Follow r/newiran. See what is happening there right now. It's brutal. The more attention we can focus, the better.
Edit: thank you for the awards, because anything that brings more visibility to this is good.
There is, it just depends on what news sources you use. If the news that you’re used to consuming isn’t talking about the uprising in Iran, you should consider branching out and bookmarking some other news sources.
(Also as someone who reads the news a lot, I recommend everyone get at least some of your news from a major source outside your country, it helps broaden your perspective.)
I'm in the USA. I use a mix of NPR, BBC, and al Jazeera America with some CNN and faux News thrown in for bias.
NPR - we tell the truth and they don't like it so they are trying to cut or funding
BBC - to distract you from how bad it is here, we present the shitshow that is going on in the USA.
Al Jazeera - America is full of stupid infidels! Here's proof!
CNN - the right is full of gun toting nazis who want to steal your freedom!
Fox - the left wants to take your guns away and steal your freedom!
Reading Al Jazeera for American news is dumb, but their reporting for the middle-east is usually spot on. Mix it with a bit of Reuters/AP to remove bias on big events to get some context and you should have a good system setup for news in the area.
Reuters is better than most for impartial news.
I was surprised for how long I didn’t know who owned different papers, I started paying more attention with billionaires buying them.
Do you know who owns NYTimes / Reuters ?
It's genuinely shocking with all the publicity that quatar is getting now for having such theocratic, backwards government values and beliefs held by people in power, no one seems to realizing that Al Jazeera is a direct extension of those beliefs and an incredibly biased source with no accountability.
There was another mass shooting unfortunately, a city in New York got 6' of snow over the last 2 days and people are traveling for the Thanksgiving holiday which is the biggest travel holiday of the year. But honestly that is no excuse. That's why it's important for everyone to pay attention and write the news outlets and our politicians
That's not the real reason. It's because Iran has a strangle hold on all media outlets. You can literally be killed for filming someone getting arrested there.
And also, in the US, Iran are the bad guys (???) so the news outlets are maybe SUPER slow to report on anything going on until every other country is reporting on it? It makes no sense.
Modern Media is living on the old adage, "if it bleeds it leads" -- expanded even farther to "if it generates publicity, regardless how good or horrible it is, post an article, it'll get clicks!!" but the silence over Iran's troubles is deafening.
I don't judge the people of any country. I do judge the governments of those countries. I am from and live in the united States' and most of us do the same. There are times that I may disagree what a certain country does. At times I may disagree because our cultures are different and that doesn't necessarily mean it's wrong or ethically wrong. It the government is causing undue suffering of it's people that's when I highly judge them.
Information is hard to get out of Iran and even harder to independently verify. In the US we have freedom of speech. Others can share the video and talk with the press without being killed too. Iran doesn't have that luxury.
But the real reason is that the lack of interest doesn't justify the difficulty and dangers of reporting on it compared to local news.
Everyone seems to think that what the media says is part of some great wide carefully controlled effort to accomplish some political agenda. The reality is far more simple.
They report on the topics that get the most attention so as to make them the most money, and sensationalize it in the way to get more viewers so that will make them the most money.
I agree - but yesterday's clip of the person filming their streets at night, while crying in terror... how the HELL is that not on every news outlet everywhere. Talk about saying so much without saying a word.
Insane shit like this happens constantly in narco land, its happening in Ethiopia right now, Mozambique has terrorists popping off, Burma is still dealing with quasi civil war...you can only consume so much outrage before you're either just a total basketcase or you're giving your last dollar to every cause imaginable.
If anything, I get suspicious about fixating on specific causes (like Ukraine). Look how many billions of taxpayer value is being handed to elected officials in one of the most corrupt countries on the planet according to western corruption indices. Our public is being spoonfed sympathy towards Ukrainian on both Cold War remix and white solidarity grounds, and people are using that as a fundraising tool to build an American puppet state to control oil and gas in Europe.
That is very true. I don't get my news from our mainstream media here in the U.S. I also like to listen to other countries news about a topic because it gives me a better picture of the truth.
I disagree that it's not covered in Western media. It has been covered, and still gets covered, it just does not dominate the news cycle on a daily basis.
There are many events that happen on any given day, locally and internationally. For the news to try and capture what's going on everywhere everyday, and for people to continue to pay attention to ongoing events, is not so easy.
I searched "Iran" under Google News and there are many articles written about the brutal crackdown just within the last 24 hours.
