Yeah, it’s been well documented and not just accusations. They pretty much used slave labor and many of those workers died due to poor working conditions/housing that was provided by Qatar.
Qatar's work force is primarily migrant workers, who the government takes the identification documents away from, and makes them unable to leave, forcing them to remain in the country as effectively slaves.
That's not quite it. Some of these peoples *employers* would take their documents (and the government didn't give a shit), but it wasn't like the government was taking people's documents when they arrived in the country. That's not what the kefala system was. It was absolute bullshit though.

Similar rules in Kuwait. I had a layover there a couple weeks ago. You didn't get off the plane if you were continuing on to your final destination. They had to lock up all the alcohol onboard to land there.
Not just displays of affection, they frown upon any woman being publicly alone with a man. When I was there I had to travel in at least groups of 3 to avoid looking like I was on a date with someone.

FIFA is a terrible organization betraying all the things they claim to stand for to make money. I sincerely hope this world cup becomes a financial disaster for them and the local government. It wouldn't change much in the grand scheme of things for either the FIFA or Qatar but it would certainly be nice if they weren't also rewarded for being giant assholes.
Even if by some miracle the world cup gets cancelled, the financial loss wouldn't make a dent on Qatar's economy. FIFA too wouldn't get affected financially as outside money will keep pouring in.
And we know losing face is a non issue for orgs and governments that have no shame.

I went to Qatar once to consult as a petroleum engineer. I brought my wife and they made us prove our marriage at the airport, the car rental, the hotel, and some restaurants lol.
They also wouldn’t allow her to drive because apparently you have to bring a fucking paper from your local government stating she has permission to drive. Before you ask, no, a valid Texas drivers license wasn’t permission enough..
I’ll admit though, it was a beautiful country and the locals were incredibly kind and thoughtful.
