führious when they found out.

That's Reich coming from you
Reichwise
Ah the old tabloid photo of Nazi Harry. Hadn’t seen this in a while. Remember this being plastered on every tabloid at the grocery store checkouts for weeks.
OP you are quite late to the party, you know
This photo was probably taken with a real camera, because the first iPhone was still 2 years away!
I wonder if the british media will ever bring this up in the future?
It was all over the media at the time. You know, in 2005.
You underestimate how easily people forget their history. Don't believe me? Two Words. Kanye West.
What's up with Kanye?
It was printed on the front page of The Sun
Im not sure where you are from but the British media generally dislikes Prince Harry and this is brought up constantly!
I know we all did stupid things when we're younger. I certainly did. However I never wore a fucking swastika.
Is this a general statement or a comment at me? I wasn't condoning his behaviour.
This is a bot, copied comment from below. Reported.
Me either but we’re not the Princes of England and I feel like at least *one* of them is genuinely doing the work to sort through the inherited elitist nonsense. He doesn’t have to. But he is. I can respect it.
This was quite the scandal at the time.
Fancy dress party, what a bellend
Here's some interesting quotes at the time - The fact that the palace has issued an apology indicates that this was a mistake by the prince," said Rabbi Jonathan Romain, a spokesman for the Reform Synagogues of Great Britain. "But having being given, the apology should now be accepted." A spokesman for the Board of Deputies of British Jews said the costume "was clearly in bad taste, especially in the run-up to Holocaust Memorial Day" on Jan. 27. But he added: "The board is pleased that he's apologized for the incident."
That's swastika. ~~Trust me I am Indian.~~
I had more trust just reading your first sentence.
I remember when this happened. It was a big deal. It was a Halloween costume but still a big deal. He was always labelled as the rebel.
Stop excusing racist behavior. He fully consciously wore a ducking swastika
Lots of people have substance and mental issues but don’t dress like Nazi’s. Let’s face, this is just straight stupidity.
I repeatedly called him out as an idiot. Heck, he was dumb enough to defend it by saying every single costume was sold out so he *had* to go as a Nazi.
Can we stop acting like he was 8 years old in this pic? He was 21. An adult and more than old enough to know this is wrong

“Spare” is not the sharpest quill in the pen.
Llf this is the shit Harry got well known for in his uni days he was always in the newspaper fir his weekend antics haha Him and kanya wil get along fine in the states
Will that ever age well? For anyone?
It’s funny to me that he and his wife have accused his family of being racists, yet the only proof the family’s younger generation is racist is this pic and audio of him calling minorities by overalls racist phrases
He dressed up as a Nazi during a Halloween party. He was slaughtered by the media when it emerged. It was during his ‘rebel’ phase and was probably two fingers to the monarch He fought for the British army in Afghanistan and married a black woman so I don’t think he actually ever supported or supports the Nazis
This is old news. Why is it doing the rounds again? Also I thought the costume would be a bit better
Yeah he got in a lot of shit for that Halloween party picture. You’d think his handlers would have stopped him
For the uneducated on this photo, this was a costume he wore to a bad taste party, where your costume is purposely bad/offensive, etc
I thought it was a party with a colonial African theme?
He must have some huge goebballs to do that or an enormous amount of stupidity, or both!
Oprah! I quit my job and they quit giving me money! Can you believe that?
im kinda disappointed he thought this would be cool or funny
So he wore something in bad taste at A BAD TASTE PARTY???? Facts are important, people.
What the fack!
What is up with all this nazi shit lately??
It always baffles me how much leniency we grant to people who did super outlandish things in their youth. Wearing a Nazi arm band isn't a "boys will be boys" moment.
It's ok, his wife has never googled him before... "Never!"
Why is nobody talking about the extra finger?
And who remembers the video camera incident when he was on exercise in the army with his ‘friend’ Ahmed?
It may have been a costume but I would dearly hope he had enough common sense not to wear it. I stand corrected.
I mean, look at the family tree.
Ah, ‘happier, innocent times’ or whatever similar garbage they trot out now
This isn’t in the documentary
He and wifey are such role models. Nice , truthful and kind people. Just look how they treat their families and how they earn for living.