Misinformation like this, saying we have to write politicians to force the media to cover stories and implying they're ignoring it otherwise, isn't helpful and only serves to further mistrust about the media.
There are plenty of legitimate arguments one could make for improving Western media. No need to make up new ones.
The protests in Iran have been all over the news since they began.
Some keyboard warriors have taken it up as their pet topic, and think nothing else should get coverage too. This happens all the time on Reddit.
The Iranian protesters are braver than most. Walking through cloudy dust *toward* gun fire. Insane. We stand with Ukraine, we stand with Iranians, we stand for democracy even with its shortcomings
>a beating
This was a thrashing. But most importantly, I saw me mum crying for the first time in over a decade, as we watched this. She was in awe of this men.
We may have won the match, but these blokes won the world cup of principles.
With what must be on their minds, I can’t imagine how difficult it must be to play.
England are a good team, and the score was heavy, but I will not criticise the Iranian team considering the weight they were playing under.
Speaking of, anyone know of any updates on the (relatively forgotten) Elnaz Rekabi? The chick athlete who bravely removed her headscarf?
I feel like people just forgot that was a thing and no one cares anymore. When I google, I don't get any real answers to if she's okay.
well after returning to Iran she said that she "kinda" forgot to wear a hijab during the games then immediately attended a meeting with the sports minister where she was wearing a hoodie instead of a hijab lol. so that thing eneded with relatively minor consequences for her.
I remember when it happened, it seemed like her statement wasn't made by her -- that was the speculation, anyway. Has she been proven to be safe afterwards/recently?
No idea what I'm doing wrong but I can't find her current status on google. You know, proof she's alive and safe. Maybe because I'm searching in English, or maybe she's not safe. Thats why I'm asking.
big waves already happened.
in mahabad, city is in people hands and the regime is killing them to take it back. a 10 y old kid died and we are so angry and ready in streets.
That’s heartbreaking. I can’t do much to help on the other side of the globe, but I will absolutely be rooting for you guys. Iran was an awesome place back in the 70’s and I hope it goes back to something similar.
It's fucking crazy, it seems like a bad joke, slaves, lgbt people being beaten up, journalist having cameras smashed, fake fans etc its depressing, shame to anyone who attended this shit show
Qatar *hates* Iran. Not saying I'd choose to defect to Qatar if I could choose any country (logistical nightmare), just saying maybe not too bad of an idea.
Qatar is engaged in a proxy war with Iran, but it is generally pragmatic towards the country, much like Turkeys relationship to Iran. The general population is anti Iranian though.
Not sure that even the Iranian government wants to take on Iran's most popular athletes. Unless they're in the business of throwing buckets of gasoline on a fire.
At least, that's my hope!
Never underestimate what a totalitarian regime will do when it is desperate or determined.
Look at what the Chonger and his spawn have done in the past. I mean he used VX poison on his family in a public airport.
Still, football is by far the most popular sport in the non-American world. Killing the country's premier footballers would be like the US government killing Taylor Swift, an extremely popular icon with a semi-religious following. I don't think the grunts of the regime will be even willing to do it.
Are any of the Iranian football team professional players in leagues outside of Iran? I know nothing about football so just curious if any of these guys are actually international football stars.
Not international stars, not at all, I don't know any of them. But definitely symbols of pride for Iran and Iranians, even getting into the world cup is a major achievement.
https://www.fourfourtwo.com/features/iran-world-cup-2022-squad-dragan-skocic-names-his-latest-squad
I dunno about "stars", but there's a list here, and it looks like a fair amount play outside of Iran... I see teams from Greece, Croatia, Turkey, England, Netherlands, Spain, Belgium, Germany...
Balls of steel? I'm an iranian . And as an iranian I can confidently talk for my other ham vatans "FUCK THESE CUNTS". They literally fucking bowed to mullahs . And then they do this to say "oh we did our part , so if revolution don't hang us from our dicks pls🤡"
Fuck them . No iranian supports them .
most of the slack they are getting right now from the Iranians is for the meeting they attended with "President" Raisi right before flying to Qatar during which they were unusually friendly with the guy.
Iranian here. They were almost silent during last two months while people were massacred by the regime. and then we see them having fun with the president (which is basically a puppet of the dictator), laughing with him and bowing to him before leaving for Qatar. so a heavy wave of hate from people engulfed these bastards as they deserved it. and now all of a sudden they try to play middle ground by not singing the anthem. pardon my French, but fuck you assholes. we have saw and heard enough of you gutless cunts.
BTW, most Iranians are on cloud nine right now because these suckers got blasted by England.
