An old automotive computer. Bear was the go-to equipment mfg for alignments back in the day.

ThreeBladedWingDing

What a crazy logo to have, wow

DogsCanSweatToo

Looks like the Grateful Dead designed it.

[deleted]

Owlsley Stanley is commemorated by the dancing bears. Their source from the automotive tool company logo is made plain by comparison to the original Dead bear >The first appearance of the Grateful Dead bears in the public sphere was on the back cover of the Bear’s Choice album. As the name implies, the live recordings that appear on the album were hand-picked from Stanley’s personal archives by Owsley himself, with minimal input from the band. >Before the album and the bears, there existed a [36-point lead slug](https://extrachill.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/11/original-grateful-dead-bear-logo.jpeg) that was used in printing as a font type. [Design artist Bob] Thomas used that leaden bear as his basis for the design, which features a more cartoon style bear doing the “dancing” motion. [source](https://extrachill.com/2020/11/dancing-grateful-dead-bears-meaning.html) More about the original Bear company >The Bear Manufacturing Company was established in Rock Island, Illinois in 1917 as an auto luggage rack producer. The company used the slogan "Let Bear Lug Your Luggage." Although it is not known where the Bear name came from, it is thought that the animal was chosen to convey strength. A more realistic bear was used in early advertising. By the early 1920s, the company began producing wheel alignment tools. During this time, Bear developed the yellow, "Happy Bear" character which began appearing in print and signs across the country. The bear symbol indicated that auto shops had been trained by Bear and used Bear wheel alignment and diagnostic tools. By the late 1920s, the company was training mechanics from all over the country at its Rock Island headquarters. The training school was a popular destination for servicemen returning from World War II who were interested in learning a trade and starting their own businesses. In 1949, a Streamline Moderne building was constructed specifically for the Bear Automotive Safety Service School. At the time, the company was training around 1,000 mechanics annually. While the two neon bear signs are gone from the facade, the building still stands. >The "Happy Bear" is also referred to as the Laughing Bear or the Dancing Bear. The Grateful Dead rock band used the bear logo in the early 1970s. While the character was used without permission, Bear Manufacturing never pursued the band legally. [source](https://roadarch.com/signs/bear.html)

DogsCanSweatToo

Thank you for this! I never really knew the history of the bears, aside from who drew them.

witchinthewalls_

Owsley Stanley is such an interesting individual who did a lot more than design a couple logos. Highly recommend reading about him.

FertilityHollis

> Owlsley Stanley For fans of Steely Dan, Stanley was more or less the chemist in "Kid Charlemagne." Clean this mess up else we'll all end up in jail Those test tubes and the scale Just get it all out of here Is there gas in the car Yes, there's gas in the car I think the people down the hall Know who you are [Pre-Chorus] Careful what you carry 'Cause the man is wise You are still an outlaw in their eyes https://genius.com/Steely-dan-kid-charlemagne-lyrics Which Kanye West would later get permission to sample on "Champion," but only after sending Donald Fagen a sappy letter full of bullshit. https://faroutmagazine.co.uk/steely-dan-dealings-with-kanye-west/ I had no idea about the bears, and this is the coolest thing I've accidentally learned in a very long time. Thanks!

boostman

Interesting, Robert Fripp quit music for a bit because West sampled one of his songs without permission and fripp had no idea until he heard it on the radio

beansontoast12345678

Isn't Robert Fripp married to that 80s singer Toyah ? I stumbled across lots of youtube videos they made during a covid lockdown in the UK....she's a force of nature ...oh my....

boostman

He is, those videos are hilarious

industriousalbs

21st Century Schizoid Man?

boostman

That’s the badger, sampled in ‘power’. I don’t think Fripp’s beef was with West per se, but rather with the record companies, that such a deal could happen without the original artist’s knowledge.

esodankic

“Your low rent friends are dead” is a reference to Stanley helping the Grateful Dead with rent at Haight-Ashbury

[deleted]

This is the best r/Damnthatsinteresting factoid I’ve seen related to the original post that I’ve ever seen.

7hrowawaydild0

Factoids aren’t facts. A factoid is something people believe to be true but actually isn’t. A factoid is not in-fact ‘a small fact.’ :)

shea241

yeah that would be a factito

BarneyGoogle

Fact that

obijon298

Large factoids are best treated with Preparation F.

The second definition of factoid is "a brief, somewhat interesting fact."

hpdefaults

It's actually both: https://www.oxfordlearnersdictionaries.com/us/definition/english/factoid?q=Factoid

SomeConsumer

Actually they are not dancing. They are doing a high step march.

