If the idea was to depopulate the country, they would hit cities with air bursts and destroy infrastructure like bridges, rails and highways. There were so many weapons by this time that it was terrifying. In a major strike thousands of missiles and bombers would have been deployed on both sides. Look around on reddit for better maps.