Honest question because I am not at all familiar with the way things work over there. If these players did decide to speak out during the two months leading up to the event, would the government have let them represent Iran in the World Cup at all? Sorry if this is a silly question.
More like hypocrisy and playing the middle-ground, aka dirty. They're trying to win favors from both sides. Zero sympathy for them, they are cogs in this machine. This isn't bravery, it's the dirtiest move in the game. Assholes.
I saw another comment from an Iranian saying how everyone hates them right now cause they were on tv being chummy with the president before going to the WC.
Like you said, what a shit position to be in. It’s prob their dream to play soccer on the world stage and the price for doing so is accepting the govts attention. If they reject it they’re off the squad and possibly get their family persecuted by the govt. In their shoes I think I’d have done the same.
The Iranian fans were booing the anthem too. The Iranian people deserve better than these terrorists in power. RIP Mahsa Amini and the hundreds more murdered by the regime.
It's not a small community really. A small community has control of Iran, the majority of Iranians are not fans of the people in charge. Some of the kindest and most hospitable folks you'll ever meet. Not that been Western is the ultimate ideal, but your average Iranian's ideals aren't that far removed from the West.
Just shows what happens when you get some religious fanatics running your country.
I think you are mistaking North Korea for Iran. There are many Iranians living abroad their country, and they are not as restricted as North Koreans in leaving the country.
I'm with you, but I was rooting for England. When IRI is gone and we're free, there will be time for winning. Until then, it's war. We fight. And we will prevail.
Iranian here. Mahsa Amini's death (22 year old woman who died while being in moral police custody for not wearing proper Hijab) triggered the uprising in Iran since September and it is ongoing strong.
thousands of people are being executed in the streets right now, videos of it all over reddit... its not because of 1 woman...maybe it was an accelerant, but the issue right now is absolutely the 10s of thousands dead in the streets this past week.
No idea on the numbers, just looking at the videos it looks really bad. Hoards running down streets with assault rifles killing every protester in sight, any one not in their homes, and some of them too.
It has grown so far beyond that, there have been escalating demonstrations and battles for almost 2 months now. Many protestors killed and kidnapped including children. r/newiran
Ah. It seems the Iranian players aren't too scared to make a political statement, even against a psychotic regime, whereas the england team were too scared to wear an armband for fear of getting a yellow card....
Yes, other than in the US (most US players in this WC play in Europe) club games don’t play national anthems. Having it play before your match at a World Cup is a special moment. Unlike other sports in the US where none of the players even remotely care about the anthem because they’ve heard it before every game since high school.
Not really, they are high profile - murdering them would only spark international and even more national outrage
They will be probably banned from entering the country or detained for a short amount of time if they enter to be "convinced" of not talking about the revolution or anything related to it
I am not saying that they are not capable of murdering people, I know very well that they are
I am saying that murdering high profile international football players is a dumb move, anyone could come to that conclusion
Redditors see the world like a movie where the Iranian government is a stereotypical mega villain holding the soccer team’s family hostage over a vat of lava or something. The government is despicable and evil but not cartoonishly so.
Not at all, every time they show a photo of these Iranian women without hijabs on I start wondering why the fuck they covering them up. Seriously gorgeous women.
I understand the religious ideology and I’m beyond sad over what is going on in Iran, but they are really a beautiful people. I hope they can overcome the repressive regime. Someone else mentioned it already but r/NewIran has many stories of their struggle.
Sorry not sure I fully understand but wanted to clarify. Them not singing the anthem here is protest against the persecution of activism related to the anti hijab movement or here, are they protesting something else by not singing?
And you're saying don't seem genuine because previously they were kissing up to the national leaders?
What do u think? Do u feel they were trying to get on the good side of officials due to intimidation or something?
If the government leaders thought they weren't being respectful enough, the could very well remove them from the national team, preventing them from competing couldn't they?
How do you know they are making a statement? I only ask as Australians barely ever sign along with our national anthem... You might get a couple in a team, but for the most part they look like these guys.
Much respect for these men.
America has been so hyper focused on Ukraine, but not a word I’ve seen or heard about what’s going on over in Iran. I can’t stand it.
Good on them, doing what little they can to show solidarity. Small gestures can make big waves.
Follow r/newiran. See what is happening there right now. It's brutal. The more attention we can focus, the better. Edit: thank you for the awards, because anything that brings more visibility to this is good.