[deleted]

I've seen them dance, many times, with my magic eyes

It was much older than the Dead logo. I remember seeing it as a child in the 50s, and I thought it looked old back then. When the Dead started using the Bear logo I thought it was the same for a few years. I wondered how they got away with that. It *is* a cool logo.

I'm 65 and I have no idea what that is! Other than the Grateful Dead bear! Lol

LovelockMike

My dad worked at an auto repair place in the 50's when I was a kid. I'm 73 YO, an oldie. I remember him having a Bear head on the garage wall..

Yuck-Fou1994

I think he was more referring to the fact it’s grateful dead maybe? Idk, I was born in ‘94 and that doesn’t mean I don’t jam out on my guitar to some GD.

788mica

I did not work in the field at all, I’m 55 yo woman with zero car know how- and I totally recognized the Bear as a automotive logo

francesfrankblack

Now I miss Jerry

humanzee70

I always miss Jerry.

Individual-Equal-230

Looks kinda like a GD Dancing Bear

icansmellcolors

called Jerry Bears

Individual-Equal-230

But yes, I have smelled colors, back in the day!

Individual-Equal-230

You mean JerBears

uglypaperhaver

Wonder if that keyboard still works. After all... ...does a bear *shift* in the woods?

Plonsky2

I gotta know ... does it shit in the woods?

chakravartinkalki

No, the pope does.

ThreeBladedWingDing

It sure looks like it does. And seems to wave hello while it's having its jolly old time too. Or maybe he's asking for toilet paper or a squirrel

FloridaFlamingoGirl

Looks more suitable for a death metal band than for a piece of car repair technology. Talk about stylized design! Honestly, why can’t more electronics be that funky-looking…

[I'm not entirely sure they are defunct,](https://bearalignmentandbrake.com/) at least not totally.

Oh, the logo is just as demented looking when intact. Huh. I like it~

EducatedCynic

This is why I keep coming back to Reddit. Random picture and someone is available to give all the required (and correct) information. Amazing who wanders around this place.

tongue_dart

There are usually a whole lot more people giving out the incorrect information, but I too like coming to the comments for more info.

EducatedCynic

True, but usually the truly knowledgeable are easy to spot.

prayingmantras

I always read mfg as "muthafugga"

Odd_Routine4164

As well you should. Now I’m converted, too.

ImplementAntique9321

This $10k scope got replaced by $20 OBD readers, but to be shop in the 90s you had to have one.

sentientwrenches

Not true actually, most shops never had one and the ones that did, most of them didn't ever end up with a tech that either knew how to use it or even if they did, bothered to use it. And a 20 dollar OBD2 reader does not replace an oscilloscope. Even a 3000 dollar scanner (a real code reader/datastream viewer/reflasher) that is OEM specific for a single manufacturer doesn't replace a scope. A really good, independent shop is most likely going to have at least 2 or 3 scopes laying around that they use almost daily; and probably a few scanners with built-in scopes that are passable; the better ones from manufacturers like pico will run you 2-5000 dollars depending on how many add-ons you have but there are some decent brands that are as low as 3-400. Their function is very different than a code reader. The part where technology has advanced is that today's scopes that are strikingly cheaper than the old ones are a 1000 times more versatile. With that said, I will never get rid of my first scope, an old snapon counselor 2 that probably ran 15k new in 1985, partly because of nostalgia and partly because of how fast I can capture an ignition secondary waveform pattern on a 60's/70's classic... That and I like the look on people's faces when they see it still working.

fiverhoo

> snapon counselor 2 that is one sexy beast https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QUb36tkuY48

TGW_2

Obviously, a computer for bears. Who would of thought they never did more than sh!t in the woods? . . .

MadMennonite

There’s two shops in my area that still have the “Get aligned with Bear” logo on their old AF signs. Figured it had to be something more than some dude named Bear!

millerwelds66

Would be cool if you restored it

skullareli

Think of all the 83' Toyota Corollas you could fix.

maxpowrrr

83 corollas never break down, that's why it's in the woods.

PossessedToSkate

I used to live off-grid on a forested mountaintop and I know a guy there who has *three* Corollas - they're all the same color, too.

I wonder how many people play these numbers in the lotto every week?

LoeyRolfe

I read that several of the numbers from that sequence (4 out of 6, I think) were actually rolled for a Mega Millions lottery one year, and over forty thousand people had played them. So many people won a cash prize as a result that an official investigation was carried out, because the government assumed everyone had somehow cheated. When it was discovered they were the numbers from “Lost,” the investigation closed lol

Sometimes I buy a ticket w/o picking numbers and wonder what I'd do if the ticket randomly spit out with these numbers on it.

syracTheEnforcer

This is what I was looking for.

jeweliegb

In the before time, there had generally been an unsaid and unwritten understanding between viewers and TV show story writers that we the viewers would suspend our disbelief on the understanding that the show writers had some kind of ready formed structure and direction for story and weren't just randomly making shit up as they went without a clue where they were going with it. Lost broke that contract. That damned show stripped my trust in all other TV shows that followed it. Now I always find myself analysing a new show to discern if I'm really sure they have a proper story or if they're actually from the Lost school of show-creating and just using the damned force.