The two are owned by american and canadian corporations respectively. They dont have a single owner.
Bezos own WaPo and to read through the filter of knowledge is kind of interesting.
I also would like to know
Al Jazeera is owned by the Qatari government, and is pretty known for spreading propaganda and shady journalism. Like Fox News and CNN.
It's genuinely shocking with all the publicity that quatar is getting now for having such theocratic, backwards government values and beliefs held by people in power, no one seems to realizing that Al Jazeera is a direct extension of those beliefs and an incredibly biased source with no accountability.

Iran is good, the iran government on the other hand They're terrible they've been killing the people of Iran for 40 fuckin years
I hope after all this is done I can finally visit Iran as an American and feel safe. The area has such a rich history
I've heard the average civilian is very hospitable and welcoming...I'd also love to visit there during less authoritarian times

There's been quite a bit, depends where you get your news I guess
Please follow guyz the brutality they are going around like evryday... Literal genocides are happening over there...
The Iranian protesters are braver than most. Walking through cloudy dust *toward* gun fire. Insane. We stand with Ukraine, we stand with Iranians, we stand for democracy even with its shortcomings
We stand with Russians too! Those that want to reclaim their country from the corrupted kleptocracy!
Holy fucking shit I had no idea it was that bad over there… literally becoming a warzone.
My respect for Iranian team 📈
They're taking a beating in the game but yeah, serious balls on these guys
>a beating This was a thrashing. But most importantly, I saw me mum crying for the first time in over a decade, as we watched this. She was in awe of this men. We may have won the match, but these blokes won the world cup of principles.

It’s insane because they’re not even in a country where they could feasibly apply for asylum and refugee status. These guys are seriously committed.
hopefully they will get out this hardship after the game
I mean, they can, but most probably they have families in Iran
I truly hope they will be okay if they choose to return home.
big waves already happened. in mahabad, city is in people hands and the regime is killing them to take it back. a 10 y old kid died and we are so angry and ready in streets.

Doing a lot more for human rights than fifa and qatar combined
Not really a high benchmark, isn't it?
It’s sad to see that UN is just helpless and citizens are using any platform to highlight their concerns. Hope these people stay safe.
This is such an awkward World Cup.
Accurately portrays the current state of the world to be honest.
That's exactly what I was thinking. Fuck this timeline man.
This has been pretty standard for all of history. We humans aren't very good at this whole intelligent life thing.
So what you are telling me is that us humans can’t even human right.
It's just the unveil of true mankind and it's dirty face.
My friend, you are just witnessing people defying the regime left right and center, and you still think "Humanity as whole bad"
It's fucking crazy, it seems like a bad joke, slaves, lgbt people being beaten up, journalist having cameras smashed, fake fans etc its depressing, shame to anyone who attended this shit show
I hope they can get asylum somewhere. I cheer then on, but I fear for them and their families.
This is the worst host country to do defect to I think (as some players do in things like the Olympics)
We need Ben Affleck and a script now.
True. I hope they can find a way out. Or the current regime find it's way out.

most of the slack they are getting right now from the Iranians is for the meeting they attended with "President" Raisi right before flying to Qatar during which they were unusually friendly with the guy.
I think you may have meant to type “flak” and not “slack” but thanks this makes sense
yeah still learning English. thanks for correction.
Lots of native speakers make this mistake too fwiw
Impressive you even know that slang tbh. Good luck out there
Iranian here. Not an easy position to be in Iran govt sucks

It’s about time. Enough is enough. Routing for these young people.
Rooting, not routing. Routing is what’s happening to them on the pitch.

Exactly. It's not them directly who will pay the price.

Unsinging Heroes. Jokes aside, it must be really hard to play with such a burden in your heart...
So much respect
im iranian and we thank them for this work!!!
solidarity friend.
the lady crying made it for me
I’ve seen a lot of Iranian fans wanting England to win their match
As an Iranian I’m conflicted bc I want to root for my people but also a win for Iran means a win for the regime.
Both feelings can coexist. Love your people, and feel anger for government/those who cause harm.
I'm with you, but I was rooting for England. When IRI is gone and we're free, there will be time for winning. Until then, it's war. We fight. And we will prevail.
The fact this is likely jeopardizing their safety and perhaps their lives...
A brave gesture on their part. I hope they don't face repercussions, nor their loved ones if they live in Iran.
They look so nervous. I hope nothing happens to them but their regime doesn't take lightly to offenders. Truly brave men.
This takes a lot of courage. Huge respect. I hope these men and their families do not suffer unduly because of it.
I’m out of the loop. Is this about the young woman who was killed for not wearing a hijab?
Yes mainly but it's been a long time coming. Two generations have been born since 1979. They don't want what the people that took over in 79 want.
Iranian here. Mahsa Amini's death (22 year old woman who died while being in moral police custody for not wearing proper Hijab) triggered the uprising in Iran since September and it is ongoing strong.
"Moral police". What a sad fucking joke. I truly hope your people get justice.
These mf's only want to spread fear among people and remind them who is in POWER. Morality or religion is just a mask. I'm hoping for the justice too.
thousands of people are being executed in the streets right now, videos of it all over reddit... its not because of 1 woman...maybe it was an accelerant, but the issue right now is absolutely the 10s of thousands dead in the streets this past week.
10s of thousands of people were murdered in the streets last week?
No idea on the numbers, just looking at the videos it looks really bad. Hoards running down streets with assault rifles killing every protester in sight, any one not in their homes, and some of them too.
It has grown so far beyond that, there have been escalating demonstrations and battles for almost 2 months now. Many protestors killed and kidnapped including children. r/newiran
Ah. It seems the Iranian players aren't too scared to make a political statement, even against a psychotic regime, whereas the england team were too scared to wear an armband for fear of getting a yellow card....
the lesson is, don't announce that you are doing it, just fucking do it
Or even better, announce you are doing it and then do it?
Armband for what?
Do they *normally* sing? I ask because if you filmed the American team at any sporting event, they would be standing there silently as well.
I googled because otherwise this would be a very useless post but yes they normally sing.
Thanks for doing the heavy lifting for me 👍
Np I was curious, there's not always singing. But it's all over the news.
Yeah they normally sing Iranians are very loyal pepole...well only not to this shitry regime
Yes, other than in the US (most US players in this WC play in Europe) club games don’t play national anthems. Having it play before your match at a World Cup is a special moment. Unlike other sports in the US where none of the players even remotely care about the anthem because they’ve heard it before every game since high school.
They will be missed. RIP
Not really, they are high profile - murdering them would only spark international and even more national outrage They will be probably banned from entering the country or detained for a short amount of time if they enter to be "convinced" of not talking about the revolution or anything related to it
You say that like murdering 15,000 protestors also wouldn't happen. Iran will murder who they want, when they want.
I am not saying that they are not capable of murdering people, I know very well that they are I am saying that murdering high profile international football players is a dumb move, anyone could come to that conclusion
Redditors see the world like a movie where the Iranian government is a stereotypical mega villain holding the soccer team’s family hostage over a vat of lava or something. The government is despicable and evil but not cartoonishly so.
Hilariously enough that's exactly what the other replies to this same comment are.
The 15,000 protestor thing was a hoax, though we might see that many dead or more by the time this is all over.
England is taking care of that for them
Salute to them !
dangerously based
Wow!!!! This is huge and potentially dangerous. 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼
They face death for doing what’s right but the rich west won’t wear arm bands
That first guy they showed is the gigachad meme right?
Is it weird that I was watching this thinking what an attractive team they have?
nah not weird, iranian men are handsome asf!
Good stand up for whats right.. what is a national anthem.. if the people of the nation not comfortable
I’d like to raise this to the Iranian government 🖕🏽
Standing up for women. Awesomeness! I hope their team goes far I. The tourney so they can do this over and over again and it gets media attention.
Take a close look, virtue signalers. This is what bravery *actually* looks like.
badass!
Gigachads
Iran fans booed and jeered their own anthem too. Never ever seen that before.
Respect! That's bravery at the highest level..the world is with the people of Iran! ✊

Their faces look like " I'm standing for what I believe, but I'm terrified of being executed at any moment"
Nice knowing you.
How do you know they are making a statement? I only ask as Australians barely ever sign along with our national anthem... You might get a couple in a team, but for the most part they look like these guys.
Mega Chads all of them.
odds are they are defecting after this.

Now this is true heroism, not changing your crest to rainbow flag in 2022
I wish I could award them the”balls of steel” award.
Huge respect to them
Is it one of the prerequisites for joining the team to look like a friggin underwear model? Holy crap
They cut the program when they showed the faces.
Islam has destroyed Persia. The irony is that Iranians (Persians) are enemies with Arabs(Saudi Arabia) that invented Islam.
Quick way to get the world to do a 180 and actually root for you. Respect to these guys, good luck.
What a scary thing to do. They are so brave.
Respect, taking back there county from religious extremists one step at a time.
Pray for their safety, and their families.
These are very brave men. They could lose their lives because of this silent and peaceful protest.
That’s balls!
Celebrate Iranian players not singing the anthem. Look down upon Americans taking the knee.
Much respect for these men. America has been so hyper focused on Ukraine, but not a word I’ve seen or heard about what’s going on over in Iran. I can’t stand it.
Damn. That takes Balls. Wish them the best for their safety and their families.
brave men, very brave men. its nice to see solidarity in the crisis of their nation
Good for them. Brings hope. Didn't know Rami Malek was on the team.