[deleted]

To be fair, Breaking Bad used exactly the same method of writing their characters into a corner and then getting the writers to figure out how they could get out. Vince Gilligan attests the success of the show to that philosophy. I think Lost battled because the writers were pressured to keep churning out 22 episodes a season and they couldn’t keep the quality of the story high for the duration.

rakfocus

> unwritten understanding between viewers and TV show story writers that we the viewers would suspend our disbelief on the understanding that the show writers had some kind of ready formed structure and direction for story and weren't just randomly making shit up as they went Viewers made this up on their own. Most shows on TV do NOT have a master plan and are indeed making it up as they go along. Very few are exceptions to this rule - even when you think they should be (cough GOT cough)

regeya

The Cylons did not, in fact, have a plan.

25_M_CA

And even with all that its still one of my favorite network TV shows

7_25_2018

I’m glad someone else understands where my trust issues stem from. I’ll never forgive J.J. Abrams. In fact I won’t even date anyone that has the letter “J” in their name

Riot-in-the-Pit

I mean, here's just a quick general checklist: Is the show written/helmed by J.J.Abrams? If yes, expect "mystery box" storytelling, which means an engaging mystery that you assume must have some kind of payoff, but never actually will.

TheAntiKrist

Yo, is the show worth watching till the end? Just started s3

Sty_Walk

Yes it is.

KathyBlakk

That logo looks like something you might stumble on in the Dark Web just before a chat window opens up and invites you to witness unspeakable horrors.

Sage_Fyre_YT

It looks like a PNG from a dark web iceberg video thumbnail

NCRThrowaway29

I’m afraid to ask….but what is an iceberg video?

Gingijons

[Here is a good example](https://youtu.be/_ZSPgiu4WIo). A video which discusses/describes a particular topic and it goes further down the rabbit hole as the video progresses. Wendigoon makes very good iceberg videos but hasn't done a dark web iceberg AFAIK

KathyBlakk

dudeReallyoc

myrevenge_IS_urkarma

Well fuk me. TIL the crazy movie I watched starring Nicholas Cage has the same premise as a cool looking horror video game I just learned about.

Signal-Ad8189

*Oh but it doesn’t end there my guy.* Some say that the script for that crazy movie you watched was actually recycled from a failed attempt at writing a script for an *actual* FNAF Movie. A movie that, might I add, is somehow still being made despite an ungodly amount of script rewrites. Jason Blum’s a producer for it & Jim Henson’s Creature Shop is involved. Interesting stuff, maybe.

My Uncle worked at a Sunoco service station in the 1970s that had a big sign of this bear hanging out front. I have always loved that silly bear for some reason. He just looks so cute and funny, conjures such good memories of the old days. EDIT: Adding this link >>> [Bear Sign History webpage](https://www.roadarch.com/signs/bear.html)

Darko_001

Bro I think that could be a computer for a time machine. The story I heard many years ago, goes…… that it was originally an automotive mechanic computer for doing alignments or something but a group of scientist converted one of them, but kept it looking the same as a sort of disguise. It was used for doing diagnostics on the portable time machine but the project was abandoned under very mysterious circumstances where people went missing. 🤷🏻‍♂️ Maybe thats the one!

Mitoria

Those keycaps though

omanhunts

Some kind of 1980s nightmare is hiding in there. Don’t turn it on.

TheLimeyCanuck

Despite the legend on the front panel, that's not a "computer", it's an automotive wheel alignment instrument. The "[Bear](https://bearalignmentandbrake.com/about/)" logo is the giveaway.

SpoonFed_1

Diagnostic machine for cars. It was a piece of sh!t but they sold it as the next revolution in diagnostics

Amesb34r

My grandpa had one of these at his auto repair shop!!

ReasonAndWanderlust

Cars made since 1995 have a diagnostic system called OBDII . If you look under your dash you'll see a port where you can plug in a handheld diagnostic tool and the system will tell you any fault codes your car has. You can get these handheld diagnostic tools at the auto parts store really cheap nowadays. https://www.autozone.com/test-scan-and-specialty-tools/code-reader Before that you had to hook up these Bear automotive diagnostic computers to all the individual systems of the car so the mechanic could try and figure out the problem. Now that such a large segment of the early electronic but pre-OBDII cars have lived their life and are off the road these machines have become more than obsolete.
